We the People

Not many days ago, this country celebrated the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day. The vote to approve a declaration of independence occurred on July 2, 1776, but it seems a major divisive issue was the inclusion in the first draft of a strong statement denouncing the slave trade. This statement was removed, and the written document approved, on July 4, 1776. A little more than ten years later, on September 17, 1787, the Preamble to the U.S. Constitution was signed. It begins with the words, “We the People.” In view of this nation’s past history and contemporary activity, the pertinent question is, Who are the people.

Before the Revolutionary days and prior to the importation and arrival of Africans on Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., the shores of this land, Native Americans were held in disrepute and contempt by those who Editor emigrated here. Native Americans were called savages and pagans, even more after they were found to be useless as slaves. They were robbed of their productive lands and rich cultures and were given syphilis and smallpox and driven like cattle from their homes onto reservations. To this day, treaties with Native Americans have been categorically and consistently broken or disregarded. Native Americans have been treated like obstacles to progress that need to be removed. Who are the people?

The story is nearly the same for enslaved Africans who arrived on American shores prior to and following 1619.

Like Native Americans, Africans as a whole were treated with utter disdain and inhumanity, and according to the law were not even persons. Yet those who were considered and treated as animals were found perfectly fit for all kinds of sexual abuse by their owners. Marriages and family units were usually disregarded, and civil rights were often questionable even among free persons of color. Much later, after the Emancipation, African Americans were by law considered three-fifths of a person, and finally after much struggle and litigation, full persons. But our humanity continues to be challenged and our citizen rights are constantly under attack. Who are the people?

Even white, European women, upon arrival in this developing country, found their state to be less than desirable, though better than that of Indians or Africans. "Human" under the law, they had few, if any, civil rights and were treated primarily as subjects of their husbands, fathers, or brothers. Yet the same law determined them incompetent to vote, to be single parents, or to conduct business apart from a man. It was in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that white women, and women in general, began to make civil strides. Unfortunately, in this country women are still struggling for equality with men in many areas. To this day, other ethnic and minority groups continue to face similar issues. Who are the people?

It seems that We the people meant only male European emigrants or their descendants, and of that number, only those who were allegedly Christian … or who were landowners or had businesses or both, … and were not indentured.

Ever since the founding of this country, the members and descendants of this small subset of the population have done all they could to prohibit all others from becoming a part of the We the people group.

We continue to be glad and to celebrate the proclamation of Juneteenth (June 19th), the day on which the last enslaved African Americans were freed, as a federal holiday by President Joe Biden on June 17, 2021. This is an occasion well worth celebrating, but I wonder what difference such a holiday will make in today’s racially charged and callous environment.

The benefit a holiday celebrating Blacks’ legal freedom is questionable when we are still subject to civil and legal oppression by some bigoted, unprosecuted citizenry and sworn law officers; when we are yet subject to prejudicial or discriminatory practices by many commercial establishments; when we are subjected to questionable and unlawful persecution and arrests by peace officers of various stations; and when the right to vote, fundamental to the pursuit of a more perfect union and democracy, is being officially and legislatively undermined with seeming impunity from the judicial system.

As Christians, we recognize there is no freedom greater or more precious than personal release from the bondage of sin and death. Hallelujah to Jesus, the Holy Advocate and Divine Liberator! But we are also called to be the best Christian citizens we can be in whatever country and under whatever government we find ourselves. Therefore, as citizens, we must continue to struggle for the recognition of all people as full and respected citizens in this land. America is beautiful in many ways, but it will become more beautiful, and the union more perfect, as the sundry and diverse groups of people that make up our nation are treated with not just equality but with respect, equity and, dare I say it, love. With God’s guidance and help, we the people can do it.

CHRISTIAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH 2022 GENERAL CONFERENCE COMMITTEE ON RESOLUTIONS The Committee on Resolutions is appointed by the College of Bishops in accordance with ¶206 of THE BOOK OF DISCIPLINE, REVISED 2018. The following are pertinent paragraphs from THE BOOK OF DISCIPLINE, REVISED 2018, PAGES 32-33: ¶206. There shall be a Committee on Resolutions appointed by the College of Bishops. Each Bishop shall appoint one member to the Resolutions Committee by September 1 of the year preceding the General Conference. The Presiding Bishop of the District shall publish the name of the committee member throughout the District. ¶206.1. All resolutions, memorials, and other materials contemplated for presentation to the General Conference shall be sent to the appropriate Episcopal District Resolutions Committee member on or before January 31 of the year of the General Conference. ¶206.2. Resolutions mailed, sent or given to the Episcopal District representative shall be examined by him or her to ascertain if they meet the requirements for proposed legislation (cf. ¶1500.7, §4). All resolutions requiring changes in the wording and/or legal meanings of provisions in the Discipline shall state the paragraph, section, page and language to be changed and the language to be substituted. In addition to the requirements referenced, resolutions shall not contain more than three preamble paragraphs. If the resolutions do not meet the requirements, they shall be returned for corrections.

In addition to these paragraphs from The Book of Discipline, Revised 2018, the College of Bishops has agreed upon the following regulations for the sake of uniformity: 1) Resolutions should be submitted in writing. a) Hard copies given to, mailed or emailed to the Episcopal District Representative should be typed in 12-point font, only on one side of the paper. Multiple pages should be stapled together. b) Resolutions submitted via email should be sent as an attachment in Word document format. c) The submitter of the resolution must type his/her name, address, telephone, email and local church information on each page of the resolution. d) Resolutions submitted on behalf of groups and organizations should clearly state this information and include one name as the point of contact.

2) All resolutions requiring changes in the wording and/or legal meanings of the provisions in the Discipline shall state the paragraph, section, page and language to be changed and the language to be substituted.

3) Resolutions shall not contain more than three preamble paragraphs.

