MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Orchard Families and Friends, The 2020–2021 school year marks The Orchard School’s 98th year, and our community has achieved unprecedented accomplishments in an unprecedented year. After concluding the 2019–20 school year remotely following Gov. Eric Holcomb’s mandated campus closures in response to COVID-19, we had a very busy summer as we completed our work to welcome back our students this fall. Extensive facilities upgrades inside the building and across our campus, training and planning for faculty and staff, and new practices and procedures to support the health and well-being of our students, faculty, and staff built momentum and camaraderie as we prepared for the new school year. Welcoming back our Orchard Owls for a happy, healthy, and engaged school year was truly a labor of love, and hearing the sounds of students laughing and playing across our 43-acre campus has made it all worthwhile.

Our generous donors continue to ensure our success. Most of our students were on campus for 12 weeks of in-person instruction this fall before Marion County directed all first through 12th graders to transition back to remote learning, and those three months of teaching, learning, playing, and making full use of our outdoor spaces were vital to the successful launch of the school year. Our donors made all the difference in helping to ensure that we could make full use of our outdoor spaces, and we completed fundraising and construction for our three natural playgrounds as part of Orchard’s Capital Campaign, Celebrating our Roots: Cultivating for the Future. The campaign has been generously supported by many donors and tireless volunteers, including our Capital Campaign Cabinet, and having the opportunity to move forward and complete this final building project—a year ahead of our original plan—is a testament to our community’s extraordinary commitment to our students and our deep commitment to Progressive education. Nature as Teacher has always been a cornerstone of what makes an Orchard education so special and, in 2020, our opportunities for outdoor education have been more important than ever. Our improved playgrounds, which include three covered, Wi-Fi enabled amphitheaters, will continue to make a real impact on our students’ experiences and educational outcomes for many years to come. The Campaign for Orchard will continue to lay the foundation for Orchard’s next 100 years of Progressive education by providing for our faculty, staff, students, and facilities, and I am grateful for the generosity of a school community that has kept the vision of our school’s nine founding mothers thriving for almost a century.

I would like to thank our entire community for dedicating their time, talent, and treasure in pursuit of excellent teaching, programs, and facilities. The generous financial support of donors is reflected in their participation in The Owl Fund, the Auction, and Orchard’s endowment, as well as The Campaign For Orchard. Our Parents’ Association and Alumni Heritage Association work tirelessly to build connections between past and present 4

members of our community, and also help us meet the budgetary needs of our school. And our parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, Trustees, Governors, and current and former students continue to come together, in person and online, to pursue joyful learning that is grounded in our mission to educate and develop the whole child. I couldn’t be more proud of what we have accomplished together.

Progressive education is at the heart of our work at Orchard, and our teaching practices continue to be grounded in our deep commitment to four foundational principles: Nature as Teacher; Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Social-Emotional Learning; and Hands-On, Integrated Learning. As we look ahead to the new year, we are eager to welcome back our first through eighth graders on campus, and we will continue to ground our work in the love, connection, and learning that makes Orchard such a special place. In the meantime, we’re so glad to have our littlest Owls in Early Childhood holding down the nest!

To continue this rich tradition, the Orchard community holds the key. If we can come together and contribute as we are able, we can achieve striking success. MADE IN THE MAKERSPACE

BY JAMES LAYNE, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS

FOR NEARLY 100 YEARS, TEACHERS AT THE ORCHARD SCHOOL HAVE INSPIRED THE NATURAL CURIOSITY OF CHILDREN BY DESIGNING A CURRICULUM CHOCK-FULL OF LEARNING BY DOING. The new 3,700-square-foot Fred Lorenz Makerspace, named after Orchard legend and beloved shop teacher Fred Lorenz, stays true to its roots and provides many opportunities for students to use real tools while excelling in applied mathematics.

Students can use the Makerspace’s fully functioning woodshop, complete with power tools and hand tools, while another class can plan and create in the flexible classroom space. An adjustable green screen wraps the walls next to a workbench with multiple 3D printers. These computer-aided design tools are directly across from a 6-foot by 9-foot LEGO wall geared toward, but not limited to, elementary school students.

Orchard students unfortunately had limited time in the Makerspace this year before rising COVID-19 positivity rates forced a return to remote learning for grades one through eight. The Marion County Public Health Department and Mayor Joe Hogsett required the move in November.

However, every single grade still enjoyed quality time brainstorming and building with Orchard’s Makerspace coordinator Scott Weaver. It took lots of coordinating with classrooms and cohorts to keep everyone safe, but students are eager to pick up where they left off in January.

Here are all of the completed Makerspace projects from the first few months of school:

PRESCHOOLERS PREPARE FOR IDENTITY PROJECT

The study of identity is a major focus in all preschool classrooms at The Orchard School. Students write poems, make family books, construct identity blocks, film movies, and create identity boxes, among other things, to celebrate multiple perspectives and create meaningful and important conversations. These preschoolers are doing the mathematical prep work needed to update the nature-inspired Shades of Brown artwork, including helping to measure, cut, and sand wooden rectangle panels for this display in the preschool hallway.

KINDERGARTENERS CREATE NAME TAGS, FAIRY TALE SETS

We all learn how to write our names in kindergarten, but at Orchard students also learn how to build them! Every kindergartener crafted their own name tag with a cute little house beside it. Next up for the group is constructing sets for the fairy tale unit that provides an integrated approach to learning and project creation—true Orchard magic. Also pictured is the massive chalkboard that sits in a dedicated outdoor learning space deep in the Orchard woods. With the guidance of Scott Weaver, students in Kate Lange ’94 and Caitlin Arnold’s classroom built a stunning, one-of-a-kind structure complete with a metal roof and gutter system!

FIRST GRADERS FIRST IN THE DOOR WITH GEOBOARDS AND MORE

First graders were the first students to use the Makerspace this year, making wooden geoboards with Early Childhood and Elementary School science teacher Vicky Prusinski. Students had so much fun making these mathematical manipulatives, used to explore basic concepts in plane geometry, that every classroom went back for more opportunities to make. Each room then selected a project—fun pencil holders, family picture frames, or fancy lap desks—to build.

