HIKING

With the Coast Range running along its eastern edge, and headlands breaking up its coastline, Tillamook County offers a variety of trails for hikers at every level. Here you will find some of the more unique and picturesque hikes, but don’t forget to check out the three capes trails (pg.12) for some great ocean view hikes. Bay Ocean Spit Once the site of an exclusive coastal resort, the Bay Ocean Spit located on Tillamook Bay has changes significantly. Originally the little known town of Bayocean was the town of big dreams and development until the doomed town eventually succumbed to the ocean in the 1930s. Hikers will enjoy a wonderful 9-mile stroll down a service road to the tip to view the mouth of the Tillamook Bay, and will cross over to the beach for their final leg (be sure to look for the buoy on a stake that marks your trail back to the parking lot). To find the Bay

Cape Meares, Oregon Ocean spit take State Route 131 (Third Street westbound) and turn right just west of the Tillamook River toward Cape Mears. Take the dirt road to the parking lot. Oswald West State Park/Falcon Cove On the north end of the county, park at Oswald West State Park offers a north tail to Falcon Cove and a south trail to Devil´s Cauldron and Neahkahnie Mountain. Falcon Cove is a relatively easy hike involving a nearly 5-mile round trip with virtually no elevation change and great view. The south trail will take you on a 7.6-mile round trip, with a 1,700-foot elevation gain to the 1,631-foot summit of Neahkahnie Mountain. Don’t miss the quarter mile spur to grab a glimpse of Devil´s Cauldron. The south trail brings you back to Highway 101, where you will cross to the trailhead for Neahkahnie Mountain. kahnie Mountain trail has historical significance and a beautiful ocean view to boot. The 3-mile climb to the summit is steep, with the trail gaining 900 feet of elevation to an expansive view of the ocean and many miles of shoreline. If you like, you can continue another 2 miles to Oswald West State Park. The trailhead is located a few miles north of Manzanita on the east side of Highway 101, and is open year-round.

QUILT TRAIL Learn about Tillamook County’s remarkable heritage by following the Tillamook County Quilt Trail. The self-guided trail is fun for the whole family and begins at the Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce building, which displays a large wooden block painted in a quilt pattern. This unconventional type of trail highlights Tillamook County’s extraordinary heritage, while also drawing attention to the history of quilting in the Northwest. 16 barns and buildings of historical significance can be found along the trail, each marked by an identifying quilt block. The Tillamook County Quilt Trail makes for an enjoyable drive around the Tillamook area and an educational experience that is like no other in the Northwest. The quilt blocks can be found throughout central Tillamook County, off of Tillamook on Highway 101, Highway 6, Wilson River Loop and McCormick Loop. Started in 2010, the ever expanding “Walk Our Blocks” quilt trail is an additional self-guided tour that includes 81 different buildings within downtown Tillamook. The “Walk Our Block” tour started as a trail of 30 quilt blocks but has quickly grown to meet the demands of local businesses wishing to be included in the trail. With an identifying

Navigable Waters! quilt block on each building, the “Walk Our Block” tour gives visitors an opportunity to explore the remarkably unique downtown area of Tillamook, while also learning about the history of quilting. Plaques can also be found at each building along the trail, chronicling the building’s history and its significance to the growth of Tillamook. A fun stroll for everyone from history buffs to quilt enthusiasts. Maps can be found at the Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center.

WATERWAYS Submitted by the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership The early morning sun is coming up across the lake, and the kayaks glide effortlessly across the smooth water creating a sensation of sliding on ice. Nearby, the hot pink water lilies gather in clusters eager to rise out of the water to rest atop their green lily pads. Simultaneously, high up the river, standing on a large moss-covered boulder, a small group, bundled head to toe in neoprene, peer into the icy turquoise water scouting a rushing class III rapid, assessing their next move. Welcome to the Tillamook County Water Trail (TCWT) nestled between the north and south boundaries of Tillamook County on the North Oregon Coast. Not a traditional contiguous trail, the TCWT encompasses five estuaries - Nehalem Bay, Tillamook Bay, Netarts Bay, Sand Lake Estuary and Nestucca Bay. The TCWT consists of more

