DEAR EARTHTALK

What are some New Year’s Resolutions I can make to help the environment? — M. LIND, STURGES, MI

Also, strive to reduce food waste by planning meals, composting organic waste and supporting initiatives that redistribute surplus food to those in need. Another resolution that of us can make is to reduce personal carbon emissions. Embrace

IVEN THE ESCALATING ENVIRONMENTAL challenges facing our planet, directing some of our New Year’s aspirations toward eco-conscious endeavors can make a tangible difference. Luckily there are lots of ways to put your resolve to work for the planet... For starters, one of the most impactful resolutions is to adopt a more mindful approach to consumption. Commit to reducing waste by embracing practices like reusing, repurposing and recycling. Shift to buying reusable items and those with minimal packaging. Support brands committed to sustainable practices. Minimize your use of single-use plastics, another way to make a big impact without much effort. Choose stainless-steel water bottles, cloth shopping bags and glass food containers. Say no to plastic straws, cutlery and excessive packaging whenever possible. Making more sustainable food choices is yet another way to make 2024 greener than 2023. Adopting a more plant-based diet or reduce meat consumption to significantly reduce environmental impact. Pledge to support local, organic and sustainably sourced foods.

It’s that time of year again when you have to make some New Year’s resolutions. How about factoring in climate and the environment this year?

alternatives to fossil fuel-based transportation by walking, cycling, carpooling or using public transit. Also, consider investing in energy-efficient appliances, using renewable energy sources, and supporting initiatives that offset carbon emissions. While they might not be top of mind, changing up daily habits can also reduce your carbon footprint and overall environmental impact.

O R E G O N F A M I LY M A G A Z I N E

Another way to create positive change is to speak out more for environmental policies and initiatives. Support community groups and environmental organizations, and join in local clean-up efforts or conservation projects. Engage in discussions, educate others, and advocate for sustainable practices in your workplace, schools and social circles. Spread awareness about environmental issues and inspire

others to take action. Share information on social media, organize educational events, or start a community garden or recycling program. Encourage friends, family and colleagues to join in your eco-friendly endeavors, fostering a collective effort toward a greener future. Making a resolution is just the first step—commitment is key to achieving lasting change. Progress may require adjustments and perseverance, but every step contributes to a healthier planet. By incorporating these resolutions into your New Year’s goals, you become an active participant in the global movement toward environmental stewardship. Together, let us embark on this journey to protect and preserve the natural world we all call home. Cheers to a more sustainable, eco-conscious year ahead! ✦ CONTACTS: 10 Sustainable New Year’s Resolutions, https://www.centerforecotechnology.org/10-easy-green-new-yearsresolutions/; 12 Actionable and Sustainable New Year’s Resolutions, https://greencitizen.com/blog/sustainable-new-years-resolutions/. ENERALLY, WHEN YOU SEE an Adam Sandler movie created by his company, Happy Madison Productions, you’re in for some raunchy comedy. But Sandler, and director Robert Marianetti, have dialed back the ribald schtick and given Netflix a laugh-out-loud family film that’s genuine, heartfelt, and LEO Happy Madison Productions Rated: PG Streaming on Netflix

nearly sanitized for the younger viewers. One or two Sandler jokes made it into the final cut, but they flash by quickly and kids will focus on the marvelous pint-sized characters, the hilarious parents, and the talking lizard who knows the answers to life’s most puzzling problems. Seventy-four-yearold Leo, the fifth grade class pet, thinks he’s dying, but his terrarium friend, Squirtle the Turtle doesn’t believe him. Nonetheless, when the substitute teacher orders every student to take Leo home for a weekend to teach them responsibility, Leo

sees his chance for freedom. But escaping is harder than it looks and Leo ends up making friends with his human caretakers. They’re shocked and surprised, but they open up to Leo’s philosophical wisdom, and the classroom culture begins to change for the better. Squirtle, however, sabotages Leo’s newfound posse and things go from bad to worse. Ms. Malkin gets in the act when she discovers that Leo can talk, but her solution leaves Leo in the Everglades to fend for himself. After winning

the school’s history contest, the class reconsiders Leo’s positive influence, but they need to rescue him from the great outdoors. Together with Ms. Malkin, it’s a madcap race to find their scaly friend, who discovers that seventy-four is just a mid-life crisis and he has plenty of time ahead. The important lessons, fantastic animation, bouncy soundtrack, and celebrity voice actors make Leo a film worth watching again and again. And be sure to catch the entertaining credits. ✦

