The Ballot Is in Your Hands, Pt. 2 It has been said that the person who is presently in an office may show you what their future service might be based on what they have already done, or how they have attempted to achieve certain promises or aspirations made by them in the past. With this in mind, I shall seek to show the potential of Presidential candidate Joe Biden.

Gun violence. The Biden administration has invested in putting more cops on the beat, introducing policing reforms intended to promote citizen safety, and promoting community policing. The president signed significant gun violence prevention legislation, including enhanced background checks, and continues to seek a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

He is providing for increased mental health services in schools, and under his watch there has been a Rev. Dr. Ore L. Spragin, Jr., decrease in the number of violent crimes in the nation.

Editor Justice system. President Biden has diversified the Supreme Court and is continuing the practice in lower court appointees. He has set forth legislation to pardon federal convictions due to simple marijuana possession and is seeking to reschedule marijuana as a drug. It is my observation that he has allowed the Attorney General, the Justice Department, and the legal system to do their job, even when it comes to his own family, or to the investigation of the insurrection of January 6, 2022. His administration is actively fighting voter suppression, protecting voter rights for all Americans.

Healthcare. The Biden administration provided free COVID-19 tests to over 700 million people, reinforced the Affordable Care Act, and improved Medicare benefits. Over the last three years, there has been increased spending for cancer and other medical research. The cost of many prescription drugs for seniors has been capped, and other medical and healthcare benefits have been planned. A plan has been developed and released to address food disparities. Not least of all, this administration has presented and supported legislation affirming women’s reproductive and human rights, including the right to have an abortion.

Jobs and the economy. Joe Biden reportedly has produced the two strongest years of job growth in US history. There have been infrastructure investments throughout the land. Unemployment is near all-time lows among Blacks, other people of color, and those with disabilities. He has been bringing back jobs from overseas and promoting American manufacturing and unions, while also seeking to expand overtime guarantees for millions and to reform the tax code so it is more equitable and the rich pay their fair share. Energy costs for families is going down, including the price of gasoline. He is fighting to protect Social Security, to remove current discriminatory lending practices by financial institutions, and working to promote the small farmer.

Education. Notably, the Biden-Harris White House has provided for student loan debt relief, including the possibilities of loan reexamination and cancellation. They have increased the value of Pell Grants while seeking to rein in schools that award certificates and degrees but leave their graduates in high debt. Book bans in school libraries have been denounced, and there is a desire to expand pre-K and educational opportunities for the working poor and middle class. Finally, over 16 million households are now receiving lower cost or free high-speed internet.

Environment. Biden has been aggressively pursuing a significant decrease in America’s contribution to the destruction of the environment by promoting electric vehicles and other forms of clean energy and funding cleanup for contaminated lands.

Foreign affairs. President Joe Biden is actively strengthening relations with allies and affirming our nation’s commitment to international economic partnerships. He is providing for greater access for foreigners from the southern border to come to America while simultaneously trying to improve border security. Further, he is taking measures to counter and rise above China both militarily and economically, and, lastly, he is supporting Ukraine and Israel in their war efforts.

These are commendable actions for the good of the society as I see it. However, I do not agree with or see something for me in all these areas (e.g. the price of my gas seems to be going up. And why do non-Hispanics seem to have only barriers to admission in the immigration discussion?), but this is what is observable and known. The real questions are whether you have experienced these things for yourself, how you feel about them, and whether you believe you can trust the candidate to continue to at least try to move things in this direction. This is a partial picture of a man who is seeking re-election. As with candidate Trump, candidate Biden, too, has shown you who he is … and who he is not. The ballot is in your hands, America. The ballot is in your hands, CMEs. What will you say come election day?

OFFICIAL NOTICE: General Connectional Board 2024 Pursuant to ¶1000.6, §2, of The Book of Discipline, Revised 2022, the 2024 General Connectional Board, previously scheduled for Dallas, Texas, during the week of the Unity Summit, will meet Monday and Tuesday, September 2-3, 2024, beginning at 10:00 A.M. Central Daylight Time at the same site as the Unity Summit – Sheraton Dallas Hotel, 400 Olive Street, Dallas, Texas 75201.

General Connectional Board members are requested to reserve the dates of September 2nd-3rd for the General Connectional Board meeting, and to expect a call for the Standing Committees and other committee meetings from the respective Chairs of each Standing Committee or the Senior Bishop for other committees.

While we anticipate a full day (morning, afternoon, evening) schedule for the first day, we anticipate a morning to early afternoon (about 3:00 - 4:00 adjournment) for the morning and afternoon of the second day, but we will adjourn after all business is completed.

THAT WE ALL MAY BECOME ONE Saint John 17:21 AWAY TO AFRICA: A TRIP OF TEN LIFETIMES Submitted by Bishop Ricky D. Helton Presiding Prelate, Tenth Episcopal District

The Foundation To begin commemorating the success of the CME Church Annual Conferences held in the Tenth Episcopal District on February 5-25, 2024, I, Bishop Ricky D. Helton, must first mention the 2023 Annual Conferences which provided the foundations for Be Bold, Face Now, Embrace Next, and See New. It was in each one of those Annual Conferences that plans were made for what was witnessed in 2024. While conducting my first 2023 Annual Conference in Uyo, Nigeria, I had a revelation that the entire country of Nigeria could one day come together to celebrate one combined Annual Conference with a focus on Theme Picture - Bishop Helton worship. Please note that the entire country of Nigeria had never ever come together as one collective body. The 2023 Ghana/Togo Annual Conference rallied together as well to focus on expanding and building new congregations. Likewise, Liberia in 2023 decided to come together to focus on evangelistic needs, economic development, and missions.

Each country left their respective Annual Conference in 2023 with a clear mandate for 2024: Unity and Empowerment.

With such clear mandates from four countries in 2023, excitement loomed large as vigorous efforts were put forth into planning for 2024. Committees and Sub-Committees were formulated and eagerly began to plan and organize themselves. Here in the USA, the theme Away to Africa: A Trip of Ten Lifetimes also was born. An invitation went forth for people to join my wife and me during the conferences. I am happy to say that all nine African Annual Conferences were successful and were witnessed by fifty-five (55) plus persons from the United States—which included Bishops, General Officers, members, and non-members from around the CME Connection.

The Nigeria Experience On February 5, 2024, our journey began as the first wave of us flew from Atlanta, Georgia to Lagos, Nigeria.

Two days later in Uyo, Nigeria 250 plus churches came together at the National Ibom Hall to conduct our first combined Annual Conference. This endeavor was truly an example of being bold. Twelve months of meticulous planning by local leaders and members all came to a head as the five-day conference began on February 7th and lasted until February 11th. The National Theme was: “THAT WE ALL MAY BECOME ONE” (John 17:21).

There were over 5000 registered Delegates.

Continued from previous page I was equally overjoyed to host Bishop James B. Walker of the 7th Episcopal District and Bishop and Mrs. Charley Hames, Jr. of the 9th Episcopal District. Each one assisted me during the Annual Conference along with General Officers and CME Pastors—not to mention the other CME members from across the CME Connection. A special shout out goes to Dr. Theresa Duhart, General Secretary/Chief Information Officer – Department of Communication and Information Technology of the CME Church for making this epic Annual Conference available to the entire CME Church via live-stream. For the first time in CME history, new satellite technology was used to allow CME’s from around the world to view an Annual Conference that was over 7000 miles away via Starlink. This truly was a Mega Event!

One of the highlights was on Friday February 9, 2024.

His Excellence, the newly elected Governor of Akwa Ibom State, the Honorable Umo B. Eno, came with his entire Cabinet and greeted our Conference. He was so moved by the large crowd that he gave the CME Church in Nigeria a gift of twenty million Naira (about $15,000 US Dollars). In addition to this, His Excellence invited the U.S. Delegation to the Governor’s Mansion for an Estate Dinner that was fit for a King/Queen.