than 200 miles of rivers, sloughs, and bays all feeding directly into the Pacific Ocean. Local lore attributes the word “Tillamook” with the lyrical definition of “The Land of Many Waters.” The TCWT boasts considerable natural and historic assets along its numerous waterways. These scenic trails wind through some of North America’s richest timber and dairy land. Native vegetation line the banks, local birds use a variety of habitats as rookeries, while migrating species like the previously endangered Aleutian Canada Goose use the water trail area as an important resting spot on the Pacific Flyway. The threatened native Coho salmon and other fish use the woody debris-laden sloughs and rivers and the many acres of wetlands for critical backwater rearing habitat. In 2004 a stakeholder committee, led by the Tillamook Estuaries Partnership (TEP) – a non-profit dedicated to the conservation and restoration of Tillamook County’s estuaries and watersheds in their entirety - convened to facilitate the formation of a countywide system of water trails. TEP and the community recognized that to build a water trail around the County’s abundance of waterways, would create opportunities to encourage exploration, education, and stewardship to the locals as well as visitors. The culmination of the grass roots efforts was the printing of the Nehalem Water Trail and the Tillamook Bay Water Trail guidebooks. The guidebooks are as graphically stimulating as educational. Appropriate access points are highlighted, safety, and leave no trace information is imparted, suggested day trips are outlined and stimulating tidbits of local lore are conveyed in

one concise, eye-catching document. At the heart of the guidebook are detailed maps that act as aids for visitor and residents alike as they plan their non-motorized journeys along Tillamook County’s scenic shores. Find the guides online at gotillamook.com. A list of where to obtain the physical waterproof guides visit tbnep.org or stop by the Tillamook Area Chamber of Commerce.

WILDLIFE Tillamook County is blessed with an abundance of wildlife. Visitors and citizens alike have the opportunity to view, and take bounty of, this wildlife year round. One of the more spectacular sites beyond the bird watching opportunities is the sighting of Roosevelt Elk. These Pacific Northwest natives consistently show up in large number right along 101 at the Port of Tillamook Bay (pg. 34) for your viewing pleasure. Note: Be cautious and courteous to other drivers when pulling over or slowing down on highway 101. A trip to the coast wouldn’t be complete without digging for clams or trapping crab. Tillamook is home to four bays, each of which offers a different variety of bounty. Be sure to find out where to go and what to do to find these wonderful creatures throughout this guide. If you are going for the bounty be sure to visit Tillamook Sporting Goods (pg. 48) for all of your licenses and tags. Going home with a citation for unlawful actions is not the ideal addition to any visit.

Tillamook´s pioneers scaled steep, nearly impenetrable mountains in the mid-1800s to get here only to discover that most other people didn´t have the same burning desire and necessary dedication to reach the fertile, unspoiled country. Stuck in paradise without the means to import much-needed supplies, the early settlers of 1854 decided to build themselves a ship. They launched the Morning Star the following year in Tillamook Bay and used it for many years to export butter, potatoes, salmon, and other local products, as well as to bring back supplies and mail. By the time the City of Tillamook was incorporated in 1891, Tillamook County was becoming increasingly known for its fine cheddar cheese, the product of a recipe by Peter Duncan McIntosh, a transplant from Canada via Woodland, Wash., who had earned a reputation as the best cheese maker west of Wisconsin. Tillamook thrived through the early 1900s,

but reeled along with the rest of the country during the Great Depression of 1929-1933 until it experienced a boost in its economy and general morale with construction of Naval Air Station Tillamook, an enormous blimp base located south of the city limits. Today, Hangar B of the former naval air station, houses the Tillamook Air Museum, the largest free-standing, clear-span wooden structure in the world, covering more than seven acres and measuring 1,072 feet long, 296 feet wide and more than 15 stories high. Tillamook remains a community of dairy and timber workers, although the community is beginning to place a bigger emphasis on tourism with projects such as the Hoquarton Interpretive Park, which honors local history and the environment, and an in development city-owned, 45-acre park on the north end of town. The city´s biggest annual events remain the June Dairy Parade, Tillamook Rodeo, and Tillamook County Fair (pg 31).