LET THE GAMES BEGIN IN SECOND GRADE

In September, second grade teachers looking for the perfect student free-time filler began with Scott Weaver’s guided discovery of measuring tapes, squares, clamps, saws, and sandpaper. Each student then sanded and cut 30 blocks at 3 inches a pop, resulting in a set of multipurpose blocks disguised as the Jenga game. Students quickly turned the tumbling tower pieces into football goals, domino runs, and measuring tools, too.

MADE IN THE MAKERSPACE THOROUGH THIRD GRADERS BREAK GROUND ON BRIDGE PROJECT

Building bridges is a highlight for every elementary school child. Fortunately for Orchard students, they have unlimited access to wood of all shapes and sizes in the Makerspace, making for some distinctive structures. To learn more, visit orchard.org/bridges.

THANKS FOR THE FAVOR, FOURTH GRADERS

During a typical school year, fourth graders are in charge of a carnival-style event called Dime Day that raises money for charity. This Orchard tradition integrates many subjects and requires several 21st century skills, including collaboration and problem-solving. Current fourth graders helped Scott Weaver disassemble all of the games from last year, a great way to learn the ins and outs of power and hand tools. Fun fact: Students then repurposed game pieces and placed them around campus; check out the giant wooden rainbow that shines in the Early Childhood music room.

FIFTH GRADERS DRAFT HOME SHELTERS DURING INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY

Fifth graders in Teressa Hart’s classroom celebrated Indigenous Peoples’ Day on Monday, Oct. 12, with the telling of traditional stories from North American tribes. Students spent the weeks leading up to the holiday learning about the similarities and differences of the people who lived on the North American continent before European contact.

Some students used power tools from the Makerspace woodshop to create models of indigenous peoples’ shelters, which are now on display in the main lobby for other students to observe. Didn’t they turn out great?

MADE IN THE MAKERSPACE SKILLFUL SIXTH GRADERS ROLL OUT DICE GAME

Instead of using traditional cards, sixth graders carved a custom dice game to improve number sense and fluency with math facts. The game forces players to think critically while evaluating the purpose of every operation.

Students roll two dice and either add, subtract, multiply, or divide them—whoever gets all their tiles flipped first wins. Sixth graders also helped Scott Weaver create a downright awesome domino clock that will adorn the Makerspace for years to come.

SEVENTH GRADERS TAKE A WHACK AT CROQUET MALLETS

Earlier this year, seventh and eighth grade learning support teacher Bethanne Collins shared her love of croquet with her seventh grade advisory during a morning meeting. This piqued her students’ interest and ultimately led to the entire group making their own wooden croquet mallets in the Makerspace. Students invented other games with the pieces and enjoyed the friendly competition. Is there a better way to bond with your friends than croquet?

Seventh graders don’t think so. In the spring, seventh graders will be in the driver’s seat to build a massive mathinfused derby track. Find out more at orchard.org/derby.

EXPERIENCED EIGHTH GRADERS PROTOTYPE EXCITING CORNHOLE EVENT

Prototyping is a crucial part of the design process. It helps designers hold a tangible product in their hands to evaluate effectiveness and tie up loose ends. Eighth graders in English teacher Danielle Shamroe’s advisory are in the early stages of planning a charity cornhole competition for the end of the year. In the Makerspace, Scott Weaver challenged students to prototype mathematically precise cornhole boards within 10 minutes.

“ORCHARD IS A UNIQUE SCHOOL BECAUSE IT GIVES ITS STUDENTS THE FREEDOM TO EXPLORE WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY WANT TO BECOME.” If you were one of the 55 million people who tuned in to Apple’s virtual product launch in October, you might’ve noticed Dave Wilkes Jr. from The Orchard School Class of 2003 presenting with Apple CEO Tim Cook.

in 2011 and a master’s of science in 2013. Indianapolisbased Klipsch Audio Technologies then hired him to lead the acoustic design for a line of speakers. Finally, all of this hard work caught Apple’s eye.

As manager of acoustics and home audio at Apple, Wilkes and his team helped build an Alexa rival, HomePod mini. As he said at the event, it’s the “ultimate smart speaker for iPhone owners.” And if anyone knows anything about audio, it’s Wilkes.

Wilkes nearly missed out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work for one of the world’s top 10-largest public companies. “I ignored them multiple times not believing their interest was real,” he said. But after some networking, he found out the tech corporation was recruiting for a new project—the second-generation Apple Watch.

As a teen, Wilkes was all in on audio and electronics.

He spent most of his free time building speakers and circuits, which led him to Purdue University, where he interned with Bose Corporation and earned two electrical engineering degrees: a bachelor’s of science

At Klipsch, Wilkes worked on speakers that were roughly five feet tall, so a move to the Apple Watch and its half-inch speaker was quite a gamble. Ultimately he 14

made the move from Indianapolis to California to work on the tiny speaker with big opportunities.

“Now that I’ve been at Apple for over five years, led acoustic architecture on the watch for multiple generations, and now manage the team creating home audio products like HomePod and HomePod mini,” Wilkes said, “it was the right choice for sure.”

Life is great, all 2020-related things considered.

After Orchard I went to Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School, from there to Purdue for undergrad and grad school both in electrical engineering, and now I have a wonderful family. I met my amazing wife and best friend Rachel at Purdue, and we have two hilarious boys: JJ, who is 2 years old, and Elliott, who just turned 7 months old. JJ’s cheeky mischievous face is how he always is, so he may be following in my footsteps a bit too closely!

I think we all want to know, what’s it like working at Apple headquarters, especially inside “the spaceship”?

Apple Park is as extraordinary as it looks. The attention to detail in the building more than matches what goes into the devices we make. For example, the metal finishes inside are color-matched to the products. So if you’re in an elevator, you can see that your MacBook is exactly the same color and finish as the floor control panel. Even better, the glass used throughout is of such a high quality that when the building first opened, people would constantly run into glass partitions because they couldn’t see them! They’ve since added small markers to keep everyone safe, but you can tell that even those markers were made to match Apple’s design language.