E’RE ALREADY ASKING ourselves the questions about artificial intelligence that director Gareth Edwards explores in his new action-packed sci-fi feature, The Creator. Hunting for synthetic beings feels like Blade Runner and their indiscriminate destruction because “they’re just programming, they’re not real” echoes the horrific racism of District 9. But the story of Joshua and Alphie cuts to the heart of what artificial intelligence could become for humans. After a nuclear explosion levels Los Angeles, the simulants are blamed and the West vows to exterminate all of them. In eastern New Asia, humans and synthetics cohabitate peacefully, but a weapon called NOMAD roams Earth targeting and destroying AI outposts. As the East-West war rages, another weapon comes online in order to destroy NOMAD. It’s a little synthetic girl named Alphie and her protector, Joshua, was a

The Psychology of Fresh Starts HOW THE NEW YEAR CAN INSPIRE POSITIVE CHANGE

T

BY AYUSHI SINGH

he New Year is often a time of reflection and renewal. It’s a time when people set goals, make resolutions, and embark on new beginnings. The psychology behind this phenomenon lies in our innate desire for

change and the potential for a fresh start. Researchers gave a name to this psychological trick: the ‘fresh start effect.’ It’s that feeling of hitting the reset button, and, as Wharton behavioral economics Professor Katy Milkman points out: “People are more open to change when they feel they have a fresh start.” Here we’ll explore the psychology behind Fresh Starts and discuss how the New Year can inspire positive change in our lives… THE PSYCHOLOGY OF FRESH STARTS

The Feeling of Control. One of the key psychological factors driving fresh starts is the perception of control. When we start a new year, we feel like we have a clean slate and an opportunity to make positive changes. This perception gives us a sense of control, giving us confidence that we have the power to improve our lives. The Power of Symbolism. The New Year serves as a symbolic event that marks the beginning of a new cycle. It is a time for reflection, introspection, and goal setting. The act of setting a new year’s resolution provides a sense of renewal and purpose. It helps us define a clear direction and provides a framework for positive change. The Placebo Effect. There is a psychological phenomenon known as the placebo effect, which occurs when individuals experience positive changes because they believe they will receive a treatment or a desired outcome. The New Year provides us with a similar placebo effect. Simply believing that we are embarking on a fresh start can motivate us to make positive changes in our lives.

7

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS OF FRESH STARTS Increased Motivation and Productivity. Fresh starts often provide us with a renewed sense of purpose and motivation. They help us set goals and prioritize our actions, leading to increased motivation and productivity. The symbolic nature of the New Year provides us with a sense of accountability, pushing us to make positive changes and follow through on our plans. Overcoming Procrastination. Procrastination, one of the most common hurdles in personal development, often takes a back seat during the fresh start period. As a result of the psychological momentum created by the beginning of a new year, individuals are able to overcome the tendency to delay tasks or postpone changes. When we adopt this mindset, we are more likely to take a proactive approach to addressing challenges and pursuing personal development. Reduced Stress and Anxiety. Starting a new year often brings a sense of relief and freedom from past mistakes and regrets. It provides us with an opportunity to leave behind negative experiences and move forward. This psychological shift can help reduce stress and anxiety, leading to improved overall well-being. Improved Self-Esteem and Confidence. Making positive changes in our lives can have a positive impact on our self-esteem and confidence. When we set and achieve goals, we gain a sense of achievement and competence. This can boost our overall sense of self-worth and self-esteem, leading to greater confidence and a more fulfilling life.