Story by: Adam Sawyer I’m certainly no stranger to the Oregon Coast. Living in Portland, I’ve had many an occasion when a trip to the coast was just what the Doctor ordered. That being said, I had never taken the Three Capes Scenic Loop drive. I’ve enjoyed many of its highlights individually, but until recently never took the time to take it in it as its own adventure; to appreciate its merits as an experience unto itself. The loop is a 40-mile Scenic Byway that can take you anywhere from a handful of hours to a handful of lifetimes to explore. The drive is of course, scenic, and well worth an extended day long, or multi-day, trip just to drive it. But the real beauty of the loop is exposed when you park the car and explore some of the features along the way. These natural and man-made wonders dot the loop and anyone you talk to along the way is more than happy to share their favorites. The fact that it’s a loop means you can tailor you journey to start anywhere along the route and go in one of two directions; which is helpful. We decided to leave Tillamook heading south along the 101. It didn’t take long before we arrived at our first stop, Munson Creek Falls State Park. If ever there was a leg-stretch of less than a mile worth taking, this is it. From the trailhead, the short stroll to Munson Creek Falls is set amongst massive old-growth western red cedars and Sitka spruce that literally drip with moss and lichen. The falls are 319 feet of three-tiered, awe-inspiring, cascade goodness. They are the tallest in the Coast Range and perhaps the tallest in the state west of the Willamette River. Completely amped from that little diversion, we got back in the car and preceded south through farmlands and the small towns of Beaver, Hebo, and Cloverdale. Along the way we were treated to sightings of blue heron, peregrine falcon, and even a juvenile bald eagle, before arriving at the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge. If you consider wildlife viewing or sweeping ocean vistas enticing in the slightest, the Nestucca Bay National Wildlife Refuge should occupy a spot on your dance card. The Refuge supports several subspecies of geese including the world’s population of Semidi Islands Aleutian Canada geese. Viewing platforms and a short trail also provide visitors with potential glimpses of a wide array of wildlife, as well as Haystack Rock, Cape Kiwanda, and the Bob Straub State Park, our next destination. Story continued on next page >>> 2013 TILLAMOOK AREA VISITOR GUIDE | THREE CAPES | 13

At the Bob Straub State Park a pair of wonderful family-friendly hiking trails show off the beauty of the Pacific Ocean as well as the Nestucca River. Legendarily large Chinook salmon and harbor seals are commonly seen near the mouth of the Nestucca spit.

SY ciel downin

Katie and Jim, owners of the Cape Lookout Bed & Breakfast, gave us a tour of the lovingly maintained property that they call their home. Jim, a Chef by trade, turned his full attention to the B&B when business became so robust that Katie could no longer keep up alone. We all benefited from that decision. The breakfast end of a B&B doesn’t get much better than what we had the next morning; a complete four course meal that concluded with a smoked local ham, garden-fresh wilted spinach, and grilled tomato Benedict with rosemary roasted potatoes. g

Now paralleling the Pacific Ocean as we drove north, we were treated to a series of beautiful views before stopping at the Clay Myers State Natural Area at Whalen Island. This was special. Prior to stopping there, I had never heard of the place. But with the embarrassment of natural riches the Oregon Coast harbors, it’s understandable that a place like this might fly under the radar from time to time. A remarkable trail carves a path through a lush coastal estuarine ecosystem comprised of mixed woodlands, grasslands, fresh and saltwater wetlands, and a rare native dune sedgeland. My only regret here was not

Completely amazed by the unique Natural Area, we traded smiles, made plans to return, and loaded back into the car to continue up the coast. The route, now beautifully narrowed by encroaching old-growth trees, climbed into the Cape Lookout State Park. Here, yet another set of trails travels more than 8 miles through the popular campground and day-use area. Views abound, including the one from Anderson’s Viewpoint which looked down upon Netarts Bay and our home for the evening, the Cape Lookout Bed & Breakfast. PHOTO COURTE

Lunch was now on the agenda and Pacific City was a fine choice. We parked at Cape Kiwanda and first made our way down to the beach to take pictures of the Oregon Coast’s lesser known, albeit larger, Haystack Rock. We then ascended the sand dunes of Cape Kiwanda and watched as the tide assaulted the Cape in a combination of picture-worthy patterns. We bounced down the sand dunes and entered the Pelican Pub & Brewery for lunch proper. The aw a rd-w i nning beer of the Pelican is a draw for many, but the “beer cuisine” that was born there is its own draw.

scheduling in enough time to hike every inch of the trail system.

Well rested and very well fed, we continued our journey up the coast to the town of Oceanside. The charming town boasts some wonderful dining options, but at that moment we were quite taken care of in that department. Instead we were there to photograph the Three Arch Rocks and visit something that Jim had told us

With the last of the Capes under our belt, it was time to finish off the loop, but not before a quick stop at the Bayocean Peninsula County Park for our last chance to take in ocean views. Back on the road, the final stretch along Bayocean Road that leads into Tillamook is inspiring yet serene; a wonderful way to end our drive. SY ciel dow ning

We spent a short time in the car excitedly reviewing our pictures before heading to one of my personal favorite spots on the coast, Cape Meares. More trails, more life-affirming views, and even a lighthouse are all great reasons to stop here. But in addition to the lighthouse, Cape Meares has something else that won’t be found at any other stop along the loop, the Octopus Tree! The giant, multitrunked Sitka spruce remains a bit of a mys-

tery. Scientists aren’t completely sure why the tree formed in such a way, but wind, insects, and one particular Native American legend have all been offered up as probable causes.

about just that morning, a tunnel. A short walk along the beach that leaves from the Oceanside Beach State Recreation Site leads to a tunnel that goes through Maxwell Point and leads to the aptly named Tunnel Beach. Constructed by the Rosenberg family in 1926, the tunnel is still passable when the tide is low enough. Our timing was perfect that day as we managed to make it to the tunnel, snap some pictures, and made our way back to the beach as the tide was beginning to lap at our heels.