What exactly does your job entail as manager of acoustics, home audio products?

My former role at Apple was leading acoustic architecture for Apple Watch. What that means in a nutshell is figuring out what speaker and microphone are needed to allow customers to have phone calls, and hear from and speak to Siri. all while being able to survive basically any environment the user comes across. Those environments are pretty intense: 50 meters (164 feet) of water immersion, daily Olympiccaliber swimming, 10 meter high dive, etc. That knowledge, however, is directly applicable to other fields in audio, so when I moved to lead the home audio team, I could also leverage the work I did at Klipsch.

In my current role, my team is responsible for the end-to-end audio design of anything that an Apple customer will put in their home. That includes things like HomePod and the new HomePod mini, but also unexpected products like the AppleTV remote, which has microphones in it. We work with dozens of other teams to figure out how to take an audio

experience and package it into a product that will fit the constraints of not just cost but also keeping within Apple’s design guidelines.

What’s it like knowing something you worked on will be in millions of homes all over the globe?

It’s very humbling! We spend so much time and effort to get the products just right with the hopes that we can make people’s lives just a little bit better. It’s therefore always exciting to launch something that gets well-reviewed. That makes it worth the crazy hours and sometimes working through weekends or, pre-COVID, traveling internationally during holidays. If someone’s able to enjoy their day a bit more because they get to listen to the music they love or they can seamlessly have a phone call on their Apple Watch in an emergency because of the work we’ve done, that’s the job done well in my view.

How does your Orchard experience tie-in to all of your success?

Orchard is a unique school because it gives its students the freedom to explore who they are and what they want to become. That said, at the end of the day, the school demands the students meet an academic bar that is quite high. I didn’t really appreciate that balancing act until way later, but in a way it’s all a parallel to engineering. You have to come up with any number of creative solutions to problems but using rigid science and math principles. Doing that forces you to learn discipline and that absolutely applies to other areas of your life. I have to say that the teacher I recall who really understood this and truly pushed me to understand it was math teacher Linda Gelhausen.

Mrs. Gelhausen set the expectations high in her classes, and I recall with the benefit of hindsight that she was expecting a lot out of me and for sure way more than I was otherwise intending to give. But she didn’t give up!

She continued to push me through fourth grade and then even more in fifth grade. I can’t thank her enough for refusing to accept mediocrity when she knew more was available if I would just push myself.

Maybe one day when you’re back in Indianapolis, you could do a mock product release and Q&A for our middle school students.

[Laughs] I’d love to! Just let me know when, after we’ve put this pandemic behind us.

Finally, we always like to ask, what’s your favorite memory of The Orchard School?

We did a lot of unbelievable stuff at Orchard: Chicago, D.C., Space Camp, Moontown, The Dig, ropes courses, etc. But I think my favorite overall is extremely mundane: tapping the maple trees and making syrup. I can sense the “seriously? Out of everything?” thoughts from here, but yes, actually. I always loved walking into the forest to check and collect the buckets and then watch Diana Shellhaas stir tirelessly. Thinking back it was the intrigue of “how can this watery stuff from a tree become so delicious?” I also loved the smells: the damp forest plus the smoke from the fire as Mrs. Shellhaas was reducing the sap. So yes, maybe a simple answer, but a true one.

Congratulations to Max Eiteljorg ’05 and Lauren Dedinsky ’05! They were married Sept. 12 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Indianapolis.

While scouting for the perfect location to take engagement photos last year, Max and Lauren decided on the place where their love story began—The Orchard School. They met in preschool, where Max remembers trying to woo Lauren by kissing her shiny purple rain boots.

However, throughout their Orchard years and high school careers, Lauren considered Max off-limits because his twin sister Lili (Eiteljorg) Helmuth ’05 was and still is her best friend. It wasn’t until a few years ago that the two rekindled the relationship born over the purple boots on the Orchard playground. Their first date was in 2017 at—you guessed it— Orchard. Max was babysitting an Orchard student who was in the Middle School musical 1776.

times a year. “I like to stop by Coach Steve Thompson’s office to see our championship basketball trophies and pictures,” he said. “I am grateful for what Orchard has taught me, and I realize this on every visit.”

Courtney Jones ’13 recently completed a hard-fought soccer season on full scholarship at Clemson University, where she racked up nearly 700 minutes for the women’s Division I soccer team. Though the fourthseeded Tigers lost in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) quarterfinals to Duke University, the season was still memorable. Jones started with an assist and a goal, and she ended the season with perhaps her greatest soccer accolade to date—an All-ACC selection.

These on-field achievements join her stellar successes in the classroom. After graduating a year early with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Jones entered Clemson’s graduate school to study clinical health counseling.

Jones believes her formative years at The Orchard School helped foster her love of learning. “Orchard provided me a challenging environment academically,” she said, “which made me set such a high value on academic success, given that I sought out more environments like that at North Central High School and Clemson University.”

Life right now at Clemson is very weird! I am very grateful that we are able to have a soccer season and maintain some normalcy, but not going to class inperson is hard for me. Starting graduate school and not meeting up with new classmates just feels off, like I’m missing out on those new connections. We have to keep in our soccer team bubble, and not being able to hang out with my friends on other sports teams also stinks.

But at the end of the day, it is worth the sacrifice.

Other than that, I am doing great! My parents always find a way to see me, and I call them all the time, so I never have to worry about feeling homesick.

What are you studying?

I graduated a whole year early in spring 2020 with my bachelor’s in psychology and a minor in athletic leadership. Thank you so much! That goal was so important for me and my teammates. All last year, I went through a drought of not scoring, and I was overthinking everything. So a goal against a typically top-5 ranked Virginia was the icing on the cake for me. That goal also gave my team more room in case we made a mistake. I think I rewatched it like 20 times; I was so happy.

Track and field has always been a hobby for me.

Soccer always came first. To my surprise, I actually got a lot of interest from universities for track and field like Yale, UCLA, Clemson, and South Carolina.

I don’t know if I ever shared that with those two coaches, but I would have never gotten those opportunities without them.

