2018 All-State Gala Concerts


Welcome to the 2018 OMEA All-State Gala Concert . As President of the Oregon Music Education Association, I could not be more proud of your child’s achievements and the tremendous music programs and teachers across our state Congratulations on having a student selected to perform in one of our many Honor Ensembles! Being a part of one of these ensembles is a huge honor, and OMEA is grateful for your support and dedication to make this possible These students get to rehearse with amazing conductors and world-class clinicians We are so fortunate that Oregon has an outstanding reputation for high quality honor groups with gifted and positive students I am excited for the experiences your student has received at the 2018 All-State Conference .
We have an amazing team of conference planners that volunteer their time to run an outstanding conference . This team is led by our conference chair, Ms Kathy Briggs Congratulations to Kathy and her conference planning team . The conference and All-state performances would not be possible without their hard work and dedication
I hope the memories created at this event will last a lifetime . Please take a moment to reflect on the impact of music education. Be vocal with your local school and state representatives and be sure to advocate for strong music programs in your area Parents of All-State students know better than anyone the impact music has had on the lives of these fine musicians.

Kathy Briggs has been teaching in public and private schools since 1997 She started her teaching career in the public schools in Minnesota, where she taught elementary music and high school choir foreightyears . Now in her 11th year at St . Mary’s Academy in Portland, Oregon teaching general music and choir, she also conducts the Women’s Chorale at the University of Portland
Ms . Briggs earned her BA in Music Education from the University of WisconsinMadison and her MA in Music Education/Choral Conducting from the University of St Thomas She has earned numerous awards and recognition for her teaching, including the 2016 Oregon ACDA Podium Award for Excellence in the Choral Arts . Her research has been published in the ACDA Choral Journal, she has authored and published general music lesson plans for VH1 and NAfME, and she has been a clinician at both state and regional NAfME conferences Ms Briggs’ choirs have won numerous awards and recognition in the Pacific Northwest, including a performance at the 2013 NAfME Northwest Conference and winning the 2015 OSAA State Choir Championship for 6A schools Her students have toured in New York, Florida, Washington, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and France and her choir has twice been invited to perform for President Obama and the First Lady and their guests in the White House
Ms Briggs is a third-generation educator – both her parents were public school teachers and her grandfather was a high school band director She was active in music and choir from an early age and was a proud tuba player in the band throughout elementary, middle, and high school in her rural Wisconsin home town She is a proud member of ACDA, NAfME, and OMEA and is honored to be the current OMEA President-Elect It is Ms Briggs’ lifelong dream to meet Julie Andrews
Janet Lea teaches Kindergarten through fifth grade general music and fourth and fifth grade choir at North Bay Elementary, at North Bend School District in North Bend, Oregon This is her thirteenth year teaching, and before elementary music, she taught secondary choir. She attended Pacific Lutheran University from 1995-1998, studying music composition . She received
her Bachelor of Arts, with an emphasis in music composition, from Whitworth College in 1999, and her Master of Arts in Teaching from Lewis & Clark College in 2005 . Ms . Lea also holds an Endorsement in Drama from George Fox University.
Jeff Hornick is currently in his twelfth year as Director of Bands at McMinnville High School in McMinnville, Oregon . Previously, he had been Director of Bands at Grant High School in Portland, Oregon, and at Estacada High School and Estacada Junior High School, in Estacada, Oregon
A graduate of Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Mr Hornick has spent most of the last 41 years in the Portland area, having grown up in Hillsboro, Oregon. He credits much of his success to the many fine teachers he had while attending school in Hillsboro and to the faculty in the music department at Lewis and Clark
Jeff has taught music at all levels from 1st and 2nd grade general music through college bands. A firm believer in the power of life-long music making, he is honored to have recently been named the conductor of the Al Kader Shrine Concert Band in Portland. His professional affiliations include membership in the Oregon Music Education Association, the Oregon Band Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the International Association for Jazz Education, the International Trumpet Guild, and the Portland Brass Society
Helping others share the joy of learning through music is the cornerstone of his teaching philosophy
Karen Bohart is the Director of Choirs at Reynolds High School in Troutdale, Oregon where she has taught since 2001 Karen directsfive choirs, including her large auditioned concert choir Pro Cantorum Karen is the current ORACDA/OMEA Choral Liaison chair She has served in the past on the OMEA Board as the Manager for several Oregon All-state choirs She has also served in the past on the Oregon ACDA Board as the Womens Choir Repertoire and Standards Chair. In 2017 she presented at the OMEA State Conference Her session was titled “Cultivating a Choral Community in a Sea of Diversity” which reflected her passion for building community within diverse student populations
Karen has also enjoyed working as a staff member on a trip to Europe with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music, 2015. Karen is a state certified choral adjudicator and has adjudicated choir and solo/ensemble festivals in both Oregon and Vancouver, Washington She enjoys teaching piano and directing the vocal music of the Reynolds High School musicals
Karen holds a Bachelor of Science in Music from the University of Oregon, and a Master of Music Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder
Dan Davey is the Director of Jazz Studies and Music Instructor at Mt Hood Community College in Gresham, Oregon where he directs all jazz ensembles and teaches core music courses . Dan received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the Berklee College of Music and his Master of Music in Instrumental Conducting from the American Band College of Sam Houston State University He taught high school for eight years in Massachusetts before moving into higher education at Stonehill College and now at MHCC Dan works as a professional pianist, organist, and trumpet player and has performed at several notable venues including Symphony Hall, Ryles Jazz Club, Blue Hills Bank Pavilion (Boston, MA), and the Greensville Performing Arts Center (Emporia, VA) He has played in several musical pit orchestras and also with the South Coast Jazz Orchestra, the John Allmark Jazz Orchestra, Herb Reed and the Platters, Doc Severinsen, Allen Vizzutti and Bobby Shew
Dr. Dijana Ihas is an Associate Professor of Music Education at Pacific University, in Forest Grove, Oregon, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in music education, serves as an applied viola instructor, supervises student teachers, and conducts the Pacific Philharmonic Orchestra.
She is a Founding Director and Master Teacher of the String Project, the first and only program of its kind in Oregon. While teaching in public schools, her orchestras won numerous state and national competitions . Dr Ihas’ research interests evolve around instructional strategies, mentoring undergraduate research, and application of string pedagogy methods and approaches in orchestra classes
Her publications appeared in American String Teacher (AST) magazine, Journal of String Research, and Council for Undergraduate Research (CUR) Quarterly Dr
Ihas’ educational background includes MFA in Viola Performance (University of California, Irvine, MM in Music Education (University of Arizona) and PhD in Music Education (University of Oregon )
Dr Wheeler teaches various courses in music education at the University of Oregon, including: courses on elementary music pedagogy, music in early childhood, and research in music education Her research focus is primarily in the area of music perception and cognition . She has presented research at the National Association for Music Education Biennial Conference, the International Symposium for Research in Music Behavior, and the Kansas Music Educators Association State Conference
Dr Wheeler has served as the Elementary Chairperson for the Oregon Music Education Association, Northeast District Elementary Chairperson for the Kansas Music Educators Association, Secretary/Treasurer for the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association, Flute and Woodwind ensemble Adjudicator for the Arkansas School Band and Orchestra Association, Curriculum and Instructional coach for elementary music educators in Kansas, Professional Development Instructor for public school music educators in Oregon, Missouri and Kansas, guest Clinician/Conductor in Missouri and Kansas, and as a public school music educator in Iowa, Arkansas, and Kansas .
Dr Wheeler is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), Kansas Music Educators Association (KSMEA), Oregon Music Education Association (OMEA), and the Society for Music Perception and Cognition (SMPC)
Mari Schay is the general music teacher at Earl Boyles Elementary School in David Douglas School District, where she teaches preschool through fifth grade general music and an after school marimba band In addition to her teaching, Mari is a regular contributor to Activate Magazine as well as an author of books intended to help elementary music teachers design curriculum She lives in Portland with her family
Randy Solansky is in his first year as the Director of Bands at Joseph Lane Middle School, having previously taught band and choir at Douglas High School in Winston, Oregon Mr Solansky is a graduate of Oregon State University, where he was a graduate teaching assistant to Dr. Chris Chapman and the OSU Wind Ensemble Currently, Randy plays clarinet in the Roseburg Community Band and teaches at the Twin Rocks Summer Band Camp
Mary Ann is a retired music educator. She taught K-12 music in John Day, Oregon for 24 years, and now enjoys substituting in Central Oregon schools . Mary Ann has been a member of the OMEA board for over ten years where she has served as the Small Schools Chair, District 6 Chair, and the OMEA Conference Housing Chair. She has also chaperoned the Oregon Ambassadors of Music on several tours of Europe and been a staff member for the Western International Band Clinic
Jennifer Bell is the Director of Bands at McNary High School Prior to teaching in Salem she taught in Grants Pass at North Middle School for one year Karl Raschkes recruited Jennifer to be the Director of Bands at Claggett Creek Middle School . In 2011 she was asked to join the McNary Fine Arts team and served as the Director of Bands at both Claggett Creek Middle School and McNary High School . Now she teaches full time at McNary High School and conducts the Marching Band, Basketball Band, Percussion Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble Jennifer graduated from University of Oregon in 2001 with a Bachelor of Music Education and a Master’s Degree in Music Education in 2006 She has been nominated for Music Educator of the Year by the Oregon Symphony Association in Salem in 2005, 2006, and 2008 and 2014 She is a member of Phi Beta Mu International Band Director Honorary Fraternity, OBDA, OMEA and NAfME