For me, the Three Capes Scenic Loop begs to be explored in every season, which I plan on doing. The main theme is the scenic drive, but it’s the stops along the way that made the experience. The food, the lodging, and the natural beauty we were able to take in by foot, the history, and the people we met along the way, all make the Three Capes Scenic Loop greater than the sum of its parts.

A Hidden Tunnel!”

Crabbing Netarts Bay

Travelers through Tillamook County tend to follow Highway 101 in a straight line along the coast. For the most part, that makes sense, as the route treats travelers to large swaths of scenic views. However, if you drive through Tillamook without taking a slight detour west, you will miss out on some of the best shoreline Tillamook County has to offer. Located along Highway 131, Oceanside and Netarts are two unincorporated villages due west of Tillamook about 10 miles. While Netarts hugs the bay of the same name, Oceanside is tucked up against Maxwell Point, overlooking the Three Arch Rocks and Pacific Ocean. Netarts is slightly working class in feeling, while Oceanside projects a more upscale vibe. Both communities, however, draw artists of all kinds, and both are off the beaten path. Oceanside is less commercial, with only a handful of businesses. Its big draw is the beach itself, along with the Three Arch Rocks - enormous sea stacks located about

a half-mile offshore - which were designated the first National Wildlife Refuge west of the Mississippi River. The rocks serve as home to Oregon´s largest breeding colony of tufted puffins, the largest colony of common murres south of Alaska, and is the only pupping site on the north Oregon coast for the federally threatened Stellar sea lion. While it is home to more businesses, Netarts isn´t particularly commercial in feeling either. Its restaurants and bars cater to tourists and locals equally.

WHERE TO START Start your day with a pastry and cup of coffee at Oceanside´s Brewin’ in the Wind, which offers seating with ocean views. Take a walk on the beach between town and the Three Arch Rocks. If the tide is low, you can walk around the tip of Maxwell Point to what feels like a secret beach on the other

side. Known as Tunnel Beach to some, it can also be reached by walking through a tunnel at the base of Maxwell Point. On the other side of the tunnel you will find a rockhounds dream beach with rocks galore and sea shells and agates found often. Have lunch at Roseanna´s Cafe, an Oceanside institution and what Frommer´s refers to as a “Scenic Loop legend.” Fresh seafood finds its way into many of the cafe´s menu items, while the view of the ocean is uninterrupted and dramatic. Head to Netarts and rent a boat and crab pots from Netarts Bay Garden RV Resort (pg 39), which is located on Netarts Bay. While most people are accustomed to Dungeness crabs, Netarts Bay is home to both Dungness and red rock crabs. Slightly smaller in size, red rock crabs have a sought-after taste of their own. Visit the Schooner Restaurant & Lounge (pg 45) for dinner on the deck near the outdoor mesquite grill. The Schooner, which has been a Netarts landmark for 60 years, features fresh, locally caught seafood. Wrap up your evening with a bonfire at Happy Camp, Netarts´ beach that starts at the bay, and winds north to Oceanside.

Wonders of Cape Kiwanda

Beach By Horseback

Pacific City residents seem to speak a language all their own. Visit this beach town in south Tillamook County, and you will hear terms like ¨gurdy,¨ ¨trawl,¨ and ¨double-ender,¨ all lingo spoken by dorymen. As home to the West Coast´s only commercial dory fleet, Pacific City is awash in the culture of those who plied the ocean waves in the flat-bottomed boats. Beginning more than 100 years ago, dory fishermen rowed from the beach at Cape Kiwanda past Haystack Rock to fish in often rough conditions. They chose that stretch of beach for its relative shelter, launching their boats directly from the shore. Today´s dorymen use motorized boats,

Haystack Rock Sunset

but still launch their crafts directly from the beach and brave choppy seas. Many are members of the Pacific City Dorymen´s Association. To celebrate the fleet, Pacific City hosts a Dory Days Festival each summer. Local businesses feature dory-themed items, such as the Pelican Pub & Brewery´s signature Doryman´s Dark Ale, and Doryland Pizza, located across the road from the beach. Each spring, Pacific City hosts a Blessing of the Fleet ceremony to honor those who died at sea. The Dorymen´s Memorial Wall, located in the parking area next to the beach from which dories still launch, commemorates local dories and their crews going back one century.