Bishop Helton and Governor Eno Upon entering the Dining Facility, he personally greeted each one of us and served us a spectacular meal. A special shout out to Dr. Victor Taylor, General Secretary of Finance & Investments & CFO CME Church, and Dr. Friday Ben, Special Assistant to the Governor and CME Layman, for their assistance in securing Governor Eno. On Sunday as the Conference was about to close, two Congregations came forth to join the CME Church. Each pastor and congregation averaged over 75 members.

The Ghana Experience After leaving Nigeria, the U.S. Delegation visited the Ghana/Togo Region. It too was an overwhelming success. Prior to the Annual Conference held at Bethel CME Church, the group was able to enjoy four days of exploration and tours in the Accra, Ghana area. With the focus being on church building and expansion, seven new congregations were added into the CME Church. Each new congregation participated in the CME Ritual that welcomed each person into the CME Church. The Region embraced the concept of face now, as work to expand the CME Church was witnessed. We are praying that the new congregations will continue to witness all the good things that God is doing in the Ghana/Togo Region in our beloved Denomination. Plans were vigorously made for land to be purchased in Togo which will enable the CME Church to build its first church edifice in that country. During the Ghana Annual Conference, U.S. pastors and ministers spoke. Lastly, plans were made to host the 2025 Annual Conference at the newly built edifice in Ghana where the pastor is the Rev. Godwin Adu (the 2024 CME Pastor of the Year Recipient for the Tenth Episcopal District).

The Liberia Experience From Ghana, our journey took us to Liberia where the Conference was hosted by the historic Mary Sharp CME Church in Monrovia. The focus of this Conference centered on evangelism, economic development, and missions. On the first day, a special workshop was held regarding empowering women. This was followed by a two-night revival wherein speakers from the U.S. electrified all the congregants present; a special economic development workshop was conducted; and a one-night national musical concert to promote the CME Church’s presence in Liberia was held, where U.S. and Liberian CMEs danced and worshipped together in harmony.

These events preceded the Annual Conference. Various donations of funds and items from local churches and individuals throughout the CME Connection were given to the three CME schools that are in Liberia. The six days of events had the delegation from the U.S. excited to witness the joy from each student and member of the Liberian CME Church.

Liberia Sewing Project

To embrace next and see new, the idea of economic development and missions was also realized as the Liberia Region launched the Sewing Class Project. Funds collected by the U.S. members were collected and used to purchase new sewing machines, stands, materials and supplies, and prepare the building. The new sewing concepts were introduced by Rev. Elaine Crittendon who was assisted by members of the U.S. delegation. With this project, students will be trained to sew items that can be used to sustain the Conference and themselves.

During the Liberia Annual Conference, the CME pastors and ministers were able to speak, while others participated in the Missionary March, taught Sunday School, danced, worshipped, and fellowshipped. The Conference was honored to host representatives from the Liberia A.M.E. Zion Church, Lutheran Church, the Baptist Church, and several independent Churches. It was truly an ecumenical experience.

A Trip of Ten Lifetimes As Bishop of the Tenth Episcopal District, I cannot really express my gratitude and pleasure of hosting the 2024 Annual Conferences in Ghana/Togo, Liberia, and Nigeria, and the opportunity for so many persons to witness it with me through technology. Please keep the Tenth Episcopal District in your prayers as we endeavor to be faithful to what God has called us to do—to bring souls to Christ. Stay tuned for more information to come as the Tenth Episcopal District is on the move……

From Eve - the Sinner to Mary - the Saint A Review of Bishop Othal Hawthorne Lakey's Book Submitted by Ore L. Spragin, Jr. Editor, The Christian Index

Beginning with the assertions that women are generally treated with misogyny and that this is a man's world, Bishop Lakey affirms the woman’s original coequality with the man in all things until the event of temptation and sin. He further defines and asserts femininity as not a woman's place or feeling, but a yearning for the spiritual union or oneness with God that was lost in The Fall. He proposes to show this femininity as revealed through the historical women selected to serve as the subject matter for this book.

One of the first things he does is to espouse his view that man, as a being, was first, not last, in the created order, and he spends some time crafting support for this argument. In true Lakey style, from the outset he writes to a primarily Black audience, or at least one familiar with Black idioms and other expressions. On a broader scale, however, he assumes that whoever his readers are, they have some basic familiarity with the biblical text and theology. All said, his introduction reveals a quiet protest against theories of evolution.

Eve is revealed to be the mother of all living beings, and thus the mother of human history, though Adam is labelled the father of human creation or productivity, in the same way that other creation produced progeny or offspring after its kind. In his mind, God did create another being, but not necessarily out of Adam’s rib, and thus a secondary or supplementary being, but rather a complimentary one, again arguing against evolutionism.

Note his hermeneutics on “dust” and “rib.”

In discussing Sarah, it seems this time it is the man who is to blame for the unfaithful missteps of the woman who is perceived as wanting to be a willing and obedient part of the fulfillment of God's redemptive will and plan. The importance of Sarah in Biblical history is made very clear, though the last statement about her seems a bit anti-climactic. Though Sarah introduces what the author terms Biblical history, it is still a man's world.

I do not follow his argument of purpose for an ahistorical Moses. While I agree with his treatment of the events, I am not convinced this is why Moses is never worshipped. I do not see where the Biblical text ever shows any attempt at such, and, aside from his conversations with God, Moses never assumes or takes any credit for any of the miracles but always accredits God. After introducing the reader to the woman Miriam through the man Moses, Othal Lakey’s treatment of her shows God's treatment of her, as it pertains to her interaction with Moses’ wife, as woman to woman, wife to wife, and makes her as unavailable and distant to her husband as she would make the Cushite wife to Moses.

Lakey sees no causal relationship between Miriam and Aaron's statement about God speaking to them and their initial statement about Moses' wife. But prejudice shows itself in strange and disconnected ways, and in the end, God corrected both the obvious and the quiet racism.

Lakey’s concluding treatment of Miriam can be logically followed, mostly, but is somewhat difficult to receive because it is so speculative. Such, however, is sometimes the nature of Biblical studies.

The discourse on Rahab, which follows, is much less awkward and follows more closely the design intent of the book, showing both the relevance and the importance of women acting outside of relegated femininity as persons of faith, who in their own ways also established and promoted Biblical history alongside men.

A natural historian, Bishop Lakey does an excellent job of weaving together the Biblical text and including insightful and illuminative extra-Biblical information. Most importantly, he shows the oft secluded but nonetheless purposeful hand of God manipulating and even driving unfolding earthly Biblical history and the heavenly plan of salvation.

It is often said, "Things don't just happen; you have to make them happen." What this book shows is that there is a will and a hand above and beyond that of humans and that no human or other being may usurp or ignore. Lakey uses phrases and literary and other figures from the vast, but common, Black cultural experience to illustrate and breathe life into the text.

Perhaps by this technique he intends to connect the Black experience to that of the pain and misunderstanding these women experienced as they, like Black folk of history and present, were committed to, that is, were held to a status and treatment of "less than" or insignificance, secondary and background … as supporting actors even when playing leading roles.

His inclusion and exposition of the person and narrative of Ruth exposes how even the weakness of imposed femininity could be used in a powerful way by those of the female gender.

Further, he concludes from Ruth, Rahab, and perhaps others, that the God and faith of the Bible are inclusive of all peoples and not exclusive.

Lakey maintains the thesis of "something within that draws one to God" throughout the book and applies it, or rather observes it, in both Jewish and non-Jewish women.

