NEIGHBORHOOD VINEYARDS

The cool climate of the Willamette Valley gets its defining, superb grape-growing characteristics from the Cascade Mountains to the east and the Oregon Coast Range to the west. Nearly sixty years ago, the region’s rich history of winemaking began.

Since then, the Lower Long Tom AVA was first recognized in 2021, and is adorned with vineyards that thrive in the climate. The AVA was the twenty-second to join Oregon, and the tenth in the Willamette Valley.

Hear from the winemakers themselves about the region’s favorable grape-growing conditions and climate, and how they create the pinot noirs the area is known for, as well as chardonnays, pinot gris, rieslings and more.

Most of the wineries are family-owned, and the makers are committed to producing high-quality wines by using sustainable practices which aim to keep the Willamette Valley a fertile winemaking region for decades to come. Take a sip tour through the different wine varieties in the Willamette Valley, enjoy the golden scenery of the Oregon countryside and make a toast to Corvallis wine country.

Gathering Together Farm

In Town

It’s no surprise that since the Mid-Willamette Valley is teeming with agriculture and opportunity for agritourism, there is a plethora of farmers markets to choose from. The Albany and Corvallis Farmers Markets both run from April to November. At the Albany Farmers’ Market find everything from flowers to Oregon seafood. At the Corvallis Farmers’ Market, explore vegetables and fruits from A to Z, or delicious honey.

From mid-June to mid-October, visit the Philomath Farmers’ Market for more locally grown products. Peoria Road Farm Market is a permanent stand with lovely offerings beginning in April, including stunning florals and seasonal produce. In the winter months, shop at the Corvallis Indoor Winter Market January through mid-April for produce, flowers and locally crafted goods.

Farm Experiences

For an immersive agritourism experience, consider staying the night and learning about what goes on behind the scenes of a real, working farm. Donovan Guest Houses at Donovan’s Place —a working Christmas tree farm with a fruit orchard and pottery studio—are an alternative option to regular lodging.

For a cozy experience at a winery, stay at the vintage vineyard cabin at Lumos Wine Company in Philomath. Wake up among the rows of grapes and visit the tasting room to try the locally grown grape varieties. At Leaping Lamb Farm Stay , join the day-to-day movements of the farm, or watch from the sidelines. Then, stay overnight in the farmhouse that sleeps up to twelve—offering a retreat from city life.

For an adventure without an overnight stay, visit No Regrets Farm & Sanctuary for a therapeutic yoga experience, and join in stretching and meditating with sweet, affectionate goats that participate in the class.

Gardens and Nurseries

Botanical beauties, gardens and nurseries adorn the Mid-Willamette Valley. The Thyme Garden is the one-stop shop for handcrafted artisan goods made from herbs and hops, and the cherry-on-top for culinary delights such as seasonings. In the summer, visit for an event where guests can walk through the garden and then sit down for a luncheon that tastes as good as it looks.

Shonnard’s is a nursery, florist and landscaping business in Philomath. Pick up seasonal flowers and learn how to create a successful beekeeping sanctuary. Garland Nursery has more than six acres of trees and plants galore, and a section of gifts and decor.

Greengable Garden specializes in growing daffodils and tulips. In the fall, visit their pumpkin patch and Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage.

TASTE CULINARY EXPLORATION

CULINARY WONDERLAND

In Corvallis, discover restaurants that offer exciting and innovative menus. Over the years, the region has developed tantalizing culinary creations, from internationally inspired bakeries and desserts to savory brewpubs and options for a classy night out for a special occasion. Corvallis is much more than a college town when it comes to dining options, and with so many farms and regional producers in the area, restaurants are blessed with fresh ingredients and local fixings. Good food is the heart of a trip to the Corvallis area; a roadmap of culinary wonder awaits. Here are a few ways to explore Benton County for breakfast, lunch and dinner (plus dessert).

Breakfast

In Philomath, The Dizzy Hen is the spot for mouthwatering breakfast, brunch, lunch—and now dinner. Order a sausage breakfast sando, complete with grilled onion and sweet potato puree. Grab a mimosa or bloody mary while you’re at it. Bodhi Artisan Kitchen and Bakery serves breakfast quiches and omelets, as well as creative toasts for any time of the day.

Lunch

After a morning of touring the town, stop at Eats & Treats Cafe and find an extensive, dedicated gluten-free menu created by the owners, the McHenry family. In 2007, the family learned they were all intolerant to gluten, and opened Big River Grains a gluten-free grain and flour company—and Eats & Treats to create a variety of glutenfree food. Old World Deli was established in 1977 and serves hearty sandwiches and house-smoked meats. Next door, find the Oregon Trail Brewery and order an afternoon pint.