4) Resolutions not meeting the above requirements will be returned for corrections. Corrected resolutions must be returned in time to meet the January 31, 2022 deadline.

“From Where I Sit …”

Additional Insurance Benefits for Retiree Spouses!

In March of this year, we announced an improved insurance benefit for the spouses of the active participants of the CME Retirement Plan.

The new benefit for these spouses increased the amount of insurance on them from 50% of the amount on the insured participant to 100% up to a maximum of $50,000. This enhanced benefit is provided by our new insurance carrier, Lincoln Financial Group, and has been contracted for a three-year period.

In the meantime, there has also been an increase in the spousal coverage of Retirees with a revised schedule. In the past, spouses of insured retirees were covered for 50% of the amount of insurance on the life of the Retiree up to a maximum of $5,000.

However, this new plan now provides for all spouses of insured Retirees to be covered at the flat level of $6,500 regardless of the amount of insurance on the life of the Retiree.

I unfortunately misstated in the original announcement that “Participants should expect to soon see this increased benefit on their participant statements for the period ending December 31, 2020.” That was an error. Because the new policy was effective February 1st, the new insurance limits could not be reflected on the December 2020 Participant Statements. The new levels of coverage will be shown on the June 2021 Participant Statements. Also, like the increased benefit for spouses of active participants, these enhanced benefits for spouses of retirees are guaranteed only for a three-year period. Of course, at renewal every effort by the Board of Personnel Services will be utilized through our administrators to continue these important, enhanced benefits.

Again, this is a good time to remind Plan participants of the importance of updating and keeping current spousal information and beneficiary designations. In the event of a claim where there has been a change in the participant’s spousal status and the participant has not changed or updated their designations, our department is limited by law to process claims based on current documentation in the participant files.

As I mentioned in the earlier article, the good news is this enhanced benefit is now afforded participants by the increase of insurance on their spouses. Even if it only lasts for a season (or three) and has not cost anything additional, it is truly an enhanced benefit that inures to the benefit of the participant and their family. Or at least that’s the way it looks to me…

Getting Back to Basics as “We Envision Our Way Forward Taking Care of God’s Business”

Take Another Look Many of the Regional Annual Conferences are continuing while some have concluded.

After the conferences have concluded, who are the leaders selected to lead God’s people into a post pandemic society? We must answer the following questions: How do we get back to basics?

How do we move from the meetings to the streets? What is the pathway we take? Do we move cautiously forward, or do we become risk takers for the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church? It is a New Year! So, Happy New Year to the 2021-2022 conference year.

How do we get back to basics? As leaders we must take another look, a fresh and deeper look. The details of our ministry must not be overlooked. It may look like the same church, community, or ministry, the same process and even the same people and setting but look again! We must look again at the details of our assignment as leaders and the details of the place where ministry happens. When I was an adjunct professor at Ohio Christian University (Morrow, GA campus) I read an article about Agassiz and the Fish. It was a great read and excellent entomological lesson. Likewise, getting back to the basic tenants of ministry can teach us some valuable lessons. How did the 41 visionaries start a denomination? Yes, we read the story, but we must take another look.

Who will Go? Go where? Ministry requires motivation. Motivation can be internal or external, high, or low tempered, and driven by risk or reward. Often the choice is left up to the individuals. We can do the work of missions (local and/or abroad), evangelism, social justice, and discipleship. I’m sure the 41 visionaries were told you can’t, but they saw something different and better. However, their greater motivation was a “we can” (Phil 4:13) attitude that moved them from the meeting to the streets. They did not see the same ole’ things. I am talking about the physical street but there are other streets which some are not motivated to move from. Some of these are Lazy LN, Doubtful DR, We Cannot Do That PKWY, Average AVE, Pessimistic PL, and even Contentment CIR. Yet, I suggest that you take another look.

Risk or Reward? Fear of the known or unknown must not be the excuse for effective leaders and risk taking in ministry. Was Jesus a risk taker? I suggest to you He was. When He went against the government in his day, He was taking a huge risk. Healing people on the Sabbath was a taking a risk. Believe it or not Faith is risk taking – risk that is motivated by one’s faith. Bruce Arians, Super Bowl LV winning coach coined the term, “No risk it, no biscuit," and said, “If you don't try great shots, you won't hit one. You can't live scared." Arians says, “You’re not gonna get anywhere in life not taking chances.” Although the context of his comments was throwing a football deep into the opponent’s defense, the risk is still worth the reward. Take a deeper look, not to see what’s missing, but a deeper look at the new opportunities for ministry.

Yes, we have looked at various ways to create vibrant worship experiences with virtual worship, parking lot, inperson, and teleconferencing. You have been chosen to reexamine, take another look, even take a risk or two. After this session of annual conferences concludes, I challenge you to take another look.

We are The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church recognizing the importance of Christ in our daily lives.

A MESSAGE FOR LOCAL LAY LEADERS: BECOME COMMITTED AND DO THE WORK! I have learned that the successful work of the church (we are the church) hinges on attitude, consistency, and positive actions. And so goes it with Local Lay Ministry Councils, where willingness and gaining understanding plays a larger role in one’s success than the innate or initial ability that one possesses. . .

In that process, we must understand what our role (particularly as a Lay Leader) is in provoking the laity of “the body of Christ” to greater service. In doing so, one must understand and embrace the Lay Ministry Mission - “To Reach, Teach, and Minister to All Generations, Equipping Them for Greater Works and Service for Him!" Lay Leaders must have the courage to initiate and do the work that they have been called to do. . . Don’t allow lack of participation of the masses stop you from doing your work; look around, seek, and gain the commitment from a “faithful few” who are willing to stand with you and help build a successful organization defined by effective and impactful ministry efforts. At the core of it all is who we are within the body of Christ – for “We are Laity – The Unordained People of God, Furthering the Mission of the Church in the World!"