Cheryl Floyd completed her twenty-fifth year as Director of Bands at Hill Country Middle School in Austin, Texas in May 2017 Prior to her tenure at Hill Country, she served as Director of Bands at Murchison Middle School, also in Austin, for eight years Musical organizations under her leadership have consistently been honored for musical excellence at both local contests and national invitational festivals . Mrs . Floyd is recognized nationally for her educational and musical achievements at the middle school level In 1990, her Murchison program was the recipient of the coveted Sudler Cup Award presented to exemplary middle school band programs by the John Philip Sousa Foundation The Hill Country Middle School Band has performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in 1998 and again in 2006,
Music For All’s National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis (March 2012), and most recently at the Western International Band Clinic (November 2014) under Mrs Floyd’s direction
Mrs Floyd routinely serves as a conductor on the University of Texas at Austin band camp faculty, and has been a member of summer music faculties at Music For All’s Summer Symposium, Arkansas Tech University, Baylor University, Texas Lutheran University Stephen F Austin University, University of Colorado at Boulder, and the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis She enjoys an active schedule as an adjudicator, clinician, author and guest conductor throughout the United States, having served as one of the first women guest conductors of the United States Navy Band in Washington, D .C . in September, 1998 .
In 2003, Mrs Floyd was elected to the American Bandmasters Association She is the fifth female member of this 225 member organization and the first middle school band director to be chosen for ABA membership
Over the past twenty plus years, she has maintained a keen interest in commissioning new works for concert band and has collaborated with such internationally recognized composers as Frank Ticheli, Cajun Folk Songs, Shenandoah; Bob Margolis, Renaissance Fair; Dana Wilson, Sang!; Ron Nelson, Courtly Airs and Dances; Steven Barton, Hill Country Flourishes; Chris Tucker, Twilight in the Wilderness; Catherine McMichael, Cape Breton Postcard; John Mackey, Undertow; Donald Grantham, Spangled Heavens; a consortium commission for TMEA’s MS Region 18 by Viet Cuong, Diamond Tide; and most recently, Sparkle by Scott McAllister. The works generated by these ongoing projects have been acknowledged as being among the most significant works for young band
A 1980 graduate of Baylor University, Mrs Floyd has also done graduate work at the University of Texas with Paula Crider, Robert Duke and Karl Kraber Since 1985 she has served as co-principal flute with the Austin Symphonic Band and in this capacity has performed at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic on two occasions, the American Bandmasters Association in 1993 and before the Texas Music Educators Association and Texas Bandmasters Association on numerous occasions She is a member of ABA, TMEA, TBA, and Phi Beta Mu
Paramount in her life is her twenty-three year old son, Richard Weston, who is a 2012 Westlake High School graduate and a 2016 graduate of the University of Texas in Austin
Ann McBride graduated with a BA in Music Education from the University of Minnesota – Moorhead, and a M Ed in Education Technology, from Lesley University Ann is currently the band director at West Orient Middle School in the Gresham-Barlow School District She has been directing bands for 21 years, in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, the Oregon Trail School District, and, for the last 15 years, at West Orient In addition to co-managing the All-State Band, Ann has served on the OMEA board, representing District 2 She organizes festivals, has taught at band camps, and has worked for years on band curriculum and assessment for the Gresham-Barlow School District
When Ann is not teaching music, you will find her bicycling, running, or swimming as she prepares for her next triathlon Ann loves spending time with her husband and they like to travel around the country and the world They can frequently be found on the hunt for amazing food in Portland’s diverse culinary scene, or hiking and exploring in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. She also enjoys quiet days at home hanging out with her cats .
Jenna Gagne lives in Gresham, Oregon and is now in her sixth year as Director of Bands at Dexter McCarty Middle School in the Gresham-Barlow School District She teaches Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced Bands, Jazz Band, a world music class, and an AVID class
Ms . Gagne graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Music degree in 2011 and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree in 2012 In addition to teaching at Northwest Band Camps, Willamette Valley Band Camp, and Metro Band Camp, Ms Gagne also organizes band festivals and other music events, in addition to her years of assisting in the managing of the Oregon Middle School All State Band .
Ms. Gagne also strives to keep up her flute and piccolo chops by playing as often as she can, including playing in the Warner Pacific College Community Band. When Ms. Gagne is not involved in her musical endeavors, you will find her snowboarding on the slopes of Mt Hood, paddle-boarding and hiking throughout the Northwest, enjoying time on the Coast, and heading back to her native Canada as often as possible When you see her, make sure to ask about poutine and other Canadian delicacies!

