Open up your calendars because it takes serious planning to partake in all the activities that overflow our cup during the summer season. Personally, I would like to thank Mother Nature for the longer days during this season for playing and participating in the local fun. It’s like we gained a half day!

Have you ever heard anyone remark, “I’m so bored, there is nothing to do around here?” If you’re one of these people, you may have your head buried in the sand. This could, however mean you are at a beach, whether it be the ocean, river, or a local lake — so, let’s call that a start. I’m taking a deep breath now to name many other options. Here goes: music festivals; music at the breweries, wineries and in the local parks; classic car shows; museums; outdoor movies; county fairs and rodeos; vintage and antique markets; arts and craft shows; bicycling and running events; camping; fishing; rafting; hiking; swimming; summer fun programs for the kiddos; gardens for planting; orchards for picking; fruit stands and farmers’ markets for buying any fruit or vegetable you can imagine on your plate; and food festivals. I’m absolutely sure I forgot something but I could only focus on coming up for air after that long list of wonderful, tasty, gorgeous activities. This is why we welcome the winter’s rest — we all play hard during the summer months.

Speaking of playing hard, this edition of work is done and it’s time to kick back and enjoy it. The editor and publisher are going to grab a refreshing seasonal beverage, hang low on a hammock and feast our eyes on the latest edition of what the Umpqua Valley has to offer. We suggest you do the same. In fact, we insist!

B

eing well dressed is a pleasure; something about a nice fitting suit makes us feel confident. Sure, some may complain a little bit about feeling awkward, but inside you feel good, because you know you look it. Perhaps you are attending a formal event such as a wedding, prom or something where you want to look just perfect. For those of us who have had such occasions, you would have undoubtedly met Ramon Comellas of The Tuxedo Warehouse.

One would guess you already know of the Tuxedo Warehouse, a business that has earned many accolades and industry awards for its innovation, quality and superior apparel. There are many layers to the success of this family-owned business, however, Ramon Comellas is the true gem behind this outstanding success story.

Born in Berga, Spain during the Spanish civil war, Ramon Comellas was one of three children. Growing up in the pre-World War II era, poverty was the norm and jobs were very scarce. Ramon explains that he had a difficult time in school and therefore asked his parents if he could get a job. Naturally, both parents took little time giving their answer, and both responded with a resounding ‘no.’ “I didn’t like school at all,” says Ramon. “There were always other things I wanted to do and school wasn’t one of them.

He continued to ask his parents, until finally his father gave in on one condition — that he continued to go to

8

school and help with his father’s business. Ramon recalls, “I was happy to be able to go to work, but I still had to go to school too, which I hated, and then I had to work for my father as well!” He recounts going with his father, to a tailor in his small town and asking him for a job. Ramon recalls the tailor telling him that he had to work for free until he thought he was worth enough to him to get paid.

“I ended up working for free for four years before getting paid,” says Ramon. “Earning a paying job at such a turbulent time in Spain was quite an accomplishment, and when I began to work, I believed that although I was only ten, I had become a man.”

Ramon ended up working and earning an apprenticeship over the course of four years without pay. “Today, most people can’t comprehend the idea of working for nothing, but most places offering an apprenticeship don’t pay, especially back then. It is considered education, and to receive it is very valuable,” says Ramon. “Although I didn’t earn any money, my boss, the owner, would give me certain ‘things’ if I could learn a step.” Ramon recalls admiring his mentor’s watch one day. “My mentor noticing me staring at his beautiful watch, asked me, ‘Do like this watch?’” Ramon quickly answered, “Yes very much. I would very much like to have a watch like that someday.” His mentor responded, “If you can make me six hundred pairs of shoulder pads, I will get you a watch like this.”

“Well of course, I was so excited,” Ramon says with glee.

I could only think about the watch and all I wanted to do was to get started. Ramon recalls that the first several hundred pair of shoulder pads went very quickly, but the last two hundred or so, took forever. “I eventually finished all twelve hundred shoulder pads and my mentor gave me the watch.” Until this very day, Ramon says he hates having to make shoulder pads.

It was nearly 60 years ago when he made the journey from Spain to Rio de Janeiro. “So many memories from that time,” he says. “My life was just beginning to unfold. I was so excited.” Ramon met his wife Rosa in Brazil and they have been by each other’s side ever since. The two of them moved from Brazil in 1964 to the United States. Landing in Los Angeles, not knowing or being able to understand any English, didn’t stop Ramon. He quickly found a job and went to work. He recalls trying to get a job washing clothes at a nearby hotel. “I didn’t get the job,” he says.

“Here I am in America, a trained professional tailor and I can’t even get a job washing clothes!” he says laughing.

“But eventually I was able to find work with a tailor in the area and went back to work doing what I knew.”

Soon Ramon opened up his own shop in the Los Angeles area and in 1969 he found himself running his own business making custom suits and doing alterations. “I never had any question as to what I was going to do for a living because I was a classically trained tailor,” says Ramon. He soon made a name for himself and became quite a name in the world of custom suits and alterations. “I met many people over the years, even famous people, but that didn’t matter to me. I just enjoyed practicing my trade and doing the very best I could for my clients.”

Enjoying success in Orange County, Ramon and his wife Rosa later sought change. They began looking into an area where they could develop a bigger market that might be less competitive and more affordable to start up. “Somehow we ended up in Roseburg,” says Ramon. “We moved into the area to farm actually, but we soon realized that there was an opportunity here doing what we know and love.” In 1985 the couple decided to open the Tuxedo Warehouse. “We looked at the number of weddings and schools in the area and realized there was a big enough market here to go after,” he states.

Now, some 30-plus years later it is one of the most recognized, successful businesses in Douglas County. “We have enjoyed being an integral part in how suits are fitted and altered for quick turn-around for special occasions, not only here in Douglas County as a local business, but throughout the entire West Coast and many points beyond, as a wholesale distributor.” They have developed a tremendous ability in meeting all kinds of special occasion deadlines throughout the vast multi-state accounts they maintain.

Robert and Rosana, Ramon and Rosa’s two grown children both help with the day-to-day, management of The Tuxedo Warehouse. “It truly is a family business,” says Rosana. “My mom and dad have been able to give us a great life. They love us deeply and I’m so glad they made us a part of the business.”

“Robert is normally who you see first when you come in the store,” says Ramon. “He and Rosana have been the perfect addition to our lives, and as a family business, I couldn’t imagine what it would be without them.”

The Tuxedo Warehouse is not only noted in the Roseburg area, but is has become a leader in its industry. In 2008, Ramon and The Tuxedo Warehouse received the International Formalwear Association’s ‘Black Tie Award’ which is recognition of a lifetime contribution to the industry.

It is the highest honor given of its kind, and there is little wonder that Ramon has received it.

Grass-fed beef is fast gaining popularity with its health benefits, integrity in farmraising, and humane practices, reforming even the most devout vegetarians. Heather Barklow, herd manager for Seven Springs Ranch located in the picturesque foothills of Glide, is one such convert.