So, make your Local Lay Ministry Council come alive and live a sustained life of helping to tell the “Good News” and winning souls for Christ, stimulating the faithful, and promoting the Church's total program.

Lay Leaders must help set the example for members to become committed to the work that each has been called to do.

Always know that effective and sustained lay ministry requires sincere effort and energy built on pure motives. Leaders should, therefore, communicate and model behavior that shows genuine concern for the growth of others. There are others, but for this brief writing, I employ you to work to do these seven things: 1. Obtain a copy of the most current Lay Ministry Manual from the Department of Lay Ministry.

2. Take personal responsibility for calling and communicating with members and potential members about support and involvement.

3. Adopt a collaborative and cooperative spirit that will allow the local lay council to partner with other church ministries in doing the work of the church.

4. Study and stay informed so that the council can assist and support the pastor in the proper implementation of matters of importance to the congregation.

5. Accept the responsibility of motivating the laity of the Church toward effective service. Seek to improve personal relationships among clergy and laity and challenge the laity to do their best in coming closer to God and to each other.

6. Promote tithing as a priority.

7. Work to be an essential organization within an essential church engaged in effective and impactful ministry.

HBCUs Connect to African American History Submitted by Carl Montgomery

Historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are institutions of higher education in the United States that were established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964 with the intention of primarily serving the African American community. HBCUs are in dire need of support beyond their alumni base. HBCUs provide the best source for education for minorities. They have a nurturing environment with a stable family-like atmosphere. Most HBCUs are rooted in faith, promoting service to others beyond the campus gates. They are still the very best institutions for developing successful college graduates. Moreover, the Westside Community Christian Methodist Episcopal Church lay council understands that many of our heroes and sheroes and staunch prolific leaders emerged from HBCUs. Historically, before the Civil War, HBCUs were established to meet the education needs of former enslaved Americans.

Blacks were summarily denied admission to traditional white institutions. HBCUs were founded as the principle post-secondary institutions for educating Blacks. Such is the case with Lane College established in 1882 by the Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America.

Recently, the Westside Community Christian Methodist Episcopal Church celebrated the fifth Sunday as HBCU Sunday. Westside Community Christian Methodist Rev. Dr. Logan C. Hampton preaching at Westside Community Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Episcopal Church was indeed privileged to have the very articulate, astute, expressive and powerful preacher, Dr. Logan C. Hampton, President of historic Lane College to deliver the morning sermon. Dr. Hampton stated that he came to give witness that “God is real, God’s word is real, and that His word will not return void.”

Rev. Andre’ C. Loyd, Jr., pastor, introduced Dr. Hampton. Rev. Loyd reminded congregants that the goal of HBCU Sunday is to support historically black colleges and universities financially, physically and spiritually. It is important that we increase the percentage of financial donors to HBCUs to impact their ability to amass a larger and broader base of supporters and benefactors. Dr. Hampton stated his appreciation for the outpouring of support received from the Westside Community Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.

Dr. Hampton stated, “We don’t look like what we have been through, God has been a blessing to us.” “When an eagle is caught in a storm he faces the storm.” In Jeremiah 48:40 the scripture writer informs us, “For this is what the Lord says, “Behold one shall fly swiftly like an eagle and spread his wings.” Lane (L-r): Sis. Step Out with Faith and Trust God Submitted by Rev. Jessie Manuel

The butterfly-filled-stomach feeling of being pushed out of my comfort zone and into something I was unsure of and didn’t feel like doing . This feeling crept into my thoughts and pitched a tent that could weather a hurricane. “Here we go again,” I thought, as I began to prayerfully journal in conversation with God daily about what He was up to now and what my next move was supposed to be. No matter how badly I would rather camp out in my comfort zone, I know God’s plans are more than I can ask for or imagine.

God is the God of making big moves. If it seems odd or impossible, or I feel unqualified and uncomfortable, I often start praying “are you sure?” signs from Him. His prick of conviction is always followed by the heavy pressure to sit still, remain silent, or run away. We have a very real enemy trying to kill, steal and destroy us. He will take full advantage of the prideful bent towards disqualifying ourselves in order to keep us from the life that Jesus died to give us.

But we are who He says we are – not who we doubt we are.

God remains, dwells, sits and abides over the flood, as King forever. He is unchanging, all knowing, and everywhere all at once. He goes before us, behind us, and remains with us. The One True God was, is, and is to come. “The Lord’s absolute and everlasting rule is committed to his peoples complete salvation and unmixed blessedness. When everything else shifts and changes around us, sometimes instantaneously rerouting our lives, we have peace in knowing God is

always in control. He is our stability in the storm. No one loves us more than our God, and Jesus is living proof.

The same God who formed the earth and all life in it breathes life into our daily lives. Jesus was there in the beginning, and remains with us now. The same God “who by his word brought and ordered creation of the formless ‘deep,’” (NIV) took great care in creating each of us individually, with specific purpose.

God knit us in our mother’s womb, and Jesus died so we would have life to the full. Genesis 1:2 says, “Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”

If we’re not careful to stay aligned with who God says we are, it’s easy to forget why we’re here in the first place. God made us awesome and amazing, meant to bring glory and honor to His name. I’m often tempted to believe I’m just being humble by standing in the shadows, or remaining silent. But what if God wants to move through me, to do something huge? I surely don’t want to miss any of it! Like an adrenaline junkie, once God moves a fresh wind through the front door of our hearts, we crave more of the supernatural joy and peace that come alongside obedience.

