Housed in one of the nation’s last remaining World War ii blimp hangars, and one of the largest wooden structures in the world, the Tillamook air museum is an unforgettable experience for both young and old alike. Visitors will be astounded by the museum’s display of over 30 meticulously restored vintage aircraft, such as the 1938 Bellanca air Cruiser, the P-38 lightning, the P-51 mustang, and many more. experience life as a jet pilot by climbing into the cockpit of the museum’s many aircraft trainers, and find out more about aviation history in the museum’s free theater. Tillamook, Oregon Phone: (503) 842-1130 Website: tillamookair.com Munson Creek Falls Prepare yourself for a spectacular view while visiting munson Creek Falls at munson Creek Falls State Park. Favored for its accessibility and height, munson Creek Falls is an impressive waterfall with a stunning 266-foot drop, making it one of oregon’s largest falls and certainly one of the most beautiful. The base of the waterfall can be approached by following the lower trail, which is a relatively simple half mile stroll. Gorgeous views can be found at the end of the lower trail, as well as a convenient picnic area. The more strenuous upper trail offers many picturesque sights along the way, leading up to a breathtaking view at the summit. While spring and fall are the more favored times to visit, all seasons present their own unique splendor. The munson Creek Falls and the trails that accompany it are appropriate for children and adults of all ages. Location: Tillamook; 7 miles south of Downtown Tillamook

Tillamook County Pioneer Museum No visit to Tillamook is complete without stopping by the Tillamook County Pioneer museum. The building itself is a significant piece of history and once served as the Tillamook County courthouse. Now it is home to over 35,000 items and 10,000 photographs documenting Tillamook County’s history. Complete with multiple replica rooms and artifacts belonging to the very first Tillamook Bay residents, the North oregon Coastal indians and the early pioneer settlers, it feels as if one has traveled back in time. The Tillamook County Pioneer museum also includes two libraries dedicated to Tillamook County history, which allows guests to do

Cape Meares Lighthouse – Octopus Tree amidst the beauty that can be found at the Cape meares Scenic Viewpoint, visitors will

also find a tiny wonder known as the Cape meares lighthouse. This truly unique lighthouse was built in 1889 and proudly bears the title of the shortest lighthouse in oregon. at only 38-feet-tall, the Cape meares lighthouse may not be colossal in size, but it is a delightful sight to see nonetheless. Visitors and especially lighthouse collectors will find it impossibly difficult to pass up the interpretive gift shop that accompanies the Cape meares lighthouse. admission to the lighthouse is free and it is handicap accessible, although visitors should be advised that the trail up from the lighthouse is moderately steep. Before leaving the park, take the short trail that leads to the enormous Sitka spruce

Beginning in downtown Tillamook, the Three Capes Scenic loop offers some of the most beautiful views along the oregon coast. The relatively short voyage gives tourists the ability to explore the coast while observing a variety of landscapes. Just short of 40 miles, the drive takes travelers west of Tillamook, along an easy to follow signed and paved route. Following signs from Tillamook to the Three Capes Scenic loop, visitors are guided along Tillamook Bay and Bay ocean Spit, which leads up to Cape meares loop road and is followed by a gorgeous view of the forested landscape. The route continues to oceanside, showcasing a spectacular ocean view like no other, and then curves through Netarts Bay to Cape lookout. From Cape lookout road, travelers are taken through Sandlake’s dunes, displaying the cliff side scenery of kiwanda State Park. From here, the route continues through Pacific City and is bordered by more ocean scenery. Clear weather provides the best views along the Three Capes loop, but all seasons can be appreciated. To make the most of it, travelers should plan to spend the day exploring the Three Capes loop, as there are a number of historical sites, as well as numerous state parks and recreational hot spots along the route.