Leo Kitajima (new work composed by the guest conductor)
Leo Kitajima was born and raised in Los Angeles, and received his early formal music training at the Colburn School of Performing Arts
Leo has always been interested in exploring and learning from all musical forms and genres He pursued his musical exploration and studies at the University of Southern California, earning a B M in Jazz Studies as the only violinist in the jazz program He also performed with the orchestra, new music ensemble, jazz combo, and Latin-jazz band His eclectic musical palate has given him the opportunity to perform alongside many legendary musicians, such as Tony Bennet, Arturo Sandoval, Christian McBride and Stevie Wonder.
Passionate about promoting musical creativity to young students through music education, Leo has earned a Master in Music Education with an emphasis on improvisation and composition from Northwestern University He has also organized several non-traditional improvisation and composition workshops with a group named, WE ARE LIKE MUSIC Some of the workshops included learning to improvise by “reading” fish swimming at the Aquarium of the Pacific (Long Beach, CA) or creating hip-hop beats using graphic notation and string instruments with Money Mark (Beastie Boys, Beck)
Leo is currently the Director of Orchestra, Jazz, and Chamber Music at Menlo School in Atherton, California . Past faculty positions include the Colburn School of Performing Arts, Pasadena Conservatory of Music, and Westridge School in Pasadena, California .
Eddy Robinson began playing the bass when he was nine years old Between the ages of eleven and eighteen, he participated in the Salem Youth Symphony . A graduate of Sprague High School in Salem, Eddy earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Oregon in 2004
Mr Robinson started the orchestra program in the Florence Unified School District in Florence, Arizona in 2005, where he taught for seven years Eddy was the 2012 co-chair of the Southern Arizona Honor Orchestra Mr Robinson currently teaches orchestra at both Skyview Middle School and Mountain View High School in Bend, Oregon, as well as co-conducts the Central Oregon Youth Orchestra
Amy Brunner grew up in Arcadia, California where she was an active music participant . Starting the cello when she was six, she later auditioned for and became a member of the Pasadena Youth Orchestra While at Arcadia High School, she played French horn and participated in the award winning marching band in which she marched in the President’s Inaugural Parade in 2005 in Washington D .C .
Amy went on to study Music Education at Linfield College. After graduation, she became the band, orchestra, and choir director at Yamhill Carlton Intermediate and High Schools in Yamhill, Oregon There she helped build the program, and after four years she relocated to Bend, Oregon While at Arcadia High School, she played French horn and participated in the award winning marching band . In 2005, they were honored to perform in the President’s Inaugural Parade in Washington D C