We were recently scrolling through Instagram and noticed the Unity shirts created by student-athletes at Clemson University. And then we noticed your picture! Can you explain the purpose of the shirts and what it means to you?

I work with a group called Tigers Unite that caters to the needs of minority student athletes on campus.

We created the Unity shirts in response to the recent events (regarding police brutality and Black Lives Matter) as a visual representation of all of our hard work. ELISE O’NEILL ’21 GOES FROM MOCK COURT TO REAL-LIFE POLITICAL ACTIVISM FOR 2020 AND BEYOND

The Orchard School’s mission is to develop and educate the whole child. Part of that philosophy is to foster character development, independent critical thinking, and a commitment to service and civic responsibility. So it’s no surprise that Orchard students want to be involved during election seasons.

Elise O’Neill ’21 stands out from even those eager students.

Leading up to the general elections this year, Elise carved time out of her demanding sports commitments and busy school schedule (where she earns straight As) to find multiple ways to make an impact. Through The Civics Center, a youth civic engagement organization, she wrote 50 encouraging postcards to young voters in Ohio because “they’re an important swing state.” At the Broad Ripple Farmers Market, she worked alongside two of her best friends Meredith and Audrey to educate and register passersby. In total, these three helped register nearly 100 people to vote at their Indiana Citizen booth. And as November 4 inched closer, Elise phone-banked for a congressional candidate.

That’s a lot to handle for any 14-year-old, but Elise feels this is a crucial time for students her age— students who will be voters in the 2024 election.

“Over the years, Orchard has given me confidence and taught me that my voice matters,” she said.

“Well, I think there are a lot of important issues not

being dealt with right now, such as a concern for our environment, and this is a way for me to make a difference.”

Elise believes her passion for politics started in fifth grade during the mock Supreme Court hearings that Orchard students run in social studies class. “I remember being a lawyer during this project, and I had to write and present real arguments for the things I believe in,” she said. Students don’t just present to their peers, either; they confidently stand in front of a packed house full of family members and other faculty and staff. Elise won’t forget this life-altering experience. “Mrs. (Teressa) Hart’s social studies class really opened my eyes to everything going on in the world.”

For the past 11 years, Orchard has nurtured and prepared Elise with the tools she needed to become an active citizen rooted in justice, integrity, and compassion—something she hopes to continue in high school at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School.

As for life after high school, Elise dreams of working on a campaign and eventually leading one. “The government is really important and has a real impact on people’s lives,” she said. “So if I can get there and help all of the people who feel like they have no representation, then I want to do that.”

LEGACY OF THE LOG CABIN: BRUCE CHALKER’S FAMILY RETURNS TO REMEMBER FATHER’S LEGACY

BY JAMES LAYNE, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS Twenty-five years ago, The Orchard School completed construction of an outdoor learning area that would go on to become the staple of many students’ Orchard experience. From games of capture the flag to class archeological digs, the Orchard Cabin, and the grounds around it, are home to pivotal memories and plenty of Orchard-only experiences.

“The Chalker family loved the idea of The Cabin and space around it, as Bruce was a strong supporter of outdoor education,” Shellhaas said. “So I began working out the details; this was the first outdoor classroom space I set up at Orchard.”

Shellhaas decided to spruce up a corner of the Orchard campus that was overgrown and rarely used. During the initial cleanup, she discovered the foundation of an original farmhouse and a cistern. “(Shop teacher) Fred Lorenz told me how he used to take classes out there to have students attempt to fill the cistern with rocks, but they could never do it,” Shellhaas recalled with a smile. “When I thought about that story, the history of the property, and all the history that the 200-year-old oak tree had seen, I knew we found the right place.”

While the area is simply called “The Cabin” by most, the space’s official title is Serendipity Outdoor Learning Area: In Loving Memory of Bruce A. Chalker ’65. Chalker was a beloved Orchard alumni, parent, and board member who was passionate about outdoor education. He died unexpectedly in 1993, and his family asked that donations to memorialize him be made to The Orchard School in his name.

At the time, outdoor education teacher Diana Shellhaas worked with Chalker’s family to oversee construction of the outdoor learning area project.

In 2018, Shellhaas retired from Orchard after 35 years of dedicated service. She still returns each year to help with the Pancake Breakfast, an annual event hosted by the Alumni Heritage Association.

Last year’s pancake breakfast, the first of the new decade, was extra special. Bruce Chalker’s family traveled from different parts of the country to meet up for pancakes and walk the space that means so much to them. Bruce’s daughter Elizabeth (Chalker) Rogers ’97 loves that The Cabin is still a big part of the Orchard experience. “It brings me so much joy to see pictures of students using and learning at the cabin,” she said. “I know my dad would have loved all of the activities that go on in this outdoor learning space.”

HOW THE SPACE IS USED TODAY:

To ensure a lasting legacy, daughter Caitlin (Chalker) Massa ’99 and son Will Chalker ’01 will continue to visit Orchard as a family. Caitlin makes it a point to bring her children to The Cabin whenever she comes home from Chicago. “It’s important to tell them all about their grandpa Bruce,” she said. “My dad would love that Orchard is still integrating nature and the outdoors in this space.”

Will plans to bring his newborn son Oliver to Orchard, too. “I want to keep him rooted in what was such a foundational building block for both myself and my father,” he said. “ I plan to show Oliver what it’s like to give unconditionally to those around him like my dad did for the Orchard family.”

Six Orchard Grads Earn High Honors from the National Merit® Scholarship Program

BY JAMES LAYNE, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS Each year most high school juniors and some sophomores take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). This academic competition is a standardized test focused on mathematics and literacy to assess college and career preparedness. The test is sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit® Scholarship Program.

Out of 1.5 million PSAT/NMSQT entries, roughly 50,000 students qualify for Program Recognition. About 34,000 from that pool are recognized as Commended Scholars, and 19,000, the highest scoring entrants in each state, are named National Merit Semifinalists.

