Upcoming I hope you are thawed out from the chilly winter we just experienced, because Events GOLF

April

we’ve got plenty of things to do now that we’ve reached March!

Our first event of the season is the Red, White, and Blue Scramble Golf Tournament. On Saturday, March 17th we’ll have teams consisting of three players, one Lady playing Red Tees, One Senior Male playing White or Gold Tees, and one male playing Blue Tees. It’s a great tournament combining our different groups of players. New this year is a Junior Golf Tournament Series. Our Junior Golf Committee Chairperson, Margaret Hinson and I developed a schedule to have one nine-hole event per month from May to August and then a Junior Championship in September. It is for boys and girls ages 6-17, with the following dates set: Sunday, May 20th, 2 pm, Saturday, June 23rd, 2 pm, Sunday, July 15th, 2 pm, Saturday, August 18th, 2 pm, and Sunday, September 9th for the Championship. We will also have a weekly junior clinic once school lets out for the summer. The time and day will be determined as we get closer to June. The entry fee for the nine-hole events will be $5 per child with a deadline of 5pm Wednesday before the event to sign up.

MSGA Rules Official Joan Heiss will be here on Saturday, March 24th for an informative indoor/outdoor session on the Rules of Golf. It begins at 9am and will last about 2½ hours. These rules events are a fun way to learn how the rules can help you in certain situations and not always penalize you.

SBY Restaurant Week We will be doing a deep tine aeration on the greens on Tuesday March 6th. The course will be closed on this day to complete the process. Deep timing the greens will help with the drainage and compaction on the greens. This is just a part of our on-going plan to return the greens to great condition and keep them there.

Friday, March 23th we will have a Cigar Dinner. If you missed the January Cigar dinner you missed a wonderful evening with excellent food with fine libations and a great cigar. Mike Pfingst of Etch-Art Cigars will be here with a representative from Drew Estate Cigars to pair up his cigars with a tasty creation from our chefs and a selection of bourbon. Make plans now to experience a wonderful evening by the river. Rob McDonald, PGA Head Golf Professional

LADIES GOLF Hello Ladies, Hopefully our new golfing season is just around the corner. We have had some very unusual weather lately and some of us have actually been able to get out and play a few rounds. Keep your fingers crossed that the worst of it is behind us. Just a reminder that we will be having our Spring meeting on Friday, March 16th, at 5:30. If you plan to stay and eat afterwards, please let Donna know in advance. Please mark your calendars and join us. We have lots to discuss and several new members to meet, as well. If you happen to see James McNaughton around the club, please thank him for us....he built and donated 3 new benches for the course. I'll have one to show you at the meeting. We certainly appreciate his generosity.

There is a Red, White, and Blue tournament scheduled for Saturday, March 17th. If you haven't signed up, please think about playing. It's a fun way to start out the new season.

Another reminder is the rules clinic on Saturday, March 24th. Joan Heis, from Talbot Country Club, is returning to Green Hill to give another seminar. If you were not able to attend before, please try to make it in March. It is definitely beneficial and many of the older rules are now changing. Men have been invited to attend, too.

The Pepsi Invitational will be held on Tuesday, June 19th. This tournament is the longest running tournament ever, in the state of Maryland. The committee has already been meeting and planning. This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the Pepsi and some new ideas are in the works. Please make a point to sign up when the entry forms come out.

GOLF

Green Hill: Although the calendar would indicate that we have about a month to go before it is officially spring, today’s afternoon temperature and the crosus blooming in the yard are hopeful signs that it is coming sooner than that groundhog had predicated! We are all looking forward to leaving a very cold and snowy winter behind and getting ready to get back to golf. Winter certainly left its calling card on the golf course this year. The larger accumulations of snow and ice took a toll on many of our older trees and we are in the process of cleaning up the debris that littered the course. General clean up and pruning will begin as weather permits. During the clean up process trees will be identified for removal that are either in poor condition or may be blocking the sun necessary for successful grass growth on tee boxes. Reseeding, and in some instances sod installation, will then take place on tee boxes after the trees have been removed. Probably of most concern has been the general health of our greens this winter, particularly holes 4 and 8. The options for "Push Up" greens like ours are few. We have had conversations and inspections with a number of consultants. Soil samples have been analyzed by 2 different labs. As a result, we have contracted with Growing Solutions, (Mid Atlantic course consultants based in White Marsh, MD) to deep tine all greens on Tuesday, March 6th. In a single day, the greens will be punched with a 12” deep, 7/8” diameter hole and filled and top dressed with PGA graded sand. This is a substantially larger aeration project than has ever been performed at Green Hill. The goal is to help our “push up” greens breathe and promote better drainage. They recommend that reseeding will take place the following week. (Weather permitting) There has been a question about the effect of continued play on the greens immediately following the process. We have been assured that while problem areas will be considered “ground under repair,” there is no benefit in closing an entire green.

As we move into the season, we will "needle tine" every few weeks to help our greens to breathe and drain. There may also be some collar trimming to aid drainage. Green Hill Ladies Golf expressed interest in getting the fountains in working order again as ladies golf was originally responsible for the fountains on hole 4 and 8. We are evaluating whether to repair or replace and install a timer to make the ponds more picturesque. There will be a spring cleaning of the course restrooms on #6. We understand the septic system may also need attention. On behalf of the Staff and Green Hill Country Club, LLC, we want to thank you for your continued support.