Seven Spring Ranch was established in 1969 by the Young family. The 444-acre ranch was once part of the historic W.E. Chapman land donation claim of 1886; the original pioneer house serving as a stagecoach stop for travelers heading east. In 1999, part of their property was converted into an idyllic event center for weddings and other private events. The ranch also serves as a place for horse shows and has been host to the Western States Regional Championship for sheep herding dogs.

Most significantly though, Stan and Linda Young, along with Heather, raise premium quality grass-fed beef which is available direct to the consumer from Seven Springs Ranch.

In her younger years, Heather met the Youngs through their children while raising 4-H market steer together. Since then, her love for the family and working on their ranch evolved into her role managing their 40-plus head of cattle. Her natural passion for animals and the rural lifestyle has also found her as manager of the Umpqua Valley Farmers Market, a member of the Humane Society’s Pacific Northwest Agricultural Advisory Board, and owner-operator of HB Horsemanship. On meeting Heather, it’s apparent that her sunny disposition, work ethic, and sincere appreciation for life are what make her a success in her

endeavors. What is also obvious when you visit the ranch is how happy the cows are in their natural environment and under her care.

“We use organic principles and focus on sustainability,” says Heather. “The hay is sourced on property, the blackberries are removed with machinery and not poison, and the water is sourced from the springs on site.”

Jo Robinson of Eatwild, explains the grass-fed difference: “They are raised from birth to market on family ranches. Cows, lambs,

goats, and bison graze high-quality pasture during the growing season and then stored grasses (hay or grass silage) during the winter months or drought conditions. The animals live such stress-free lives that they are rarely sick and do not need to be treated with pharmaceutical drugs. As in nature, their rate of growth is determined by their health and the quality of forage, not hormonal implants and growth promoting additives. Their products are healthy, wholesome, and natural in every sense of the word.”

Heather says, “I used to be vegetarian for ethical reasons. Now with a closer relationship with the animals, knowing how they are raised, and realizing

the nutritional benefits, I’ve chosen to eat beef.” She advises that grass-fed beef is rich in omega-3 fatty acids that are essential to the human body. Additionally, when compared to feedlot cows, beef from grass-fed cows contains 3-5 times more CLA or conjugated linoleic acid, beneficial in fighting cancer, cardiovascular disease and improving immunity. Their systems are also free of GMO grain and soy – feed which is unnatural for cattle, but is heavily subsidized by the government.

Because of organic and sustainable practices employed by Seven Springs and the stress-free environment in which the cows are raised, it’s no wonder why the beef is richer in flavor and

more nutrient-dense in contrast to grain-fed, selling out within months of being offered on the market.

With integrity in their farming practices and direct connection to their customers, Seven Springs requires no involvement with the USDA. Linda Young states, “In Oregon, the regulations allow for beef to be sold directly from the farm to the customer at slaughter time, but not afterward.

That is why, for all practical intents, the owner of the beef is named as such from the time the customer places their deposit. The ranch carries forward, based on the ID of the animal, in the name of the customer from that point.”

The beef is harvested on site in the fall, with the best heifers being held back for the next season. Slaughter is humane and non-stressful for the animal. Heather says that some customers like to attend the slaughter of their animal which delivers a sense of appreciation for the meat they’re purchasing. She considers being able to eat the meat of these animals a privilege that shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Typically, the hang weight of the whole animals falls between 580 to 620 pounds (this includes internal organs, hide, head and feet), with about a 25-30 percent loss after

processing. Seven Springs sends the harvested animals to local processors such as Oakland Lockers or Crystal Creek Meats on behalf of the buyer, where the meat is custom cut and packaged for the table. Animals are sold as whole or half at $3 per pound based on hang weight. After purchase, harvest, processing and packaging, this premium grass-fed beef averages about $5 per pound.

As you follow it, the valley unfolds in front of you, revealing the region, the wineries, the wine and the people who are the pioneers forging this trail. This valley of one hundred valleys is home to twenty-eight wineries, all with their own unique story and place in the history of the oldest, winemaking region in Oregon.

The winery tasting room is your introduction to the wines and your opportunity to learn from the source. In the Umpqua it is still possible to make a connection with the winemaker. Like the wineries that produce them, each varietal has its own characteristics and each wine its own style. The basics of wine tasting begin with white to red and dry to sweet. Beginning your flight in the south end of the valley, traveling to the north and from east to west you will find all of these choices from Albarino to Zinfandel.

Varietals originating from the Rioja to the Loire. The award winning wines range from the “cool climate” Pinot Noir in Elkton, to the bolder Tempranillo from the vineyards in the valley and the “Old World” wines made in the “New World” style from the pioneering wineries continuing the legacy.

“Anxiety blocks perception” says Scott Kelley, owner and winemaker of the Paul O’Brien Winery in Roseburg. He continues on to encourage people to “relax, it’s just wine.” His philosophy is that wine is the conduit that brings people together. As he pours the wine for tasting, he will also pour out his heart to people who want to learn.

Steps to anxiety-free wine tasting:

1. Have a plan. When setting out on your wine tasting tour, choose wineries within regional proximity and limit to about three locations.

2. Be sure to have a designated driver.

3. Be aware that everything that you eat and drink prior to your wine tasting session is going to affect your taste buds.

4. Be selective. You don’t have to taste everything, and if you don’t like it, don’t be afraid to leave your sample unfinished.

5. If you find that your flavors are getting muddied, don’ be afraid to ask for a new glass.

From the warming of our skin, to illuminating a brand new day, the sun is our true companion. In fact, the human body, nor any other living organism, can survive without this precious life source. Consider for a moment, that not only is the sun essential for all life, it is also available for harvest, remarkably with hardly any negative impact.

David Longthorne has been harvesting, or ‘collecting’ the benefits of the sun and turning it into an economical alternative to its coal burning cousin. Best of all, it has virtually no impact on the overall well-being of the environment. Solar power obviously isn’t a new concept, but the technology and the introduction of new government programs that encourage the individual to utilize solar energy, are. Longthorne has been studying and analyzing the benefits of the new solar-tech world for over six years. His knowledge of this technology is unsurpassed and his

company, Newcastle Solar, is at the forefront of many solar installations throughout Oregon.

Here is a simplistic way of quickly explaining a solar panel and how it creates energy: A solar panel works by allowing particles of light to knock electrons free from atoms, generating a flow of electricity. Solar panels are comprised of many smaller units called photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight into electricity. Many cells are linked together, making up a solar panel. To work, photovoltaic cells need to establish an electric field. Much like a magnetic field, which occurs due to opposing poles,

an electric field occurs when opposite charges are separated. Metal conductive plates collect the electrons and transfer them to wires, at which point, the electrons can flow like any other source of electricity or usable power.

Longthorne weighs every installation of a solar project against the size of the house. That is, how much sun the house is capable of receiving determines how much energy the solar panels can generate in an average day. “There isn’t any reason to put in a system that costs a lot more than it can produce,” says Longthorne.