Paul Broomhead received a PhD in Music Education from the University of Washington in 1999 He has taught Jr High and High School choir and general music and now teaches collegiate music education He has served as co-editor and contributing author for the books “Arts Education and Literacies” and “(Re)Imagining Content-Area Literacy Instruction ” He has published a broad assortment of research and opinion articles in the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, Music Educators Journal, Journal of Research in Music Education, Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Teacher Education, Teaching Music, Update, Contributions to Music Education, Reading Psychology, Teacher Development He has served the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) as national Chair of the Instructional Strategies SRIG and as Collegiate Chair for the Western Division In Utah, he served as Higher Education Vice President of Utah Music Educators Association
Dr Broomhead has been an active adjudicator, presenter and guest conductor in Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Washington and at national conventions such as Music Educators National Conference, American Association of Higher Education, American Educator’s Research Association, Literacy Research Association
(National Reading Conference), and College Reading Association He is advisor to the BYU chapter of Collegiate National Association for Music Education . His teaching responsibilities include Teacher Education oriented classes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, such as Exploration of Teaching, Student Teaching Seminar, Philosophy of Music, Music Education Research, and Score Preparation/Conducting Still an educator at heart, Dr Broomhead’s favorite teaching assignment is to conduct an un-auditioned choir of some 150 students in the BYU Evening School
Matthew Fletcher lives in Newberg, Oregon, where he has a blast teaching the choirs at Newberg High School This year he is also teaching a choir at Chehalem Valley Middle School, and he previously taught choir and drama in Nyssa Oregon
Matthew attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education He is currently completing a Master’s Degree at Central Washington University.
The most important part of Matthew’s life is the time he spends with his wife and three crazy children . He also likes musical theater, singing in solfege, playing basketball and video games, and making music with anyone willing to play or sing with him
Jesse L . Dreher lives in Salem, Oregon, and for the past ten years has taught choir, private voice, piano, and guitar, at the elementary, middle, and high school levels Currently, he teaches choir, piano, and guitar classes at Waldo Middle School
Jesse has a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Vanguard University of Southern California and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Oregon State University Since earning his degrees, he has taken additional courses, summer workshops, and choral conducting symposiums .
In his spare time, Jesse enjoys going on walks with his fiancée, exploring wilderness, composing choral music, leading worship, writing songs, and gigging with the Portland area Americana rock band, Shoring For a side project, he is producing and recording an album for his church in Salem, Oregon

Sandra Babb is an Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education and Conductor of Bella Voce at Oregon State University A native of Tampa, Florida, Dr Babb taught middle and high school choir and general music in the public schools of central Florida for ten years She received her Bachelor of Music Education, Master of Music Education, and PhD in Music Education from the Florida State University, where she studied with Dr. Judy Bowers and Dr. André Thomas. Prior to her appointment at OSU, she taught at Queens College, CUNY.
Dr Babb teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in choral music education at Oregon State, and she is committed to providing her students with the experiences that they need to succeed in the classroom Actively seeking out partnerships with schools and within the community, Dr. Babb supervises practicum and student teaching with cooperating teachers, and she directs the OSU Choir Camp each summer
Dr Babb is currently serving on the Steering Committee for the National ACDA as the Honor Choir Coordinator. She is also the R & R Chair for Women’s Choirs for Oregon ACDA, and she has served as Student and Youth Activities Chair for New York ACDA . Dr. Babb is the SMTE Area Chair for the Oregon Music Education Association and the faculty advisor for the Oregon State University Collegiate Chapter of NAfME
Dr Babb is an active conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, frequently engaging in guest conducting opportunities throughout the United States, and she has presented at state, regional, and national conferences of ACDA and NAfME . Sandra Babb has published articles in music education journals, and she is a contributing author for various choral textbook series . Her choral ensembles have performed for the Florida, New York, and Southern Division conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, and OSU Bella Voce recently performed for the 2017 Oregon Music Education Association State Conference .
Mary Brandenstein moved to Portland, Oregon from Chicago, Illinois to pursue her career in music education She currently serves as the full-time choral director at Houck Middle School, in the Salem-Keizer school district Over the past three years, Mary has grown the program from two to five performing ensembles, with over 210 enthusiastic singers . Mary is also involved with the Oregon Bach Festival, where she has served as the assistant to the director of education and operations for the past two years She is proud to be an alumna of Millikin University, where she received her BM in Vocal Music Education
Zach Schwalbach is the Director of Choirs at Lake Oswego High School There, he has the privilege of working with five curricular choirs and teaching music theory. Prior appointments include Director of Choirs at the Norwood School in Bethesda, Maryland, Assistant Director of Choirs at River Falls High School in River Falls, WI, and Assistant Director of Choirs at Appleton North High School in Appleton, WI He received his BM in Vocal Music Education from St Olaf College, where he studied with Anton Armstrong and Christopher Aspaas

Elizabeth Núñez, Choir Conductor
Elizabeth Núñez is the Associate Artistic Director of the awardwinning Young People’s Chorus of New York City, founded by YPC Artistic Director Francisco J . Núñez in 1988 . She is a conductor, choral clinician, soloist, and founding artistic director of the SoHarmoniums Women’s Choir At YPC, an organization renowned for its diversity and supreme level of artistic excellence, she created and directs the acclaimed Cantare chorus . She serves as vocal coach for choristers in all six YPC divisions, ranging in age from eight to eighteen, in rehearsals, performances, and for international tours to countries on four continents Elizabeth is the director of YPC’s in-schools program, which brings YPC’s choral education and performance program to over 1,000 children in New York City’s public schools
Kimberly Skondin holds her Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance from University of Oregon and Masters in K-12 Music Education from Portland State University Kimberly is a level four certified Kodály educator and has extensive experience performing, teaching, and directing choirs Kimberly works as artistic director for with Oregon Repertory Singers Youth Choir and is a K-5 music specialist at Hazeldale Elementary in the Beaverton school district Kim has served for three years with OMEA and is on the National Planning committee for the Kodály Conference. Prior to her work in the Portland metro area, she was the K-5 music specialist at Buckingham Elementary School in Bend, Oregon
John Hillan-Payne is delighted to be co-manager of the 2018 OMEA Elementary All-State Choir With thirteen years of directing children’s choirs, teaching classroom music, and presenting teacher workshops, he seeks to instill in students a lifelong passion for music through fun and rigorous experiences with songs and singing games, instrument playing, and movement
He graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music Education degree (2004) and earned a Master’s in Teaching degree from Portland State University (2009) Further trainings include Orff-Schulwerk and Kodály philosophies, as well as National Board Certification. In 2016, he was the recipient of the OMEA Outstanding Music Educator award He works to strengthen music education in Oregon by serving on several boards and committees; he is currently President of Southern-Washington and Oregon Kodály Educators (SWOKE), and has been an Elementary Chair for the Oregon Music Education Association .
Mr Hillan-Payne has taught in the West Linn-Wilsonville School District since 2004, and is currently the music teacher and choral director at Lowrie Primary School .