Before Jesus walked to the cross, He prayed to the Father for any other way. He was in agony. Jesus was sad! We have a friend in Jesus who sympathizes with our emotions. He ended His prayer, “not my will but your will.” Sometimes we take for granted, because Jesus is God, that it was easy for Him to walk out the Father’s will for His earthly life. It was really hard. He experienced human pain on a level many of us will never be asked to endure. And He did it willingly, for us.

The LORD is enthroned as King forever. Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father. Alive. Risen from the dead. We, too, become adopted into the family of God when we believe in Jesus. It’s giving up our agenda, and setting down our trust in our own abilities, an instead choosing to rely on His strength, and His peace. Following Him isn’t easy, but it’s the only way to live life …to the full.

Trinity CME Church-Usher Ministry is on a mission and a move in serving God and serving others. Under the leadership of Pastor, Rev. Marquis L. Hardrick, they have set the example in helping those in need and being transparent in sharing the love of Christ.

On March 4, 2021, the Trinity Usher Ministry became Servant Leaders from the heart in seeing the need to help 25 plus children to explore and learn the basics of Robotics, which encouraged and motivated the children to learn and do more. They donated $1,000 to Chapman Partnership to purchase the Robotic equipment. Chapman Partnership is the private sector partner of the Miami-Dade County Homeless Trust, empowering the Homeless and providing educational resources for children. The Trinity Usher Ministry provides a loving and caring atmosphere in assisting, serving, and facilitating the church worship service for their congregation to receive God’s word.

And their President Melvina White and Vice-President Lillie Thomas lead their outreach ministry in providing support to those in need and/ or bereavement within their church and community. Trinity’s heartfelt Usher Ministry, in serving God’s people, is a guiding light to others as they work together sharing God’s unconditional love, spreading the good news of Christ, and empowering others to seek God’s Kingdom. They are called to serve, as Ushers United on One Accord in the Body of Christ. For We stand in Unity; Work in Faith; And Serve in Love!

A Dual Celebration Amidst the Pandemic Submitted by Minister John L. Johnson, Christian Index Correspondent, and Elma Holmes-Glaze, Director of BOCE

Under the leadership of Bishop Teresa Jefferson-Snorton, Prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District; Southeast Alabama Region; Rev. James Q. Smith, Presiding Elder of the Montgomery, Phenix City, Opelika District; and Dr. Raynetta PrevoWilliams, Pastor, St. Paul CME Church, Crawford, Alabama celebrated a grand occasion on February 14, 2021. This was a memorable date and will be remembered for years to come.

It is tradition to invite family and friends to worship with us in our annual fellowship program that is observed the second Sunday in February. Meanwhile, in March 2020, COVID-19 started an epidemic, yet, in October 2019, plans had begun to come together to build a new fellowship hall with a seating capacity of two hundred. This project had been discussed for many years.

The pastor and program committee began to brainstorm. Ultimately, the pandemic caused a disruption in our assembling and worshipping in the sanctuary.

In April 2020, the groundbreaking for the building was done, and the construction began and was completed July 6, 2020. During this building process, services were held via teleconference, Zoom, and drive-in. There were a few adjustments and technical issues, but we never missed a Sunday worship or youth Zoom on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, there was a strong desire to show just how good God has been and to give thanks for another wonderful blessing.

Yes, completion of the fellowship hall was truly a blessing from God. Prayers and faith in God were the main focus throughout the process. Of course, being out of the building for worship services crept into weeks and then months. We were so excited about the new construction and so involved in our virtual worship services that time swiftly passed.

Needing to maintain our economic stability, the committee agreed to have one combined program: Family an Friends Day - Fellowship Hall Opening Ceremony.

The theme for the occasion was, "Growing Stronger, Growing Deeper, Reaching Higher," and supporting scripture, Isaiah 40:31. Members Continued on next page August 2021 • The Christian Index

Submissions Continued from previous page of the church volunteered to be a part of the committee and program. Special emphasis was made to recognize the legacy of our deceased stewards and trustees. Meanwhile, many of the current members chose to recognize their deceased family members in the Memorial section of the souvenir book. Additionally, the community businesses and residents contributed donations and congratulatory advertisements for recognition in the booklets.

Pastor Prevo-Williams gave a beautiful, soul stirring meditation that left an indelible impression on everyone.

The Consecration Rituals followed. Moreover, Elder James Q. and Mrs. Sylvia Smith gave congratulatory remarks. Remembering the Journey of this event left the congregation emotional and happy. We feel so very blessed to witness the completion of the edifice. More than anything, we are awaiting the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful addition. We celebrate this victory, a dual celebration, with joyful hearts. In the midst of COVID-19, the abnormal mask wearing, social distancing, sanitizing, hand washing and elbow bumping, we focused, and we welcome the moment and opportunity to assemble face to face.

To God be the Glory for what he has done and continues to do at St. Paul CME Church.

Eugene “Budd” May: A True Trailblazer Who Dared To Fly Submitted by Rev. Pat Winston Assistant to Pastor Dr. Carmichael Crutchfield Mother Liberty CME Church

McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport, The Memphis Blackhawks, and Team Memphis recently partnered to celebrate the legacy of pioneers and trailblazers in aviation. One of the honorees was Eugene “Budd” May, a member of the CME Church. This celebration was held at the McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport on June 15, 2021. Also recognized that day was Bessie Coleman, the first African American female and American to earn an International Pilot’s License in France on June 15, 1921, and the event celebrated the 100th anniversary of her historic endeavor.

Eugene May, a native of Jackson, Tennessee, was a life-long member of Mt. Pleasant CME Church, where Rev. Terrance R. Miller is pastor. He passed away in 2019. His entire family are life-long CMEs. The celebration on June 15th marked the archiving of his award at McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport for all to see. Mr. May has left a legacy of fortitude and determination. Since his early childhood he dreamed of one day flying an airplane but faced rejection in his hometown of Jackson, where he was told no one would give him flying lessons because in that time African Americans were not allowed to learn to fly. He was unable find anyone in the South who would teach him to fly, so he traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, where again he faced rejection. He refused to be deterred and made his way to Chicago and enrolled in the Cornelius Coffey School of Aeronautics.

