A Letter From the Editor

It's crazy to think that this magazine, this company, has hit the two year mark. I was 17 when I started ORENDA MEDIA, now HAZZE MEDIA (fun fact, Hazze is my name backward!). Throughout this journey, I have met some of the coolest people and made some connections that will last throughout my life Being able to bring together a community is one of the most rewarding feelings when it comes to working on HAZZE. I also want to say a HUGE shoutout to everyone who has been contributing to HAZZE MEDIA. None of this would have been possible without y 'all. And also a shoutout to Orchee, Camila, and Mohja who are always helping me out, y 'all have a special place in my heart and I am eternally grateful to you guys. JAWNY Interview by: Camila C C:“Thankyousomuchfortalkingwithme;sogoaheadandintroduceyourself” J:“MynameisJawnyIamanartistfromLosAngeles,California” C:“You’vedefinitelyhadasuperbusyyearsofar Whatwastheprocessofworking onyoursingle‘TakeItBack’withyouridol,Beck” J:“Ohman!TheprocesswasinNovemberoflastyear,2021Weweresupposedtogetin thestudioandworkattheendofNovember,buthewasonatourAndthenIwasona tour,andIdontthinkourteamscouldlineupormakeanythingwork,andthenusually fromlikedecembertolikeJanuary15ththemusicindustryandeveryoneinitincluding, creators,allkindofgooffofthemapandthat'swhenMariahCareykindoftakesover and“AllIwantforChristmas”justbecomesthebiggestsongintheworld Andthen whenFebruarycamebackaroundeveryonewasgettingbacktoworkandgettingback inthestudioanddoingthings,weweretryingtolinkupagain,butthenagainhegot bookedforsomeshows,andIgotbookedtodotheFrenchMusicAwards,soitbecame thisthingwhereeverytimeourteamsweregonnatrytogetustoworkneitheroneofus wasaround,onceIgotoffstageattheFrenchmusicawardsIthinkIwasjustridingthe littlehigh,havingagoodrunner’shighfromitallbecausethatwaskindofcrazy Ijust shothimatextfromParisIwasjustlike‘hey,Iknowwekeeptryingtogetinthestudio andmakesomethingnew,butIactuallyhavethissongthatIhavebeentouringaround theworldforthelastyear;it’sgotacrazyreception,andit’salmosttothepointwhereI feellikeIneedtokindofgiveitanotherlittlepushandanotherlittleextralove,andre injectitintotheworldonemoretime AndIfeellikeitmighthaveslippedthroughthe cracks’AndbythetimeIwokeupinthemorninghewasalreadytextingmeback,being like,‘letsdoit Ilikethissong,sendmeallthestuff’,andImean,fromtheretherestis historyIgottoworkwithmyidol;wemadeasongthatIreallydigIloveallthestuffhe addedtoit,andhegottosingonthechorusandsingontheprechorusWeaddednew guitars,newproductionelements,anditwasjustareallycoolthing AndIevenended upgettingtogoontourwithhimafterthatacrossEurope,anditwasawild,crazy,full circlelifemoment.Andlikeyousaidit'sbeenawhirlwindofayearsofar,it'sbeenalittle crazy,butI'mholdingon,andI'mreadytoseewherethisrollercoastergoes.” C:“HowwasgoingontourwithBeckand howhasanyofyourpreviousexperiences preparedyouforyourupcomingtourwith OliverTreeWhatareyouanticipatingtobe different,andwhatareyouwantingto changefromyourlastexperienceforthis tour?” J:“OhtotallyThetourwithBeckwasawesome ShowsareamazingThereisn'tmuchtosay otherthanthat Iwasonstageopeningupfor someoneIreallylookupto,andthatjustfeels amazingandawesomeAsfaraswhat'sgoing tobedifferentaboutthisnexttour,Idon’t reallyknowIfeellikeIhavekindofgivenmy allattheshowsIfeellikeifyouwould’ve maybeaskedmethatquestionayearanda halfortwoyearsago,I’dhavealotmoreofnot critiques,butalotmoreadventurousthoughts ofwhereI’dgetmyset,andhowI’dliketogetit tosoundAsofrightnow,I’mfeelingpretty goodIthinkI’mgonnagoontheOlivettree tourdoingthesamethingI’vebeendoingand justkindofkeepthistrainchuggingalong,and Oliverisagoodbuddyofminesoit'sgonnabe agoodtimeWe’regonnagoplaysomeshows acrosstheUnitedStatesandit’llbeaswell grandoldtime!” C:“Howdoesyournewsingle‘Strawberry Chainsaw’differfromanythingyou’veever releasedinthepast?”

