T

he holiday spirit is strong in the studios at the Midtown Arts Center. Eugene Ballet’s dancers are hard at work rehearsing for six—three matinees and three evening— performances of Artistic Director Toni Pimble’s The Nutcracker with Orchestra Next at the Hult Center. Your favorite characters from the show are here to share with you some magical moments to look out for on the Silva Concert Hall stage! Herr Drosselmeyer, The Nutcracker’s magical toy maker, eagerly awaits the Stahlbaum’s annual Holiday Party this December. It’s the perfect event of the season to show off the endless tricks up his sleeve, spoil children rotten with gifts, and perhaps even set a magical adventure in motion. “My newest inventions, a Mechanical Doll and Jack in the Box, will absolutely DELIGHT the guests at the party this year,” Drosselmeyer excitedly proclaimed. “I’m still working out some kinks... but they should be up to snuff in no time! Winking his unpatched eye, he mused, “Frau Stahlbaum and the Governess tell me that their darling Clara has been exceptionally good this year. Perhaps I will give her my favorite toy from my shop—a Nutcracker like no other!” Clara shares the same uncontainable enthusiasm for the upcoming soirée, it is always her favorite night of the year. Not only does Clara get showered with gifts and adoration from her family and guests, but she also gets to spend time with Drosselmeyer’s charming nephew Hans. “I simply cannot wait for this year’s holiday festivities,” Clara exclaimed. “There is nothing like it! We eat all my favorite sweets from an abundant treat table, open splendid gifts, and dance the night away with my friends, my brother Fritz, and sometimes even Hans...” she said as she stared off wide-eyed. “What? A girl can dream!” Speaking of dreams, The Mouse King and his posse of Pirate Mice have been training relentlessly for when Clara falls asleep after the party and their battle with the Nutcracker can commence. The meddling mice plan to make a grand entrance on their mighty ship, the HMS Pimble, proudly named after Toni Pimble herself. “With the help of my lovely Lady Mice, we are sure to give Clara quite the fright,” the Mouse King said with a booming laugh. “If all goes according to plan...we should emerge victorious!” Want to see who wins the battle and meet the rest of The Nutcracker’s cast of beloved characters? Grab your tickets now online at eugeneballet.org/nutcracker or call the Hult Center at 541-682-5000. You won’t want to miss the Snow King and Queen swirling and twirling with their Snowflakes in the Winter Land or the majestic Sugar Plum Fairy dancing with her Cavalier in the Land of the Sweets! Student and youth tickets are just $15 and adult tickets start at $25.

Outside the dome.

Movie Night

Road Trip BY BONNIE L. HARRIS

I

’M ALWAYS CHEERING FOR the underdog, and this wonderful family film directed by Kyle Alvarez has been undervalued and undercut at every turn. And yet, Crater survived and has been appreciated because of its heartwarming story and its association with Shawn Levy, the producer of Stranger Things. CRATER Walt Disney Pictures, Rated: PG Streaming on Amazon

Disney Plus pulled the film from its platform because of the Hulu merger when so many movies were reshelved or tossed into the streaming market. Thank goodness it’s now available on Amazon and brings together a talented teenage cast for a road trip of a lifetime. But not just a get-in-the-car type of adventure, these teens live on the moon and have never been outside their containment dome. When Caleb’s father dies in a mining accident, he and his friends, Dylan, Marcus, and Borney, are determined to fulfill a dream before Caleb is shipped off to

another planet. All they have to guide them is an old map and stories Caleb can barely remember. They manage to steal a long-range rover with the help of Addison, a newcomer to the lunar colony. And during their 2-day trek, they overcome a dangerous loss of oxygen, discover a hidden supply depot, and see the big blue ball called Earth. At the same time, they discover their deepest secrets, they overcome hidden fears, and they share their heritage with Addison, who is shocked by

the unfair treatment of mining families. The third act twist is so unexpected, I was very surprised at the revelation and then, grab your Kleenex, the ending is simple, bittersweet, and wonderful. The big special effects are centered around the lack of gravity, but the futuristic devices and holograms are also pretty impressive. And Alvarez does a terrific job of letting teens be natural and playful so their friendships feel genuine. Grab the popcorn and settle in for a great film. ✦