known as the octopus Tree. The 50-foot base of this peculiar shaped tree branches upward and has taken on tentacle like qualities. once serving as an indian ceremonial tree, the giant Sitka spruce is believed to have been purposely shaped this way during its formative years. as one of the great wonders of the world, the octopus Tree is a must-see historical site. The tree is located approximately 600 feet from the Cape meares Scenic Viewpoint. The park is free and open daily from 7am-dusk. about the history of railroading and the local landscape. oregon Coast Scenic railroad provides a breathtaking 1 ½ hour roundtrip coastal ride, which departs from both Garibaldi and rockaway. Special event train rides and dinner train rides are also offered for those looking to celebrate in style. enjoy a four-course meal on the three hour dinner train as you travel along Tillamook Bay, the Pacific ocean, and Nehalem Bay. all ages are welcome and indoor and outdoor seating is available on both the regular coastal excursion and the dinner train. The Center now houses impressive displays of both antique and present day quilts, which draw in visitors from all over the world. The latimer

Center’s collection includes textile art from the mid-19th century, in addition to clothing pieces and various textile tools. 1930s-1940s crochet work can be found, as well as 1950s hand-woven textiles, and a growing collection of indigo. Demonstrations in weaving, spinning, and other textile arts are available, plus a research library for guests. The latimer Quilt and Textile Center also hosts six noteworthy gallery exhibits each year. in the latimer Quilt & Textile gift shop, visitors will find an array of hand-made items, books, antique fabric, and other textile pieces. Tillamook Forest Center experience oregon’s forests with handson activities and interpretive exhibits at the Tillamook Forest Center. This impressive and sustainably built center is the largest forestbased learning center in the region. Plus, it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump from Portland. learn about sustainable forest management, the devastating Tillamook Burn and the reforestation efforts that have taken place since. Climb the Tillamook Forest Center’s 40-foottall replica of a forest fire watchtower, step out on the 250-foot-long pedestrian suspension bridge, or enjoy hiking the nearby forest and riverside trails. Bring along a picnic lunch and take advantage of the many picnic benches located all throughout the center, or simply take in the view of the northern Coast range mountains. Garibaldi Maritime Museum at the Garibaldi maritime museum, visitors will develop a deeper appreciation of the Pacific Northwest’s maritime heritage. Prepare to be transported back to the 18th century with tales of Captain robert Gray and his discovery of the Columbia. models of his historic vessels, the Columbia rediviva and the lady Washington, are on display, as well as an 8-foot replica of the Columbia’s figurehead. The impressive half model of the Columbia rediviva reveals how the ship was painstakingly prepared for its long journey. Staff members are charmingly dressed in traditional 18th century maritime attire and are available to aid children with the numerous

room and visitors instantly feel a sense of tranquility and are enchanted by the building’s charm. Guests are invited to have a seat at the tasting bar and sample the many fine wines of the Nehalem Bay Winery, along with complimentary Tillamook cheese and crackers. look no further for good company and exceptionally delicious wine. Quilt Trail learn about Tillamook County’s remarkable heritage by following the Tillamook County Quilt Trail. The self-guided trail is fun for the whole family and begins at the Tillamook area Chamber of Commerce building, which displays a large wooden block painted in a quilt pattern. This unconventional type of trail highlights Tillamook County’s extraordinary heritage, while also drawing attention to the history of quilting in the Northwest. 16 barns and buildings of historical significance can be found along the trail, each marked by an identifying quilt block. The Tillamook County Quilt Trail makes for an enjoyable drive around the Tillamook area and an educational experience that is like no other in the Northwest. The quilt blocks can be found