This school was the first aeronautical school established by an African American. Finally, he received his pilot’s license in 1948, later purchased a 1951 chrome Swift Globe aircraft, and traveled all over the US. Morris Fair, a Lane College alumnus and member of Lane Chapel CME Church in Humboldt, Tennessee, heard of Mr. May and his story and introduced him to the Memphis Blackhawks (an organization of African American pilots and other aviation professionals). In 2017 the Memphis Blackhawks made him an honorary member. With 18

their support and that of Team Memphis, Mr. May was bestowed the prestigious FAA Wright Brother’s Master Pilot Award in 2018, recognizing his 50-plus years of professional and safe flying experience.

Steve Smith, Executive Director of McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport stated, “We are honored to be a part of this special day recognizing two of America’s Aviation Pioneers, local hero Eugene May and International Aviatrix Bessie Coleman. We take time to remember these Americans because of the struggles they overcame to realize their dream of flight. Their accomplishments are examples to young people around the world that dreams can come true.”

Sharon C. Shaw, Acting President of the Memphis Blackhawks, stated, “We believe that it is of paramount importance that we preserve the legacy of these pioneers, and we are elated to remember both of these legacy pilots. Both had to travel to other places to fulfill their dreams of flying an “aeroplane.” The Blackhawks continue in the spirit of our late President, Mr. Morris Brown, by serving our communities and helping to build tomorrow’s leaders.”

Thelma Rudd of Team Memphis said, “Mr. May had to go on these journeys and we are hoping young people here will be inspired by him in the area of aviation and dare to dream.”

Mr. May is survived by two sisters, Lorraine M. Gill, a member of Mt. Pleasant CME Church in Jackson, Tennessee, and Betty M. Williams, a member of Jamison Temple CME Church in Kansas City, Missouri, along with a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

Leola Davenport: Phenomenal Woman Submitted by Pamela Boone

It is said that a strong woman is one who feels deeply and loves fiercely. Her tears flow as abundantly as her laughter. A strong woman is both soft and powerful, she is both practical and spiritual. A strong woman in her essence is a gift to the world. These words describe Leola Virginia Foster Davenport who received her wings and was called by God peacefully to her eternal home on Tuesday, January 26, 2021, after a long, beautiful life. Leola was born on February 2, 1924, in Cedar Heights, Maryland, to George Henry Foster, Sr. and Mable Rebecca Maiden Foster. The second of six children, Leola was educated in the Prince George’s County Public Schools in Fairmont Heights and graduated from Margaret Murray Washington Vocational School in Washington, D.C. At the age of 18, Leola married her childhood sweetheart, William Leroy Davenport, Sr. (deceased) on February 10, 1942. They had ten children and were married for 66 beautiful years. On Leola and William’s 60th anniversary, she wrote what it was like to be married 60 years. She said, “The word 'step' was never used, we grew up as one big family. It’s not always easy to say what you feel, but I want all my children and husband to know what I feel and think. No matter what, I have always loved all of you even when I disapprove of some of the things you’ve done. Each one of you have your own personality and I wouldn’t want to change you. Even though we don’t always agree on things, we never depart in a fit of anger. I want to thank all of you for the years we have shared. When I think about the bad days and the good days, I realize that all of my good days outweighed the bad days, so I won’t complain.”

Leola Davenport was a member of St. Matthew Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church in Cedar Heights, Maryland, since 1928. She was only four years old when a man named Mr. Richard Robinson canvassed the neighborhood looking for children to increase the membership of the Sunday School. Her father, Rev. George Foster, a minister himself, did not mind. Leola was very active and served diligently at St. Matthew CME Church and in many positions with the Washington-Virginia District and the New York-Washington Region of the CME Church. At St. Matthew, she was the musician for the Senior Choir, Junior Choir, Youth Choir, and Men’s Choir. She served as the Church Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the building fund committee and a devoted member of the Lay Council. She was a member of the Stewardess Board for over 70 years, serving as Stewardess Emeritus at the time of her passing.

Leola had also been in the Missionary Society for 80 years, starting as a youth in the Mattie E. Coleman Circle. She served as the Fine Arts Secretary for St. Matthew CME Church and the Washington-Virginia District. She was a Missionary $100.00 Marcher from 1969 - 2020. She had traveled the District and Annual Conference for many years and attended the Annual Conference until the age of 93. Leola Davenport received numerous plaques and awards for her services to St. Matthew CME Church, the Washington-Virginia District, and the New York-Washington Region.

Submissions Until February 2020, she attended Sunday Worship Service, Sunday School, Bible Study, and all programs of the church. She was a respected member of the Women’s Group and the Traveling Samaritans. After COVID, she learned to adjust to a ZOOM lifestyle. She loved her church so much and her motto was, “Not what the church can do for me, but what I can do for the church.”

Mom Davenport loved to sew, cook, play the piano, work crossword puzzles, put together picture puzzles, read books, play games, and play card games. She was known for her great home cooked meals which included hot homemade rolls, baked goods, apple pies and poor man fruit cakes, just to name a few. Leola was an excellent seamstress; she did not need a pattern to make an outfit – she had a God-given talent for sewing and made pants, gowns, suits, and coats, as well as doll clothing.

She loved to travel, went on several cruises, and went to Martha’s Vineyard every summer to spend time with family. She would play the piano in the living room and sing songs to her family. Up to the fifth generation, the kids would challenge her in completing puzzles but they could not beat her; she still would find the majority of the pieces to a 5,000-piece puzzle. She would read a book a day, which is why she made all of her children go to the library every Saturday to get a new book. In her later years, she gravitated to playing card games. The family had a running game which was started one summer in Martha’s Vineyard and she won 835 games out of 1,690 games.