He goes on further to explain, that because of the way systems are designed today, a person doesn’t need to throw money away to try and solve their power needs. In fact the systems available today are as little as three times less in cost as they were just five years ago, and are capable of producing more power.

The use of solar power is much more than just a fad — it is among the largest emerging trends on this polluted planet. More people are seriously looking and converting from the normal grid dependence they have. Although Longthorne doesn’t suggest

going off-grid, but rather using the sun to fulfill as much of your needs through the most energy dependent times and then allow electricity to take a role in the least used times.

Longthorne has built a reputation as a trusted source of information regarding solar and the benefits of saving money harnessing the sun. “Not only is it very affordable,” Longthorne says, “with the new government incentives in place, it’s genuinely hard to overlook.”

Newcastle Solar has many projects throughout the local area as well as the state. Longthorne says that the new evolution of solar generation is among the fastest growing alternatives when compared to other types of fuel. “You don’t have to cut firewood every year to stay warm in the winter time,” states Longthorne. “It is the safest way to produce electricity and warmth. I urge anyone who is looking to reduce their overall cost associated in running a household to consider this clean alternative.”

TURNING INCHES INTO GALLONS Rainwater collecting and storing is easy—and it can help keep your garden growing well into the heat of summer.

T

he Umpqua Valley is lush and green, and that has everything to do with two things: the Umpqua River and the climate of our region, specifically the amount of rainfall we receive every year.

With approximately 34 inches of annual rainfall in the Roseburg, Oregon, area, it’s no wonder we can boast fertile lands that host an ever-thriving grape growing industry and tasty produce, such as blueberries, cherries, pears and hazelnuts.

But what does that 34 inches mean for you (besides fantastic wines, farm fresh produce and a front closet full of rain gear)? Before I answer that question for you, let’s take a journey in your own backyard during a typical rainy day.

A Drip’s Trip This journey follows a raindrop and, in the case of your own backyard, it is a short but impactful one. I’ll spare you the scientific jargon, but it basically goes like this: A raindrop falls from the sky and lands somewhere on your property.

It might fall on your grass, your deck or your roof, but eventually that raindrop hits a surface rolls downhill, seeking out the lowest-lying spot.

This low spot could be your lawn, where the raindrop will be taken up by plants or infiltrated down into the soil. If that raindrop ends up watering the flowers in your garden or the vegetables in your raised bed, then…. success! That means that much less water from your tap has to be used to irrigate your lawn, flowers and vegetables.

But let’s say that raindrop hits an impervious surface, like your roof. It’s likely routed through your gutters, down a downspout, through a storm pipe beneath your lawn and out to the street, never to been seen by you again.

There are, however, underutilized sustainable alternatives to managing the rain that falls on your property. One of those ways that can directly benefit your garden is an approach called rainwater harvesting. With the right tools and knowledge, rainwater harvesting is fairly easy. The water can then be utilized for irrigating your garden so that you can grow tasty produce and beautify your landscape without feeling the pain of a high water bill.

Collecting Raindrops Harvesting rainwater is basically capturing and storing rainwater for later use. In Oregon, where it is only legal to collect rainwater that hasn’t yet hit the ground, harvesting rainwater is most easily done by redirecting the rain that hits the roof of your house, shed or barn into storage containers, often referred to as rain barrels (for smaller storage sys-

tems) or cisterns (for larger-scale storage systems).

This is an ideal practice in Oregon due to our seasonal rainfall patterns. Because it rains bucket loads in the winter, the best time to collect the rain is during the wet season when we receive our annual 34 inches of precipitation. When the dry summer season arrives—and it’s gorgeous outside—there’s gallons of stockpiled water, allowing you to be outside working on your landscape and making it the functional, beautiful, outdoor living space that you have always dreamed of.

So how do you do it? This is where you want to get creative while making sure you give your rain harvesting system the deserved time and thought so that it functions well and looks good. Rainwater kits can be purchased or built from scratch, but either way you want to make sure your system has the important pieces that make it work.

Putting It Together The first and most important step is to choose the best location for your rain barrel. You want to pick a spot next to your downspout(s) but close enough to the plants in your yard. Next, you have to divert the rainwater from your roof to the rain barrel(s), which will require you to cut your downspout and connect it to your barrel either directly or with an extension.

Another thing to consider is whether to include what’s called a first flush diverter (this may or may not come standard with a rain barrel kit). This diverter allows the first part of a rainstorm to be diverted away from your rain barrels, which will keep any pollutants, debris and bugs that settle on your roof or in your gutters from getting into your rain barrel. Now, you (or your pets for that matter) aren’t going to be drinking your rainwater, but you do want to keep it fairly clean while you store it so that you aren’t creating nasty breeding grounds for mosquitoes or waterborne diseases. Make sure to also screen your barrel for these same reasons and to keep small kiddos from taking a dunk in the water (safety first!).

Last but not least, you need to install an overflow. When your rain barrel(s) fills up, the excess water must have an escape route. Most rain barrels only hold 40 to 70 gallons, which in Oregon is not difficult to fill up even during one storm event.

To put this into perspective, a 1,000-square-foot roof has approximately 300 to 400 gallons of water run off of it during a 0.5-inch rain event. Assuming you are only capturing runoff from half of your roof (500 square feet), that is enough rain in one storm event to fill up two to three 70-gallon rain barrels. The take home message: If you want a lot of storage, you are going to have to have a multi-barrel set up — but in any event, you will need an overflow method.

One Drop at a Time So there you have it! This was a quick-and-dirty description of rainwater harvesting, but many resources are out there locally and online for you to draw inspiration. As with any landscape project, be sure to plan, design wisely, plant natives and enjoy the sunshine!

Cam Campman, creative director at Anvil Northwest in Roseburg, states that one of the first questions a business owner needs to ask themselves is, “Who do I want to be vibing to?” With the world getting smaller and noisier, it is even more important that we differentiate ourselves with our brand in order to be recognized by our most likely customers. “You can’t get by with just being good — you need a hook.” Campman says that the best way you can accomplish that is by “knowing your own business, knowing who you are, being able to be intertwined with your community and seamlessly communicating your craft.”

Business owners often also make the mistake of taking on their own writing.

From signage to technical literature, the written word has the power to elevate

or humiliate. I’ve seen restaurant signs that boast ‘homade cooking’ and ad copy that attempts to tout all the virtues of a product in twenty times the number of words necessary.

A few children play on the beach by the parking lot, but most are with the adults trying their hand at crabbing, throwing the traps out as far as they can and leaning over to watch them drift down through the murky green water.

“We come here every summer,” a woman from California says. “It’s our favorite place on the coast.”

Sitting next to her is a family from Illinois, and next to them is a man who just moved to town. They are a few of the thousands of people who visit the old Coast Guard pier in Winchester Bay every year, the place known locally as the Crab Dock.

“I tell our visitors that they can go crabbing here on our private dock, or on the dock in town, or on the Crab Dock, but everyone goes to the Crab Dock,” the receptionist at the Winchester Bay RV Resort says.