FOR the PARENTS

Never Been Done NYAD Black Bear Pictures, Rated: PG Streaming on Netflix

C

OURAGEOUS, UNRELENTING, AND determined are all words to describe Diana Nyad, the famous long-distance swimmer who finally achieved her lifetime goal of swimming from Cuba to the Florida Keys in 2013. The new Netflix biopic, Nyad, dramatizes her life and the momentous swim, but it also highlights an annoying, unforgiving, and ill-tempered human being who isn’t very likeable. Instead of cheering for Nyad, I found myself rooting for her long-suffering best friend, Bonnie, played by Jodie Foster, and the team of volunteer experts who accompanied Nyad on the 103-mile swim. It’s a tedious film, as swimming 53 straight hours must have been, but it’s also peppered with the wrenching setbacks every time Diana failed and the drama of overcoming jellyfish, sharks, and the ocean itself. As with every inhuman quest, the question is always, why do it? Most biopics address the question from the

The quest ahead. athlete’s perspective, but Nyad never reaches an answer. Instead, the film nods at Diana’s failure to complete the swim when she was 28, her father’s unrealistic expectations, and a childhood trauma. The flashbacks and newsreel footage piece together Diana’s personality and career, but they can’t make up for the main character’s shallowness. I appreciated the history lesson, but not the film.

Cozy Gifts That Bring Holiday Joy Merge health education with adorable plushies and meet NERD BUGS! These cuddly organs, like hearts and intestines, might seem unusual, but they’re delightfully entertaining. Our reviewers giggled, examined each bug, and playfully tested sizes compared to their own bodies. And they quickly become lap companions during the afternoon video game sesh, eliciting laughter while subtly educating kids about anatomy in a fun, engaging way. https://nerdbugs.com/

Everything about the AUBABY BLANKET is comfort and coziness. Our two-year-old reviewer immediately curled the blanket in the crook of her neck, proclaiming, “soft!” then proceeded to wrap her baby doll with it. Quite an endorsement. AuBaby makes its blankets with zero chemicals, plant-based dyes and renewable fibers. The blankets are soft and durable. https://www.aubabyshop.com/

At first, I didn’t fully understand the YOTO PLAYER, but I’m all about tech promoting less screen time, so we gave it a try. Compact, adorable, and its card library with diverse audio content - stories, music, books - feels boundless. My tween adores its ‘sleepy stories’ for bedtime and indulges in audiobooks and curated music. Rechargeable, portable, and screen-free, the Yoto is a stellar option for tween listening. https://us.yotoplay.com/ Science, technology, engineering, art and math are all represented with the THEODORA GIRLS line of dolls. Five plush dolls each have a story to tell. Tyriqa is a problem-solving technologist. Although my two-year-old niece, Nico, can’t say “technologist,” she was instantly smitten with Tyriqa. Her mom feels good knowing Nico’s toys are inclusive, welcoming and empowering. https://theodoragirls.com/

The BUMPAS WEIGHTED PLUSHIE innovates by merging a weighted blanket’s comfort into plushie form, providing three pounds of distributed weight for deep pressure stimulation. Proven to enhance security, reduce stress, aid sleep, and induce calmness, its weighted arms offer realistic hugs. Even though our plushie is ostensibly for our tween (who loves it), I find myself hugging our Bumpas, “Zeek,” while I watch TV or work at my desk. This gift has appeal beyond the young ones in your life. https://mybumpas.com/

Creative Toys that Spark Joy

The BABABOO TREE HOUSE PLAY WORLD is bustling! With 31 pieces for endless fun, explorers thrive here, fostering creativity, concentration, and spatial understanding. Beautiful, highquality wooden toys cultivate imaginative play and enhance hand-eye coordination. The BaBaBoo world kept our reviewers totally engaged, building new stories and adventures for the adorable characters in this set. https://us.bababooandfriends.com/ The OTAMATONE is pure, quirky musical joy! Your kids likely know precisely what this is, thanks to TikTok. My reviewers were stoked and imagined their next viral video sensation. The touch-sensitive neck and simple interface make producing tunes a ton of fun. https://otamatone.com/ Who knew crochet was big with tweens and teens? With vibrant yarn and easyto-follow instructions, our reviewer was excited to get started with the WOOBLES CROCHET KIT. Perfect for beginners, the adorable amigurumi designs make crocheting addictive (and easy!). Each project has been started for you, which is usually the trickiest part. It’s more than a hobby; it’s a soothing, satisfying escape that sparks imagination and offers charming handmade companions. https://thewoobles.com/