The Orchard School is thrilled to recognize the six Class of 2017 graduates who earned acclaim beyond Program Recognition from the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Congratulations to Eli Franklin, Robert Housman, Benjamin Merisotis, and Jillian Nanagas for earning Commended Scholars awards. It made going to school much more enjoyable and gave me a positive outlook on school, which set me up well for high school.

Orchard’s Impact on Me: Orchard has helped me succeed by teaching me to be in control of my own CURRENT SCHOOL learning. The Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School teachers really pushed the idea that everyone learns in a different way, and that is something I’ve carried with me since graduation.

My Fond Memory: Either roller skating or the class trips in Middle School. Both were very fun, and I have so many memories that I’ll take with me for the rest of my life.

My Fond Memory: Definitely collecting maple syrup. It’s something every Orchard kid remembers distinctly, and it was something I looked forward to every year. I still try to make it to the pancake breakfast every year with my sister Elizabeth ’22.

Orchard’s Impact on Me: I believe Orchard helped me succeed by emphasizing the importance of the whole CURRENT SCHOOL self. Not only Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School was I taught math and English, but I was also taught to be kind, motivated, and open to growth.

Orchard helped me to succeed by providing me with the tools and resources I needed to grow into my passions. My CURRENT SCHOOL teachers were Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School passionate about what they taught, and they cared for me beyond the classroom.

Orchard facilitated a loving and caring community that allowed me to feel comfortable sharing my opinions and thoughts with my peers and teachers.

The most amazing thing about Orchard, though, is its commitment to students spending time in nature, developing my love for spending time in nature and my commitment to sustainability today.

My Fond Memory: The eighth grade trip to Washington, D.C. I enjoyed spending time with my friends, and I also liked visiting the monuments. My other favorite memory was Field Day, where we spent the entire day playing outside and eating ice cream. In sixth grade, my all-girls advisory won the tug of war contest (go Becky Burton’s advisory!).

My Fond Memory: One of my favorite traditions at Orchard was Winter Pageant, and all of the associated festivities and fun. Winter Pageants always seemed magical, and it was an exciting send off for winter break.

LEARNING DURING A PANDEMIC IS NO PROBLEM AT ORCHARD Around the world, the 2020–2021 school year looks very different from previous years, but The Orchard School has adapted, upgraded facilities, and did what we’ve always done, learned outdoors. See how Orchard expanded the outdoor classroom spaces and used the 43-acre campus to stay healthy!

The tools of learning come outside, too. Check out this woodsy chalkboard dedicated to this Kindergarten class’ outdoor learning space. Kindergarten students assisted in the construction of the chalkboard in the new Orchard Makerspace

Five- and six-year-old students painted letters on wood slices, known as “tree cookies,” to make the space feel more like their indoor classroom.

THE FIRST 50 DAYS OF 2020: COVID BOOSTS CREATIVITY

THE FIRST 50 SCHOOL DAYS AT ORCHARD IN 2020

First grade story time is magical in the Orchard woods.

Like most schools across the country, The Orchard School’s start to the 2020–21 year has been unparalleled, to say the least. However, the one thing that has stayed true at Orchard is our creativity.

We found ways to upgrade our facilities and purchased a new HVAC unit to decrease the spread of viruses. We moved furniture out of the building to create more space, put temperature scanners at every main entrance, and upgraded all faucets to be hands-free. Overall, The Orchard School has invested $200,000 to create the healthiest indoor environment possible for our students, faculty, and staff.

Thanks to you, our wonderful community, we also reached our goal for Orchard’s three new natural playgrounds. The community came together to raise more than $1.4 million to complete the natural playground project, which is part of the $11 million capital campaign, Celebrating Our Roots: Cultivating for the Future. Nature is elemental to an Orchard education and now students will have even better ways to explore.

Orchard’s 43-acre wooded campus has always been a place for teaching and learning. Before the pandemic, it was not uncommon to see preschoolers 30

learning to count with rocks they found in the water feature, third-graders making their own salsa over an open fire during Spanish class, and seventh-graders journaling deep in the woods before a science test.

Thankfully, all of these moments are still happening at Orchard; in fact, they’re happening even more.

Recently, we asked teachers what percentage of their day is spent outside. From preschool to eighth grade, teachers believe they’ve spent 47 percent of each of the first 50 school days in the great outdoors. Richard Louv, author of “Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children From Nature-Deficit Disorder,” would be so proud! Teachers also tracked our students’ steps during this time and, on average, Orchard students took about 9,000 steps a day on and around campus.

That’s about a thousand more a day than the first 50 days of the 2019 school year!

Let’s give a shoutout to our teachers, who deserve all of the credit for finding creative and safe ways, daily, to ensure our Owls are happy, healthy, and engaged during their time at school. We are beyond grateful to have the most amazing faculty and staff!

2020–2021 SCHOOL YEAR HIGHLIGHTS

4th Grade Play | “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” The show must go on, even in a pandemic! The first fourth grade Grade play of the year was such a success, despite public health restrictions. We are so proud of our students for adjusting to the current times and making the best out of the opportunity to perform on stage. These awesome actors did an excellent job keeping their distance, wearing masks at all times, and replacing all singing parts with spoken word performances. Amazing!

The fourth-graders spent months rehearsing for their big show. One of the students had about 100 lines! Nice work, Owls.

6th Grade Musicians Perform Outdoor Concert Orchard’s sixth-grade students performed their first band and orchestra concert in early November. The students began playing instruments in fifth grade, but never got the chance to perform the annual first concert after school went remote.

These young musicians showed off their new skills to an audience of Elementary and Multiage preschool students as well as their teachers. Bravo!

Admissions Tour: “A Walk in the Woods” Video Recap To maintain public health as the top priority, The Orchard School held 99% of the Fall Tour outside and spread across the 43-acre campus. This allowed prospective families, faculty, and staff to practice appropriate physical distancing measures.

During staggered check-in times, families came inside quickly to use one of our many temperature scanners and complete a health screening form. Then families joined a designated tour group and the adventure began.

It was thrilling to showcase an Orchard education through outdoor exploration.