Leola Davenport raised, nurtured, and gave sound advice to six generations. Two children, Francine Anderson and Paulette Dailey (Johnnie), predeceased her.

She leaves a beautiful legacy to the following to cherish her memory: children: William Davenport, Jr. (Brenda), Janelle Bodrick, Corinne Davenport, George Davenport (Arlee), Deborah Peyton (Everett Sr., deceased), Annette Davenport, Samuel Davenport (Faye) and Leonice Davenport; 19 grandchildren, 57 great-grandchildren, 34 great-great-grandchildren and one great-great-great grandson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 121:1, “I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.”

Leola V. Davenport leaves a great legacy to her family, to the CME Church, and to the world. She was a phenomenal woman.

Tribute to a "Living Testimony" Submitted by Sis. Grace Dangerfield Metropolitan CME Church, Cincinnati, Ohio Rev. Ian Gibson, Pastor

Monday, April 19, 2021, marked an incredibly special milestone for one of our members, Sis. Mary Lou Behanan. It was on this day that she reached her 103rd birthday. Sis. Behanan was born April 19, 1918 as the only child of John Henry and Lillie Holliman in Thomason, Georgia.

Over the past 50 years, as a member of Metropolitan, Sis. Mary has been actively involved in various organizations, but most recently the local Missionary Society became a favorite. Thus, it became imperative for the Missionaries to come up with a way to honor her during the covid 19 pandemic limitations.

A newsletter was mailed to the entire membership soliciting birthday cards to be sent to Sis. Behanan with hopes she would receive 103 cards if possible. As a result, Sis. Behanan's apartment was flooded with cards, flowers, fruit arrangements

Submissions and all kinds of monetary gifts on her birthday. The president of the Missionary Society, Sis. Sonia Delaine, along with several members later showed up with what Sis. Behanan had requested as her favorite restaurant dinner since they couldn't gather as a crowd at church.

A most pleasant surprise came when Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, Sr. showed up with his personal letter from the Second Episcopal District and a proclamation that had been prepared by the Mayor of Cincinnati, the Honorable John Cranley, proclaiming April 19, 2021 as Mary Lou Behanan Day in the City of Cincinnati.

During the reading of the proclamation by Bishop Thomas, Sis. Mary Lou became tearfully emotional, and it was evident the day had been one of genuine happiness.

From the reading of the proclamation, we learned that Sis. Behanan's favorite scripture is "I will never leave nor forsake you." -Hebrews 13:5 And her favorite song is, "Where Is Your Faith In God?" It is our fervent prayer that Sis. Mary Lou Behanan is blessed with many years to come to enjoy fellowship among the saints and time for her favorite hobbies, doing puzzles and fishing.

I chose to reference Sis. Behanan as a "living testimony" because her long life is a testament to the goodness and greatness of an Almighty and Awesome God. I'm constantly amazed and reminded of how much God loves us. The long life of Sis. Mary Lou Behanan just became another example.

Our Bishop, Teresa JeffersonSnorton, has often expressed the need for congregations to be “intentional” in our mission endeavors throughout the communities we serve. Therefore, I was excited when my church, Murchison Temple CME Church, Jacksonville, Florida, and First United Methodist Church of Jacksonville connected through an intentional outreach effort to benefit their homeless ministry, the Healing Hygiene Pantry. This ministry was developed by First UMC to serve members of the Jacksonville community who are experiencing hardship because of loss of employment and/or homelessness and provides them with hygiene products.

Our congregations believe that everyone is somebody and that when we are feeling good about ourselves, we can face life more positively and be our best selves. The combined efforts of Murchison Temple CME Church’s Board of Christian Education, Lay Department and Celebrate Recovery Ministry, along with Central Metropolitan CME Church’s Women’s Missionary Society and Holsey Temple CME Church resulted in a very sizeable collection of toilet paper and flushable wipes for the Healing Hygiene Pantry.

We agree with the sentiments expressed by First UMC’s Pastor, Rev. Tiffany McCall in her thank you letter, “The needs of our city are great and it’s going to take a continued joint effort of all of God’s children working together to restore hope and healing to those in despair.” We are all struggling during this pandemic. But our less fortunate brothers and sisters need to know that we care about them. A small gift of hygiene products can bring a small ray of hope to someone during a storm.

Let’s continue to reach out and be intentional with our connections in the communities we serve.

Holsey Chapel CME Church located at 416 Cole Street, Marietta, Georgia, celebrated their Annual Women Day, Sunday, March 28, 2021, at 2:00p.m. Dr. Louise Brown, First Lady of the Sixth Episcopal District was the speaker for this joyous occasion and did a wonderful job. The theme was Christian Women Walking By Faith. Our colors were all kinds of purple.

Annie Brown of Holsey Chapel is our Woman of the Year. Her group, No. 5, raised the most money and she raised the most money in group #5. Sister Brown was presented with a large bouquet of flowers at her home by a florist the Saturday before the program and a beautiful plaque on Sunday, among other goods.

Thank you Holsey, my family and friends for your love and support for Women Day 2021. To God be the Glory!

On July 10, 2021, one of Saint Paul CME Church’s very own, Rev. Helen Sinclair celebrated her 101st Birthday. To commemorate this wonderful celebration, family, friends and community members came together and met at Jessie “Ma” Houston Park in Chicago’s Kenwood Community. They not only celebrated her birthday, they also unveiled the soon to be painted Mural of her image next to her mom, who was a Civil Rights Activist and first African American Woman allowed into the Prison System to minister to inmates. The park where the celebration took place is named after her mother.