Angela Broeker is Director of Choral Activities at the University of St Thomas, where she conducts the Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, and Festival Choir and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in choral conducting, choral literature and choral pedagogy Since arriving at the University of St Thomas in 1999, Dr Broeker’s choirs have performed at national, regional, and state conventions of the American Choral Director’s Association, and have toured extensively in Europe and South America
In addition to her university responsibilities, Dr Broeker presents for national, regional, and state conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Organization of American Kodály Educators, and the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. She serves as guest conductor for numerous honor choirs, including the ACDA National Children’s Honor Choir in 2015, honor choirs at the Eastern, Southern, Southwest, North Central, Northwest and Central Division ACDA regional conferences, National Honor Choirs at numerous OAKE conferences, and all-state choirs in more than 30 states International conducting engagements include, honor choirs in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Qingdao, Nanjing, Guangzhou and Dubai
Dr Broeker received her D M A degree from the University of Oklahoma and her M .M . and B .M .E . degrees from Indiana University. Her research interests include authentic, respectful performance of music from diverse cultures, as well as the exploration of varied vocal colors that are possible with this repertoire Recently, she presented keynote speeches around the themes of community and inclusion within the choral experience, and is serving on the National ACDA Committee for Diversity Initiatives and the ACDA-MN 20/20 committee She served as guest editor of the April 2006 Choral Journal, and has written articles for the Choral Journal in 2017, 2011, 2008, and 2006 Other publications include the July 2000 Music Educators Journal, the NAfME Spotlight on Teaching Chorus, as well as many local and regional music publications The book she coauthored with Mary Goetze and Ruth Boshkoff, Educating Young Singers, is published with GIA

Dan Gailey is the Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Music at the University of Kansas, where he directs Jazz Ensemble I, teaches courses in jazz composition, arranging and pedagogy, and produces the annual KU Jazz Festival He has been named to a coveted Chancellor’s Club Teaching Professorship at KU for 2017-23 Dan is the recipient of the 1996 IAJE Gil Evans Fellowship, presented to an emerging jazz composer from an international field of candidates. Under his direction, the KU Jazz Studies Program has been the recipient of 25 DownBeat Student Music Awards, including Jazz Ensemble I’s 2015 award for Best College Jazz Ensemble in the Graduate Division, and their Outstanding Performance Award in the same category in 2017 .
As director of KU Jazz Ensemble I, Dan has led performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City, the 2008 and 2014 Montreux Jazz Festivals in Switzerland, the 2014 Jazz à Vienne Festival in France, the 2017 Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival in California, and the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City He also directed the band in invited appearances at International Association of Jazz Educators Conferences in New York City, Atlanta and Boston
The Dan Gailey Jazz Orchestra debut CD What Did You Dream? was released in July 2010 on Origin/OA2 Records and features all original compositions by Dan The CD spent almost two years on the JazzWeek Radio Airplay charts, and received very favorable reviews from JAZZIZ, JazzTimes and Cadence magazines, among others
Dan has directed all-state high school jazz ensembles in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas and Washington, along with the 2015 NAfME All-Northwest Jazz Ensemble and the 1996 National Band Association National High School Ensemble . He holds degrees from the University of Northern Colorado (MM) and Pacific Lutheran University (BM).
Ben Lawson is the Band and Choir director at Redmond High School in Redmond, Oregon Ben holds a BA in Instrumental Conducting and a MAT in Music Education from Oregon State University. Since his first-year teaching, he has been an active member of OMEA, serving as chairs for multiple festivals at the district level, two years on the State Executive board as 2nd Vice President and Conference Chair of the OMEA 2011 All-State Convention, “Planting the Seed of Inspiration,” as well as the past three years as All-State Jazz Band Manager. Outside of Oregon Ben was the All-NW Wind Symphony Site Manager for two years, and is currently the All-NW Band Manager. He is a certified OBDA/OSAA band adjudicator and is on staff with the Oregon Ambassadors of Music .

Lewis Norfleet serves as Director of Bands at Central Washington University where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and teaches graduate and undergraduate instrumental conducting He also oversees the CWU Band Program that includes three musicmajor concert bands, the 230-member CWU Marching Band and athletic bands
Mr. Norfleet has conducted performances at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Music for All National Concert Band Festival, state and regional National Association for Music Education conferences, as well as numerous honor bands around the country Most recently, the CWU Wind Ensemble performed at the 2016 Washington Music Educators Conference, the 2017 NAfME Northwest Division Conference and will be performing at the College Band Directors National Association Regional Conference in Sonoma, California in March 2018
Prior to his appointment at CWU, Norfleet taught at the secondary and collegiate levels for 19 years His high school programs in Oregon and Washington performed
at several regional and national conferences, were recognized as Oregon State Concert Band Champions, were three-time Northwest Marching Band Circuit Champions, and were twice named a Grammy Foundation Signature School Before teaching in the public schools, Norfleet was the Director of Athletic Bands and Assistant Director of Bands at Oregon State University While at OSU the bands performed at the Fiesta Bowl, Oahu Bowl and the National Concert Hall in Taiwan .
Norfleet is active as a composer and arranger having produced over 300 works for concert band, marching band, jazz band, percussion ensemble and various chamber ensembles While most of his works have been privately commissioned, some have been published by Tapspace Publications, Matrix Publishing, Jalen Publishing, Marching Monk, Center X Productions, and Marching Show Concepts He currently serves as a composer and/or arranger for ensembles across the United States and is in demand as an adjudicator and clinician for concert and marching festivals throughout the country
Norfleet did his doctoral studies in instrumental conducting at the University of Washington and is an alumnus of the University of Oregon where he graduated with honors He is the Northwest Division Chair of the Nation Band Association, a member of the Washington Music Educators Association and College Band Directors National Association, and is a Conn-Selmer Educational Clinician
Stuart Welsh is the Director of Bands at West Albany High School in Albany Oregon . His program includes two jazz bands, three concert bands, two percussion ensembles, AP music theory and Event Technology Originally from Sitka, Alaska, Mr . Welsh received his Bachelors of Instrumental and Vocal Music from the University of Idaho in 1996 He received his Masters of Science in Music from the American Band College in 2001. Mr. Welsh began teaching fifth through twelfth grade music in Leavenworth, Washington in 1996 He has been teaching at West Albany High School since 2004 .