Reaching out nearly 900 feet into the Umpqua River, the Crab Dock is hard to miss. It’s the longest dock in the bay, a landmark along the road that leads out to the beaches. Local websites, visitor centers and brochures

Preserving Maritime History Few people walk out onto the Crab Dock without dropping money into the local economy. They buy bait and crabbing gear, campsites and firewood for boiling the day’s catch, groceries in town and souvenirs that celebrate the iconic Dungeness crab. But the dock is more than a source of revenue for Winchester Bay. It’s a reminder of the community’s maritime history.

Originally built in 1939 as the Umpqua River Lifeboat Station, it allowed the Coast Guard to quickly launch lifesaving boats toward the dangerous river bar. Its long dock was built wide and strong enough to carry vehicle traffic and led out to the largest Coast Guard boathouse on the Oregon Coast.

When a fire completely destroyed the boathouse in 1966, people continued to use the undamaged dock to fish and crab.

A few years later, Douglas County took over the maintenance of the dock, built a large platform where the boathouse once stood and officially opened it as a public facility.

“Good for the Community” In a community that sees a constant rush of summertime traffic, the Crab Dock is a place that makes people sit down for a while. Strangers mingle together, asking, “How’s it going? What bait are you using?”

There’s no competition here. People laugh, sharing advice or crabbing superstitions, while nearby some teenage boys test their luck sticking their fingers into angry claw-filled buckets.

A few fishermen are casting for salmon, herring, and perch, a safer place to fish than the slippery jetty rocks nearby. Scuba divers sometimes explore the sea life beneath the pilings. One diver writes on an online forum, “The Crab Dock at Winchester Bay is a nice location for just about everything. We wanted to ‘pull up roots’ and move here once we realized everything this small community could offer.”

Steve Riebe agrees. “The Crab Dock is good for the community. The community needs it.”

Saving the Crab Dock But the 77-year-old structure is beginning to deteriorate, and repairs won’t be cheap. While work is already being done on the worst sections, the Douglas County Parks Department is trying to raise the support and the money it needs to save the rest of the structure.

It’s a nail-biter for the people of Winchester Bay, who know how easily summertime crowds might decide to visit a different coastal town. There’s no other dock large enough to hold the people, dogs, chairs, coolers, crabs and conversations that make the Crab Dock such a special place. It’s one place that Douglas County cannot afford to lose.

A visit to the Elkton Community Education Center — and its stunning Butterfly Pavilion — delights visitors of all ages.

From Emily Dickinson’s “Two Butterflies Went Out at Noon” In her poem, “Two Butterflies Went Out at Noon,” Emily Dickinson (18301886), the Belle of Amherst, America’s beloved and most eccentric and prolific poet, captured the fascination and awe we have of butterflies. The early Greeks, the Elkton Butterfly Pavilion tells us, used the word “psyche” both for “soul” and for “butterfly.”

The Butterfly Pavilion is part of the Elkton Community Education Center, an independent non-profit dedicated to enriching the cultural, education and social lives of rural Oregon. It is a yearround community center and a summer tourist destination on the banks of the Umpqua River.

Situated on 30 acres of a former sheep pasture in rural Douglas County, the pavilion is a wonder of “oohs” and “aahs” — but that’s not all that’s there. On the river’s edge of the property, Fort Umpqua, a replica of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s southern-most outpost, tells us about the trading and trapping and settlement that went on here from 1836 to 1851. Now exquisitely laid out, signed and maintained, the center adds to the environmental, cultural and historical understanding of this region.

Expanding the Natural Habitat

The variety, the color, the things to do and to look at captured the attention of a score or more of energetic youngsters from a pre-kindergarten classroom at

Roseburg’s Cobb Street School in late May—and it was the butterfly pavilion they went to first. The point of their outing, after all, was to release the “painted ladies” they had raised in their classroom. One by one, launched from a dozen different fingertips, the colorful, delicate, small Lepidoptera took flight within the enclosure.

Volunteers Kris Hendricks, board member and education coordinator, and Barbara Slott, who styles herself the butterfly “wrangler,” had a great deal more to show how these insects thrive, travel and undergo that wondrous metamorphosis that is the four-stage life cycle unique to their order.

Elkton’s Butterfly Rearing and Native Plant Project works to expand the habitat, boost survival rates and release mature butterflies into a natural environment. Executive Director Marjory Hamann tells us that as our world becomes more densely developed, the natural habitat of butterflies has diminished. The work done in Elkton is a resource for the whole region and beyond.

A Realized Dream

The Community Education Center and its butterfly pavilion were founded in 1999 by Elkton resident Carol Beckley, who had a passion for young people, for native plants and for her home. She wanted to enhance the lives of different generations of the people in and around this portion of the Umpqua River Valley.

By tending, displaying and explaining the flowering beds that surround the pavilion, the Elkton Center shows us how we can become part of the threegeneration migration of monarchs and other butterflies that travel every year from such long distances as Baja California to southern British Columbia.

The beauty and vitality of the beds, grounds and habitat are possible because a summer youth employment program. In addition to the leadership of Hamann, her board, and enthusiastic volunteer and paid staff members, keeps them that way.

Lessons for Our Gardens

The people at the butterfly center want us to surround our homes with the environment butterflies need to feed, to rest and to hide from predators and the weather along their route. They require a place to lay eggs on the food plant their larvae, or caterpillars, will feed. The caterpillars grow, sometimes very rapidly, and form a chrysalis or “cocoon.” When metamorphosis is complete, the pupal skin splits, the adult insect climbs out and, after its wings have expanded and dried, it flies off.

The monarch butterfly, a magnificent species known to most of us, looks for nectar plants, such as the foxglove, and for milkweed as a host. Both do well in local gardens. The painted ladies that the young students brought with them look for mallow. The Elkton Center’s dynamic website shows several bed layouts we can adopt for to the space in our yards and the plants that will attract butterflies.

Beyond Butterflies

Native plants can both beautify our homes and grow a rich wildlife habitat for birds, mammals, butterflies and other insects. Oregon plants exist for nearly every garden in a great variety of flowers, foliage and fruit. Northwest plants provide an ideal refuge and source of food for birds and animals that roam and fly here. These plants survive under the seasonal conditions we see every year. Native green conifers provide a delightful mix with deciduous plants for a year-long, attractive garden.

Like butterflies, birds need places feed, rest and hide from predators and weather. For our smaller avian friends, shrubs that are pruned and well-tended offer

a place to escape from danger and take cover from the wind, the rain and the hot sun. An abundant supply of the right plants draws birds to our yards. A commercial nursery, the Extension Service, the Audubon Society, the Elkton Community Education Center and sources online list the native herbaceous species that offer cover and sustenance.

The Elkton butterfly pavilion is the sort of place that will get you fired up to work in your garden, offer you a beautiful spot to walk quietly, provide you all of the “how-to’s” you can handle along with the “whys” or allow you simply to admire what nature and a knowledgeable staff and volunteers can do within a forward-looking community. To save you from the aisles of sunscreen choices, long lines at urgent care and confusing advice from the Internet, nurse practitioner and mother of two Wendy Zyziewski answers some burning summer safety questions so you and your family can enjoy the season to its fullest.