If you have LEGO or other block fans in your hours, PIXBRIX is a great option for any pixel artist. My tween builder tried both the Dinosaur kits and the 1,500-piece assortment. A slight adjustment time with a new style of “brick,” but he got the hang of it quickly. Plus, with online templates, there’s endless inspiration. Build and dismantle effortlessly by hand or with the Pix Brix tool (sold separately). https://pix-brix.com/ I love the whole concept of SproutWorld’s patented plantable SPROUT PENCILS. While ordinary pencils might be a “meh” gift, these plantable pencils are extra special. Each one contains a seed capsule. When you’re done using it as a pencil, plant the stubs to grow flowers, herbs, or even trees! You can also personalize your chosen seed and design. The Sprout Pencils come in regular, colored and make-up liner styles. https://sproutworld.com/ SCENTCO SCENTED PENS AND PENCILS make homework so much more fun! Made from recycled newspapers, the Holiday Smencils 5-Pack offers five gourmet-scented pencils. Packaged in recyclable tubes with cute character caps, these No.2 graphite pencils feature scents like Candy Cane and Gingerbread. For more sparkle, the Holiday Glitter

Smelly Gellies 5-Pack includes scented gel crayons with cheerful fragrances like Winterberry. Also, explore the Candy Cane Gel Smens 4-Pack for scented clickable pens. https://scentcoinc.com/

PLAYMOBIL is always a hit! This season, familiar friends like Mickey Mouse and Winne the Pooh ignite creativity in young builders. Add unicorns, rainbows, and a castle; you’ve got imaginative designs that captivate kids and encourage fine motor skills. Our preschool reviewers (ages 2 and 4) were completely enthralled with the new sets and played for a long time in their own worlds.. Playmobil’s new “My Figure” sets bring even more creative characters to the stories kids create. Elephant’s Trunk or https://www.playmobil.us/ The WOODLAND CREATURE CREATION KIT lets your budding engineer transform natural elements into whimsical wooden creatures by foraging wood and leaves using the provided hand drill and connectors. My tween could easily follow the booklet’s instructions for five enchanting animal designs but also created new creatures of his own. Ideal for kids who love hiking or camping trips. https://www.adventuretowntoys.com/

There’s something meditative for my teenager about shooting a basketball. The DECO HOME ARCADE BASKETBALL GAME feels like a real arcade-quality game he can play in the garage. THE FORESTS OF THE SEA BY BECKY RAINES MUSEUM OF NATURAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY

Underwater Forests: Oregon’s Kelp Ecosystems

18

Kelp forests teem with life. On the seafloor, Giant Pacific octopuses, sea stars, and urchins crawl amongst the holdfasts. In the ocean waters, rockfish weave in and out of the kelp’s stipes and Pacific herring lay their eggs on the blades. On the surface, sea lions and grey whales hunt shrimp and fish, looking for food hidden by the kelp. Above the waters, cormorants and puffins fly, diving down to eat small fish that collect amongst the floats. Oregon has lots of vibrant forests—we can walk under towering trees, watch squirrels scamper and salamanders run, and listen to birds and insects chirp. It’s harder for us to explore Oregon’s underwater forests, filled with sea creatures and kelp. Next time you’re at the beach, see if you can spot the patches of dark green that mark the kelp floats on top of the waves. Imagine the waters underneath, filled with life! ✦

MAGINE YOU ARE STANDING on the Oregon beach. You hear the seagulls honking above you and feel cold sand squishing between your toes. Rocks, both large and small, are sprinkled around the shoreline like chocolate chips in a cookie. Now you’re swimming out into the ocean. The water is chilly, biting at Dive deeper at your skin. The waves are rough. You begin to feel slimy leaves against your body. On top of the waves float green bulbs the size of baseballs. Above you, cormorants and seagulls are at the Museum of Natural flying, occasionally dipping down to search for food. and Cultural History, You have reached a kelp forest. Kelp forests are areas of now on view! the ocean dense with a macroalgae called kelp. In Oregon, our forests are full of a species called bull kelp. Bull kelp reaches from the bottom of the ocean, where holdfasts anchor them to a rock, all the way to the surface, where their floats keep them near the light. Bull kelp can grow up to 100 feet tall!