For many years, Rev. Sinclair was identified as Jessie Ma Houston’s daughter. However, over a short amount of time, Rev. Sinclair, as well, solidified herself as a Champion for those incarcerated. Rev. Sinclair made it her life’s mission to not only visit and minister to those in jail, but also to advocate for them before Governors, Wardens, Mayors, Prosecutors, Judges and Police. She is well known around the City of Chicago and the State of Illinois for being a voice for the voiceless.

Surrounded by family, friends, and her pastor, Rev. Sinclair stated, “I am grateful to God for giving me the energy and drive to be a blessing in this manner.

I am also grateful for Bishop Dotcy I. Isom for assigning me to the Prison Ministry through the CME Church. Everyone present listened as friends shared her history and long time membership with the CME Church.

Because of recent health challenges, Rev. Sinclair will be moving to Jacksonville, Florida, to live with her son. However, she reminded us that living in another state will not stop her from continuing to be a voice for God’s Creation.

On June 17, 2021, five long-time residents of Denton, Texas, were honored at a ceremony attended

by Mayor Gerard Hudspeth, Police Chief Frank Dixon, Rev. Willie Hudspeth, Rev. Cedric D. Chambers, Elder Kenneth Davis, Rev. Homer Webb II, and members of the Denton Community. Two of the honorees are current members of Mt. Pilgrim CME - Mrs. Ruby Cole and Mrs. Betty Kimble, and one was a lifetime member of Mt. Pilgrim - Mrs. Alice Alexander. Organizers of the ceremony recognized the community service of Mrs. Alma Clark, Mrs. Ruby Cole, Mrs. Betty Kimble, Mrs. Dorothy Minter, and Mrs. Alice Alexander by dedicating a mural and reading proclamations issued in their honor. Four of the honorees gathered at the underpass at the corner of Robinson Street and Bell Avenue where the mural was relocated. The fifth honoree, Alice Alexander, was honored posthumously. The mural of the ladies was painted by artist Dan Black, and it celebrates their commitment, community activism, courage, and Christian love. Margaret Neale and Willie Hudspeth were instrumental in getting the faces of Clark, Cole, Kimble, Minter, and Alexander placed on the mural.

Located at the entrance to the Southeast Denton Community, the mural is a testament to the shared values of the honorees: duty, service, Christian love, collaboration, and perseverance. The title of the mural is "Foundation of Our Shared History," and each honoree is vividly displayed. Each woman in the mural worked tirelessly to make things better for those who followed. The women organized tutoring for college students in the community who needed additional assistance, supported and encouraged voting, worked the polls, served on many community boards and committees, worked through the NAACP to support students entering college, and worked with their local police department to make their community better.

Ruby Cole served on the Denton Planning and Zoning Commission for many years, and she worked to bring Southeast Denton into the mainstream of the city. Her efforts were instrumental in developing Neighbors Improving Community Environment (NICE) and Community Oriented Policing (COP), where residents cleaned their neighborhood and the Fred Moore Park on Saturdays in the early 1970s. The effort to clean the neighborhood was a collaborative project with the local police department. The project was nationally recognized for community policing, and it paved the way for a campaign to keep Denton Beautiful.

Alma Clark, Betty Kimble, and Ruby Cole were among the first African American participants in the Denton Christian Women's Interracial Fellowship (DCWIF) and the Association of Christian Women. As members, they shattered racial barriers, demonstrated our shared humanity, and created networks that brought services to the Southeast Denton Community.

Kimble and former Mayor Euline Brock worked through the (DCWIF) to desegregate restaurants. Dorothy Minter and Alice Alexander were educators who

nurtured the academic and character development of their students. Minter was an administrator in the Denton Independent School District where she advocated for and worked with students who were overlooked and underserved, and Alexander was a beloved first-grade teacher for more than 40 years.

Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Denton was renamed in honor of Mrs. Alexander in 2018; the school is known as Alice Moore Alexander Elementary School.

Each woman overcame her share of adversity: racial desegregation, limited resources, and Jim Crow Laws restricting access to public places like restaurants and libraries, but each responded to these barriers with determination and perseverance. Kimble, Cole, and Clark recall poorly equipped facilities in their school, no access to the public library, receiving discarded books, and other limitations. However, Kimble says that despite the challenges, they still had good teachers who came to their homes and had access to books through the neighborhood Bookmobile. Cole, Clark, Minter and Kimble worked to change things in the Denton Community, and Clark says that helping people was something that was instilled in her when she was a child. She became an excellent reader as a child, and she remembers helping her classmates with their reading assignments. Helping others comes naturally to each of the honorees, and the mural in their honor reminds each of us of their dedication, willingness to help, and desire to serve.

Each honoree's life reflects Galatians 6: 9-10 NIV "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

DR. JAMES A. HILL, SR. CELEBRATES 70 YEARS IN MINISTRY Submitted by Dr. Elmar L. Hill

Dr. James A. Hill, Sr. recently celebrated 70 years in the ministry, having entered the work on October 5, 1950, at St. Paul CME Church in Chicago, Illinois. And he still preaches when asked by his pastor, Rev. Patti J. Moore of the Porter Temple CME Church in Dallas, Texas.

Dr. Hill was a candidate for the General Secretary of the Department of Christian Education at the 1990 General Conference. He is credited with leading the following churches in liquidating their church mortgages: [1] [2] [3] [4]

Womack Temple - Inkster, Michigan Laymen Chapel - South Bend, Indiana New Hope - Hennings, Tennessee (the church of Alex Haley, author of Roots) St. Mark - Longview, Texas

He also led in paying over $100,000 on church indebtedness at Long Chapel Church in Lufkin, Texas.

Dr. Hill has taught all over the United States at the high school, college and seminary levels.