SUN PROTECTION Q: What type of sunblock do you recommend for children?

A: For infants, cover them up and use a sunscreen (WaterBabies and BullFrog brands) with at least an SPF 15 to exposed areas (face and back of hands). All other kiddos should wear a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.

Q: What are ways to treat a sunburn for infants and toddlers?

A: Put a cold, wet towel on the burn for 10 to 15 minutes several times a day. Cool baths can help, too. Apply products with oatmeal and moisturizing creams with aloe vera. Use calamine lotion to prevent itch and peeling. Ease the pain with Tylenol and leave blisters alone.

WATER SAFETY Q: What are some ways to teach our children about water safety?

A: Swim lessons are a great way to introduce children to the water and water safety. Even if they have had lessons, children should never be left alone in or near a pool, spa, river or other body of water, not even for a moment. Whenever children are in the water they should be with an adult who is within arm’s length. Drowning can happen in a matter of seconds in a few inches of water. Always enforce strict safety rules—no running, no pushing someone underwater. Your child should always wear a life jacket when he swims or rides in a boat.

HEAT EXHAUSTION Q: How should parents check for heat exhaustion?

A: Heat exhaustion is the body’s response to an excessive loss of water and salt. Signs of this include profuse sweating, cold pale clammy skin, muscle cramps, fatigue, weakness, headache, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, fainting, rapid shallow breathing or a rapid, weak pulse.

Q: What are some preventative measures for heat exhaustion?

A: Avoid activity in the heat of the day.

Children should be well hydrated before even starting to play. Have your child take water breaks every 15 minutes in the shade, and encourage him to drink some water even if he’s not thirsty. During heat waves, spend as much time as possible in cool environments with air-conditioning.

INJURIES Q: For physical injuries, when should parents call the doctor verses bringing them into the emergency room?

A: Concussions should be evaluated at the emergency room if there has been a loss of consciousness. Any fracture or possible fracture should be seen at the ER or urgent care. Here is a list of times when to take a child to ER rather than wait for the PCP: If you have a baby under a month of age who is vomiting, not eating well or excessively sleeping • A child is severely lethargic—staring off into space, too weak to cry, floppy, hard to awaken • Sudden onset of confusion • A child complains of severe pain and/or has inconsolable crying • Sudden inability to walk • A child has an extremely tender abdomen with minimal pressure • Extremely tender testicle • Breathing difficulty—grunting or wheezing with each breath, retractions (where skin pulls in around the ribs) • Infant with bulging soft spot • Any neck injury or stiff neck • Purple or red spots that appear unexpectedly • Fever over 100.4 in a child 3 months or younger

Q: How should minor injuries be cared for?

A: Monitor the child closely over the next 24 hours. Watch for the child to be overly sleepy, vomiting, change in behavior, inconsolable crying and/or a headache that will not resolve or gets worse. You should try to arouse the child every few hours during the night.

POISON OAK Q: What are some ways to treat and prevent poison oak for infants and up?

A: Soak in cool water and let air-dry.

One-percent hydrocortisone cream and/or calamine lotion may help with the itching. Keep children’s fingernails trimmed to discourage scratching. If the child has the rash on their face or groin, or it is spreading all over the body, they should be seen by their PCP for treatment. Teach your child what these plants look like—bright green shiny leaves that grow three to

derizer spice/water solution to make a paste. Apply it on a cotton ball for 20 minutes to the sting. This helps neutralize the sting and decrease the pain.

Massage with ice in a compress for pain. You can use Tylenol or Ibuprofen for pain, as well as over-the-counter one-percent hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to the area up to three times a day for itching.

BUILDING YOGA WARRIORS Yoga helps veterans cope with anxiety and PTSD while increasing strength, balance and flexibility.

Regular yoga practice offers an incredible array of benefits that can greatly improve your quality of life.

Increased muscle strength and tone, better flexibility, a balanced metabolism, a boost in energy and vitality, better sleep, improved posture … the list goes on and on.

Just about anyone can use yoga to increase their strength, balance and flexibility—and Mudra Bergan, a yoga instructor at Body Balance in downtown Roseburg, is taking the benefits of yoga to our local veterans.

The Method A certified yoga instructor since 2012 and yoga practitioner for 22 years, Bergan received a phone call from Steven Stanfield, healthy living director at the YMCA, several years ago.

He was looking for a way to better serve our local veterans by offering a Yoga Warriors class. Bergan jumped at the opportunity. She became a certified Yoga Warriors International instructor while studying under its founder, Lucy Cimini, in 2013.

The Yoga Warriors International Method was designed to alleviate

the symptoms of combat stress and PTSD. These gentle, beginner level classes introduce the basics of yoga while incorporating breathing and relaxation techniques, yoga postures, positive affirmations and emphasis on emotional healing in a positive and safe environment. The 2009 research of this specific practice yielded a significant reduction in anxiety and overall improvements in quality of life among those returning from Iraq.

Appreciative Students Bergan’s free classes, which are held at both the YMCA and the VA Auditorium Building, average between eight to 10 people. She has had more than 70 participants total through the VA alone ranging in ages from 20 to 80.

Her classes follow the YWI method as she provides hands-on assistance for those who need help with balance and proper posing. Bergan’s gentle nature and love for her work comes through as she guides her students though tranquil breathing and relaxation techniques.

Her students give glowing reviews of both the class and Bergan herself.

“She’s a great instructor,” said 73-year-old John Malolepsy, US Air Force. “Her class has helped me with balance and breathing. It’s helped me to understand my body parts and how they work. I have a herniated disc in my neck and back, and this class has kept me from having to see the doctor or take pills for the pain.”

Mike Hoffman, 69-year-old Navy veteran who served in Vietnam— known as the notorious jokester of the class—said he has not just experienced the benefits of the class himself, but he has seen improvement in other class members that were having issues with stiffness.

“One guy in here couldn’t bend over far enough to tie his own shoes,” he said. “But thanks to the stretching and flexibility training this class offers, he can now tie his own shoes again. That right there is all the evidence I need to keep coming.” He emphatically shrugs.

A Positive Effect Hoffman linked Bergan to health behavior coordinator Jason Wilcox and clinical nurse leader Fletcher Watson at the VA, who made it possible for her to teach the class there in the Auditorium building. “[Steven] Stanfield, Wilcox and Watson have secured all of the funding necessary to buy the yoga equipment and supplies for both the YMCA and the VA and have made these classes more assessable to those with injuries,” Bergan said with appreciation.

“Instruction of these classes has impacted me immensely,” she continued.

“I feel as though I am having a truly positive effect on peoples’ wellbeing, which, in turn, has a positive impact on my own wellbeing. I hope to be able to expand my teaching to more specified classes for those with amputations and offer my services to the military in either a healing retreat or research capacity.”

Pizza has been a universally loved dish for more than 7,000 years.

