A Note From Our Director.....

Dear Oregon Park District Residents,

Living in Northern Illinois, there’s always a feeling of excitement and anticipation when fall is around the corner. Autumn on Parade, fall foliage and cooler weather are always highlights for our community. The excitement will be even bigger this year due to the recent revitalization of our downtown corridor. Our history, new businesses, new festivals, improved streetscapes and façade improvements intertwine to make Oregon a wonderful place to live, work and play. These changes, just like changes at the Park District, are only possible when organizations identify goals and pursue those goals through proper planning. Planning is the key to success in achieving our overall mission as a Park District. Beginning in 2017, commissioners and staff began updating and evaluating the District’s plans for the near-and long-term future. I invite you to review our district wide comprehensive plan and Park West master plan at www. oregonpark.org. The initiatives pursued by the District are a direct result of community interest surveys and the associated planning documents. Initiatives pursued by the District, as a direct result of the comprehensive and master plan, include: • Development of a life cycle plan for the

mechanical systems at the Nash Recreation Center. • Transfer of ownership and management of the Blackhawk Center to Oregon Community Unit School District #220. • Development of a tree replacement plan to Erin Folk address needs at each Executive park site. Director • Implemented an inclusion program to better serve special need families. • Completed phase I of The Reading Nook. Phase II will follow in the spring of 2019. • Staff developed a capital replacement plan for all park amenities and infrastructure. • Received an Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) commitment of $1,086,100 to complete the Rock River Heritage Trail connecting Route 64 to Lowden State Park. • Nash gym renovation – Phase I completed

Initiatives the community can look forward to over the next 9 months include: • Completion of a riverfront master plan for Park East and Kiwanis Park. • Design and engineer community identified master plan improvements at Park West. • Develop a community task force to solicit additional input on programs and facilities.

#oregonparkdistrict

• Launch a new District website. • Utilization of recyclable materials for park amenities to reduce future replacement expenses. • Complete phase II of the Nash gym renovation. • Upgrade fitness center cardio equipment with personal viewing stations. • Development of a long-term capital replacement fund to assist with future capital projects. We will continue to utilize the comprehensive plan and master plan to drive business, operational and future planning decisions. Staff is evaluating long range capital asset replacement and new capital projects through community input and prioritization exercises. We are listening, learning and challenging in ways that we believe will add value to our District for years to come. The Oregon Park District is proud to provide beautiful parks and outstanding community events and programs to help you enjoy this fall, but it doesn’t stop there. Please enjoy the many programs and services featured in our fall and winter activity guide. Our commitment to quality customer and community relationships has driven our success and will continue to do so well into the future.

Oregon Park District Inclusion Program

T

HE Oregon Park District is excited to announce our Inclusion Program officially kicked off in February 2018. Inclusion within the Oregon Park District means individuals with special needs are blended into the same recreation programs and activities as their peers. The Oregon Park District will work with you to provide reasonable accommodations to enable the participant’s successful involvement in a program. The Oregon Park District has always made accommodations for individuals with special needs participating in our programs, but now we offer an official Inclusion Program for our patrons. Using our past experiences, we have taken the time to create internal procedures to include a chain of command and training by Ogle County Educational Cooperative for our staff. This will allow staff to be better equipped to work alongside a wide array of individuals with special needs allowing a better experience in our programs. In 2017, the Oregon Park District took a more conscious approach to accommodate these needs in two of our programs. The swimming lesson program implemented the Angelfish program through the Starfish Aquatics Institute. Instructors completed and were certified through additional courses. The aquatics department successfully accommodated five swimmers into group lessons this past year and had several returning for multiple sessions. In the summer, Camp Oh-Pea-Dee served an additional five campers with the accommodation of a companion. In 2017, Katie Shea, a camp parent, had a child in Camp Oh-Pea-Dee with special needs. Below she shares some thoughts on her experiences. “My son loved Camp Oh-Pea-Dee. Having a place to play and interact with peers made a big difference in his summer. Our whole family benefitted from the experience. I don’t know what we would have done without it. I know

#oregonparkdistrict

that it is not always easy to be inclusive, but I believe that all children benefit from being exposed to others with differing abilities. We were so pleased to hear reports from his companion that other children asked about him and missed him when he wasn’t there. You can imagine how great this made us feel. Thank you so much for your willingness to work with us! Until I became a parent of a child with special needs, I never considered the challenges of finding childcare and social activities. It is hard. There really isn’t an understanding of the widespread benefits of inclusion for all kids. It’s not just about childcare. It’s about friends and interacting with the community. I know these are not easy issues and my beliefs about inclusion have certainly not always been as strong as they are now. I just want to assure you again this is valuable work that you are doing making inclusion a priority. Perhaps your program could serve as a model for others someday. There is such a great need.” The Oregon Park District provides year-round programs for patrons with and without disabilities that focus on skill development, independence, socialization, sense of enjoyment and self-awareness. Inclusion services are offered to create an opportunity for people with special needs to participate in the least restrictive environment and be included in all Park District programs. Inclusion allows the participant to participate in any Park District program with the support of an inclusion companion or other accommodations. Through a comprehensive approach, the Oregon Park District is confident that we can better serve individuals with special needs in any of our Park District programs. At the time of registration, the participant or guardian simply checks the box indicating a need for a special accommodation. An employee will then contact the participant or guardian to discuss further details to provide the best choice to allow the individual to be successful. For more information or questions contact Amanda Zimmermann at Amanda@oregonpark.org or 815-732-3101.

BROADWAY IN CHICAGO - DEAR EVAN HANSEN

Travel by motor-coach to Chicago’s Oriental Theatre to see the newest phenomenon taking Broadway by storm! Dear Evan Hansen is a new American musical about life and the way we live it. A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. The bus will depart from Nash Recreation Center at 2:30 pm to allow time for traffic, shopping and dinner before the 7:30 pm show. Fee includes transportation and theatre ticket. Only 30 tickets will be sold on a first-come basis. Dear Evan Hansen is a 2017 Tony Award winner and 2018 Grammy Award winner. The musical opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre in December 2016 after its world premiere at the Arena Stage in Washington, DC, in July 2015 and an Off-Broadway production in March to May 2016. The titular character, Evan Hansen, is a high school senior with severe social anxiety, which inhibits his ability to connect with other people and make friends. After the death of one of his classmates, he fabricates a lie that inadvertently brings him closer to the classmate’s family, while also allowing him to gain his own sense of purpose.