Chapter six is written with Esther in mind and brings forward the confrontation of the beauty of the natural with the surpassingly more beautiful imago Dei within every woman. Here Lakey asserts that the exterior appearance surely combines with the interior “call” to bring into existence the salvific will and word of God. On another note, Bishop Lakey identifies Haman's reasons and his acts towards the Jews as the root and beginning of antisemitism.

With Job's wife, he argues well for her expression of faith within the context of her theological dilemma caused by present circumstances. In fact, it might well be said that he shows how she is indeed vindicated by the very God she implores her husband to curse. To this end, Bishop Lakey proposes that her understanding of God is different than and beyond that of her husband's.

As the author moves to a discourse on Elizabeth, I am led to wonder that since this is a book about women - and not just FOR women - does he connect Elizabeth to Miriam? All the indicators to do so are there, but there is no Continued on next page April 2024 • The Christian Index

Notwithstanding this absence, he does make the attempt, and in the process, we see Elizabeth, still like the others, in the shadow of a man, her husband, Zechariah. Lakey uses both spellings of the name, "Ze..." and "Za..." at random, though the Lukan text is singular in its usage of the spelling "Ze..."

In Elizabeth, the author makes us to see woman as not only necessary for companionship and procreation, but also that her reproductive capacity (capability?) is essential to God's plan of salvation ... a plan almost forgotten from the time of and punishment of (promise to?) Eve. Our eyes are opened, our spiritual understanding enlightened to the beautiful and honorable (honored?) place of women in the history of the world and of salvation and not just of the world, bringing to my mind such persons as Joan of Arc, Harriett Tubman, Cleopatra, etc.

If all were omitted and only the story of Elizabeth written, this would be enough to prove the thesis of the author. Yet all the others corroborate and reinforce his claim of the divine order of woman.

The chapter on Mary Magdalene, just as inspiring as those before it, is quite possibly the most informational, as the author seeks to clarify much historical and present-day misinformation. This Mary is exonerated of her reputation as a prostitute and is further exalted as the first complete apostle and proclaimer/preacher of the resurrection, the gospel (good news) concerning Jesus Christ. First to witness and to bear witness to the living Lord, her message became essential and a centerpiece of the apostolic ministry leading to the development and growth of the church.

A key observation of Lakey is that Mary went looking to see a grave, the final resting place of a body, but found instead an empty grave: no body. He writes that it is not an empty tomb but a risen and living Jesus that was Mary's final sight and message and which is the basis for all subsequent preaching, faith, and forgiveness of sins.

In the final chapter, Mary the mother of Jesus is presented, and Joseph is also presented. His role does not overshadow hers but is instead complimentary. By his actions towards rather than against her, Joseph provides social covering for Mary and preserves her saintly integrity, which integrity continues into the adulthood and ministry of Jesus.

The introduction of each woman is unique, some having extensive résumés; others having little or none. Yet each is shown in their place as important to the Biblical narrative and salvation history.

Ultimately, Othal Lakey concludes that Jesus was a human baby born to an ordinary human mother. Thus, he writes, "Mary's impregnation by the Holy Spirit interrupted, 'broke into' human history ..." Human history occurs by procreation. But the conception of Jesus was by the Holy Spirit, leading him to observe that the church has done to Mary what he says God did not allow to happen with Moses: Moses was never worshipped.

Through this book, Lakey has shown how each woman received the call of God – some by circumstance, some directly – and responded to that "something within," thereby revealing the imago Dei within them and becoming participants in world and Biblical and salvation history.

Give me a clean heart If we hear with our ears only, we will miss too much. Although God gave us two ears, we must listen with our heart. Our ears hear sound that vibrates on our ear drum and is translated through our brain and thoughts. But the heart works in tandem with our intellect, understanding and spiritual maters. What is heard with our ears may never reach our heart. God speaks to our heart, and we respond by faith.

We have heard, seen and experienced a lot over the last month in the human condi�on. But … did we really hear with our hearts? Our collec�ve boldness must be with our hearts aligned, working to do the Will of the Lord and helping to shape healthy Churches, communi�es, and other ins�tu�ons where we journey. God calls us to serve with our whole heart, but serving requires out heart to be clean. But, how? According to the scripture Jermiah 17:9, the heart is decei�ul, wicked. Who can know it but God?

It’s an inside Job Being bold is an inside job, a job not for those who are �mid, afraid, pessimis�c, or nega�ve. Being bold takes on a certain percentage of risk and courage. We must be clear about what we want and how to achieve what is necessary to obtain the desired outcome. For instance, the local church needs bold pastors and laity; we see the church crea�ng vibrancy. It will take doing things differently, thinking differently and responding differently. The hymn writer Lucie Eddie Campbell, wrote these words, Something Within 1. Preachers and teachers would make their appeal, Figh�ng as soldiers on great batlefields; When to their pleadings my poor heart did yield, All I can say, there is something within. (Hymn #275, CME Hymnal, first stanza) In January of 2023, Bishop Ricky D. Helton made a bold move, led by the Holy Spirit, to bring all the 10th District in Nigeria together to worship. On March 5, 2024, a team of CME's led by Bishop Ricky D. Helton and Lady Helton made a pilgrimage to the 10th Episcopal District Nigeria Unity Conference. He prayed and planned a year in advance with the theme: "That We May Be One." What a powerful witness and testament to the Church. With vibrant worship, we developed a oneness in the spirit and heart. With different backgrounds and stories, we had a few things in common, but the main commonality was oneness in heart to worship God freely and unapologe�cally.

Ask God for a Clean Heart Evangelism and Missions calls for a clean heart to serve this present age. Stop now and pray the short prayer, “Lord, God, in the name of Jesus the Christ, give me a clean heart and I'll follow you. Amen.”

Why do we need a clean heart? We need a clean heart that we may be one with God and each other.

WHAT IS ORDINATION? Carmichael Crutchfield, Ph.D.

A United Methodist pastor friend of mine invited me to a mock Committee on Ministry Board of Examination.

It was interesting listening to the candidates for ordination give their understandings of ordination.

It caused me to reflect upon my own ordinations and to realize no one has ever asked me to explain ordination.

Also, I have served on the Committee on Ministerial Examination for two different Annual Conferences and have never been asked to explain ordination. I have taught preachers on trial and no one has ever asked me about ordination. I have even taught classes on ordination, but not been asked about its meaning.

However, since my beginning seminary days, I have required preachers who have accepted the call to preach under my watch as a pastor to read The Yoke of Obedience: The Meaning of Ordination in Methodism by Dennis Campbell. I have recently completed teaching a class at Memphis Theological Seminary entitled “Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Doctrine and Polity.” A review of the CME Discipline gives detailed information about how one becomes ordained, but nothing about why one is ordained.

I shared with the students that I understand ordination in the context of the general ministry of the Church to be a process that challenges the candidate for ordination to examine his/her sense of call, provides a mechanism for the Church to examine how the candidate functions in a position of servant leadership, and provides a pathway to examine the candidate’s understanding of God’s gracious and loving presence in the world that God created.

The process of ordination verifies that the candidate is capable of theological reflection in the context of World events, that he/she can recognize God’s presence in the world. The process also verifies that the candidate is making a commitment to uphold the highest standards of Christian living and to teach the Doctrine of the Church while agreeing to be a conduit of God’s grace and love.

The CME Church relies primarily on a Committee of Ministerial Examination to ensure that ordination is properly administered and that candidates are provided education. The CME Church’s implicit curriculum includes a disregard for the need for formal theological education prior to ordination.

My experience causes me to pause with great concern. When I accepted the call to preach, I already had bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business related majors, accounting, and management. I grew up in the CME Church. It was only after my first year in seminary that I learned the meaning of worship and preaching. It was only after my first year that I knew anything about pastoral care. Later in the seminary journey I learned what theology meant and how to do theological reflection. Most importantly, I learned about the meaning of ordination.