Orchard Students Get Crafty During Energy Production Projects Each year, energy production projects help Middle School students at The Orchard School recognize and understand the various energy sources available to use. Examples include wind, solar, hydroelectric, coal, biofuel, nuclear, wave, and oil. Students then prepare a slide presentation and a 3D model, while others choose to write a research paper.

It’s an exciting time in science as the students learn the pros and cons of the energy source they have chosen to study and comprehend its environmental impact.

Middle School Teachers at Orchard Are Making Math Fun Eighth-grade math teacher Ryan Mossakowski decided to take his math class outside for an experiential lesson around the slope formula. This lesson is a perfect example of how hands-on learning can continue even through social distancing guidelines. Also, taking kids outside to enhance the learning journey is nothing new for teachers at The Orchard School, so, as Mr. Mossakowski says, “it was another great day in math!”

Painting by an Orchard Founder Unearthed in New York Apartment Recently, a New York City resident discovered a painting in his newly purchased apartment. After some research, he learned that the painting was titled The Boar Hunt and was painted by Elizabeth “Beth” Driggs Bacon, one of the nine founders of The Orchard School. Although we are not sure of the exact year the painting was created, it was exhibited in the 1928 Hoosier Salon Exhibition.

Bacon was a native of Indianapolis where she was born in 1881. As an art lover, she studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Art Students League of New York.

Bacon’s portraits, still lifes, and decorative mythological paintings in oil were shown at various group exhibitions in Indianapolis, Richmond, and Chicago, and she won awards for her work in 1926.

In addition to her painting, Bacon taught art classes to children, and was an accomplished writer.

We are glad to have this piece of Orchard history at the school to share with future generations.

THE CAMPAIGN FOR ORCHARD

Dear Orchard Friends, Back in 2016, we agreed to co-chair The Orchard School’s capital campaign, Celebrating Our Roots: Cultivating for the Future. Orchard has meant a great deal to both of us, and this seemed like a natural way to express our gratitude and give back to the institution that is near and dear to our families.

Between our two families, we have seven children who are Orchard alumni and 11 grandchildren who are current Orchard students. We have seen the way Orchard individualized instruction to meet each of their needs and worked to not only educate them but to understand their unique personalities, abilities, and learning styles. We know that our family members would not be the people they are today without the loving care of The Orchard School.

We knew in 2016 that this campaign would be important. We knew it would lay the groundwork for the school’s future and provide the necessary resources to grow and thrive in its second century of Progressive education. There were a few things, however, that we could not have predicted. The COVID-19 pandemic has shined new light on the importance of adaptability in education. We felt at ease when students returned in the fall, knowing that they could safely socially distance without sacrificing the fun-filled learning environment to which they have grown accustomed. We knew that they would be in the care of teachers who care about them and take the time to understand who they are as individuals. We knew the administration would take seriously the research and recommendations while weighing Orchard’s specific environment and community to determine the best possible course of action.

These reflections have made us more grateful than ever for our beloved Orchard and prouder than ever to support its future through this campaign. We hope you will join us in reflecting on the impact of The Orchard School in your family. We hope you will express that gratitude back by making a gift toward the Faculty Support portion of the capital campaign.

Campaign planning began with a feasibility study in response to The Orchard School’s newly minted strategic plan. We heard overwhelmingly that our families wanted new natural playgrounds to complement Orchard’s natural playscape. We began work toward three new natural playgrounds and a $1.2 million project goal.

THE NATURAL PLAYGROUNDS ARE COMPLETE! COVID-19 hit and, while students were at home learning remotely, we got to work reprioritizing campaign initiatives to put the playground project front and center. Generous donors stepped up to get us closer to our goal and the budget was raised to $1,410,000 to add roofs to the amphitheaters in order to accommodate learning during inclement weather, include Wi-Fi, and upgrade materials to guard against weather damage and improve ease of sanitation.

Orchard students returned to school after many long months apart. They were welcomed with new places to roam, explore, and play while the structural elements of the playground arrived one by one. Kids enjoyed the wide-open AstroTurf-covered spaces and played and learned beneath the shelter of the three amphitheaters.

The whole community rallied together and closed the $175,000 gap to complete funding of the natural playgrounds.

Orchard alumna Ann Atkins Clark graduated from The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., and Vassar College.

After serving as a house parent with her husband, who taught at Yale Law School, Clark taught gym and coached girls’ field hockey, volleyball, and softball at The Foote School, “a co-ed school very much like Orchard. Teaching gym was the BEST,” she said. Clark now lives in North Branford, Conn. Here are her thoughts about her years at The Orchard School.

“Every day was a new adventure to me, full of kindness, FUN, learning to be open to new ideas, to explore...Orchard gave me an appreciation of what life could be, that the cup was always half full to brimming over. It still is.”

Ann Atkins Clark ’40 First memory: Kindergarten with Mrs. Rice and learning our alphabet, meeting our classmates.

Favorite teachers: Culmer, Ferguson, Beaumont, Sweet, Huth, Howie, and others­were all stars in their own right.

Fourth grade feature: The arrival of Gordon H. Thompson. We were his first class; he had recently graduated from Butler University.

Wonder of the woodshop: I loved learning how to use the saw, the hammer, and setting type for a printing press for the Orchard News; and building birdhouses to raise money for the new building, which would become the gym, lunch room, stage, and kitchen.

Sports are the star: I remember shooting baskets on Saturday mornings with Mr. Thompson and the boys (playing long and shorts or 21); catching Alice O’Neal Dye’s fast balls and field hockey and square dancing.

Printing old school: Learning to use and set up the mimeograph machine; it was messy and tricky to type on.

Dramatic turn: Production of The Mikado (by Gilbert and Sullivan) and The Crisis (by Winston Churchill) after we had studied the Civil War. Always an inspiration: Gordon Thompson was the star I set my sights on. He led the way by his example and still does today.

2019-2020 ENDOWED FUND DONORS Endowed gifts are an integral part of The Orchard School’s financial health. The money donated to these funds is permanently invested. The interest received from the investment supplies annual income to the operating budget while the remainder continues to be invested becoming a “living” legacy for the school.