STRATEGIES FOR EMBRACING FRESH STARTS

Set Realistic Goals. When setting New Year resolutions, it’s important to set realistic goals that are achievable. Avoid setting unrealistic expectations that can lead to disappointment and frustration. Break down large goals into smaller, actionable steps to make them more manageable. Create a Support Network. Surrounding yourself with a strong support network is essential for maintaining motivation and staying on track with your goals. Surround yourself with positive people who will encourage and motivate you. Seek out mentors or coaches who can provide guidance and accountability. Celebrate Small Wins. Celebrating small wins along the way is key to maintaining momentum and motivation. Acknowledge and celebrate your progress, no matter how small it may seem. This positive reinforcement will keep you motivated and focused on your larger goals. The psychology of Fresh Starts is a powerful force that can inspire us to make positive changes in our lives. The New Year provides a clean slate, a sense of control, and a symbolic event that motivates us to make positive changes. By setting realistic goals, creating a support network, and celebrating small wins, we can achieve meaningful growth and fulfillment in the coming year. By harnessing the fresh start effect, one can turn aspirations into actions and cultivate a more fulfilling and meaningful life throughout the year. Embrace the power of Fresh Starts and embark on a transformative journey in 2024. ✦

WINTER 2024

Bolstering your immune system during winter, when coughs and colds seem to take control, is a must for the entire family. Supporting your wellness can start in a simple place – with the foods you eat and drink. Consider an easy choice for any season like Florida Orange Juice, which can help you and your loved ones get the vitamins and minerals you need all winter long. With 100% of the daily recommended value of vitamin C in every 8-ounce serving along with key nutrients like potassium and magnesium, there’s a reason it’s referred to as the “Original Wellness Drink.” With no added sugar or artificial flavor, it provides the benefits you need without the additives you don’t. It contains natural sugar from the whole fruit for a delicious solution that’s one of nature’s nutrient-rich foods with vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Plus, it’s easy to use as a nutritional ingredient in wintertime favorites like this comforting Orange Juice and Coconut Chickpea Soup or to start your day strong with a Superfruit Breakfast Smoothie.

“Safeguarding your health against the spread of illness is important year-round, especially during colder months when reports of cold and flu increase,” said Dr. Rosa Walsh, director of scientific research at the Florida Department of Citrus. “A key step in supporting your immune system is maintaining a well-balanced diet that is high in essential nutrients. Incorporating an 8-ounce glass of 100% orange juice can help you meet the recommended daily value of vitamin C and support your hydration.” Beneficial plant compounds, like those in Florida Orange Juice, along with flavonoids and colorful carotenoids work to support the immune system by

fighting inflammation and helping cells communicate, which can help strengthen immune responses when encountering infections.

Recipe

A Delicious Way to Support Your Immune System Additionally, 100% orange juice is a source of phytonutrients like hesperidin, which has been shown in clinical studies to have antioxidant-like properties, heart health benefits and may help reduce inflammation. Hesperidin has also been linked with benefits related to cognitive function, immune system function and bone health. To find more information and immunity-boosting winter recipes, visit FloridaJuice.com.

Paired with a healthy lifestyle, 8 ounces of 100% orange juice may help support a healthy immune system as an excellent source of vitamin C and a good source of vitamin D in fortified juices. Vitamin C is commonly associated with helping maintain and strengthen healthy immune systems by protecting cells and promoting the production and function of immune cells. Meanwhile, vitamin D also plays an important role in regulating immune response by helping immune cells fight off bacteria and viruses.