Called one of the most exciting and exhilarating voices in music education today, Peter Loel Boonshaft has been invited to speak or conduct in every state in the nation and around the world Honored by the National Association for Music Education and Music For All as the first recipient of the “George M. Parks Award for Leadership in Music Education,” Dr. Boonshaft has recently been named Director of Education for Jupiter Band Instruments
Dr. Boonshaft is the author of the critically acclaimed best-selling books Teaching Music with Passion, Teaching Music with Purpose, and Teaching Music with Promise, as well as his first book for teachers of other disciplines, Teaching with Passion, Purpose and Promise. He is also co-author of Alfred Music Publishing’s new beginning method book series, Sound Innovations for Band and Sound Innovations for Strings, as well as Sound Innovations: Ensemble Development for Intermediate Concert Band and Sound Innovations: Ensemble Development for Advanced Concert Band

Michael Burch-Pesses is Director of Bands at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band, and teaches courses in conducting and music history. He has received two awards from Pacific for excellence in teaching, and in 2017 was named a Distinguished University Professor, Pacific’s highest award for a faculty member.
A former bandmaster in the U S Navy, he also is the conductor of the awardwinning Oregon Symphonic Band, Oregon’s premier adult community band He is a member of the American Bandmasters Association and is President of the Oregon Band Directors Association . He also is a charter member of the Oregon chapter of Phi Beta Mu

A passionate supporter of composers and the arts of our time, Noe has commissioned and premiered over 100 works to date Having a background in the theatre from an early age, he has a particular interest in works that blend a variety of art forms . He serves regularly as stage director, actor, writer, filmmaker, and conductor for a variety of operatic and theatrical mixedmedia productions
With a foot in both professional and academic circles, he is currently the Executive Artistic Director of the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble Theatre of Music, one of the nation’s oldest professional new music ensembles, with over three-hundred commissions to date . The troupe was invited to perform at the festivals in Edinburgh, Scotland, and Noe played the role of Sisyphus in a new work entitled, Just Out of Reach, which, together co-creator Kieren MacMillan, he wrote and directed The work was subsequently nominated for the prestigious Total Theatre award in Edinburgh
A passionate conducting teacher, Noe is the Director of Orchestras and Professor of Conducting at Michigan State University His conducting students hold positions with the Cleveland Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Orchestre National de France, Colorado Symphony, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Lawrence Conservatory of Music, the University of Houston, Penn State, and the University of Toledo .
Noe has held positions at the University of Texas at Austin, the National Repertory Orchestra, Duquesne University, and the Pittsburgh Opera Center He has also been a regular guest conductor at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University working with operatic, ballet, and symphonic programs . Noe completed his
graduate studies at Rice University in Houston, Texas where he received the Sally Shepherd Perkins Prize in Music, and was the recipient of the Maurice Abravanel Fellowship at the Tanglewood Festival Mr Noe’s principal conducting teacher was Larry Rachleff; he also studied conducting with Robert Spano, Gustav Meier, Gunther Schuller, and Seiji Ozawa
Kristina Stingle is the Orchestra director at Lakeridge Junior and Senior High Schools in Lake Oswego, where she has served since the fall of 2016 . Ms . Stingle previously taught at Neenah High School in Wisconsin for 16 years as an instrumental and choral music educator She led the high school orchestras, an eclectic string ensemble, directed pit orchestras, and was the K-12 Music Department Chair for the district Kristi enjoyed being the Chair of the Wisconsin High School State Honors Music Project (WMEA All-State) from 2012 to 2015, and the High School Orchestra Coordinator and String Bass coach from 2006 to 2010 Stingle was the inaugural conductor of the “Fox Valley Sinfonia” (2015), where she was a part of a comedic team creating unique performances by “amateur” (beginning) musicians in support of the Fox Valley Symphony and Youth Symphony program, which has currently equated over $100,000 in support over the course of three years A graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Stingle was honored by the Civic Music Association of Milwaukee, WI in 2005 for Excellence in Choral Teaching, and was Neenah High School’s Teacher of the Year in 2016
Darian Douglas is a professional violinist and educator, who has been performing and teaching in the Tucson area since 2008, and is currently the Director of Orchestras at Lake Oswego Junior and Senior High Schools and Elementary Strings Program Coordinator in Lake Oswego, Oregon . In the interest of sharing this knowledge of pedagogy to enrich the community, Mr Douglas strives to provide every student with a real-world musical experience, and instill a life-long love of music and performing . Through partnerships with the American String Teachers Association, universities in Oregon, and professional musicians in the community, Mr Douglas initiates more active involvement of students and parents in artistic communities of Lake Oswego and Northwest Oregon