18 | PACIFIC CITY | 2013 TILLAMOOK AREA VISITOR GUIDE | GoTillamook.com

WHERE TO START Wake up in Pacific City to a cup of locally roasted coffee, including the Fogcutter and Five Rivers blends, at Stimulus Espresso Cafe (pg 34), which offers a spectacular view of the ocean and Haystack Rock. While you are at the beach, go for a hike up the face of Cape Kiwanda and take in the scenery of the Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area, where waves splash through openings in the headland´s limestone structure. If you visit at low tide, you can take in tide pools along the bottom of the Cape. Want a little bit more action? You can rent a sandboard at Cape Kiwanda RV & Resort (pg 39) to glide down the cape on, rent a surfboard and gear at Moment Surf Company to ride the waves, or hit the beach on horse back with Green Acres Beach & Trail Rides (pg 44). Go shopping in downtown Pacific City for antiques, gifts, home decor, and gifts. Browse through the various fine art galleries, and then stop by the local wine tasting room and lounge. Have lunch at one of a number of restaurants in downtown, or head back to the beach where you can eat lunch with an ocean view at the Pelican Pub & Brewery (pg 45). In addition to a full menu of sandwiches, salads and appetizers, the Pelican offers its own line of locally brewed, internationally award-winning beer. Spend the afternoon fishing on the Nestucca River, experienc-

ing a dory ride by chartering a fishing trip, kayaking on Nestucca Bay, renting an all-terrain vehicle and riding the dunes at Sand Lake Recreation Area, or golfing in nearby Neskowin. Find rentals to ride the sand at Sandlake Tsunami ATV Rental (pg 44). Have dinner at an area restaurant - there are several in nearby communities of Hebo, Cloverdale, and Neskowin - and then watch the surfers, jet-skiiers, and dories back at Cape Kiwanda before catching the sunset. If you are one of the many people who fly a plane into town, landing on the local airstrip, you can head home in the evening. If you drove to the area, stay the night at one of the area´s many motels, vacation rentals or bed-and-breakfast facilities.

You really can´t talk about Bay City without mentioning oysters. Those driving through the tiny town will notice heaps of white oyster shells between Highway 101 and Tillamook Bay, evidence of the oyster industry in the area. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Jesse Hayes began raising oysters in beds along the edge of the bay. To encourage greater consumption of the fruit of their labor, they started an annual oyster feed. It wasn´t, however, your average seafood feed. Organizers dug two 50-foot-long trenches in the ground, filled them with wood, set the wood alight, and let it burn overnight. The following morning, they covered the coals with seaweed upon which they layered oysters, and then more seaweed. People swarmed to the feed to devour the oysters and celebrate the bounty of Tillamook Bay. The event took on a carnival atmosphere until it fizzled out during World War II. Still, the consumption of oysters continued

unabated, which fueled the success of the local oyster industry, which was represented, for many years, by Hayes Oyster Company. Today, Pacific Oyster (pg 47) operates a plant on a pier on the west side of the highway. The facility offers visitors a look at oyster shuckers in action, as well as a market offering jars of fresh oysters and plenty of other seafood, and the Fish Peddler cafe with prepared seafood items including clam chowder, fish-and-chips and full oyster bar.

WHERE TO START Begin your day with a hike on Kilchis Point, a 200-acre piece of land bordering Tillamook Bay on the south end of Bay City. Held in trust for the public by the Tillamook County Pioneer Museum, the wetland and woodland area is home to a variety of plants and wildlife. It features an interpretive kiosk,

benches and a native plant garden, as well as a trail that meanders through the property, ending at tree used as a Great Blue Heron and egret nesting spot. Break for a late breakfast or early lunch at Downie´s Cafe, which is situated in the heart of Bay City. A neighborhood restaurant and local institution, Downie´s is where Bay City denizens meet for a meal or a cup of coffee and a slice of pie, and talk about the lighthearted and serious matters of town and world at large. Or you can have lunch at the Fish Peddler (pg 45), across the highway, perched on the edge of Tillamook Bay (see more in intro). Visit the Tillamook Country Smoker (pg 47), located along Highway 101, just north of the Tillamook Country Smoker plant. The local maker of beef jerky and other smoked meat products had its start about 50 years ago, when Art Crossley began selling the beef jerky he made for his friends and family. Today, that modest enterprise has grown into a third-generation family business making and shipping thousands of pounds of natural meat snacks throughout the world. Unwind at Al Griffin Memorial Park, which straddles a creek in a wooded area on the west side of town. The park includes Ken´s Place - a children´s playground, tennis courts (which doubles as a basketball court), and a skate park. It offers picnic