Tips to know where to go for care HERE’S A GUIDE FOR MATCHING YOUR NEEDS TO A CLINIC OR HOSPITAL

If

YOU’RE SICK OR INJURED, going to the right place for the right care can help you feel better faster. But how do you decide where to go? “Knowing where to go for treatment will not only help you get the best medical care possible, it could also save you time and money,” says Margaret Pattison, MD, medical director of the Emergency Department at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend. PRIMARY CARE: for conditions that need preventive or ongoing care and are not life-threatening In general, if you have a primary care provider, think of your PCP first. The only time this doesn’t apply is if your illness or injury can’t wait. Then, seek care from an open clinic or hospital near you. Why primary care first? Because your primary care provider’s office knows you and your health history. They handle a wide variety of concerns. For services they don’t offer, your PCP office can help you find other doctors or places that provide what you need. They may help smooth the way for you to be seen sooner. It also usually costs you less to see a PCP than the emergency room (ER). SAME-DAY CARE: for general illnesses and minor injuries that need prompt attention PeaceHealth’s same-day or walk-in clinics are a good choice if your primary care clinic is closed or can’t see you right away. These clinics provide many of the same services as primary care clinics; some are even open on evenings and Saturdays. You may be able to make an appointment for the same day or drop in without an appointment. URGENT CARE: for conditions that need immediate care but are not life-threatening Urgent care is a good choice when you need immediate higher-level care but are not experiencing life-threatening illness or injury – sprains or brokes of arms, hands, feet and

toes, moderate burns or cuts, asthma attacks. The clinic has advanced on-site services, including x-rays and labs, that help doctors diagnose and treat injuries or illnesses. It is also open late into the evening and on weekends. EMERGENCY CARE: for conditions that are life- or limb-threatening

O R E G O N F A M I LY M A G A Z I N E

For serious or severe illnesses or injuries, go to the nearest emergency room or call 911. The ER is the right place for conditions that require immediate treatment or immediate results from imaging or testing. When in doubt, don’t delay care. If someone is having a medical emergency, call 911 or seek medical attention right away. ✦

Leveraging Neuroscience to Boost Attention BY DR. REBECCA JACKSON

W

HEN YOUR CHILD STRUGGLES to focus or stay on task, you may find yourself uttering, “Come on, try harder. You can do this.” While those words are well-meaning, they can do more harm than good. Struggles with attention are usually not from a lack of effort. This child often has to work harder throughout the day to accomplish the same tasks others can do easily. And with this knowledge that they are trying, yet still falling short of expectations set by parents and teachers, can come with feelings of self-doubt and shame.

To counteract the frustrations attention challenges can create, implementing strategies to optimize and improve attention can help reduce stress and build confidence.

1

CREATE A ROUTINE THAT SIGNALS THE BRAIN THAT IT’S TIME TO FOCUS. Start by creating a dedicated space for kids to do their work that minimizes visual and noise distractions. Pick a space that is not far from where you are but is quiet and calm. Next, engage the sense of smell to engage the brain and support memory. Diffusing

essential oils during homework time will not only be pleasant, but a recent study out of the University of California at Irvine saw a significant increase in cognition by leveraging the power of the connection between olfaction (smelling) and memory. Finally, begin homework time with ten minutes of vigorous exercise. While it may sound counterintuitive to have your kids move before sitting quietly, you’ll quickly notice the benefits of this routine. Studies have shown that in as little as 10 minutes, individuals who engage in physical activity score higher on cognition tests, including attention and memory.

2

YOU STRENGTHEN WHAT YOU PRACTICE. Sustained attention is the ability to block out distractions and maintain focus for an extended period. This aspect is needed to sit through a math class, a work meeting, or to write an article. This differs from the type of attention used to play video games or scrolling social media. When it comes to muscles and the brain, you strengthen what you use. It’s important to find balance in the types of attention kids use each day. People often gravitate to tasks that do not require sustained attention, such as playing video games or scrolling social media (these tasks utilize short bursts of attention that differ from sustained attention). Ensuring kids practice

sustained attention daily helps improve this type of attention. Reading a book, playing a board game, having a conversation, cooking, arts and crafts, and playing softball are all activities that utilize sustained attention.

