he senior running back from San Diego, Calif., will top the Bulldogs’ all-time rushing list this year barring injury and put on a show against Weber State last week, racking up 123 yards and two first half touchdowns in Fresno State’s 37-10 win. The balance Rouse adds to Derek Carr’s passing attack will be even more dangerous in new head coach Tim DeRuyter’s up tempo spread offense. On the other side of the line of scrimmage, Michael Clay saw limited action last week due to the Ducks’ rout but still managed to scoop up a fumble and tally three tackles. As Arkansas State attacked the corners with screen routes in the first half, Oregon’s cornerbacks saw more action than the linebackers. But Clay, ranked second in the Pac-12 last year with nearly nine tackles per game, figures to still get his.

n this class, we will critically examine some of the US wartime emergency detentions/deportations that have occurred since the beginning of the 20th century. We will start our analysis from the Palmer Raids (1919-1920). A few decades later, after the attacks on Pearl Harbor, Japanese-Americans were targeted and as a result over 110,000 individuals were placed in internment camps. With the beginning of the Cold War, the loyalties of Communists and Chinese Americans were questioned. After the attacks of 9/11, Arabs/Muslims and Muslimlooking populations became victims of racial profiling. Thousands were detained and kept in high security jails within the US without any connection to terrorism. In addition, several hundred individuals languished at Guantanamo and at several secret prisons throughout the world.

If Thomas touched the ball 25 times a game, he actually might score six or seven touchdowns. Currently, he ends up in the endzone once every five times he touches the ball, and maybe the biggest reason he’s the Ducks’ Heisman favorite is that he already has the media on his side. Sports Illustrated has him right up there with Matt Barkley, and if Oregon outguns USC later in the year, the hype will be simply too much to ignore. History’s on his side, too. Five sophomores have won the award in the last five years, and when’s the last time a true freshman won the award? Never.

Not once in 77 years. Mariota will get his chance down the road, but this year Thomas has the inside track.

Winning the Heisman Trophy is all about visibility. Sorry, but no one from Conference USA is taking home the hardware this year. And while the Ducks’ games seem to be on ESPN almost every other week, it is a different visibility I am talking about. In football, you can’t look sexy without the ball in your hands; it’s why offensive lineman aren’t part of the Heisman fraternity. Running fast, throwing far and busting tackles wins the prize. The Ducks offense is built for these types of highlights — only problem is, you have to share the love. De’Anthony Thomas makes linebackers look silly, but he only gets to do it a few times a game. Kenjon Barner runs roughshod over safeties, but with Thomas and the plethora of other weapons around, he won’t get the rock enough to get votes for the bronze stiff-arm. Who gets to touch the ball every play? Yep, Marcus Mariota. He gets the option to run, pass, hand off on every down, and even if a teammate and vote-splitter takes it to the house, Mariota is the one getting it to them. That’s why if a Duck wins the Heisman, it will be the flying Hawaiian.

After losing lavasier tuinei, the ducks were looking for their next go-to wide receiver. It

was Portland native Keanon Lowe who stepped out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

T

hird and long — the ultimate test for a quarterback. The opposition knows the pass is coming. The defensive ends are guaranteed their target is looming with his eyes down the field. Cornerbacks and safeties know the ball will be coming their way soon enough, and this is the perfect opportunity for an interception.

After being sacked just two plays earlier, Ducks’ starting quarterback Marcus Mariota was handed his first big exam on Oregon’s first offensive set, faced with third and 15. All of Autzen was fixed on how the young Hawaiian would perform in this jam. He passed, both the test and the ball, for a gain of 21 yards and a first down.

The most unexpected part of that play wasn’t who threw the pass for the Ducks, or even that this fresh, unknown commodity that is Mariota sailed such an easy pass in a crunch situation.

The real revelation was the receiver, Keanon Lowe, who’s been under fans’ noses the whole time.

On a team that pulls from the talent-rich pools of Southern California and the Lone Star State, Keanon Lowe is one of only two offensive starters from the state of Oregon.

Despite being a track and football star at Portland’s Jesuit High, Lowe was just another name in the bag full of receivers the Ducks entered the 2012 offseason with.

After the departure of Lavasier Tuinei and injuries to Justin Hoffman, one of the most-talked about questions heading in last Saturday’s season opener was who would be among the top pass-grabbers for the Ducks this season.

Josh Huff was the only predicted sure thing. Who else would be listed on Chip Kelly’s depth chart? QB-turned-WR Daryle Hawkins was a popular pick, as was senior Rahsaan Vaughn. Maybe one of the big-name redshirts from last year – now-transferred Tacoi

Sumler, B.J. Kelly or Devon Blackmon? Lowe wasn’t among the field of possibilities in most conversations.