No one really knows where this delicious concoction originated, as records of people adding other ingredients to bread to make it more flavorful can be found throughout ancient history. But late 19th century Italian immigrants were the first to bring pizza to the United States — and for that we say thank you!

Tomaselli’s Pastry Mill and Cafe in Elkton is well known by travelers heading to the Oregon Coast as the best stop for homemade baked goods. Danishes, scones, croissants and other delights brighten up any early morning.

What many people don’t know is that the menu is so much more diverse than just pastries. Full breakfast, lunch, dinner and tapas are available with the same high-quality preparation and care given to all their food — and the pizza, which they wood fire Friday through Sunday, is no exception. Having made their own pizzas for more than 25 years, Tomaselli’s uses homemade dough and sauce, cheeses like gorgonzola and fresh mozzarella, and toppings ranging from pepperoni to smoked salmon.

I sampled a specialty pizza of Canadian bacon with manchego cheese, fig jam and chopped hazelnuts. The wood fire crisps up the thin, hand pressed crust to absolute perfection, and the sweet fig jam gave an amazing balance to the

cheese and meat. Topping it off with chopped hazelnuts, a first for me but an accompaniment I would absolutely use again, and this pizza was an experience worth repeating. I also decided to sample the classic pepperoni. The mozzarella was gooey and creamy, the pepperoni was crispy and not greasy, and they added the perfect amount of sauce. Add all these ingredients to that amazing, hand tossed dough and any pizza traditionalist would agree that Tomaselli’s Pastry Mill and Cafe makes a great slice.

O’Toole’s Pub is a locally owned eatery that provides traditional pub food along with more exotic Irish fare. You will find staples such as burgers, wings, mozzarella sticks and fries on the menu, but you will also see items like deep fried pickles, candied bacon-grilled cheese sandwiches, Scotch eggs, bangers and mash, and Irish nachos.

O’Toole’s is a kid-friendly establishment and kids eat free on Tuesdays. If a cold beer sounds like it would hit the spot, they provide 15 tap beers, three to five of which are always local Roseburg brews, while the rest are Oregon made.

I, of course, was going for the pizza. A thin crusted, hand-rolled dough was the foundation for an amazing pie. All pizza at O’Toole’s is a veritable blank slate, with the sauces, cheeses and topping being chosen by the individual, which is nice if you like to customize your pizza.

I chose the Canadian Bacon with marinara, mozzarella, olives and pineapple.

The crust was loaded with cheese and

food review they don’t skimp on the toppings. If you like a saucy pizza, though, make sure to ask for extra when putting in your order.

They pulled my pizza out of an old fashioned Dumbwaiter, which is always fun to see. The meat was crispy, the pineapple nice and sweet and the mozzarella fresh and delicious. It is definitely big enough to share, so make sure to bring a friend and your appetite.

If you are leaning more towards a non-alcoholic beverage, try a malt or the Steelhead hand crafted root beer.

I had the Garlic Spotted Owl pizza on gluten-free crust, which is made by local company Inspiration Mixes. It wasn’t overly saucy, and the crust was soft and delicious. Loaded with garlic chicken, bacon, tomatoes, green onions, mushrooms and garlic white sauce, the blend

Dakota Street Pizza Company in Sutherlin was the final stop on my pizza extravaganza. This place has a more traditional pizza parlor feel, with such offerings as garlic cheese bread, chicken and spuds. They offer pizza by the slice, and you can also get a 16-inch take-andbake pizza for a 25 percent discount.

Hot sandwiches are also available, as are daily specials. They also have a local wine selection and make sure to carry at least one local brewery on tap. The salad bar is smaller, but it has a nice selection of ingredients that is sure to please.

you are a fan of BBQ, this pizza is for you. I also sampled the namesake pizza, The Dakota. Pepperoni, salami, sausage, mushrooms and black olives loaded on crunchy crust and not too spicy, this is a crowd-pleasing pizza most would be unable to resist.

Dakota Street has a large, open space that is great for big parties and even has 24-inch mammoth pizza size that is perfect for a large group. The play area has a lot to offer kids of all sizes, with a play structure, pinball machines and even Dance Dance Revolution. For smaller tots, an old fashioned, coin- operated horse ride named Sandy is next to the order counter. This is the perfect place for children’s parties and a great family environment.

here is a great little restaurant in Sutherlin by the name of Fusion French Quarter. Although the location is new, the quality and unpredictability of the fused flavors is not.

Shannon Wilson teamed up with Mark Snell several years ago to perfect what they call ‘a worldwide palate of flavors.’ “We like to create an experience when you enter the doors,” says Wilson.

Not only do you explore flavors from all over the world, you get to experience them in foods that you know. Even a simple burger isn’t just a burger at Fusion — it’s a reformed version with a flavor burst that will keep you asking, what makes this so good?

Snell has traveled the world as a chef. “Learning how to use a variety of ingredients has helped us make exciting dishes here in the restaurant,” he says. The new location in Sutherlin has already been producing great food and is destined to be a true landmark for the area. “We love to create a food experience and give our customers what we know,” says Wilson.

Being able to create something on the spot for their customers is also the type of challenge they excel at. It’s why the menu may seem a little more varied than most, and they recognize that everyone has unique preferences. “We will continue to create the best eating atmosphere that we can, and will put delicious food in front of you to do it,” says Wilson. MYRTLE CREEK MUSIC IN THE PARK This music entertainment stage was set 30 years ago making it the longest running free concert series in the Umpqua Valley. Music in the Park is celebrating its anniversary at the beautifully constructed band shell in Millsite Park, complete with permanent stage and dance floor.

The event coordinators have always made efforts to support the talents of gifted entertainers hailing from our own state of Oregon. This year’s lineup once again does not fail to meet their criteria. The season opener on July 7 begins with the 10-member group Sound Stage Revue from Grants Pass, OR. Regular crowd favorite Broadway Phil and The Shouters who have performed many times will grace the stage again July 14.

RIVERBEND LIVE! Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Riverbend Live! has been hosting concerts at scenic Riverbend Park since 1996. Kicking off this milestone year’s concert series on July 1 is funk master Maceo Parker, who has played with legends James Brown, George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. Liz Vice picks up the groove on July 8 with her inspired gospel, soul and R&B sounds that are inspired by her love for life. MUSIC ON THE HALFSHELL Douglas County’s own Music on the Half Shell marks its 25th anniversary this year, and 2016’s entertainment lineup is worthy of a silver celebration. The Tuesday night open-air concerts, held at Stewart Park in Roseburg, run June 21 through August 9. Admission is free, but donations are always welcome for this volunteer-staffed event.

The eight-week music festival kicked off in June with Brazilian singer Luisa Maita and the Mexican fiddling group Villalobos Brothers. recipes Summer Sangria

Sangria made with a Rosé of Pinot Noir is the season in a glass. Light and sparkling with fresh fruit swirling round, it is the dance of summer. The strawberries speak to the wine and the twist of citrus adds an element of scent that lingers like a soft, summer evening. Recipe provided by Nancy Rodriguez at Triple Oak Wine Vault in Oakland, Oregon.