3

REDUCE STRESS TO MAXIMIZE FOCUS. Stress hijacks your brain, or the more technical description is an amygdala hijack. The amygdala is a small but mighty part of the brain that processes emotions and connects emotions with other brain functions, including sensory and memory. Psych Central describes this scenario of a brain hijack as “when strong emotions take over the thinking part of your brain.” This means that times of high stress, anger, or anxiety reduce the ability to sustain attention, engage memory, or regulate reactions and behaviors. If your child worries about how they’ll do on a math test, it will be harder to focus on test preparation. Stressing about how much work they have to do will make it take longer to complete. Just saying “homework” can elicit a stress response for our kids, making it harder for them to focus. To help reduce homework stress, start by identifying the source of your child’s anxiety. If they feel overwhelmed with the work they must complete, you can guide them to make a to-do list. If they’re worried about not understanding the content, reviewing the material or finding a YouTube video

WINTER 2024

|

demonstrating the concept can be helpful. Reassure your child that you’re there to help and support them. Whether that means allowing you to review the content or staying in the room while they work independently, you can still show support.

4

MINDFULNESS MEDITATION FOR KIDS TO IMPROVE ATTENTION. Mindfulness meditation focuses on awareness of self and helps to improve attention, even in kids and beginners to meditation. Taking a few moments each night at bedtime to practice breathwork can be a great place to begin mindfulness meditation practice for kids of all ages. With your child, place one hand on the chest and one on the stomach. Take a deep breath in, breathing deep into their tummy. Then, slowly release the breath. Prompt your child to be aware of the rise and fall of their stomach and listen to their breath. Begin with just a few breaths, then gradually work up to doing this for several minutes over time. Not only is this deep breathing exercise very calming before bedtime, but it is also a sustained focus activity. Spending quiet time and being aware of your body and thoughts exercises attentional pathways in the brain, helping improve focus over time. The hardest part of beginning mindfulness meditation with your child is not falling asleep as you do together! ✦

Resolve to Celebrate Your Climate Crisis ‘Wins’ this Year BY DANIEL HIESTAND LANE COUNTY WASTE REDUCTION OUTREACH COORDINATOR

I am

A CYNIC BY NATURE. I expect the worst and hope for the best. Cynicism has its place in a search for the truth, but it’s not always the most helpful characteristic when facing existential threats such as the climate crisis. For example, let’s consider the Y2K “scare.” For readers unfamiliar, the Y2K issue was the possibility that the date change from 1999 to 2000 would cause some computer programming problems. As in major problems like financial systems collapsing, food and water system disruption, and a feeling that we might all be in our version of Mad Max. I remember feeling overwhelmed by these potentially dire outcomes and somewhat frozen in my response. So, what did I do? I bought a few extra jugs of water, a dozen cans of food, some extra batteries, and called it good. Based on media reporting of the time, this was woeful under preparation.

18

In the end, fortunately, there were crickets as midnight came and went. The Y2K example is instructive compared to our collective response to climate change. Most of what we hear is a form of climate doomism, or the idea that no matter what we do, nothing matters because it’s out of our control. The reporting around Y2K gives me a similar feel to what we hear about the climate crisis: the system is just too big, so give up and roll over. Now, I think about how much more engaged I would have felt if I had heard about all the positive efforts and safeguards put in place by companies, governments, and communities to prepare for Y2K instead of the constant reporting on the calamity that “might” happen. What if we had focused on the potential downsides of Y2K paired with the Y2K wins that were happening along the way? In that alternative scenario, I likely would have taken more time to connect with my

WINTER 2024

neighbors, which would have led to better preparation, more trust, and a shared system of values that would have alleviated many of the concerns voiced by the media at the time. There are people much smarter than me who say celebrating wins is a critical component of encouraging public service and civic engagement at community-wide levels, which this moment requires. What does this mean in practice? Take time to celebrate what you are doing, big or small. For example, maybe you started composting, ate less meat, biked to work, or wrote a lawmaker. After your wins, take time to share and celebrate with others. If you need to, put it on your calendars as we start the new year. Celebration doesn’t mean we are at some finish line or ignoring the crisis. Instead, it’s an acknowledgment of our work and a chance to inspire others to continue their efforts, big or small. Celebration is a powerful reminder that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves, and it may inspire you to shed some cynicism and replace it with action and hope. ✦