Now after 30 years in the ordained ministry, I am concerned that CME preachers are being ordained without an understanding of what is taking place. I am not as concerned about the knowledge of the procedures or ritual.

We are good at teaching those things.

The event of ordination confirms that the Church has examined the candidate using agreed upon methodology, found that he/she meets all the required criteria, and also demonstrates clear potential to continue to do so in the future while continuing to work in the context of mutual interdependence with other ordained persons.

The seal of ordination is not a sign of special holiness, or a mark of being set aside for a special position in the culture of the Church. Ordained persons are authorized to preach and teach the word of God, to administer the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, equip and mentor the laity for ministry, exercise responsible pastoral oversight, and diligently administer the Discipline.

What is the significance of ordination? I am concerned about this question. As a CME, I am aware that every tradition receives or views ordination in a differing light. In Catholic and Orthodox traditions ordination is a sacrament—a rite invested and imbued with God’s visible and palpable grace. A mystery, yes—but also an outward sign declaring that the ordained person (priest) is set apart by God, made holy through the grace of Christ, and invested with certain authority and sacramental privilege to lead the church.

In most other Protestant traditions, however, ordination can be viewed as anything from a local affirmation of a pastor’s service and leadership to a life-long status of specialized ministry among the priesthood of all believers.

What does it mean to CME’s?

Ordination means service in light of the gospel call to serve. Ordination is visibility. Someone must break the bread, bless the water, visit the sick, and address the multitudes. Ordination is the invitation to die and to place oneself, one’s lifeless self, into the hands of God. Ordination is recognition. Recognition of one’s sins and weaknesses. Ordination is about God’s grace. To be ordained is to be accepted despite one’s limitations, sins and failures. Ordination declares to the church, “You must love in spite of …”, “You must live in God’s grace, celebrate it, claim it . . . in spite of your sins.

The Starlink Internet Pilot Project: Connecting, Engaging, and Uniting the CME Church at the Tenth Episcopal District’s 2024 Unity Conference in Uyo, Nigeria Dr. Theresa Duhart, General Secretary/Chief Information Officer Department of Communication and Information Technology (CIT)

Presiding Bishop Ricky D. Helton of the Tenth Episcopal District recently convened an awesome first Unity Annual Conference in Uyo, Nigeria from February 7-11, 2024, with the theme, ‘THAT WE ALL MAY BE ONE’. After collaborative conversations with Bishop Helton, Bishop James B. Walker, Chair of the CIT Department, and the College of Bishops to provide Internet access to our members in Africa, the Starlink satellite Internet project was funded and launched in Nigeria at the Unity Annual Conference. All sessions of the Unity Conference were live streamed, and may be viewed on demand at the CME Facebook page (https://facebook.com/ thecmechurch) I was grateful for the opportunity to travel to West Africa for the first time, connect with our CME members in Nigeria, and witness this awesome Unity Conference and the cultural diversity under the leadership of Bishop Helton. I traveled with Bishop Helton and First Lady Loretta Helton and the large delegation from the United States to Nigeria. The delegation included Presiding Bishop James B. Walker of the Seventh Episcopal District; my Presiding Bishop Charley Hames and First Lady Michelle Gaskill-Hames of the Ninth Episcopal District; General Officer colleagues Dr. Victor Taylor and Mrs. Wanda Taylor, Dr. Leon Moore, and Dr. Ore Spragin; Chief Administrative Officer Dr. Pene’ Woods; Justice Presiding Elder Rev. Kevin Agee and First Lady Gwendolyn Agee; Dr. Paul D. Brown, Dean/President of Phillips School of Theology; Presiding Elders Rev. Dr. Clifford Harris, Rev. Jetson Maness, and Rev. Diana Casteel; Pastors Rev. Robert Williams, Dr. Herman Skip Mason, Dr. Da’Henri Thurmond, and Rev. Courtney Adams; and many other CME clergy and laity who shared in journey. Bishop and Mrs. Helton were gracious hosts who strategically planned the Unity Annual Conference and journey to Nigeria.

The Starlink pilot project provided an opportunity to connect our CME members in West Africa with our global CME members in the United States and the world, as they received greetings from the bishops and General Officers, and presentations via Zoom with the Women’s Missionary Council International President Dr. Jacqueline I. Scott and Department of Lay Ministries General Secretary Mr. Shannon Faulk.

Starlink offers high-speed satellite Internet service with unlimited data in areas where traditional broadband providers cannot. This includes rural areas, remote locations, and even areas affected by natural disasters. Since Starlink’s service is delivered via satellites, it is not dependent on terrestrial infrastructure, making it a reliable option for persons with limited Internet access.

Briefly, the Starlink satellite dish was packed in my suitcase and brought to Africa, set up and pointed to the sky in the backyard of the National Ibom Hall grounds, and the rest is history!

Starlink can be monitored with an app to identify obstructions or other issues. The local AV team used the Starlink Internet service, and the live streaming quality was quite clear. Bishop and Mrs. Helton used the Starlink dish to live stream their other annual conferences in Haiti and Liberia.

There has been an ongoing concern to ensure that our CME members throughout Africa have Internet access capability to participate in conferences, events, meetings, training sessions, and certainly mission efforts. Starlink’s satellite Internet service can help to deliver desired results!

Launching the Starlink satellite Internet service in Nigeria had a transformative impact on connectivity. The decision to fund and launch it at the Unity Conference and livestream all sessions shows a commitment of the CME Church to embrace technology for communication, engagement, and outreach purposes. It's an exciting step forward in bridging the digital divide and facilitating greater access to information and resources for communities in Nigeria. Indeed, Starlink has the potential to revolutionize Internet connectivity and enable our CME brothers and sisters in Africa with enhanced educational and evangelistic opportunities, and facilitate communication and information dissemination in areas previously lacking reliable Internet access.

It's a promising development that has the potential to bring about significant positive change.

Ongoing conversations are being held with Presiding Bishop Kenneth W. Carter of the Fourth Episcopal District, Bishop James B. Walker, and Bishop Kwame Lawson Adjei on using Starlink in their respective Regions beyond the United States. The General Department of Communication and Information Technology (CIT) will continue exploring ways to deliver Internet access to churches in Africa, the United States and the world using Starlink.

CIT is re-imagining its communication and information technology service and support delivery for the CME Church using the goals of our Digital Transformation and Equity Initiative to serve the present age, and to ensure that the CME Church can BE BOLD, FACE NOW, EMBRACE NEXT, AND SEE NEW using technology!

1 Peter 2:9-10 (NLT) states, “But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.” The role of a Minsters’ Spouse is a calling. It calls for spouses to be encouragers, supporters, comforters, prayer partners/warriors, teachers, and much more. Mainly, the role of a Ministers’ Spouse is a calling of service. It is a role that C. M. E. Spouses gladly and faithfully accept!

The 4th Sunday in April, is designated as C.M.E. Ministers' Spouses Day. This day is set aside to recognize and bring awareness to the Ministers’ Spouses, Widows, and Widowers Department and show appreciation to all spouses, widows, and widowers across the Connection. “Black Methodist Chaplains Retreat 2024” Submitted by Rev. Dr. Geraldine A. Daniels “Engaging the Challenges of Culture, Church and Vocation” was the theme of the Black Methodist Chaplains Retreat held January 11-12, 2024, at the Crowne Plaza Ravina Hotel in Dunwoody, Georgia. This retreat was especially exciting in that it was the first time black chaplains from all three African American Methodist denominations came together under one roof. The African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (AMEZ) and Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME) gathered to “Enhance relationships, embrace our history and empower our presence for bold and relevant service through sharing our experiences.”