throughout central Tillamook County, off of Tillamook on Highway 101, Highway 6, Wilson river loop and mcCormick loop. Started in 2010, the ever expanding “Walk our Block” quilt trail is an additional self-guided tour that includes 81 different buildings within downtown Tillamook. The “Walk our Block” tour started as a trail of 30 quilt blocks but has quickly grown to meet the demands of local businesses wishing to be included in the trail. With an identifying quilt block on each building, the “Walk our Block” tour gives visitors an opportunity to explore the remarkably unique downtown area of Tillamook, while also learning about the history of quilting. Plaques can also be found at each building along the trail, chronicling the building’s history and its significance to the growth of Tillamook. a fun stroll for everyone from history buffs to quilt enthusiasts. maps can be found at the Tillamook area Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center. Stroll along any one of Tillamook County’s numerous beaches and prepare to bask in the calm atmosphere and tranquil breezes. Unlike other beaches which can become quite congested during summer months, the scenic and secluded Tillamook County beaches are oregon’s best kept secret. rockaway beach offers 7 miles of unspoiled sandy beaches to explore and multiple beach access points. manzanita Beach provides the perfect conditions for kite flying and has year round appeal. The small town of oceanside also has a lovely beach near Netarts Bay and is a popular spot for strolling. Some of Tillamook County’s other noteworthy beaches include: agate Beach, kiwanda Beach, manhattan Beach, Neskowin Beach, Short Beach, Short Sand Beach, and Sunset Beach. Spend the day at the beach strolling along, beachcombing, kite flying or bird watching, and then be sure to discover the local shopping scene that each unique beach town has to offer.

Neahkahnie Mountain rumored to be directly above the location where oregon’s first european settlers arrived, the Neahkahnie mountain trail has historical significance and a beautiful ocean view to boot. This 3-mile trail leads hikers across the Neahkahnie mountain and leads up to a gorgeous beach view in the Tillamook Bay region. The trail is located 28 miles north of Tillamook on the east side of Highway 101, and is open year round. Cape Meares Lighthouse & Wildlife Refuge With numerous trails throughout the park to explore, the Cape meares State Scenic Viewpoint has much to offer. Hikers of all skill levels will enjoy the breathtaking views and multiple historical sites located within the park, such as the Cape meares lighthouse, the arch rocks National Wildlife refuge, and the octopus Tree. The Cape meares State Scenic Viewpoint can be found 10 miles west of Tillamook.

Munson Creek Falls The trails near munson Creek Falls are a true hiker’s delight. Surrounded by western red cedar and Sitka spruce trees, the munson Creek State Natural Site has two trails that lead to impressive views of oregon’s largest waterfall, munson Creek Falls. The relatively straightforward trail at the base of the falls is around ¼ mile and showcases the 266-foot waterfall, cascading over multiple rocky tiers. The more challenging upper trail provides a slightly better view and is around 3/8 of a mile, complete with wooden walkways and a viewing platform. munson Creek Falls is located 7 miles south of Tillamook and is accessible year round Bay Ocean Spit once the site of an exclusive coastal resort, the Bay ocean Spit located on Tillamook Bay has changed significantly. originally the little known town of Bayocean was the town of big dreams and development, built on the spit between the Pacific ocean and Tillamook Bay, but the doomed town eventually succumbed to the ocean in the 1930s. Though the houses and buildings that once existed have washed away, outdoor enthusiasts still value the land found at the Bay ocean spit. Hikers will enjoy the 9-mile round trip jaunt along Tillamook Bay, leading to the tip of the peninsula. To find the Bay ocean spit, take State route 131 (Third Street westbound) and turn right just west of the Tillamook river toward Cape meares. Take the dike road to the parking lot. Kings Mountain Trail This popular trail is located on Highway 6, just east of Tillamook. offering a challenging hike with a steep incline, the king mountain Trail is around 3 miles to the summit and rewards hikers with both mountain and coastal views. advanced hikers will enjoy the 2776 climb to the top but should remain cautious, as the trail can be dangerous in certain areas. Though the trail is accessible year round, spring, summer, and fall are ideal times to visit. Camping is also available nearby at the elk Creek Campground. Submitted by Josiah Darr it’s easy to make the argument that Tillamook is the epicenter of fishing in the state of oregon. The variety and opportunity of fisheries in Tillamook leaves the average fishermen scratching their head. Not because they’re trying to find fish to catch, but because they don’t know where to start. With five salmon and steelhead choked rivers pouring into world famous Tillamook Bay all within 10-minutes of each other and the Nestucca and Nehalem Bay both within 20-minutes, to a fisherman, being in Tillamook is like being a kid in a candy shop. all that is left for the fishermen to do is choose their favorite flavor, depending on the season, and taste the sweet rewards. When the summer sun is high in the sky and the Pacific ocean cooperates, the near shore ocean fishing out of Tillamook bay is world renown. rockfish, ling Cod, Sea Bass, Chinook and Coho are in great numbers within casting distance of the jetties at Tillamook Bay. For those that want to ride the swells, there are plenty of charter boats that can give a large group of people fun and fishing all day. if running your own boat into the big blue sea is your cup of tea, Tillamook has very well maintained boat launches that will get you right out to the jaws where you can cross the bar and enjoy the navigating the world’s largest ocean stuffed full of fish. as the days get shorter and the nights get colder, Tillamook’s