Dinner

For a taste of Corvallis’ exquisite culinary scene, visit del Alma Restaurant. Sit down to a cocktail and some tapas, or a deep red wine and lamb birria. The flavors will transport diners to Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain by way of the delicious cuisine. Partnering with local farms and purveyors around the Pacific Northwest such as Gathering Together Farm and New Morning Bakery, Castor Kitchen + Bar is a French-, Latin- and Spanishinspired restaurant committed to supporting local farmers, and offers a flexible menu with the changing seasons.

Dessert

Don’t forget dessert! Burst’s Chocolates will satisfy any sweet tooth with delectable confectionaries. Sweet Heart Dessert Bakery is the go-to place for pastries, boba and specialty cakes. At Sugar J’s Ice Cream Workshop, savor funky, tasty flavors and vegan options.

Corvallis Murals Scavenger Hunt

Follow the map to murals hand painted on the sides of buildings. Look for forty murals in the Corvallis area, thanks in large part to the Corvallis Mural Project, which add splashes of color to unexpected locations in an effort to grow the arts scene in town for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Check out more than a dozen art installations at “Art Alley,” located in a narrow passageway between Second and Third streets, and just south of Madison Avenue.

Learn more at corvallismurals.com, or find the scavenger hunt map at the visitor center located at 113 SW Third Street, Suite #101, and solve clues to win a prize at the visitor center when you’ve followed the trail to the end.

Downtown Alley Art Walk

Madison Avenue is the hub for art in downtown Corvallis. Take the self-guided tour (find the map at visitcorvallis. com) all the way from Eighth Street and Madison Avenue to the gorgeous riverfront, seeing spectacles of beautiful art along the way.

More than twenty-five sculptures, enamel-on-metal reproductions of poems, photographs and silkscreen prints decorate the walk.

The Alley Art Project is a creation of the Howland Fund in The Arts Center Endowment, with support from Jim and Ruth Howland. Now, art installed over a twelve-year period embellishes and enhances the beauty of the downtown area. Take a stroll down Madison Avenue, and look out for pieces such as “Cassidy” by Sue McNiel Jacobsen—a life-sized bronze cast of a golden retriever waiting for its owner—and the “Corvallis Mural” by local ceramic artists—a patchwork quilt of ceramic images of Corvallis.

Historic Theaters

The Whiteside Theatre (built in 1922) and The Majestic Theatre (built in 1913), are among the six theaters credited to brothers George and Samuel Whiteside. A century later, these are the only theaters built by the brothers still standing, and each plays an important role in the culture of the entertainment scene in Corvallis. This August, The Majestic Theatre will turn 110 years old. The venue was originally built as a vaudeville house, and was later named the Varsity House in the 1930s before closing in 1977. In 1985, the theater and

a building next to it were purchased by the City of Corvallis. A citizen-led campaign raised more than $1 million for renovations, and the theater reopened in 1990 as a lively performing arts center. Before becoming a part of Corvallis Parks and Recreation in 2015, The Majestic Theatre was operated by a community nonprofit. Today, the Majestic hosts comedy shows, plays, dance performances and musicals. It’s also a gathering place for nonprofits, businesses, civic groups and clubs. Check out a full calendar of performances at majestic.org.

Built for cinema, The Whiteside Theatre was also home to live stage productions. The theater was the second largest movie palace in Oregon in 1922. It survived two fires and a multi-year closure in the early 2000s before The Whiteside Theatre Foundation was formed, bought the venue and began restoration. Today, The Whiteside shows classic films and hosts concerts and special events.

The Arts Center

Located in the old Episcopal Church built in 1889, The Arts Center is a piece of artwork itself. The Carpenter Gothic architecture welcomes visitors with history, culture and alluring exhibits inside.

Exhibits at The Arts Center have been featured in The New York Times, art classes are held for children and adults, and the gift shop is fully stocked with pieces from both local and regional artists.

To learn about current exhibits and classes, visit theartscenter.net, and browse the site for more information about both the history and the future of The Arts Center.

The Corvallis Museum

From the Benton County Historical Society, the Corvallis Museum is located at 411 SW Second Street in downtown Corvallis. The architecture of both the exterior and interior design of the museum was designed to honor the historical context of its location; it welcomes visitors to a playful approach of Benton County’s history. The museum contains four galleries, and spaces in the lobby which reflect the story of John Horner, founder of the former Horner Museum. “Bruce the Moose”—a fixture from the Horner Museum—can be found at the entrance of the building.

Current exhibits at the Corvallis Museum include “Hats & Chairs,” displaying whimsical combinations of, you guessed it, hats and chairs. “A College Town” explores Oregon State University, delving into the past of the college. Exhibits change often, so be sure to catch them while they’re still on display.

Make time to stop by the museum store, where you can find local art, books on regional history, and of course, a plethora of moose and beaver souvenirs.