Ingredients Directions 2 pints strawberries, thinly sliced 1. Freeze one bottle of sparkling water into ice cubes.

(When blueberries come into season they can 2 oranges or tangelos, thinly sliced be frozen into the ice cubes. Red grapes may 1 lemon peel, julienne cut (no pith) also be used.)

1/2 cup simple syrup infused 2. Make the simple syrup with a ratio of one with cinnamon to one sugar and water, add cinnamon stick, 4 ea. cinnamon sticks simmer for 30 minutes. Remove cinnamon 2 1 7 oz. bottles of sparkling water, stick and allow to cool completely. flavor of choice 3. Slice the strawberries and citrus. Reserve 1 750 ml Bottle of dry Rosé some of the fruit for garnish.

4. Into a large glass pitcher add the sliced strawberries and citrus. Cover with the cinnamon- infused, simple syrup.

5. Add the bottle of Rose’ and finish with the remaining bottle of sparkling water. Add ice cubes into wine glasses and pour the Sangria over ice.

Garnish with remaining fruit.

Serves 6 to 8.

Citrus Basil Manhattan

Provided by Lisa at True Kitchen + Bar and hand crafted by one of the many talented tenders.

A refreshingly smooth summer drink as easy as a sunny afternoon, this drink can be enjoyed using other bourbons but I.W. Harper is a nice smooth option.

Ingredients 2 parts I.W. Harper Bourbon whiskey 1 part simple syrup

Directions 1. Muddle basil leaves

2 basil leaves muddled

2. Place all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake and pour through a strainer into glass.

dash of Angostura bitters

3. Drink and enjoy!

This refreshing seasonal summer cocktail provided by talented mixologist Faith, at Salud Restaurant & Brewery in downtown Roseburg. Faith has been with the Familia at Salud since the beginning, creating and crafting all of her syrups to use in the specially made cocktails. She has provided a recipe for the cherry simple syrup in this drink recipe.

OREGON CHERRY SIMPLE SYRUP

VERY CHERRY MOJITO

Ingredients 2 pounds Oregon Bing cherries

Ingredients 2 oz Silver Rum

2 cups water

½ oz fresh squeezed lime juice

1 cup white sugar

¼ lime sliced

Directions 1. Bring cherries and water to a boil and cook for 3 to 5 minutes until cherries are soft.

2. Strain cherries with a cheese cloth.

3. Return cherry juice to sauce pan on medium heat with white sugar.

Bring to a boil for 5 minutes.

4. Let cool then refrigerate.

Keeps 6 to 12 months.

sprig of fresh sweet mint 1 oz Oregon Bing Cherry Simple Syrup soda sater ice Directions 1. Muddle fresh mint leaves and lime slices with 3 to 4 ice cubes.

2. Add rum and lime juice to shaker and shake, shake your booty too!

Watermelon Mockarita

Designated driver or non alcoholic drinker, you shouldn’t be left to soda or water. Faith at Salud has created this refreshing summer drink for you to enjoy too!.

Ingredients 8 cups pureed seedless watermelon (you’ll need to work in batches with your blender) ½ cup fresh squeezed lime juice 4-5 tablespoons agave nectar (more or less to taste for sweetness) Splash of lime soda or soda water

Directions All ingredients can be finished in a pitcher or individual glasses with ice. Top off with either soda water or lemon lime soda of your choice, depending on level of desired sweetness.

Garnish glasses with thin lime wheels and fresh mint. Enjoy!

Trail Cred and Card Tricks One perfect day on the North Umpqua Trail…

Story and photos by Jack Earl There always seems to be an extra measure of respect—call it Trail Cred—when you let slip you hiked the Dread and Terror section of the North Umpqua Trail. The name alone can leave mouths agape and eyes open wide, awestruck you managed to hike the 13 miles and somehow survived to tell about it.

If only the trail carried with it a doomand-gloom history worthy of its name.

If hidden somewhere in its past was an ancient murder, stories of mischief and mayhem, or a campfire tale of a vicious bear mauling—anything to have earned the ominous title.

trails that climb and curve its way along the North Umpqua River, offering the most diverse and jaw dropping scenery of any segment.

Make no mistake, it can be difficult—the elevation gain alone is 1,200 feet, and it comes it exhausting chunks. And the trail is so narrow and the drop-off so steep in areas, it is one of the few sections where travel on horseback is not recommended, although it’s not uncommon to find yourself crossing paths with mountain bikers who revel in its dangerous and challenging conditions.

But sadly, no, this magnificent section of the N.U.T. was named after the tall ridgeline south of the river the trail shadows. When the area was first mapped a century ago, two men on horseback attempted to describe the hillside’s difficult terrain and conditions for fire fighting purposes, which included a dreadful and terrible thicket of brush.

OK. The trail’s name pays homage to a bush—and yes, a big nasty bush with huge thorns—but let’s somehow get the conversation back to those dangerous forest creatures. You know, to keep the cred alive.

Along the way you’ll encounter deep forests of old growth and a shallow marsh with giant ferns. You’ll climb Bergman Bluff and step cautiously on a path no more than a foot wide, carved through a lava outcrop from the eruption of Mount Mazama. You’ll need to stop here and catch your breath because your heart will be pounding. But be warned, you’ve just begun your accent, and you will swear the Dread and Terror is all uphill.

And everywhere, water. Rivers, creeks and streams, water pouring mysteriously out of rocky hillsides, hidden springs erupting into roaring torrents cascading to catch the North Umpqua below. You will slosh through it, jump across it, maneuver your way around it. At times the trail itself is a little more than a creek bed.

You will get wet. Nature’s natural air conditioning cools you as you stand beneath several falls along the way, and later, as you approach the summit of the trail, you will stare off in the distance at the granddaddy of them all, Lemolo Falls.

But be warned. What you won’t find along the Dread and Terror are many places to rest.

Pre-Hike Fuel-Up So let’s back up and start this adventure off right. To find the North Umpqua Trail, begin in downtown Roseburg where Highway 138 East begins just a few feet from the Douglas County Library on Diamond Lake Boulevard. If you are hiking with a group, this is a great place to meet up, park the extra vehicles and carpool. After passing through the small town of Glide, go an extra few miles to the bump in the road of Idleyld Park and pull into the restaurant that bears the same name.

The Idleyld Lodge is housed in a century-old rustic building that over the years has witnessed everything from weddings and funerals to community dances and boxing matches. Now it simply serves up delicious meals necessary to fuel your hiking adventure.

The husband and wife team of Jessica Mathison and Ron Welch provides the perfect combination—Jessica is in charge of the kitchen, and Ron makes sure everyone in the dining area is taken care of.

Don’t let the menu fool you, because while it might appear there has been some kind of mistake (the prices appear to be from the last century) it’s not only correct, but surprisingly diverse, including Chicken and Waffles. Go for it! And remind yourself that soon you will be on the Dread and Terror. This just might be your last meal.