most famous fish begin returning to Tillamook Bay and the local rivers. Fall Chinook are the largest and meanest salmon that graces the oregon Coast over the course of a year. With fish anywhere from 20 to 60 pounds flooding in and out of the bays and rivers with every tide, the chance at a true fish of a lifetime is possible every time you put a line in the water. These giant salmon have been immortalized in sepia photos from the good ol’ days in almost every tackle shop in the area, but these ancient beasts are still around and will put any fishermen, lucky enough to tie into one, to the brink. over the last few years the Wild Steelhead Broodstock Program has sent the numbers of winter steelhead pouring into the local rivers through the roof from December through april. These beautiful fish often are seen with a bit of a mythological ambiance and to many fishermen, are the crown jewel of the oregon Coast. They can be pursued from the bank on every local river at one of the dozens of prime access points, but those who love to float the rivers have a golden opportunity. There are literally dozens of floatable stretches of river in the Tillamook area that will take boaters through some of the most beautiful coastal canyons in North america. For those who love adventure and a challenge, Tillamook winter steelhead are a dream come true. Whether it be ocean fishing, exploring the banks or floating the rivers, Tillamook has what the fishing enthusiast is after. and for those who have the sense of adventure and want to see something new every day, there are endless possibilities to explore. if you enjoy just being on the water or you’re a hardcore fishermen, Tillamook is the place to be in the state of oregon and should be experienced by anyone who loves to wet a line. Crabbing The Tillamook, Netarts, and Nehalem Bay are nature’s gift for these sports in the Tillamook area. all three bays are stocked with Dungeness and red rock crab year round; although it is said the best time to go crabbing are the months ending in “r.” Whether you are an experienced crabber going out in a boat or the novice who wants to crab from the shore (or rent a boat), you are sure to have a great time in Tillamook. You can find licenses and all the equipment you need at any of the locations below.

Clamming The shores and sand bars of Tillamook and Netarts bay are known for exposing plentiful clam beds during low tides. in these bays you can find many species such as quahog, littleneck, cockles, gapers, and even muscles in both bays. in Netarts Bay, on rare occasion, you can find the geo-duck clam. The Goeduck is by far the largest and most prized of the sport in the Tillamook area. Clamming requires little equipment but much technique in many cases; it would be very beneficial for you to research and/or contact Tillamook Sporting Goods before setting out.

ally every species of ducks in western North america are common. The Great Blue Herons are year-round residents at Tillamook Bay. a drive along Fraser road west of Tillamook off the Netarts Highway offers a spectacular stretch of roadside birding for herons, ospreys, raptors, and rafts of ducks during migrations. Bayocean Peninsula, which separates Tillamook Bay from the Pacific ocean, offers a five mile long wild forested sandspit, luring the casual hiker to a rich variety of viewpoints and birding opportunities. The Three Capes scenic drive offers river and bayside birding opportunities, access to Bayocean Peninsula, the peregrines, gulls, and murres of Cape meares. Peregrine falcons nest near the Cape meares lighthouse, which offers a spectacular view of Pyramid rock and its murres and puffins, as well as views of the Three arch rocks.