J:“Idon’tthinkanythingnecessarilyinspiredit Asfarasthegenre, right,Idon’tthinkIwaslike,‘ohman,Iaminspiredtomakemad musicnow’ LikeIsaidwiththatlastquestion,youknow,froma coupleofquestionsago,sometimesyouwriteandarelike,‘yeahI want to make upbeat fire little bops, that’s really carefree and freeform;youdon’thavetothinksuperhard,butImahuman,right? And life is a crazy, vicious cycle of love and heartbreak and disappointment,andtherearehighsandtherearelowsandthere arepeaksandtherearevalleys AndI’mahumanattheendofthe daythatmakesmusicandartaspretentiousasitsounds,andIthink thereweretimesinmylifelikethehumanexperienceforthelast couple of years where things got really not super summery and brightoutside Likeitdidn’tfeelthatwaytomewithmyperception ofwhatwasgoingonwithmylifeandcertainevents Andbecause I’manartist,andbecauseImakemusicandthat’sthethingIdo everyday,Ithinksomegothosesituationssomeofthosememories or some of those things that were bothering me or something probablywentintotheartandthesongsthatcameouthappenedto makethatproject;Ilikeditandthat’skindoftheexplanationwhy there are some really serious songs and why there are some emotionalorchestralsongsandmoments Butyeah,inshort,the human experience can be pretty wild sometimes It's awesome Sometimesitcanbesad IthinkmymusicreflectsthatandhowI’m feeling MymusicislikeamoodringthatIhaveonmyfinger,and youkindofhearhowIgothroughemotionsinlivetime”

C:“Let’skindofjumpbackintimealittlebit;whatgaveyouthe couragetoleavenursingschoolandtocontinuepursuingmusic? Whatadvicedoyouwanttogiveyourfanswhomaybestruggling withstartingfreshagaininregardstoapassion?”

J:”Okay,sobeforeIanswerthat,Ineedtobeclear,soI’mnotafibber DidIdropoutofnursingschooltechnicallyonpaper?DidIevereven makeittothenursingprogramortakeasinglenursingclass?No I droppedoutduringtheremedialclasses Idroppedoutduringthe mathandscience,andthecreditsyouneedtogetbeforeyouevenget to the nursing program I didn’t make it 6 months into my first semesteratallIjustkeptmakingbeatsintheparkinglot,pretending likeIwasgoingtoclass ButanyadviceI'dgiveanyone,whetherit's collegeorlifeoranything,isjustdowhatyoulovewhileyoucan,you know?

C:”Yourmusicissomultifacetedinregardstogenre,sohowdo youstaytruetoyoursoundwhileworkingwithsuchavarietyof musictypes?”

It’skindofwhatItoldmyself,evenwhenIwasworkingadayjobor reallystrugglingtomakeeverythingwork Mydad&Iwouldbutt headsalotwhenwe’dbeonthephoneIt'slike,Idon’twanttobe50 or65yearsold,justneversaythatIdidtryatleast,youknowwhatI mean?I’drathertrythanfailandthengodosomethingIdon’tloveto paythebillsthanbeoneofthoseoldguysthatisjustbitterthathe neveratleasttriedtodothethingthatheloved,andthisdoesn’teven justapplytomusic Thisislike‘gobeaf*******astronaut’orfor whateverreason,yourdreamistobeanaccountant,whichIthinkis themostboringjobintheworld,butifforsomereasonthat’syour dream,likegof******doitortrytodoit,orelseyou’regoingtobe oneofthosepeoplethat’sjustmiserableanddidn’teverdoanything thatyoureallywantedtodoandjustlivedlifeforotherpeople,and doeverythingyoucantomakeitwork YouknowItrytodomusic butmygodthere’stimeswhereIhadtoworkallthesecrazyoddend jobswhereIwouldwakeupat5inthemorningandthenworka wholeshift,andthengointomystudioandmakemusicandthendo itallagainthenextdayforlikesixdaysstraight,everyweekfor monthsonendlike it’snotfunsometimes It’snotalwaysgoingto feellikeyourlivingthefreakingdream,butmanonedayyou’re goingtolookbackonthoseyearsthough,likeevenhowIdonow, andI’mlikemanthosearesomeofthebesttimesofmylife Even whenmybackwasupagainstthewallandeverythingwascrazy andstressful Ikindofloveitweirdly Idon’tknow Imnotagood ‘TedTalk’guy Justfollowwhateveryouwanttodo;doittothe fullest,livelifewithnoregretsGodbless;thereyougo"

J:“Ithinkmytruesoundisshapingwhatevergetsmeexcitedinmy studioorinthatroomthatday It’snotsomuchashowIcanfitmy personalityperseintoagenreorsong;ifI’malreadychasingthat ideaorwritingthatideatobeginwith,nomatterwhatthegenreis, it'sgonnasound

C:“Yourupcomingmusicissaidtobemuchmoreemotionally provoking;whatinspiredyoutobecomemorevulnerablewith your listeners? How has this approach changed your writing process?”

C:“Iheardyoubasealotofyourartstrictlyonintuitionwithout lookingtoodeepintohowitmightplayout Youprettymuchjust gobythefirstthoughtyouhave;that’showyougointoitHowhas thatgivenyoumorelibertyinyourpassion?“