Dr. Amanda Quist, Treble Choir Conductor
Dr. Amanda Quist is Associate Professor and Chair of the Conducting, Organ, and Sacred Music Department at Westminster Choir College . She conducts the Westminster Chapel Choir and Westminster Kantorei, and teaches graduate and undergraduate conducting She is the recipient of Westminster Choir College of Rider University’s 2014 Distinguished Teaching Award Westminster Kantorei, an award-winning early music ensemble, will perform at the American Choral Directors Association’s (ACDA) Eastern Division Conference Kantorei recently performed at the American Handel Festival, Boston Early Music Festival, and just completed its first commercial recording.
During her work with the Westminster Symphonic Choir, Dr Quist collaborated with the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle, and composers Ola Gjeilo and Tarik O’Regan . She recently served as Chorus Master for the premiere of Toshio Hosokawa’s opera Matsukaze at the Spoleto Festival USA and the Lincoln Center Festival The New York Times and Charleston City Paper described the chorus’ performance as “beautifully prepared, gripping,” a “gossamer web of voices” and “bridging the vocal and instrumental textures with perfect intonation .”
Dr Quist is also director of the Westminster Vocal Institute, a highly regarded summer program for talented high school students, and she was previously Director of Choral Activities at San José State University. Her other honors include the prestigious James Mulholland National Choral Award and the Audrey Davidson Early Music Award Her research focus is voice science and pedagogy in choral singing She recently presented an interest session for the National ACDA Conference in Salt Lake City titled “Building Sound and Spirit .” An active guest conductor and clinician, her recent and upcoming appearances include the All State High School Honor Choirs of Texas, California, Tennessee, Vermont, Georgia, and Delaware Dr Quist serves as the National ACDA Repertoire & Resources Coordinator for Collegiate Activities, and has a choral series published through Walton Music .
Jennifer Kercher is the Choir Director at North Salem High School Prior to teaching at North, Jennifer taught choir at Silverton High School, Mark Twain Middle School, and Crossler Middle School
Over the past fifteen years, her choirs have toured locally and nationally and received high honors at competitions A Silverton native, Jennifer completed her undergraduate work at Western Oregon University and her graduate work at George Fox University Jennifer, alongside her husband and two children, is also involved in Salem’s Pentacle Theatre, both performing on-stage and vocal-directing .
Jenna Hernandez, a Texas native, is in her first year of teaching at South Salem High School and Sprague High School Prior to teaching in Salem, she attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas where she earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree with an emphasis in voice (Cum Laude) . While at Baylor she was a four year member of the university’s flagship ensembles as well as the student conducting intern for the Youth Chorus of Central Texas . She studied choral music and conducting with Dr. Lynne Gackle, Dr Stephen Gusukuma, and Dr Michelle Henry Over the course of her studies at Baylor she received the ACDA National Student Award, the Baylor University Outstanding Music Educator Award, and the TMEA Collegiate Music Educator of Excellence Award In addition to work at Baylor, Miss Hernandez participated in summer chamber music programs through the Yale Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and the Westminster Choir College Summer Choral Music Festival

Joshua Habermann, is in his ninth season as Music Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale Since joining the ensemble, he has broadened its repertoire to include not only a cappella literature, but also choral-orchestral masterworks and unique concert experiences that combine music, poetry and the spoken word In 2015, the Desert Chorale was a featured performer at the National Convention of the American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA) in Dancing the Mystery, a program featuring the poetry of Sufi masters Rumi and Hafiz.
Habermann has led honor choirs and choral festivals in North and Latin America, Europe and Asia As a singer (tenor) he has performed with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus (Eugene, Oregon), and Conspirare (Austin, Texas) Recording credits include three projects with Conspirare: Through the Green Fuse, Requiem, a Grammy nominee for best choral recording in 2006, and Threshold of Night, a Grammy nominee for best choral recording and best classical album in 2009
In 2011, Joshua Habermann was named director of the Dallas Symphony Chorus, the official vocal ensemble of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, where he prepares the 200-voice chorus for classical and pops series concerts . Highlights with the
DSO include performances of Bach’s St Matthew Passion, Verdi’s Requiem, Berlioz’ Te Deum, and Britten’s War Requiem, which was performed for the ACDA national convention in 2013 .
From 1996-2008 Habermann was assistant conductor of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, and professor of music at San Francisco State University, where under his direction the SFSU Chamber Singers received international engagements in Havana, Cuba, and undertook concert tours in Germany and the Czech Republic, and China National invitations include the Waging Peace Festival in Eugene, Oregon, multiple appearances at the California Music Educators Convention, and an appearance at the American Choral Directors’ Association regional convention in 2008
From 2008-2011 Habermann was Director of Choral Studies at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, where he led the graduate program in conducting, and directed the Frost Chorale Notable projects in Miami included an appearance at the Florida ACDA convention, and collaborations with the New World Symphony and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas in music of Ives, Schubert and Beethoven During this same period Habermann led the Masterchorale of South Florida in performances of masterworks such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Creation, and Mozart’s Requiem
A native of California, Joshua Habermann is a graduate of Georgetown University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he completed doctoral studies in conducting with Craig Hella Johnson He lives in Dallas with his wife Joanna, daughter Kira and son Kai
Kevin Durfee is in his eleventh year of teaching choirs at La Grande Middle and High Schools Prior to teaching in La Grande, Mr. Durfee taught choir in the Nyssa School district for eight years He received his Associate of Arts degree from Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario Oregon, a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Portland State University and a Master of Arts in Teaching with a music emphasis from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon .
La Grande High School Choirs have enjoyed a tradition of excellence for decades
Under Mr. Durfee’s tenure, La Grande A Cappella Choir has placed in the top three at the OSAA State Choir Championships nine out of ten years, and won the event in 2009, 2012, 2013, and 2015 In addition to teaching, Mr Durfee is also a Chief Warrant Officer Four in the Army National Guard of Idaho, where he commands the 25th Army Band During CW4 Durfee’s tenure as Bandmaster,
the band has performed for President George W Bush, and performed missions in Colorado, Montana, South Carolina, Georgia, Oregon, and California .
Besides his command duties in the band, Mr Durfee also plays piano in the small jazz ensemble: Snake River Jazz Mr Durfee has been married to his beautiful wife Kascie for 27 years Together they have eight children: Jessica, Dononvan, Quentin, Amanda, Sarah, Weston, Eliza, and Olivia, all of whom are musically inclined and busy Kevin’s hobbies outside of music is wrenching on motor-cycles and cars
Oregon native Allison Bassett is a graduate assistant in the School of Music at Portland State University, where she co-conducts the PSU Man Choir and University Choir, teaches classes in Music Education, and sings in the international champion Portland State Chamber Choir Allison is an Oregonlicensed music educator and prior to coming to Portland State, she was the Director of Choral Activities and Theatre Arts at Marshfield High School. During her time at Marshfield, Allison served as the Fine and Performing Arts Department Chair, established a thriving male chorus and more than tripled choir enrollment over three years Allison also served District 7 OMEA in positions of leadership and was awarded “Teacher of the Year” in 2011 by the Coos Bay School District Allison holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Vocal Performance/Choral Music and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from Eastern Oregon University. While at EOU, she was awarded “Music Student of the Year” in 2009 and “Graduate Teacher Student of the Year” in 2010