The museum is currently open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sundays. The Benton County Historical Society continues to operate its original museum in Philomath, open Wednesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission to the museum is free for members of the Benton County Historical Society, so inquire at the front desk about how to join. McDonald and Dunn Forests are used for nearby OSU research projects, and have breathtaking towering trees and winding paths leading to hikes full of peace and exploration. Considered a gold-level bicycle-friendly community in Oregon—according to the League of American Bicyclists—Corvallis is the place to be on two wheels. Search for trail options on therighttrail.org to find routes fit for a mountain, town or gravel bike. If you don’t have a bike, or left yours at home, grab a rental from Peak Sports downtown, which offers both mountain bikes and cruisers for adults and children. Water Weather

Taking a dip in the pool or one of the rivers winding through town is refreshing on a summer day with temperatures in the 80s or 90s. Find a variety of swimming holes in the Corvallis area with the Willamette River and Marys River easily accessible from town.

Get your freshwater fix in Marys River at the Marys River Natural Area off SW Brooklane Drive. Nearby, check out Avery Park, which is great for children and dogs, and has a rope swing into the river.

Just 16 miles south of town, Irish Bend Park is a place to do it all: picnic, camp and swim in the Willamette River.

For a non-river option, try the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis. There, find both indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and Otter Beach, an outdoor water park with a waterslide, toys and more.

Willamette River Water Trail

Ever heard of a trail that you float on? Grab your paddle and personal flotation device (PFD), and get ready to explore Benton County on a river trip. The Willamette River Water Trail has 187 miles of crystalline waterways to explore. Float and paddle through meadows, forests, parks, farms and cities large and small.

Take an hour to do a portion of the trail, or plan for a few days to explore the river on your preferred craft: kayak, SUP, raft, canoe or drift boat. Several local guides and outfitters, such as Willamette Tides, offer paddlesport sales, rentals and instructions before you head out.

Along the way, there are about fifty campsites to choose from. River etiquette is to be courteous, respect private property and leave no trace, including human waste. Leave the camp better than you found it to ensure the trail is around for generations to come.

Prepare for an excursion by heading to the key resource for aiding in trip planning and sharing river hazard information—willamettewatertrail.org. Here you can find information on the required Waterway Access Permits (WAP), itinerary inspiration and recommended packing lists—including a PFD and proper gear for river safety. The site offers downloadable maps to help identify campsites (first come, first serve), learn knowledge on the river features, find info about shuttling and provide history and information as you paddle the river.

Whether on foot or bike, headed out for a day, or taking a week for a thru-hike, the C2C Trail of fers a unique opportunity to enjoy the Oregon Coast Range. The entire route is open to hikers and bikers.

As the trail traverses the Oregon Coast Range, there are more than a dozen trailhead access points to choose from on Forest Service Land. In addition to dispersed camping on Forest Service Land, the Big Elk Campground is a great option for an overnight stay. Plan ahead and check your map as you travel. The trail was a dream for nearly fifty years, but is a reality now due to hard work, cooperation and support from individuals, businesses, private landowners, local governments and the U.S. Forest Service. The trail was a seventeen-year undertaking led by the nonprofit Corvallis-to-theSea (C2C) Trail Partnership. Much of the path is on old gravel logging roads. These, and other sections, were established by dedicated volunteers. Find downloadable trail maps, permit information, current advisories and more at C2Ctrail.org.

Starting your trip in Corvallis, the Benton County Courthouse teaches you about the history of the area and helps you get to know the town better before setting off on your adventure. The Benton County Courthouse is the oldest courthouse in Oregon—construction began in 1888 and finished in 1889.

Timber Towne Coffee, Philomath

In Philomath, stop and pick up a mouthwatering biscuit from Timber Towne Coffee. While you’re there, grab a hot cup of coffee to fuel yourself for the rest of the drive.

Marys Peak

At 4,097 feet, Marys Peak is the highest point in the Oregon Coast Range. The summit has panoramic views of the Willamette Valley and the Cascade Mountains, and takes in one of the rare alpine meadows in the Oregon Coast.

The Thyme Garden

Make a pit stop at this family-owned garden specializing in more than 600 herbs and hops. At the shop on the property, find salves, balms, teas and bath products to take home as a souvenir.

Alsea Falls Recreation Area

A hidden gem, Alsea Falls is tucked behind a mossy forest where falls tumble into the Alsea River. If you want to turn your road trip into an overnighter, there are camping spots available at the falls.

Clemens Park, Alsea

Located on the Alsea River, stop here for a quick snack break and to stretch your legs. Clemens Park has excellent fishing options for those looking to turn the drive into a leisurely road trip.

Deb’s Cafe, Alsea

Ready for lunch? Deb’s Cafe is a great stop for filling up on comfort food almost halfway down the byway. Take a seat in the warm atmosphere and enjoy a slice of pie.

Hayden Covered Bridge

On the way out of Alsea, check out Hayden Covered Bridge: a perfect photo op and a break from driving.

Alsea Bay Historic Interpretive Center, Waldport

Next to the Alsea Bay Bridge, stop by the interpretive center and learn about the historic artistic bridges of Oregon, or catch a clamming or crabbing demonstration during the summer.