“It has been a learning process ever since I got here,” said Lowe.

“But now everything has come together, and I am excited about my opportunities.”

The opportunities Lowe speaks of are the ones most pundits and fans surrounding the Ducks football program would never have guessed he would have. But that changed when Kelly named Lowe, a sophomore, a starter at wideout.

“I have always had the respect from my teammates, and that is all that really matters,” Lowe said. “The media had kind of overlooked me, and it is funny now that you guys (media) want to talk to me.”

With a tie for a team high in receptions with De’Anthony Thomas in the opener against Arkansas State, the media could want to talk to Lowe much more this season.

After having never caught a pass in a game before, Lowe totaled 34 yards last Saturday, including the aforementioned third-down grab and then three more, all in a row, on the Ducks’ fourth scoring drive. And that

was just the first quarter. The starters didn’t even make it to halftime for the Ducks.

As the season continues and the first-string plays most if not all of the game, Lowe will have even more chances to prove himself a reliable target, one that wasn’t seen coming.

If the fact he is from Oregon and was, for the most part, neglected in the starters’ conversation wasn’t enough, Lowe is not your prototypical receiver. He stands just 5-foot-9 and weighs 181 pounds. And despite the notion that speed kills in the Ducks’ offense, at the receiver position, this doesn’t always ring true. In a scheme emphasizing speed around the edge, receivers are asked to be excellent blockers, something most guys Lowe’s size would have trouble with. Being named a starter in Kelly’s offense means the coaches didn’t see it that way.

“It goes back to the way I have always played,” Lowe said. “In high school, I was real physical on defense and offense, and I have tried to carry that over to college. Whether I am 5-foot-9 or 6-foot-4 doesn’t matter to me.” by jackson long

why the bulldogs will beat the ducks Fresno state has a new coach in tim deruyter and

a brand-new attitude. They know beating Oregon will be an uphill battle, but they’re ready for the challenge.

Each week during football season we will feature an essay from the opponent’s student newspaper on how Oregon will lose. This week’s edition is from Ricardo Cano, from Fresno State’s The Collegian.

Under former coach Pat Hill, Fresno State at one point in time was considered to be the gutsy, courageous (and sometimes naïve) Football Bowl Subdivision underdog with a penchant for facing “Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere.”

Those days are long gone, along with the predictability of a prostyle offense and a conservative 4-3 defense that led to frustration in fans and declining support for Hill. It ultimately led to his departure. Under first-year coach Tim DeRuyter, Fresno State operates under a different mantra these days: “Fast, Physical, Fanatical.”

And the Bulldogs showed all of the above during last Saturday’s 37-10 win against Weber State.

Granted, it was against an FCS opponent. And granted, the ‘Dogs face much, much (much!) stiffer competition this week when they head over to Autzen Stadium to square off against BCS royalty.

But these aren’t your everyday ‘Dogs. Not anymore.

When Fresno State debuted its no-huddle spread offense last Saturday, it unveiled a unit enamored with the poise and spontaneity it desperately longed for. There were no bubble screens to wide receivers, short, lateral passes or runs up the middle from the I-formation. It was sporadic, unfiltered, quick and to-the-point offensive execution that exploited the talents of an explosive athletic bunch — abilities that weren’t really showcased in last year’s schemes.

the spread and quarterback Derek Carr and running back Robbie Rouse has proven to be a fitting one. It also doesn’t hurt that the Bulldogs return key cogs in their new 3-4 defense, a unit that held Weber State to 274 total offensive yards. Safety Phillip Thomas, linebacker Shawn Plummer, and defensive end Anthony Williams returned this year after missing all of last season either due to injury or suspension.

But being realistic, Fresno State’s defense will probably face its stiffest test in this week against Oregon and its slew of athletes. Containing freshman quarterback Marcus Mariota is a formidable task in itself. Judging from Oregon’s team scrimmage and its season opener, the dude has game-breaking speed.

The type of speed that makes you feel he’s playing an NCAA Football ‘13 game against some generic FCS West team on ‘freshman’ difficulty with every thinkable handicap on.

But beyond all the natural talent and raw ability he may have, Mariota is no Carr. Not yet at least. While he might be dubbed ‘Oregon’s future,’ he has yet to really solidify himself in the present as a signal-caller that is as reliable and as well polished as Carr, who threw for 3,544 yards and 26 touchdowns last season.

It’s definitely going to be an uphill battle for the ‘Dogs. If Fresno State has a chance to win, it will need to play with the same tempo, the same voracity, that Oregon’s spread-option attack is used to playing with.

Should Fresno State win, it will be because its offense went toeto-toe against the only Pac-12 offense to average 40-plus points in consecutive seasons.