He is proud to add to his LEGACY not only years of labors, but he is also the possessor of the Doctor of Divinity, Doctor of Theology, Doctor of Ministry, Doctor of Humane Letters and the Doctor of Jurisprudence degrees.

Ezell Honored by NAACP Submitted by Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas

Student athlete Miles Ezell was recently honored as Student of the Week for his consistent and year-long academic success by the local chapter of the NAACP. Ezell, then a sophomore at Bourbon County High School in Paris, Kentucky, participated in basketball and soccer and performed well in both sports while simultaneously maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0.

According to the student, getting a good education is not only important to all students but is especially important to African Americans because it provides a solid foundation and paves the way for future success. His plans for the future include matriculation on the collegiate level, including participation in athletics.

The Second Episcopal District is proud of Miles and his accomplishments, and we congratulate him on receiving this honor. We pray that God will continue to look with favor upon him for future success.

University of Aberdeen awarded grant for science-engaged theology Submitted by Jo Milne University of Aberdeen

The University of Aberdeen is among nine UK theological colleges selected for an award to promote scienceengaged theology.

The ‘Science for Seminaries’ programme run by research project Equipping Christian Leadership in an Age of Science (ECLAS) has awarded the University’s Department of Divinity a £60,000 grant to enable it to incorporate science into the curriculum.

As part of the programme the University will refine at least one core module and host wider-reaching activities which model how science engages with theology. Theological teachers and scientific advisors will be invited to retreats and conferences to share their progress and hear from leading thinkers in science-engaged theology.

Science for Seminaries is modelled on a previous successful programme run by AAAS DoSER in North America.

The awards run for the 2021-2 academic year.

Professor Tom Greggs, Head of Divinity at the University of Aberdeen said: “We are delighted that the University of Aberdeen is to be a recipient of a science in seminaries award.

“Divinity seeks to be classical and cutting-edge, and this grant will allow for the integration of hard and medical sciences within the curriculum as well as an outreach and knowledge transfer to the surrounding community. This is yet another feather in the cap our world-leading department.”

The University shares the award along with London School of Theology, Nazarene Theological College, Ripon College Cuddesdon, Regents Theological College, Cranmer Hall, St Augustine’s College of Theology, Sarum College and Wycliffe Hall.

Professor Iain Torrance, Pro-Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen and President Emeritus of Princeton Theological Seminary, added: “The global pandemic has shown the same virus and vastly different kinds of response from different governments and societies. The acceptability of lockdown as a measure draws on notions of wholeness and well-being.

“That is one dimension in the range of the ever-evolving debate between science and belief. Ultimately this proposal is about the practical exploration of the relationship between psychopharmaceutical intervention and spirituality. Nothing could be more contemporary or more crucial.”

Obituaries

Joining the Great Cloud

Dr. Dixie L. West Dixie Lee Warren (West) was born on March 8, 1936, in Olney, Illinois, to Bernice Elizabeth (Jones) and Walter A. Warren. She received her Masters from Eden Theological Seminary in 1985. She received her Doctorate from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary in 1993.

Although Reverend West’s parents were not churchgoers, she had a beloved aunt who brought her to church, and she remembered feeling the holy spirit as a young child. She was officially saved in her late 20’s and received the call to preach around 1965.

Around 1968 she became the minister for a small church in Bluford, Illinois. It didn’t have an indoor toilet and one of the first things she accomplished there was putting in an indoor toilet. This building spirit would drive her in her later years.

In 1986, Reverend Dr. Dixie L. West became the first female pastor of St. James CME Church in Freeport, Illinois, and was also the first woman to be given an assignment by the conference. Under her leadership the church purchased 3.35 acres on East Empire St. After approval by the Quarterly Conference, Presiding Elder, and Bishop, the groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 20, 1990.

A key moment for the church occurred on December 21, 1991, when the members of the church marched from the 109 S. Sherman Avenue address to the church’s present address at 1001 E. Empire Street.

In July of 1998, construction of a new parsonage on the church’s property began and was completed in December of that same year. On August 1, 2004, the mortgage for the parsonage was burned in celebration of completion of payment for the parsonage. She is the longest serving pastor of the church to date.

She was the first woman presiding elder in the 3rd Episcopal District. Dr. West spent her final years of pastoring in the Alabama area, serving churches in Gadsden, Auburn and Beatrice. Her last post was at New Purchase CME Church in Beatrice, Alabama, serving as their pastor at least until July 2011 under the leadership of this Editor (who then served as Presiding Elder of the Mobile District, Southeast Alabama Region, Fifth Episcopal District).

Dixie L. West was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and lifelong learner and teacher. She peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, January 27, 2021. We are confident she is joyfully singing, celebrating, and playing the piano in heaven with her relatives who passed on before her.

Due to covid restrictions, services were limited to immediate family. In lieu of flowers, interested persons were asked to please consider a donation to a charity or scholarship of their choice.

Announcing the 2021-2022 Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education (CCPE) program Connectional Clinical Pastoral Education Program, an educational experience for ministers and laypersons of all denominations to enhance their professional pastoral skills and personal development but are unable to be in a traditional CPE program due to time or other restrictions. It also enables probationary ministers in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME) to meet the requirement of one unit of CPE for full connection clergy membership. This unique program brings ministers from across the country together and in small groups for interactive, reflective learning using their own community and place of ministry as the context.

There will be written assignments, readings and some internet-based assignments. The program operates under the auspices of the Academy for Public Theology of the Fifth Episcopal District of the CME Church. The faculty is comprised of certified CPE Supervisors and certified professional chaplains.

TUITION is $500, which includes $50 non-refundable application fee, a $100 deposit once accepted into the program and a balance of $350 payable before the program begins. The tuition includes the required books. There is currently no scholarship program, however a payment plan can be arranged.