And The Idleyld Lodge and Restaurant is not only family friendly, but it has a full liquor license as well, so don’t be afraid

to order a Blood Mary with your meal.

And ask for it extra spicy. Remember, this is a day of adventure!

While you are sipping your morning cocktail (or just coffee), wave Ron over and ask him politely for the specialty of the house—his slight-of-hand card tricks performed at your table, inches from your unbelieving eyes. You will walk away from the Idleyld rubbing your full belly while scratching your head, and for miles the conversation in the car will be, “How did he do that?”

About 50 miles up Highway 138 at milepost 75, turn left into the entrance to Toketee Falls and go past the parking area, traveling around the lake and campground of the same name. In approximately 2 miles, at the Y, turn onto Forest Road 3401, cross over a narrow bridge, and drive another two miles to the parking area of the Umpqua Hot Springs.

Recent changes from the Umpqua National Forest eliminated all parking on the forest road, so while parking is very limited, pay the $5 fee and find a space in the authorized area.

Planning Your Adventure The trailhead to the Dread and Terror is unmarked and difficult to find, but from the parking area, walk about 100 yards up the forest road and look for a small entrance to the trail on the left.

But before you take the first step onto the D and T, let’s review the options. With 13, often treacherous miles ahead, hiking the entire segment in the usual in-andout manner is unrealistic, even for the most accomplished backpacker.

But even the novice with good walking shoes can get a great look at the trail by covering just the first few miles. The dense bogs along the river seem almost prehistoric—a scene taken directly from Grimm—and within the first 15 minutes you will cross over Surprise Falls, staring at the magnificence of water gushing full force straight out of solid rock.

Soon, Columnar Falls, where grooved basalt cliffs, covered in lacy moss, provide the backdrop of cascading water falling from above, then disappearing into the ground beneath your feet.

Later, about three miles in, the trail tumbles down again to the river and wanders amidst vibrant colors of mossy celadon and giant ferns seemingly so out of place. Here you’ll find a rocky beach to rest, and possibly contemplate how much farther you want to go, because a mile or so ahead, The Dread and Terror begins to live up to its name.

So here’s the list of the things you need to bring on your hiking adventure: 1. Good shoes. Hiking boots are preferred, but walking or running shoes will work.

2. Water. You will be surrounded by it, but you’ll get thirsty.

3. Insect repellent. Where there is water, there are mosquitoes.

And don’t forget your sense of adventure and a camera. Because come Monday morning, when you casually mention to coworkers you hiked the Dread and Terror over the weekend, they are going to want to see pictures.

Then you will know first hand all about Trail Cred.

This overlook is the biggest view of the Umpqua Valley that I know of and it’s available to everyone. So let’s get going.

When you get to the top of the ridge go right on the gravel road and keep going until you reach the view point, you can’t miss it.

Head into Garden Valley then take the exit towards Kruse Farms Produce stand. From here it’s 10 miles to your new view point. Go on out to Melrose where you will pass the Melrose Store on your right. Go on up the hill and start looking for the Doerner Rd. sign. Turn right on Doerner Rd. this will put Callahan Ridge out in front of you.

After a short distance you will come to a fork in the road, stay right and keep going uphill. Soon you will start a steep climb up the ridge, these switch backs are potentially hazardous so watch for traffic coming down the hill. On the way down use a low gear along with your brakes.

This will be an especially impressive view when the fall colors are turned up on high. For a special treat go up to this view point when the valley is full of fog. Chances are you will pop out of the fog to find a spectacular view. On days like these you can see all the way to Mt. McLoughlin which is down by Medford.

On the way back into town stop off at Kruse Farms and pick up some treats.

Any vehicle can make this trip but do be careful on the switchbacks — the road is very steep in this area.

“A Gem”; “A Jewel”; “A Treasure” — these are words which leap from the mouths of visitors as they breathlessly try to capture their joy when they visit Roseburg’s Umpqua Valley Arts Association (UVAA).

UVAA (or the “Arts Center” as locals call it), is one of the premiere destinations in the Northwest for art lovers. Located less than a mile west of I-5 exit 124, the beautiful Colonial-revival style building is itself a destination. Originally built in 1917 as a Soldiers’ Hospital, the building was designated an historic landmark in 2012.

Once inside the Arts Center as many as a half-dozen different exhibits are on display. Each gallery takes on its own character, and, with shows rotating every two months, audiences experience an amazing range of styles and themes featuring local and regional artists.

UVAA’s most recent exhibit, which closed July 8, vividly demonstrates the vibrancy of the experiences in store for visitors. The show included ArtWorksNW, one of the premiere annual exhibits in the Northwest, and Photography Now which captured the incredible ways this artistic

practice is being approached in 2016. Two other galleries showcased works by Oregon artists. And UVAA devotes one of its galleries to student art.

All UVAA exhibits are developed by a volunteer committee in association with UVAA Gallery Director Sandee McGee. McGee notes that she and her team select shows with an emphasis on “being inclusive. There are so many ways of working, so many voices, and interesting ideas being explored, I feel it’s important to give a range of experiences to viewers; people feel more connected to art when they sense the humanity behind it.”

The permanent collection at the Arts Center, while small in size, is huge in stature. Housed on the 2nd floor, here visitors can enjoy the exquisite, one-ofa-kind works created by Paul Smith on his Smith and Corona typewriter. Here you will also find stunning works created by artists from Roseburg’s Sister City in Japan.

The Gift Gallery at UVAA is a magnet for people seeking out unique handmade wares, ranging from leather and cotton goods to ceramics, landscape art, wooden bowls and sculptures, jewelry and an array of notecards, including reproductions from the Paul Smith collection. Often these gifts are presented at special events held in Gallery II, a beautiful room made available to the public at an affordable cost.

Special events occur year-round at the Arts Center, with a focus on the extraordinary beauty of the “Land of Umpqua.” Every September, UVAA hosts a three-and-a-half day Plein Air event. “Plein Air” means painting out of doors, in the moment. Artists capture the beauty of the Umpqua River, local wineries, and historic downtowns in a spirit of camaraderie.

For 48 years UVAA has also hosted an annual Summer Arts Festival on its adjoining grounds, the treelined Fir Grove Park. The event is a joy-filled family affair with over 100 artist booths, non-stop entertainment on two stages, artist demonstrations and special activities for kids.

On any given day at the Arts Center you will also find artists practicing their crafts in watercolor classes, mixed media, fabric arts and more. A special beehive of activity is the Clay Place, a ceramics studio open over 20 hours a week for instruction individual studio time.

Children also are a lively presence at the Arts Center, not only exhibiting their art, but enjoying classes every Saturday during the school year, along with summer camps. UVAA volunteers also bring art lessons to elementary schools throughout Douglas County, bringing the joy of creative expression to the classroom.

When asked to identify what’s best about UVAA, Executive Director Andrew Apter replied: “What’s wonderful about the Arts Center is where we are — in the heart of beautiful Douglas County — that we make a positive impact every day on the lives of citizens in land of Umpqua. No one could ask for a more fulfilling job!”