These two days of collaboration, instruction, and fellowship began Thursday evening with over 70 chaplains in attendance from the various denominations, including the Clinical Pastoral Care students of the CME Church. An opening meditation was led by the AME Zion Chaplains. Our first presentation was given by Bishop Teresa E. Snorton, Endorser, Ecumenical and Program Development Officer of the CME Church, on “Navigating Spiritual Care Tasks: Priest, Prophet, Shepherd.” The session ended with the AME Zion Chaplains offering closing prayer. The chaplains recessed for an evening of self-care, fellowship and/or re-creation.

Friday morning devotion was led by the AME Chaplains. Our second presentation was given

by Dr. Vergel H. Lattimore III, Ph.D., Endorser AME Zion Chaplaincy Commission and President of Hood Theological Seminary, on “The Chaplain’s Role: When to Advocate Prophetically vs Pastorally?” Our third and final presentation was given by Rev. Dr. Valerie Chillis Sanders, DMin, LMFT, BCC, Clinical Chaplain, Atlanta VA Heathcare System, AME Endorsed Chaplain on “The 20

Healthy Chaplain: Fostering Work-Life Balance.” After each presentation, a time of discussion was provided with the presenter as well as between groups.

Friday’s group exercises provided space for Chaplains to gather according to similar ministry settings – such as hospital, hospice, VA, military, police and fire, workplace, campus chaplains, educators, pastors, and local clergy – where they could discuss questions concerning educational and spiritual needs and practices.

This was an exhilarating exercise as each group was given five minutes to report on their discussions and provide books or resources that they found helpful in the past year. The retreat ended with prayer, meditation and benediction by the CME Chaplains.

March is Women’s History Month. This month, I would like to salute all of our Women in the Ministry that serve in the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church! Your work does not go unnoticed. You are appreciated and you are making history!

Because of the work that you are doing as a Woman in the Ministry and in ministry in general, I would like to encourage you this month to take a little time out to celebrate you! After reading this article, grab a quiet moment, take a deep breath, and explore self-care ideas that you could do this month.

Here are just a few suggestions: 1.

Nurturing your soul: Ministry life can be emotionally and spiritually demanding.

Create a space to replenish your soul and allow God to pour into you and to renew your strength by having a self-care plan.

2.

Setting healthy boundaries: Self-care days empower us to set healthy boundaries. This helps strike a balance between ministry, family, and personal well-being. Having a daily self-care checklist also prevents burnout and nurtures healthier relationships.

3.

Physical Self Care: Care for your bodies through regular exercise, proper nutrition, and adequate sleep. Participate in activities that promote physical health and relaxation, such as walks in nature.

4.

Restorative Self Care: Carve out time for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation, whether through hobbies, or leisure activities. Allow yourself to make time for selfcare and rest without guilt.

Self-care is personal and unique to each individual. It’s essential to identify which types of self-care resonate most with you and make them a regular part of your life. This month celebrate yourself! You are making history and you deserve it. Salute to you!

Texas College is pleased to announce the appointment of Rev. Josef Sorrells as Visiting Lecturer.

In this role, Rev. Sorrells will oversee and conduct College Assembly, commonly referred to as Chapel, as well as provide oversight to Texas College's Campus Ministry. With his leadership, Texas College will further enhance both the spiritual involvement and spiritual environment on campus. Rev. Sorrells brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, expertise, and servant leadership to the Texas College campus.

Rev. Sorrells was licensed to preach in 2020, under the leadership of Rev. Trever Barnett of North Park CME Church in Dallas, Texas, and was ordained both rites of deacon and elder in 2022 by Senior Bishop Lawrence L. Reddick III at the Northwest Texas/Dallas-Fort Worth Annual Conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Currently, Rev. Sorrells serves as pastor for the Greater Miles Chapel CME Church in Tyler, Texas.

Rev. Sorrells received the Associate of Arts degree from Mountain View College in Dallas, Texas. He then successfully pursued the Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. Following his successful

baccalaureate pursuits, he enrolled in Howard University's School of Divinity in Washington D.C., where he earned the Master of Divinity degree.

Throughout his tenure as a student, Rev. Sorrells amassed a multitude of awards and accolades for his academic achievements. As an avid scholar dedicated to continuous learning, he has notable experience conducting research and collaborating on grants.

In addition to his ministerial duties, Rev. Sorrells continues to assist in countless projects and initiatives that address childhood hunger and atrisk youth, as well as social, cultural, and economic injustices that impact marginalized and Black communities in America. Rev. Sorrells has served in leadership roles for numerous community and civic organizations, which has garnered multiple awards and recognitions for his work.

Rev. Sorrells is revered as a motivational pastor with the gift of developing and uplifting intergenerational faith communities. Sorrells emphasizes that he, above all, remains devoutly committed to the work, mission, and advocacy of Christ. Texas College excitedly welcomes Rev. Josef Sorrells as Visiting Lecturer!

Steer Softball's (L-R) Alexa Gracia, Madalyne Martinez, Jennifer Gress, and Ashley Patterson led Texas College to victory over Grambling State University.

On Tuesday, March 12, Texas College Softball defeated Grambling State University, an NCAA Division I softball program, 8-1 in the first game of their two-game series. The Steers started off strong with a line drive from Jennifer Gress, which would bring home Ashley Patterson for their first run. Steers would capitalize on their momentum in the first, as Jennifer Gress would advance to home plate and score their second run on a fly ball.

The game remained tense at 2-0 until the top of the fourth inning, where Texas College found their stride. With the first pitch at the top of the fourth, Texas College's Jennifer Gress hammered the ball to left field, bouncing off the wall, which resulted in a double. The Steers would ultimately score six runs off of three singles and an error. Ashley Patterson found her way to home plate for the second time, alongside Sydney Palomo, Zoe Backstrom, Nyah Arredondo, Andrea Vasquez, and Gabby Thomas-Brice each scoring a run as well. With the score at 8-0, Grambling State would answer back with just one run in the bottom of the fourth. Ultimately, Texas College would finalize their victory over Grambling State in the bottom of the seventh.

The Steers had four notable standouts in their win over the Tigers. With seven strikeouts, Texas College's right-handed pitcher Madalyne Martinez earned the win, allowing just eight hits and one run over seven innings. Alexa Gracia led the Steers to victory with three runs batted in, while Jennifer Gress had two hits in four at bats, and Ashley Patterson scored twice.

Texas College's defeat of an NCAA Division I softball program is the first in over a decade, when Texas College defeated Grambling State University at home in 2013. Texas College Softball ultimately would split the two-game series with the Tigers, falling 2-1 in the second game.

Phillips CME Church Lays Cornerstone Plaque, Celebrates 158th Anniversary Submitted by Mattie D. Thomas, PhD

October 15, 2023, was a day of praise and celebration at Phillips CME Church. Members celebrated the laying of a cornerstone plaque at 10:30 a.m. and observed their 158th anniversary at 2:30 p.m. The theme for the day was Celebrating the Journey: Praising God for Our Rich Heritage and Pressing Forward to BOLD Possibilities. The scripture was Psalm 100.

Bishop Teresa Snorton, former Presiding Prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District and current Ecumenical Bishop and Development Officer, preached at the morning worship service. She used Psalm 100 to develop the first part of the theme, Praising God for Our Rich Heritage. Recounting the challenges that the church experienced while relocating to the Winchester Road site, she told congregants that they survived the ordeal because God was on their side.

"Know that you are worshiping God in a building built by God," she added.

The goodness of God was Bishop Snorton's resounding theme. She urged members to praise God for His grace and mercy and praise Him with exuberance, intelligence, and gratitude. Considering the last part of the theme, Pressing Forward to Bold Possibilities, she encouraged the congregation to press on. Motivated by Jeremiah 29:11, she exhorted, "Press on, 'For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'"

Bishop Snorton also led the Cornerstone-Laying Ceremony.