Sand Lake Dunes

Sand Lake Dunes Gorgeous coastline dunes can be found at Sand lake, an extremely popular all-terrain vehicle (aTV) and buggie hot spot. The U shaped dune offers both forest surroundings and Pacific ocean views. The local campground fills up quickly in the spring and summer months, but a recreation pass for camping on the beach is also available. Three day holiday weekends are especially packed and require a $10 permit, which can be purchased at the Hebo ranger District or Sand lake Grocery. only 1,200 permits are available and are required for each street legal, licensed offhighway vehicle. Bird Watching Submitted by Neal Lemery Tillamook Bay, the second largest estuary on the oregon Coast, and the five rivers that flow into it offer some of the best birding opportunities in the 12 | RECREATION

Pacific Northwest. With its abundant mix of fresh and salt water, and the fact that half of the bay are exposed mudflats at low tide, entices a wide range of migratory bird species to visit. The bay’s five rivers are not only famous for their salmon fishing, but also for their many miles of estuaries and sloughs, prime country for kayaking and roadside birding, within a mile or two of Highway 101. Boat ramps are plentiful and are in the midst of miles of sloughs and river channels, offering the birder a wilderness birding experience on every river, from Garibaldi on the north end, around to the south end of Bayocean, at the hamlet of Cape meares. Cape meares lake offers good sightings of most every shore bird, including some pelagic species. according to the 102nd Christmas Bird Count there were approximately 7,500 waterfowl of 34 species in and around Tillamook Bay. Bald eagles, great blue herons, snowy egrets, ospreys, brown pelicans, Black-bellied Plovers, Semipalmated Plovers, Whimbrels, Sanderlings, Dunlins, and Short-billed Dowitchers and virtu-

The early morning sun is coming up across the lake, and the kayaks glide effortlessly across the smooth water creating a sensation of sliding on ice. Nearby, the hot pink water lilies gather in clusters eager to rise out of the water to rest atop their green lily pads. Simultaneously, high up the river, standing on a large moss-covered boulder, a small group, bundled head to toe in neoprene, peer into the icy turquoise water scouting a rushing class iii rapid, assessing their next move. Welcome to the Tillamook County Water Trail (TCWT) nestled between the north and south boundaries of Tillamook County on the North oregon Coast. Not a traditional contiguous trail, the TCWT encompasses five estuaries - Nehalem Bay, Tillamook Bay, Netarts Bay, Sand lake estuary and Nestucca Bay. The TCWT consists of more than 200 miles of rivers, sloughs, and bays all feeding directly into the Pacific ocean. local lore attributes the word “Tillamook” with the lyrical definition of “The land of many Waters.” The TCWT boasts considerable natural and historic assets along its numerous waterways. These scenic trails wind through some of North america’s richest timber and dairy land. Native vegetation line the banks, local birds use a variety of habitats as rookeries, while migrating species like the previously endangered aleutian Canada Goose use the water trail area as an important resting spot on the Pacific Flyway. fish use the woody debris-laden sloughs and rivers and the many acres of wetlands for critical backwater rearing habitat. in 2004 a stakeholder committee, led by the Tillamook estuaries Partnership (TeP) – a non-profit dedicated to the conservation and restoration of Tillamook County’s estuaries and watersheds in their entirety - convened to facilitate the formation of a countywide system of water trails. TeP and the community recognized that to build a water trail around the County’s abundance of waterways, would create opportunities to encourage exploration, education, and stewardship to the locals as well as visitors. The culmination of the grass roots efforts was the printing of the Nehalem Water Trail and the Tillamook Bay Water Trail guidebooks. The guidebooks are as graphically stimulating as educational. appropriate access points are highlighted, safety, and leave no trace information is imparted, suggested day trips are outlined and stimulating tidbits of local lore are conveyed in one concise, eye-catching document. at the heart of the guidebook are detailed maps that act as aids for visitor and residents alike as they plan their non-