Engaging with Winter Wildlife D BY KIMBERLY BLAKER

URING THE COLD WINTER months, life slows down as both people and animals take shelter to stay warm. While some wildlife hides away and hibernates, other animals continue to roam, leaving signs of activity behind them. If your family is willing to brave the chill, winter is a great time to explore and observe a different side of nature. Here are some fascinating and fun ways to engage with wildlife, even in frosty weather.

SEARCH FOR ANIMAL TRACKS

During the winter, the weather changes make it easier to find the footprints that animals leave behind. Look for a patch of open ground, especially where there’s mud, sand, or snow, and see if you can spot any tracks that have been left behind. Notice patterns and where the tracks go to make guesses about the animal and its habits. Are the tracks spread far apart? Do they go in a straight line or wander around? Is there one set or multiple? If you follow the tracks and they’re fresh enough, you might even catch a glimpse of the animal that made them. Turn your trek into an extension activity by drawing a sketch of the tracks or taking a picture of the tracks you find. Then look up the tracks at home to see what animals live or have traveled through your neighborhood. If you’re really ambitious, you could bring materials with you to make a cast of the footprints you find.

FEEDING ANIMALS - USE CAUTION!

Food for animals tends to be scarcer in the winter, particularly berries and seeds, which birds and small animals rely on. Winter food shortages are especially likely for animals like squirrels that hide food for later. Animals often lose their stockpiles in parks or backyards because of changes influenced by humans, such as fall cleanup. It can help wildlife if you have healthy food in your yard, such as seeds, nuts, and fruit. But be careful about how you do this, so the animals don’t become dependent on being provided with food by humans, which hurts wildlife in the long run. Don’t put food out regularly. Instead, put it out on an occasional basis. Also, be careful about the kind of food you offer. Some foods may be better or worse than others for the animals in your area. Also, don’t attempt to feed animals by hand because it isn’t safe for you or them. When wildlife gets too comfortable around humans, it can become a nuisance, ultimately requiring it to be removed or destroyed.

ANIMAL SCAVENGER HUNT

Even if there are fewer active animals near you during winter, there may be insects around to hunt for. Grab a magnifying glass and crouch down low in the dirt and plant growth to hunt for some creepy crawlers to observe.

20

WINTER 2024

Birds are also fascinating with the broad range of species. They’re also easier to spot in the winter as leaves have fallen from the trees, and the outdoors is quieter. Stand quietly near bare trees and listen for birds calling out, watch them flying around, and spot their nests tucked up in the trees.

MAKE YOUR YARD SAFE FOR WILDLIFE

Winter can be hard for animals and insects. But there are some simple things you can do at home to make your outdoor spaces more animal friendly. • Leave out fresh water for animals to drink from or bathe in. • Have some ‘wild’ natural spaces animals can use to burrow in or create habitat spaces from. You can also provide shelter spaces such as bird boxes or compost piles. Ensure that any feeders, baths, or habitats are sanitary and free of mold or other potentially harmful buildups. • Plant fruit trees and shrubs to share with local wildlife. Cover anything that you want to keep for yourself. But consider planting extra for birds and animals. • Before lighting fires with natural debris like leaves, twigs, and brush, check for any signs of animals or insects hiding inside or indications they may be using it for shelter. Do the same before cutting down trees or other growth.