tables, 12 camping sites, including four RV sites and eight tent sites. Or visit the Watt Family Park, at Tillamook Avenue and 12th Street, with its large ball field. The Tillamook Family YMCA has plans to use the property for soccer and peewee football. Check the schedule at the Bay City Arts Center, the big white building with the pillars in the middle of town. At any given moment, a workshop or other event is happening in this arts and culture center, which is owned and operated by a nonprofit organization for the community. It has played host to plays, art openings, elaborate dinners, and humble pancake breakfasts. No matter what event it is presenting, it is always full of warm, welcoming, creative people. Finish your evening with a drink and/or dinner at The Landing Restaurant & Lounge (pg 45), where you can enjoy a game of pool and relax among your newfound Bay City friends.

Local History!

Long a fishing and lumber town, Garibaldi continues to rely on traditional industry to fuel its economy. That makes for an interesting destination for visitors, who are treated to the bustle of a working port, and only commercial fishing dock for 50 miles, as well as the sound of the noon whistle signaling the lunch break at the local alder mill. The Port of Garibaldi, which occupies much of the waterfront along Tillamook Bay, plays host to tenants ranging from seafood processors to charter boat operators and seafood restaurants. The city is home to the United States Coast Guard Station Tillamook Bay, whose crew tends safety on coastal waters from Tillamook Head south to Cape Kiwanda. Garibaldi´s iconic ¨Big G,” located high atop a hill above the town, is a metal structure built and maintained by the community. During the holidays, its white light bulbs are often replaced with red bulbs to mark the season. The Old Mill Marina smoke stack, a remnant from the Hammond sawmill, which operated in town beginning in the 1920s, looms over the south end of town.

Crabbing for all ages

Garibaldi holds a number of events throughout the year, including the popular and inimitable Garibaldi Crab Races, Garibaldi Days, and the Oregon Tuna Classic.

WHERE TO START You’re in a fishing town, so why not arise early and hire a fishing guide or charter boat operator to take you out on the bay or ocean for a morning of fishing or crabbing? If you’re more of a landlubber at heart, you can still get a taste of the seafood excitement by taking a clam gun or shovel to Garibaldi’s famous clamming beds for gaper or cockels, or by crabbing off one of the public docks at the Port of Garibaldi for Dungeness crab. You can buy your shellfish license and buy or rent gear at the Garibaldi Marina (pg 36), located next to the public boat launch at the Port. By now you have probably worked up an appetite. Visit one of Garibaldi’s many diners or cafés for breakfast or lunch. Most of these offer a variety of seafood items for every meal.

22 | GARIBALDI | 2013 TILLAMOOK AREA VISITOR GUIDE | GoTillamook.com

To get a sense of the community’s heritage, visit the Garibaldi Maritime Museum (pg 42), which, in addition to featuring many photos and artifacts from 20th-century Garibaldi and the Native American people indigenous to the region, focuses on Captain Robert Gray and his 18th-century vessels, the Lady Washington and the Columbia Rediviva. Gray, who was the first white man to “discover” the Columbia River in 1792, visited Tillamook Bay with his crew four years prior. At first he mistakenly believed the bay was the Great River of the West. After a scuffle between his crew and the Native Americans of Garibaldi that left a crewmember and several Native Americans dead, he hastily departed, calling the bay Murderers’ Harbor. In the afternoon, browse through Garibaldi’s shops or hop a ride aboard an Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad (pg 31) steam locomotive. The trains run from Garibaldi through Rockaway Beach to Wheeler and back. There are special excursions and dinner trains available in addition to shorter rides. Visit one of Garibaldi´s fresh seafood outlets, many of which restock their inventory multiple times each day, for the makings of a homemade dinner. Or, if you are staying in a hotel without a kitchen, choose from several restaurants offering dinner. Garibaldi nightlife consists mostly of a handful of pubs and taverns, as well as occasional dances or other events in the local City Hall building or the Old Mill Marina Event Center.

If that isn’t your scene, consider building a campfire at nearby Barview Jetty Campground, which is located near the Tillamook Bay Jetties, just north of Garibaldi. The park is operated by Tillamook County. It includes tent and RV sites, as well as access to a stretch of beach along the ocean. End your day by turning in at the campground, one of the local RV parks, or one of several motels, such as the Garibaldi House Inn & Suites (pg 39) or Harborview Inn (pg 39).