The new cornerstone is a brass plaque mounted inside a wall in the church vestibule. A time

capsule containing a list of church officers, a 2023 Church Directory, a King James version of the Bible, and a 2018 edition of the CME Church Book of Discipline was placed behind the plaque.

Among the other items in the capsule are a USB Drive containing pictures and videos, and bulletins of recent milestone celebrations. A copy of the Commemorative Journal of the church consecration service held on November 14, 2021, is also included.

Rev. Dr. Gregory Scott served as liturgist for the day.

He and Trustee Chairman Malcolm Thomas unveiled the plaque. Presiding Elder Ollie Hatchett (Retired) and designated trustees participated in the morning worship service, and all trustees were involved in the Cornerstone Ceremony. Members of District 17 Prince Hall Affiliated Lodge performed the Masonic Cornerstone Ritual.

Between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m., the Hospitality Committee served lunch. Darryl Burke, a local television reporter, interviewed church leaders and photographed historical images accumulated by the 158-year-old congregation for a feature story aired on WHNT-TV that evening and the next day.

Acolytes Kennedy Blanding and Christian Kirkham opened the 158th Anniversary Service by lighting the candles. The Anniversary Choir, directed by Amy Clark and accompanied by musicians Dr. David Peterson and Dr. Horace Rice, enhanced the service by singing moving songs of praise. Rev. Jacqueline Wilson read the scripture and Rev. Brian Hamlet prayed. Sunday School Superintendent O'Harold Williams led the Anniversary litany. Marion and Essie Graham honored the lives of Jalan Coleman, Glenda Draper, Marian Jeter, and Alfred Hereford with a moving memorial tribute.

Presiding Elder Janice Lewis of the Greater Huntsville District introduced Bishop Clarence Heath, Presiding Prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District, who preached a thought-provoking Church Anniversary sermon.

Using the title "A Good God in an Evil World," Bishop Heath began by citing multiple examples of evil including wars, poverty, and shootings that might cause one to question the presence of God. It is not Continued on next page April 2024 • The Christian Index

Submissions Continued from previous page God who commits evil deeds, he explained. Human beings commit them because they want to. Turning to Psalm 100, he explored God's mercy and truth. Despite our evil behavior, God keeps on giving to us, lifting us, and blessing us because He loves us. He often withholds the punishment we deserve because He loves us. "Truth," he said, "is difficult to identify in a hate-filled world, but the truth is that God sent Jesus-the best that He had-to save a sinful world."

Therefore, we ought to humble ourselves and praise God for His goodness. When we do that, true worship takes place.

Church history was presented through a video narrative produced by Padraic Major and Dr. Mattie Thomas.

It included not only early stories about the church but also accounts of such recent events as the Sesquicentennial Celebration in 2015, the Groundbreaking Ceremony in 2017, the dedication of a State Historical Marker and the Consecration of the new church facility in 2021, and the presentation of Phillips' first Strategic Plan in 2023. The theme for the day was truly appropriate. God is good! That is why Phillips fervently praises Him. Stewardess Board #1 coordinated the Anniversary Celebration. Sharon Owens of the Coordinating Board and Senior Pastor Rev. Dr. Gregory Scott made remarks.

Bates Chapel Hosts Grand Celebration!

Set in the heart of rural small-town Coldwater, Mississippi, thirty miles south of Memphis, Tennessee, is located one of our Great Zion’s best kept secrets, Bates Chapel CME Church, “A Little Church with a Big Heart!”

On December 17, 2023, I was privy to have attended a beautiful, stellar occasion that embodied a massive gathering of former members, friends, visitors, and observers. These persons had come together for a grand homecoming event with a three-fold celebration: the recognition of the church’s 125th Founder’s Day, unveiling of a State Historical Marker commemorating the establishment of the church, and the naming of the Clen D. & W. Jean Moore Fellowship Hall. Although one might think that the focus on so many of God’s bountiful blessings being shared in one setting would be a strain on many congregations, Pastor Dr. Roderick D. Lewis, Sr. and his congregation’s orchestration made the event seem effortless!

To begin, the 11:00 o’clock morning Worship Service, which highlighted the recognition of Bates’ 125th Founder’s Day, was preempted by the early arrival of persons being in attendance for the Sunday school hour, including Leading Lady Rosia Carter and the Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Clarence Buchanan. Having retired from the Seventh Episcopal District and returned home to the Fourth Episcopal District, Dr. Buchanan had since served as a former pastor at Bates. With warm welcomes in words, hugs, and kisses from the pastor and members, the service got started in a timely manner.

In his opening, Pastor Lewis and his angelic choir led the congregation in a very spirit-filled and Choir praiseworthy worshipping experience. This was followed by trustee Robert Moore’s heartfelt greetings and the church’s “Quasquicentennial” occasion, and Celebration Chair Dr. Jessie Edwards’ detailed Historical Overview of Bates Chapel CME Church. He not only gave the first site of the building whose foundation was laid in 1898, but also how the church came to its present site, 748 Pine Street, in 1942 under the pastoral leadership of Rev. J. B. Washington and its rebuilding in 1976 under the leadership of Rev. James Victor Murdock. Listing the families of members of Bates, he named Mrs. Mary Fleming as one of the oldest persons on record. He also pointed out the two Cornerstones; the first was laid in 1898 and the second was laid in 1984, with the latter reading: Bates Chapel C.M.E.; Erected and Remodeled 1976; Rev. J.V. Murdock-P.C. 1976; Eunice Caldwell-SEC.; Elder H.W. Jones-P.C. 1983; Trustees-Ira Booker, Sr., Emmitt Jones, Clen D. Moore, Willie Powers, Jesse Ross, Wyatt Todd, Richard Washington; Laid by Lodge 219; W.M. Stringer-Grand Lodge; H.M. ThompsonGrand Master; 1983 A. D. Most significant was the powerful sermon given by the Right Reverend Bishop Kenneth W. Carter, Presiding Prelate of the Fourth Episcopal District, who captivated the congregation with his “Have YOU Mr. Robert I. Submissions Continued from previous page God nothing is impossible.” However, for his argument he chose the passage Luke 1:34-56 to show that Bates Chapel’s endurance for 125 years was comparable to barren Elizabeth’s conceiving at an old age and the Virgin Mary’s Miraculous Conception! The shouting comes in verse 41 when Mary tells her Cousin Elizabeth her good news, “And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greetings of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.” Bishop Carter then called upon Missionary Christine Buchanan as Mary and Missionary Rosetta Edwards as Elizabeth whose dramatic performance enhanced his point!

Ceremony to Unveil the Historical Marker

Following the Benediction by Bishop Carter and singing, “Every Day Is a Day of Thanksgiving,” Pastor Lewis led the congregation outside to the unveiling of the Historical Marker with Dr. Jessie Edwards leading the people in the “Litany of Unveiling.” Mr. Robert Moore, having presented the Worship Service on Facebook, continued with the recording of the unveiling (https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=387369453853948/) and the remaining events. The inscription on the marker is printed as follows: "Bates Chapel C.M.E. Church Bates Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal (C.M.E.) Church was founded by formerly enslaved persons in 1898 and named in honor of Reynolds Bates, the first pastor. The congregation moved to this site in 1942 due to the construction of Arkabutla Dam. The current church was built in 1976 during the pastorate of Rev. James Victor Murdock. The denomination was organized in 1870 in Jackson, Tennessee, as the Colored M.E. Church. The name was changed to the Christian M.E. Church in 1954."