SUPPORT WILDLIFE REHABILITATORS

Another way to help local wildlife is by supporting your local wildlife rehabilitation center. These organizations are often very busy during the winter months, with animals struggling too much to be released safely into the wild. You can donate canned food, blankets, other soft items, or your time to help care for the animals. Contact your local center and ask about their current needs. If you find a wild animal, DO NOT feed or water. Place the animal in a cardboard box, keep it in a quiet area and call one of the wildlife numbers listed here for further instructions and assistance. ✦

A Dad’s Eye View

Sleep-Overs

THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS BY RICK EPSTEIN

W

HEN MY 9-YEAROLD DAUGHTER Sally asks, “Dad, can Rachel and Brianne sleep over Saturday night?” it is not a simple yes or no question. It’s a proposition to be negotiated. “Doesn’t anybody sleep at home anymore?” I complain. Sally recognizes my usual opener. Although I know better than to admit it, a three-kid slumber party wouldn’t be too bad. Studies have shown that the more kids you have sleeping over, the stupider they act. Here’s the equation: Take a normal IQ and divide it by the number of sleep-over guests. Eight 13-year-old girls spent the night at our house a few months ago, and their effective IQs plunged so low that brain function was insufficient for lying down and closing eyes. “C’mon Dad, how about it?” Sally asks.

22

“How would your little sister fit into this?” Sally thinks a moment and says, “She could be with us and we’d be nice to her, but she’d have to sleep in her own bed.” This means that at bedtime little Wendy will be mortally wounded, but I know this is a generous compromise for Sally. “That’s fair enough,” I say. Now we have to negotiate the big factor – sleep-time. “Of course, I’ll want all of you quiet with the lights out at 11 o’clock,” I say, tossing out a number. “TWO o’clock would be more like it,” Sally says. Actually, 2 a.m. would be a big improvement over her big sister’s infamous all-night pep-rally, when half the eligible babysitters in town were dashing around the house shrieking and laughing until dawn. “Midnight,” I say, “Take it or leave it. I’m willing to negotiate, but you don’t have much to

bargain with; there’s nothing in this deal for me.” “You want to make your child happy, don’t you?” she asks. “Midnight, or we’ll pursue your happiness down some other path,” I say. “OK,” she says, and we shake hands on it. My kids think I’m kind of mean about sleep-overs, but compared to my own father, I’m a pushover. My dad felt about privacy the way kindergartners feel about candy. He could never get enough. Dad was never at ease when there was a visitor in the house. And to have a strange child sleep over, well, the kid might as well have been in the master bedroom, nestled in between husband and wife. And during the daytime, if I had more than one friend over, Dad would ask rhetorically, “So, when did you decide to have the party?” Although my dad didn’t like visitors, my stepmother did, and she required conversation from them as if they were HER visitors. And if they didn’t chat her up properly, there’d be hell to pay. She had been known to seize a taciturn teenage oaf by the sleeve, glare into his eyes, and demand through clenched teeth, “How are YOU today, TOM!” My pals gave her a 10 on the scariness scale,

which is why they only came over in pairs – for protection, like city cops. My little brother, like a smart groundhog, felt the chilly breezes from Dad, and our stepmother’s high-pressure zone with occasional lightning, and went underground with his social life. He never brought friends home, and our parents could only guess at what he was up to. So Sally has a stronger bargaining position than she realizes. I understand the need to be hospitable to my daughters’ friends, even though sometimes it’s hard to see the value of the unwholesome, immature companionship of their fickle, foolish peers. Kids who do not love them. Kids whose parents I don’t even know and who let them do God-knows-what whenever they want to. Kids who are going through changes like werewolves under a full moon. Kids who are so high on surging hormones they babble and hallucinate. Kids who can be as cruel and exclusive as Klansmen. Kids who work in betrayal and dumb stunts the way Calvin Klein works in cloth and thread. “I know it’s silly,” I confided to my wife, “But deep down, it’s hard for me to understand why the kids don’t want to spend their Saturday nights staying up late with us, eating popcorn and watching old movies.” “It’s called ‘getting a life,’ ” she said. ✦ Rick can be reached at rickepstein@yahoo.com.