Twin Rocks

With seven miles of sandy shoreline, and a long string of diverse eateries and shops, Rockaway Beach is the quintessential coastal resort town. Established in 1909, the city was named after Rockaway Beach, NY. It became a popular beach destination for Portland families, thanks to its connection to the to the big city by train in 1912. The Pronto Pup corn dog was invented in Rockaway Beach in the 1930s. To this day, the bright yellow Pronto Pup trailer can be seen at many local events. And Rockaway Beach has plenty of events, year-round, including the Kite Festival, Fourth of July Parade, Fourth of July Fireworks, Pirate Festival, Summer Friday Night Bonfires, Summer Street Dances, Rocktoberfest (a concert by the beach to raise funds for local school music programs), Music Festival at the Ocean’s Edge, Holiday Gift Fair and Tree-Lighting. The main attraction, though, continues to be the beach itself. From the Nedonna Beach

The camp features lodges, cabins, a dining hall, meeting rooms, a basketball court, volleyball pit, sports fields, playgrounds, interpretive trails, and a , among other amenities. The camp welcomes reservations from churches, schools, non-profit groups, community organizations, choirs, bands, sports teams, and others. Twin Rocks Friends Camp & Conference Center offers camps and retreats to Christian and other groups. Twin Rocks Friends Camp occupies 120 acres with modern accommodations for more than 300 people. Campers swim and boat in adjacent Spring Lake, as well as hike wooded and mountain trails.

WHERE TO START Start your day with breakfast or coffee at one of the city´s restaurants, such as Grumpy´s Cafe (pg 45), which serves traditional American comfort food. Or, stop by R&R Espresso drivethru, and then head to the beach to watch the sunrise light up the Twin Rocks, two monoliths located offshore on the south end of town. If you like shopping, you will love the variety of shops Rockaway Beach offers, including those featuring antiques, homemade candy, thrift store items, and vintage clothing. The Frugal Crow, located in the heart of downtown, is a favorite among visitors and locals, with its ever-changing inventory of clothing, furniture, linens, and, in the words of the owner, ¨just about anything old, funky, or beautiful.¨ Have lunch and an ice cream cone (available at several shops and cafes) for dessert while enjoying the watching beachcombers from a bench at the Rockaway Beach Wayside, in the heart of downtown. Next, head for one of the city´s six lakes, all remnants of the Nehalem River´s former channel south to Garibaldi (the river now empties into the Nehalem Bay on the north end of Rockaway Beach). Each lake is located on the east side of Highway 101. They range in size from the largest, Lake Lytle, which is popular with boaters and water-skiers, to tiny

Lake Marie, located between Minnehaha and Washington streets on the south end of town. Lake Lytle offers a boat launch and public dock from which many people fish from lawn chairs while reading a book or chatting with a companion. An early summer evening makes for a great time to visit the Rockaway Beach Cedar Wetland Preserve, located east of Highway 101 on the south end of town. A wooded path winds its way to a giant Western red cedar tree, stretching to 154 feet high and measure 49 feet around. (The trail can be hard to access owing to trees blown down by storms, so enter at your own risk, and stick to the path.) Catch the sunset during a low tide and you just might glimpse the remnants of the wreck of the Emily G. Reed, a wooden sailing schooner that ran aground carrying a load of coal in 1908, south of the Rockaway Beach Wayside.

Quaint Downtown Nehalem

Manzanita Sweets!

Wheeler Docks

Wheeler, Nehalem and Manzanita The three villages that make up the Nehalem Bay Area – Wheeler, Nehalem, and Manzanita – are at once entirely different in character and completely interdependent. Wheeler offers residents and visitors an impressive view of the bay, where, during the town´s heyday, local mills floated logs bound for San Francisco. Nehalem is built along the river of the same name. Despite the fact that Highway 101 runs through it, it still bears a remarkable resemblance to its turn-of-the-19th-century self, with its old-fashioned storefronts. Manzanita, which rises along a hill from the beach, is at once an upscale resort town and an arts community filled with colorful characters. Together, the Tri-villages, as many refer to them, compose a tight-knit, yet diverse community catering to everyone from golfers to organic farmers to visitors from the city to sports fishermen.

Outlying areas and attractions include the Nehalem Fish Hatchery, Nehalem Falls, Roy Creek Park, Soapstone Lake, and Lost Lake.

When the beach is too busy, you can always find respite in one of Wheeler´s city parks. The Waterfront Park is downtown, and, as its name implies, directly next to Nehalem Bay. Its gardens, picnic tables, benches, and barbecue grills make it easy to relax or even have a meal with a view of the estuary. A boat launch and public dock, located between the park and the bay, are popular with sports fishermen and kayakers. If you don´t have your own boat, fishing gear, or kayak, consider renting any of the above

from Jetty Fishery (pg 44), which shares the entrance from Highway 101 with the park and boat launch. Or grab a cup of coffee and a pastry at the local bakery and head uphill to the Upper City Park, located on a hill overlooking the village. In addition to stellar views, the park offers playground equipment, picnic tables, a baseball diamond, horseshoe pits, and a BMX track. It´s a great spot for quiet reflection in the morning, and for large events with friends and family in the afternoons. Afternoons are perfect for shopping in downtown Wheeler, which offers antiques, gifts, art and crafts, office supplies and stationery, and a destination fabrics and quilting store. For dinner, or a late afternoon drink, stop by one of the area´s several eateries.