Whereas, Mr. Clen D. Moore and his wife, Mrs. W. Jean Moore, and their sons, Damon and Robert, were faithful members of the Bates Chapel CME Church for many years, and where Robert continues to serve and lead; and Whereas, During the years of their active membership, Mr. and Mrs. Moore both served in the lay leadership of the Bates Chapel CME Church and worked to ensure the ministries of the church and for the community were sufficiently sustained; and Whereas, Mr. Clen Moore, with the support of his wife, Mrs. W. Jean Moore, thought it appropriate to make the donation and give directions for the erection of a marquee (sign) bearing the name of Bates Chapel CME Church at the Pine Street property; and Whereas, When the Moore family relocated from Coldwater to Waterford, and from Bates Chapel to Anderson Chapel, they continued to support the ministries of Bates Chapel; and Whereas, Their love for the Bates Chapel Church has continued to be expressed in tangible and intangible ways to progress the work and ministry of the church.

Lewis, Sr., Pastor Then everyone was invited to partake of the delicious Fellowship Meal with Mrs. Moore and Special Guests seated at the Head Table. A unique gesture was a menu placed at each table setting where guests selected their meals and waiters and waitresses picked up the lists and served guests accordingly. Pastor Lewis and selected members oversaw the Head Table. I was in awe, along with many others, of the service given. After everyone was well into their meal, Dr. Jessie Edwards presented Mrs. Moore for remarks, wherein she thanked the church for the unexpected recognition and acknowledged everyone attending the affair on her behalf. When she asked all her students to stand with her for a group photo, over half of the attendees joined her. I know she felt she had made a difference in their lives.

In short, to say that Bates Chapel’s Founder’s Day was a Grand Occasion is an understatement; for it was a Spectacular Affair! Pastor Lewis welcomes guests.

Everything was well organized and executed in a timely manner, lasting from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The program was spiritual, informative, and educational! Also, the atmosphere was cordial; the soul food was delicious; and everyone was gifted with a beautiful commemorative mug! This was an occasion that I would not have missed, having been a recipient myself of the Moores’ benevolent giving. As a case in point, I came to live with Sister Jean and Brother-in-law Clen when I was a senior in high school. Treating me as the daughter they did not have, they supported me through graduation; got me enrolled in Lane College, providing for my every need; paid for a decent wedding; and still the giving goes on – not only for me, but also for many of their students needing help. I salute Bates Chapel Church, “A Little Church with a Big Heart,” for keeping its history alive and for giving honor to whom honor is due. May God’s richest blessing continue to be bestowed upon its Visionary Pastor, Dr. Roderick Lewis, Sr., and its Dedicated Members.

On Saturday, March 2, 2024, the South Louisiana EUTHU Committee held its Community Benefit Luncheon at the new Downtown Convention Center in Lafayette, LA. The theme: “Each One, Help One, (Through EUTHU) was addressed by the guest speaker, Attorney Mark Malveaux. Att. Malveaux is a native of Lafayette, Louisiana. He attended Northside High School and Southern University. The dynamic speaker emphasized that we must all help each other in order to be successful in life. He told the audience that it was his parents who instilled in him, to be successful you must work hard to achieve. His neighbors, who were educators, also helped him make the decision to be successful.

The most spiritual and entertaining program included: Soloists – First Lady Angela Evans (Cunningham C.M.E. Rayne, LA), Mrs. Thelma Woodvale (Williams Chapel C.M.E. – Moss Bluff, LA), Mrs. Nebu Nezey (I.H.M. Catholic Church – Lafayette, LA), Theresa Singleton (Trinity C.M.E Church – Lafayette, LA), Liturgical Dance – Jazzmin Evans (Cunningham C.M.E.).

The program consisted of: Bishop and Mrs. Kenneth Carter who introduced the speaker, scripture read by Elder Jason McLeod, and prayer by Host Pastor Christopher Nelson. Twenty-two (22) honorees from throughout local Ecumenical churches received plaques. The M.C. for the program was Mr. David Carney III, a scholarship recipient. The Welcome was given by Taylor and Jordan Edison. Response to the Welcome and to the honorees were given by Mrs. Mary Batts, Mrs. Linda Granger, Rev. Paul and Sylvia Cluse and Imani Savoy. During the serving of lunch, fashions were presented

by Dee’s Fashions. Closing remarks were given by Chairperson Mrs. Mathilda G. Martin and Bishop Kenneth Carter.

Honorees were presented by Rev. Rodney Geyen and Mrs. Mathilda G. Martin. This year’s honorees were: Deyolanda M. Sallier, Lisa Rochester, Naomi G. Beverly, Gwendolyn J. Rochester, Rev. Sylvia M. Cluse, Rev. W. Paul Cluse, Minister Joseph Breaux, Patricia Colbert Cormier, Keler Marie Mitchell, Mary Taylor-Batts, Hope Bias, Nebu Nezey, Anazia Andrus-Sam, Geraldine Broussard, Kathy Price, Kimberly McDonald Duhon, Dorothy Felix, Eula P. Porter St. Paul Celebrates 153rd Anniversary On Sunday, December 10, 2023, Porter St. Paul CME Church in Northport, Alabama, celebrated its One Hundred Fifty-third Church Anniversary.

Bishop Clarence Heath, Presiding Prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District of the CME Church, was the guest speaker. His subject was “Check Your Light Bulb,” based on the scripture: “Ye are the light of the world. A city set upon a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16.

Dr. Althea H. Foster served as worship leader. The Porter St. Paul Praise Singers rendered music for the service. The kitchen staff prepared and served a delicious meal with food for everyone in the beautifully decorated fellowship hall. This event was well attended by a very responsive audience.

Porter St. Paul Community Outreach On November 16, 2023, the Ministry to Men of Porter St. Paul under the leadership of Coordinator Brian Owens sponsored a clothes giveaway in which a couple of trailers of new and slightly used clothing were distributed to patrons of the Tuscaloosa Soup Bowl. The recipients were gratefully pleased for the opportunity to receive the clothing.

Porter St. Church Distributes Thanksgiving Lunches On November 11, 2023, the Trustees, Lay Council, and Kitchen Staff of Porter St. Paul CME Church, Northport, Alabama prepared and delivered over 250 Thanksgiving lunches to people in the Northport-Tuscaloosa Communities.

COMMUNITY PASTOR: BUILDING BRIDGES Submitted by Dr. Jamie Capers My intention in this article is to encourage and motivate some pastors about the reality of their ministerial appointment. Indeed, we pastors are not merely assigned to a congregation; we are assigned to pastor the community. Serving under the leadership of Senior Bishop L.L. Reddick III and of my father in the ministry, Bishop Kenneth W. Carter, as well as studying under the tutelage of the former dean of Phillips School of Theology, Bishop Marvin Frank Thomas, I received not only the charge but the necessary tools to enter my assigned church and community ready to be a strong leader who stands in the gap for those whose voices have been muffled and build relationships with those whose ideologies are contrary to mine.

My recent invitation to apply for Lead by Faith Initiative became a catalyst in my thinking about the role we as pastors have to play in our society. In 2024, the organization will launch a national leadership initiative: Leading by Faith in Times of Political Division. This special initiative is designed to support, train, mobilize, and prepare faith leaders across our geographic hubs to navigate the upcoming polarized election season. Each applicant for the initiative was requested to share his or her involvement and challenges with bridging the divide among the different communities and the impact made, and what differences this initiative made in the community and their perception of the role and responsibility in their mission. These in-depth questions caused me to reflect deeply and to re-examine my role as a spiritual leader in the community.

First, over the past decade, I have worked with a few organizations to bridge the gap in communities: NAACP, One Columbus, Columbus, GA; Tyler Together, Tyler, TX; Tyler in Common, Tyler, TX; and Working Together Jackson, Jackson, MS. As a partner with these organizations, I connected members of my congregations with people in the community to build business and personal relationships. During my time in Tyler, Texas, I was employed by Texas College as Campus Minister and Religion Instructor. This appointment afforded me the opportunity to include some college students in some of the difficult discussions for the community.