INDOOR ENTERTAINMENT FOR FAMILIES BY TAJ BARNHART MORGAN

E

NJOY THE REGION’S VIBRANT performing arts scene at shows and movies catering to families and younger audiences or even produced by the youth themselves. Here is some entertainment kids will love! (We recommend speaking directly with box offices for specific age and content recommendations.)

COTTAGE GROVE

Take the kids to Cottage Theatre’s “Elf The Musical,” adapted from the hilarious 2003 film, “Elf.” Before the show, explore Cottage Grove’s historic downtown decorated for the holidays and do some shopping at the local boutiques. The show runs December 1 – 23. Also in Cottage Grove is Storybook Theatre, with performing arts classes and

camps for children. Check their calendar for upcoming events, and possibly a winter acting camp!

EUGENE

Eugene shines with its many shows, stages and theater schools for aspiring performers and enthusiastic audiences. One star is The John G. Shedd Institute for the Arts, known for its musicals, live music and academy. Made for the preschool and elementary crowd, The Shedd’s “The Magical Moombah” productions are full of fun, fantasy and engaging interactions. “Under the Big Top!” is the “Moombah” theme for February 9-10. Two youth performances will be on stage at The Hult Center for the Performing Arts this December — Xcape Dance Academy winter student showcase on December 7, and Shasta Middle School’s annual band and choir winter concert on December 11. “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban” will play to the accompaniment of Eugene Symphony’s live orchestra December 15-16. Eugene Ballet’s “Nutcracker” is a great family tradition, December 21-26. Preschoolers will appreciate “Bluey’s Big Play,” a theatrical adaptation of the popular children’s TV show, January 16-17. Eugene Concert Choir will present their “All Americas” choir show as a special matinee for children on February 24. For this performance, local youth will participate

on stage and enjoy arts and crafts in the lobby pre-show. Ballet Fantastique will put their creative spin on “Cinderella: The Rock Opera”, fusing ballet with rock’n’roll February 29 - March 3. In the spring, The Very Little Theatre will be presenting “Alabama Story” about a struggle between a school librarian and a segregationist state senator in 1959. A children’s book is at the center, but the themes are weighty. This show runs March 29 – April 14. Explore the local youth acting and dance schools. Whether your child delights in being in the spotlight or prefers watching from the audience, these organizations offer plenty of performing arts opportunities. Upstart Crow has “Frozen Jr” on deck, while young aspiring dancers can explore Oregon Ballet Academy, Flex Studios, Vault Dance Studio and Halau Hula O Na Pua O Hawaii Nei. Eugene’s cinema is also an excellent source of indoor entertainment. The Art House (formerly the Bijou) screens a mix of artsy, cultural and educational films. Its sister theater, The Metro, offers blockbusters and indie films. And don’t miss the planetarium shows at the Eugene Science Center!

SPRINGFIELD

Pegasus Playhouse is a lively arts group catering to children with acting classes and camps — although adults participate too!

Rescue Spotlight

M

eet sweet, bonded pair, BRITTNEY (L) and BARRY (R)! These two are 11-years-young and looking for a quiet home to relax in. Barry is a brown and white mixed breed and Brittney is a black and white spotted pitbull mix. They are very calm, gentle dogs who would thrive in a family looking for companion dogs to keep them company. But don’t let their age fool you! They have plenty of pep in their steps and still down for walks and playtime! Barry is a pretty affectionate guy who gives kisses and loves butt scratches while Brittney is an outgoing pup who loves wrestling with her brother. Together, they make up a pretty cute duo who must be adopted together. These two are looking to be the only dogs in the home and might do ok with a cat after a slow introduction period. They prefer respectful kids who will be calm with them. These two are spayed and neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. They would thrive in a home with a big, comfy couch to lounge on and time outside to take in nature. Barry and Brittney promise to give so much love to their new family.

T

he Cat Rescue & Adoption Network presents TAJIN (L) and KITTYSAURUS (R), a bonded pair of young adult cats about 3 years old. Tajin is a super sociable and mellow orange and white tabby male, and “Kitty” is a sweet female with beautiful black panther fur. She’s a little shy at first but warms up quickly in a calm, quiet home. These two darlings are full of love and cuddles, and like to sleep with you at night. They will make great companions for someone looking for mellow, quiet cats to chill with. They have been altered, vaccinated, microchipped, and are negative for FIV & FeLV. To meet these kitties, please call 541-2254955 option 1, or visit our website at CatRescues.org