WHERE TO START: NEHALEM

Spend a late morning or early afternoon in Nehalem browsing antiques and art, and then grab a bite at one of several cafes. Afterward, visit the local grocery store for an ice cream cone, stroll across the highway and watch the Nehalem River roll by at a public dock. The longest river in the Coast Range, the Nehalem River offers some of the best bird-watching around. It is also home, depending on the season, to fall Chinook, coho salmon, chum salmon, steelhead trout, and sea-run

cutthroat trout, which is why it is nearly legendary among sport fishermen from throughout the Pacific Northwest. If you would rather enjoy the river by kayak, stop by Hal´s General Store, the local minidepartment store, and rent a kayak for a short paddle along the river. Looking for a place to work out? Visit the North County Recreation District, which features a swimming pool, fitness facility with cardio equipment and weights, yoga classes, and other programs for all ages. A short distance away, in the unincorporated community of Mohler, you will find the Nehalem Bay Winery (pg 49), which is open for tasting most days. A few miles in the opposite direction you will find your trip essentials in is the unincorporated community of Bayside Gardens, which features a coin-operated laundry, Shell gas station and convenience store, a thrift store, tavern, restaurant and motel, a medical clinic, ambulance quarters, a fire district headquarters, and two churches. Each summer, the city is the scene of the Nehalem Arts & Crafts Fair.

for a freshly made cinnamon roll or savory roll. Take a long walk on the beach, which stretches from the foot of Neahkahnie Mountain to the tip of Nehalem Spit and feel your senses come alive in rhythm with the tide. The beach is popular with windsurfers, which can often be seen riding the waves just offshore. If you need more exercise, you can jog along the beach, or pedestrian paths from the city to Nehalem Bay State Park, which offers tent, RV, and yurt camping, an amphitheater for sumFort Stevens

You can also rent a traditional bicycle, a beach ¨funcycle,¨ or surfing gear from Manzanita Bikes & Boards. The business also offers free use of Beach Wheelchairs for those who find accessing the beach. Manzanita also offers a private gym that allows drop-ins, and a stand up paddleboard company that offers lessons and guided tours. If you are in the mood for shopping, Manzanita can deliver! Its many shops line Laneda Avenue and Manzanita Avenue, and range from an environmentally sustainable clothing boutique to a shop offering yarn, and gifts. Manzanita Sweets (pg 47) is a must stop to grab that great treat for all ages ranging from locally made taffy and chocolates to your classic vintage flavors. Slightly off the beaten path, located south of the city and next to Nehalem Bay State Park, is CARTM, a nonprofit organization operating a one-stop recycling center that accepts more than 40 types of materials, reuse thrift store, and transfer station. No visit to Manzanita is complete without a stop at CARTM. Check the schedule of another local nonprofit, the Hoffman Center, which is based in downtown Manzanita. It hosts artists, writers, and other creative types at readings, workshops, and other events year-round. It also offers a clay studio that is open to

the public. Play a round at the Manzanita Golf Course, which is open year-round. It features 9 holes, a pro club, a snack bar and a nearby driving range. In the evening, have dinner or appetizers at one of the city´s restaurants, such as the Big Wave Cafe (pg 44), which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, where Chef Brian Williams is always preparing something sure to appeal to visitors and locals alike. Finally, retire for the night in one of the area´s many lodging motels, bed-and-breakfasts, or vacation rentals. The San Dune Inn (pg 40), for instance, is located in the heart of downtown, and offers a unique blend of English and Southern hospitality, thanks to owners Brian and Billie Hines, who hail from those parts of the world respectively. Or relax at the Zen Garden Bed & Breakfast (pg 38) for the all inclusive feel. Oswald West State Park is located a few miles north of Manzanita, off Highway 101. In addition to a number of trails that wind through a temperate rain forest, the park offers access to a Short Sands beach, a cove sheltered from wind. There are picnic tables scattered throughout the wooded property. The park also makes for a convenient starting point for hikes to Falcon Head and the Oregon Coast Trail. Be sure if you’re visiting in the summer to look for the Manzanita Farmers Market that runs every Friday from June through September on Laneda Avenue.
