After a three-year hiatus due to the appearance and continuing presence of COVID-19, the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church has resumed our connectional meetings beginning with the 2023 Unity Summit, which commenced on Sunday, August 20, in the place of its beginning, New Orleans, Louisiana. Members of the Fourth Episcopal District warmly greeted each person upon their entry into the lobby of the host hotel, the Hyatt Regency Hotel on Loyola Street, and the Fourth Episcopal District offered a lavish welcome reception in the late evening for the pleasurable enjoyment of all who attended. Pictures from the event may be seen on the next page. The Ministers and Laymen's Council conducted the first official worship service of the 2023 Unity Summit. In the past, this event was held in the evening prior to the opening day; however, this year's event was changed to the middle of the opening day. Sis. Toya McQueen led the worship and the Connectional Music and Arts Ministry provided music that appropriately placed emphasis upon the presence and mercy of God, who has preserved us through the troubles of the past and brought us with great joy into the present. Rev. Dr. Earl Griffin of the Sixth Episcopal District based the sermon, "When God Clips Your Wings," on Isaiah 40:28-31; John 15:1-2; and Second Corinthians 4:7. He began with a story about his mother who raised chickens and often found it necessary to clip the wings of those birds that ventured beyond what his mother deemed were acceptable boundaries. The procedure involved raising one wing of the offending chicken and carefully clipping the ends of the feathers on that wing, avoiding the roots and thus the flow of blood to that wing. This rendered the bird unable to fly high and misbehave.
A military veteran, he related a comparable scenario from the life of General Patton who though he was making good progress to win World War II was approached by his superior, General Rev. Dr. Earl Griffin Bradley, who told him he was going to have to slow him down because General Eisenhower needed one of his units in support of another effort. Patton was infuriated and opposed the plan, but General Eisenhower, acting through Bradley, clipped Patton's wings by taking the troops anyway. We are in the vineyard of God, and we can do all things and act freely as long as we act within the will of God. Jesus said every branch that does not bear fruit is taken away. Here "taken away" means "lifted up." When a sheep's wool gets too heavy for it to perform effectively and bear more wool, the shepherd lifts up the wool and shears the sheep so it can bear more wool. Producing should be a source of blessing and not a curse. Jesus said he will bear all of our heavy burdens and give us rest. Some of us are trying to be all that we can be in the church and are weighing ourselves down with so many ministries. Jesus sees our burdens are getting heavy and says, "I'm not going to get rid of you, but I'm going to clip you." Likewise, Jesus also prunes us so that we may better love one another and the world will know that we are his disciples. We are often in situations where, Continued on next page