I recall one student, Rev. DeAreon Johnson, who spent a year as the Children and Youth Pastor at Miles Chapel CME-Tyler, saying to me, “Thank you 34

for including me. I am beginning to see there is more to pastoring a church than preaching in church on Sundays.” He went on to say, “You do not have to hate people because they think differently from you.

Why is it so hard for us to work together?” Rev. Johnson’s response affirmed Dr. Jamie Capers the need for reaching across the aisle in search of a better society for all. I believe it was God encouraging me to continue pressing forward in my pursuit of standing up for the downtrodden and sitting with those who are ideologically different.

Secondly, when I was challenged to share my rationale for how I could make a difference through the Lead by Faith Initiative, at a time in history when religion, especially Christianity, is heading further into darkness and hostility in a society that is becoming increasingly hostile and unjust to live in, my mind immediately went to the racial unrest and uprising and the January 6, 2022 unrests. Could these unfortunate events have been prevented if we the pastors had nurtured and preached the concept of building relational bridges and reaching out to people with whom we do not agree?

As I consider my potential involvement with Lead by Faith, as with the other organizations previously listed, it is my prayer, hope, and belief along with others that I will be able to build those important relationships and foster an atmosphere for achieving common ground.

It is imperative for leaders in each community to not only just speak up at the microphone but listen and speak with others at the table called ‘Together:’ Together We Can. Together We Must. Together We Will. At this vantage point, we will intentionally engage in the process of removing the masks and diving into intimate dialogue that draws us closer to those whose ideologies or thoughts appear foreign.

As pastors assigned to churches of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, we should all seek out and partner with local, state, and national organizations in an effort to build communities that recognize and believe in the humanity of all its citizens. Thus, the elected leaders are held accountable to implement laws and promote initiatives which will build up and empower the entire community. Preaching a sermon on Sunday is indeed a part of our call but that exercise should not end there. We cannot neglect the other and broader part or community which is essential in fostering a communal bond with others in spite of racial or religious differences.

Gilbert Memorial CME Jingle Jams Submitted by Kimberly Chenault Omicrion Epsilon Omega Chapter of Wichita Falls, Texas, held a pre-Christmas event, Jingle Jams, on December 16, 2023. Sister Andrea Williams, a member of Gilbert Memorial CME Church and also a member of Omicrion Epsilon Omega Chapter, sponsored two persons, a youth from Gilbert and her sister, to the evening of games, prizes, food, picture with Santa, and lots of fun. Along with Santa, the Grinch also made an appearance.

The Lovely Ladies of Omicron Epsilon Omega Chapter thank our Wichita Falls community and those from Dallas who came out to support our first Jingle Jam event. On February 9, 2024, the Tenth Episcopal District Nigeria Unity Annual Conference was privileged with the presence of dignitaries from the Akwa Ibom State, namely: Governor Umo Eno, Deputy Governor Akon Etim Eyakenyi, and Governor Eno’s wife, Mrs. Patience Umo Eno. Other persons from the governor’s cabinet reportedly were also present.

During the visit, Governor Eno spoke words of gratitude to the church, and offered blessings and congratulatory remarks to the congregation of about 5,000. In addition, he made an official announcement regarding one of his concerns as governor of the state. I am proud of them and the work they have been doing. I thank you for hosting this conference in Akwa Ibom State. It could have been anywhere and we celebrate you. “‘I thank God for the support you gave to me during my campaigns and election period,’ the governor added.

“He thanked the Christian community for their support during the election and pledged his determination to continue to run an accountable, transparent, and allinclusive government, adding that he will work harder to better the health and educational system in the State.”

“Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State […] disclosed plans to establish a Bulk Purchase Agency to checkmate the ever increasing food prices, regulate price of foodstuff, and keep it within the reach of its citizenry.

Joining the Great Cloud

Rev. Dr. Henry Quitman Dickerson “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Rev. Henry Quitman Dickerson was born July 12, 1949, in Mira, Louisiana, to Dorothy Larry. He and his sister, Eliza, were adopted

by Rev. Quitman Dickerson and Edna Rowe-Dickerson.

Rev. Dickerson and his sister spent their formative years in Douglasville, Texas, and were members of the Gum Springs CME Church. He graduated from Douglas High School and went on to continue his education at Texas College in Tyler, TX. During his early days in college, Rev. Dickerson was drafted by the United States Army. During his years of service, Rev. Dickerson was stationed at Ft. Polk, LA; Ft. Hood, TX; and in Heidelberg, Germany. After completing his commitment to active duty, Rev. Dickerson continued serving his country for several years in the United States Army Reserve. Rev. Dickerson later resumed his formal education and graduated from Texas College, earning his B.S. in Social Sciences. He went on to earn his Master of Theology degree and an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Mt. Hope Bible College, Houston, TX; and he also completed studies at the Houston Graduate School of Theology, Houston, TX, earning his M.A. in Christian Ministry.

On July 9, 1977, Rev. Henry Dickerson married Clara Oleta Hines. God blessed them, and from their union Henry Q. Dickerson II (deceased), Quinton Matthias Dickerson, and Christian DeForest Dickerson were born.

Rev. Dickerson and his gifted helpmate, Clara, served the CME Church faithfully at every charge he was assigned for 46 years. Rev. Dickerson believed in community involvement. In addition to the church, Rev. Dickerson served as president of the NAACP Longview Branch; an advisory member of Willand Incorporated, board member of Because I Care-Marrow and Tissue Typing for Minorities; and he was a Connecting Link with the East Texas Chapter of The Links Incorporated for 29 years. Rev. Dickerson also served as president of the Area Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance-Longview; the first Longview site instructor for continuing education for the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC-Atlanta, GA); board member for Longview Community Ministries; and a member of the Longview Interfaith Council.

Rev. Dickerson accepted his call to preach at the age of nine, as a member of his home church, Gum Springs CME. He preached his first sermon on July 20, 1958, at Mt. Zion CME Church, Dangerfield, TX. After his first sermon, he was affectionately known as the boy who preached while standing on a wooden box. As an ordained Elder in the CME Church, Rev. Dickerson provided pastoral leadership to congregations at Friendship CME Church, Lindale, TX; Malakoff Circuit (New Hope CME Church, Corinth CME Church, Brookin Chapel CME Church); Mt. Zion CME Church, Ben Wheeler, TX; Metropolitan CME Church, Houston, TX; Carter Temple CME Church, Galveston, TX; St. Mark CME Church, Longview, TX; St. James CME Church, Tyler, TX; and Mt. Zion CME Church, Kilgore, TX. As a Presiding Elder, he led the Longview-Marshal District-East Texas Region of the CME Church for eleven years, and he led the Tyler District-Central Texas Region of the CME Church for four years. Once Rev. Dickerson put his hands to the plow, he never looked back. Rev. Dickerson was firmly persuaded and lived according to the scripture I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Philippians 4:13). With his faith in God and this scripture as his motto, Rev. Dickerson committed his life to preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ for over 65 years and served the CME Church as pastor to God’s people for more than 56 years.

On November 20, 2023, shortly after sunrise, Presiding Elder Henry Quitman Dickerson transitioned from this earthly life to his heavenly home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Quitman Dickerson and Edna Rowe-Dickerson, his son, Henry Q. Dickerson II, his brother, Curtis Jones, and his sister, Eliza Anthony.

“One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts.”

Presiding Elder Dickerson is survived by his wife, Clara Hines Dickerson; his sons, Quinton M. Dickerson (April) and Christian D. Dickerson (Kirstyn); grandchildren, Q’mora Janae, Quinton Amari, Brayden Ridley, Chris DeForest, Easton Grey and Maddox Ryder; and sisters, Mamie B. Duncan, Mary Helen Taylor, and Stephanie Reed. He also has a host of nieces—including his namesake, Henrietta Anthony, nephews, godchildren, family, and friends.