Todd R Zimbelman is the Director of Bands and Co-Director of the Symphony Orchestra at West Salem High School in the Salem-Keizer School District (OR) Mr Zimbelman has held Director of Bands and Associate Director of Bands positions at the high school and college levels in Oregon and Texas . Mr Zimbelman has been recognized as one of the “Top 50 Directors That Make A Difference”, the Claes Nobel’s Educator of Distinction, and the Oregon Symphony’s Music Educator of the Year
Under his direction, marching bands have received several championships and they are the reigning NWAPA Champions and Bands of America Tacoma Regional Champions Wind ensembles consistently receive superior ratings and most recently have placed first at the 6A OSAA State Band Championship the past nine years in a row (2009-Southridge, 2010-2017-West Salem) His ensembles have attended national and international festivals and have performed at the Oregon Music Education State Conference and the NAfME All-NW Conference . Students under his direction are regularly selected for All-City, All-State, and All-Northwest honor bands as well as the OSAA State Solo Contest .
His arrangements and compositions are performed at national and international festivals and competitions . His technique books are used by several programs across the United States He has adjudicated for several organizations including Bands of America and Drum Corps International He is currently a member of The American Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, National Association for Music Educators, National Band Association, Oregon Band Directors Association, Oregon Music Education Association (president), and Phi Beta Mu
Tom Muller is currently in his twenty-third year of teaching, and is the Associate Director of Bands at David Douglas High School Beginning in 2014, Mr. Muller has also been named the Music Supervisor for the David Douglas School District He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1994 Mr Muller has served as the President of the Oregon Band Directors Association, and has been a member of the Oregon Music Education Association
Board of Control at various times since 1998 Mr Muller is the current Past-President of the Oregon Music Education Association after serving the last two years as President He is also the current Chair of the OSAA State Solo Championship He is a past Middle School Honor Band Chair, as well as a Past Second Vice-President for OMEA Mr Muller was the 2005 and 2012 Conference Chair, where he planned the statewide Conventions for the Oregon Music Education Association Mr Muller served as the Jazz Chair for the 2011 All-Northwest Jazz ensemble and helped to organize the NAfME Northwest Division Conference His positions in OMEA has allowed him to lobby Oregon Senators and Representatives in Washington DC for more support of music education He has also served on the NAfME Northwest Board of Control since 2011 In 2015, he was inducted into Phi Beta Mu, an international association for band directors . In 1996, Mr. Muller was the recipient of the Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award for Excellence in First-year Teaching, and has been honored by Alpha Delta Kappa for his service to education Mr Muller is also the recipient of the 2012-2013 Portland Youth Philharmonic Marie V Dodge Award as an Outstanding School Music Teacher
Tom Muller also maintains an active playing career and has an extensive French horn studio in the East Portland Metro area His students consistently perform in state and regional honor bands . His students also regularly compete and score well at regional and state solo contests, with many top ten placers at the OSAA State Solo Championship Along with his lesson studio, Mr Muller also is frequently asked to adjudicate band festivals, solo and ensemble festivals, and conduct regional honor bands
David Becker retired in 2011 from Lewis & Clark College where he was Director of Bands for 29 years . In addition to directing concert and jazz bands, he taught music education, conducting and jazz appreciation courses, and led Lewis & Clark students on numerous fine arts semesters in London. He also chaired the Music Department for several terms and taught and supervised student teachers for the Graduate School’s MAT program While teaching at Lewis & Clark, he also served for two years as Conductor-In-Residence at Oregon State University
Becker has adjudicated, managed or conducted at over 300 music festivals in 21 states and Canadian provinces His frequent appearances at state, regional and national music conferences as a clinician include conducting several all-state bands Becker is a past president of the Oregon Music Education Association, College Band Directors National Association NW Division and Oregon Alliance for Arts Education. He was the first president of the Oregon Band Directors
Association and continues to chair their Adjudicator Certification Committee. He was a co-creator of the OBDA Band and Orchestra Adjudication System in the early 1980s and helped create and continues to be involved with the Oregon School Activities Association’s State High School Band & Orchestra Championships He also has been responsible for Oregon’s High School Band Contest Literature List since its inception in 1984
He has been the recipient of the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association, Interscholastic Music Outstanding Music Educator Award, Section 8, from the National Federation of State High Schools Associations, and service awards from the Oregon School Activities Association and Oregon Music Education Association, including the John McManus Service Award, named in honor of Becker’s collegiate mentor at the U of O