More than 50 years ago, Eli Lilly provide Orchard with a gift of Lilly stock that set the stage for endowment growth. Since that time, generous donors have established or augmented endowed funds to support specific areas of interest such as faculty salaries, financial assistance, and professional development.

Ann N. Dean ’34 Alumni Financial Assistance Fund Established in 2001 by anonymous donors to honor Orchard alumna Ann N. Dean ’34 and to provide financial assistance to the children and grandchildren of alumni/ae.

Alumni Heritage Association Mr. Douglas Linsmith & Mrs. Ruth Linsmith '54 (Ruthie Adams) Abby Smith Legacy Scholarship Fund Abby and John Smith’s four children, Jessica ’95, Tyler ’97, Lily ’99 and J.B. ’01 are all Orchard graduates and attended The Orchard School for an accumulated total of 34 years. Throughout those years, Abby Smith was a constant presence in the halls of the school. She served on the Board of Trustees for six years, two of those years as Board Chair, and later served on the Board of Governors. Before her passing, she was very specific in her wish that any monetary remembrance of her be directed to a scholarship fund to give a child a chance to attend Orchard. Dr. Daniel Mallon & Mrs. Kathryn Mallon Al & Jeanette Stokely Fund The income from this fund shall be used to support programs designed to enhance the journalistic and verbal skills of Orchard students, preferably in programs designed to further journalistic skills in working with audio/visual media, such as radio and television.

Allen Whitehall Clowes Scholarship This fund was set up by a request from Allen W. Clowes through his estate. The income from there is to be used to provide a scholarship or scholarships or tuition assistance to needy or otherwise deserving children attending Orchard.

Anti-Bias Education Fund This fund was established in 1999

by Kerry Dinneen and Sam Sutphin ’68. Allocations for this endowed fund are used annually to support a visiting scholar in anti-bias education.

Betsy Dustman Scholarship Fund Established in 1999 to honor former Orchard teacher and Assistant Head of School and current Orchard Governor, Betsy Dustman, to further financial assistance.

Colby Danly Financial Aid Fund This fund was created by Charlotte Colby Danly as an endowment fund to benefit children and families who require tuition assistance.

Dennis Hollings Endowed Fund This fund was established June 5, 2000, from a CRT gift to Orchard from Dennis Hollings. This fund would support a student with maximum financial assistance — including not only tuition and fees, but also financial assistance for Kids Connect.

Early Childhood Learning Support Endowed Fund This teacher chair endowed fund was initiated in 2005 to ensure in perpetuity that Orchard has a learning support teacher dedicated to teachers and students in Preschool, Junior Kindergarten, and Kindergarten. Early detection of students who benefit from learning support is critical to maximizing every student’s learning potential.

Elaine C. Gust^ Emily Gilroy Scholarship Fund Established in 1989 in memory of Emily Gilroy ’92 to support financial assistance for eligible fifth graders.

ORCHARD PASSINGS Marcia A. Allington, teacher emerita at The Orchard School and founder of a program for gifted students, died Nov. 2, 2019, in West Lafayette, Ind. She is survived by her sister Nancy (Jim) Carley; brother Jim (Sue) Dodge; daughter Elizabeth (Frédéric Marchand) Allington; son John Allington ’85; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Brad, her parents, sister Marilyn Dodge, and brother Timothy Dodge.

Anthony D. “Tony” Bauer ’61 died March 20, 2020. He was born Sept. 2, 1947, in Indianapolis, the fourth child of Dr. Thomas Bryant and Elenita Mae (Bodwell) Bauer. Bauer was a 1965 graduate of North Central High School and owned Prism Productions, an Indianapolis stage design company. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Mary “Peggy” (Dowd) Bauer, son David Marcus Bauer and daughter Kristen Lynn Bauer; siblings Cynthia A. Bauer, Marcia L. (Alfred) Capuano, Thomas B. (Linda) Bauer, Elaine L. (David) Brown, and brotherin-law Fred M. Fehsenfeld; 10 nieces and nephews; and 18 grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his sister, Jane Elizabeth (Bauer) Fehsenfeld.

Janice B. Blankenhorn, 92, died May 20, 2020, in Indianapolis.

She was born June 10, 1927, in Gary, Ind., to Valdermar and Helen Brink. She graduated from Butler University in 1950 and married Fred Blankenhorn in 1952. Blankenhorn worked as a dietician at the Veterans’ Administration Hospital in Indianapolis and as a fourth-grade teacher in the Indianapolis Public Schools.

She is survived by her husband, Fred, and their children Philip Blankenhorn, Peter (Kristie) Blankenhorn, and Jill (Ken) Blankenhorn Schoch; grandchildren Stuart Blankenhorn ’02, Max (Allie) Blankenhorn ’05, Rebecca (John) Constantine, Corbin (Erica) Schoch, and A.J. Schoch; and great grandchildren Aidan, Jackson, and Chloe Constantine.

Robert (Bob) Earl Bonwell, 76, of Indianapolis, died April 2, 2020. He was the brother of Orchard staff member emerita Susie Main. He was born on Jan. 17, 1944, to the late Robert P. and Lucile (Gentry) Bonwell of Crawfordsville. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Susanne Bonwell; daughters Kristen Bonwell and Kari Jackson, son Michael (Erin) Bonwell, five grandchildren, and his sister Susie (Bill) Main. He loved to travel with family and friends, work with customers to expand and grow their businesses, and ride his Ranger on the open prairies of South Dakota rounding up cattle.

Joan (Jinny) Bork, 90, of Indianapolis, died Jan. 21, 2020.

Her career followed her lifelong passion for early childhood education. In 1972, she founded the Northminster Community Preschool and later taught pre-kindergarten for 16 years at The Orchard School. Bork is survived by her husband of 66 years, Bob, and her children Jim (Cathy Ferree) Bork and Lee Ann (Rob) Farmer and two grandchildren, Chris and Maddie Farmer.

Theresa “Terry” B. Bricker, 83, died Feb. 4, 2020. She was born June 23, 1936, in Indianapolis to Dr. Jacob K. and Henrietta Berman. She is survived by her children Leah Bricker, Sarah (Thomas) Putrim and Joseph (Gretchen) Bricker; her grandchildren Kemper ’14, Clarice ’17, and Mimi Bricker ’19, and Sophie, Olivia and Joseph Putrim; by her sister-in-law Ruth Berman, and by her nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert Benjamin “Ben” Bush III ’02, 32, died Feb. 9, 2020. He was born Sept. 28, 1987, in Indianapolis, to Debra Hovde Bush and Robert Benjamin Bush II, who survive him. Bush attended Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School. Bush also is survived by his sister Kelsey Lynn (fiancé Jared Shively) Bush of Columbus, Ohio; grandparents Patricia and Robert Benjamin Bush of Columbus, Ind., and aunts, uncles, cousins, and goddaughters Ingrid and Sophia Coghlin of Sweden. He was preceded in death by his beloved Gaga, Karen Sorenson Hovde.

Dr. Frank Dailey ’45 died Aug. 29, 2020, in Columbus, Miss., at age 89. Dailey was inspired to become a doctor after the dissection of a tadpole with his Orchard science teacher.

He served in the U.S. Air Force and practiced medicine in Indianapolis, California, Mississippi, and Saudi Arabia. He is survived by two sons, three daughters, four stepchildren, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jane Esterline Darmer ’43 died Feb. 26, 2020, at 89. She was born April 9, 1930, to the late Merrill B. and Marion (Cunningham) Esterline. Survivors include her son Robert A. (Pam) Darmer Jr., daughter Mary Jane Baksa, grandson Casey (Lorin) Baksa, brother Charles Esterline, sister-in-law Kate Esterline, brother-in-law Donald Darmer, and several nieces and nephews. Jane completed ninth grade at Shortridge High School, and then transferred to Tudor Hall, where she graduated in 1947.

Joan B. Elder, 93, of Naples, Fla., died Nov. 5, 2019. She was the mother of Orchard Board of Governors member William L. “Bo” Elder Jr. ’65. She was an avid community volunteer, philanthropist, and friend who loved to entertain. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, William L. Elder.

She is survived by her sister, Alice B. Weaver; her sons William L. “Bo” (Nancy) Elder Jr. ’65 and John B. Elder ’67; daughters Jane Elder (Fritz) Kunz ’69 and Mary Elder Schaff ’73; grandchildren Lindsay Elder Thornton, Louise “Weezie” Elder Combs, Laura Elder Antrim, Bowman Elder, Jeremy Elder, Jason Elder, Anne Knubbe Kunz, Carey Kunz, Kamman Kunz, John Hosack “Zach” Schaff, Madeline Schaff Conrad, and Bill Schaff; and eight great grandchildren.

Jack L. Fadely died April 18, 2020. He was a prominent Indianapolis psychologist who devoted his life to teaching, researching human development, and counseling. He is survived by his wife, Orchard staff member emerita Marjorie; daughter Debra (Kevin) Raber; son Mark (Dina) Fadely; grandchildren Claire (boyfriend Jared), Max (Krista), Jack, and Kirsten; two great-granddaughters, Mia and Ellie; siblings Edison (Georgia) Fadely, Joyce (Gary) Dillon, and Bob (Mary Lou) Fadely; his wonderful dog, Maggie; and three feral cats, Pretty Boy, Tiggy, and Kitty.

Carolyn Joan (Bare) Fuson, 93, died on Dec. 20, 2019, at St. Vincent Hospice in Indianapolis. She was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Coalmont, Ind., the daughter of Basil W. and Bertha (Stark) Bare. She is survived by her daughter Bonnie (Dr. Ernest) Fuson Smith, Orchard staff member emerita, and children Scott (Lori Abbott) Perry, Sam (Abby) Perry, Matthew (Lindsay Schimmoller) Smith, and Christopher (Allyson) Smith; Wayne “Rick” (Karen) Fuson and children Amy (Brett) Massillamany Howell, Emily (Jimmy Weber) Fuson, Matthew (Kate Dudley) Fuson, Rebecca Townsend, and Kaela and Kyle Crotchfelt; Jay (Joanie) Fuson and children Ashley Fuson, Benjamin (Lindsay) Fuson, Claire (Cem Gurkaynak) Fuson, and Logan and Sean Fuson; Craig (Anne) Fuson and children Kate (Ben) Fuelberth, and Tim and Dan Fuson; nieces and nephews Susan (Bruce) Sherwood, Pamela Bare, Mark (Suzy), Brad (Terri) Fuson, and Lynn (Joe) Fuson; special friends from the Stratford Retirement Community; and many longtime friends.

Jessica J. (VanSickle) Hederick ’86 of Noblesville died Feb. 8, 2020. She was born Sept. 12, 1971, in Rushville, Ind. Jessica is survived by her loving husband of 20 years, Brett Hederick; daughter Caroline Hederick ’17; mother Susan Green; father Philip VanSickle; brother Josh (Holli) VanSickle; mother-in-law Beverley (Gene) Scott; father-in-law John (Charlene) Hederick; brothers-in-law Jeffrey (Katherine) Hederick and Ryan (Emi) Smith; sister-in-law Stephany Smith; and grandmother Peggy Green. Jessica was preceded in death by her grandfather Jim Green; uncle Thomas Green; grandfather Charles Barnes; grandmother Dorothy Barnes; and stepfather, William Chaille.

Virginia G. Mosbaugh Horne ’78 died April 24, 2020, in Norway. Horne studied ballet at Butler University and worked as a social worker and at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, now Newfields. She is survived by her husband Lars Horne; father and stepmother, Phillip and Beth Mosbaugh; sister Annie Knapp; stepsiblings Buzz Mcturnan and Mary Lea Mcturnan; niece Daven Knapp and nephew William Knapp. She was preceded in death by her mother, Vera Mosbaugh.

Needham S. Hurst, a member emeritus of The Orchard School Board of Governors, died Jan. 1, 2020. Hurst earned a master’s of business administration degree from Indiana University before serving in the U.S. Army, and then joined the family 57business, N.K. Hurst Company, where he worked in sales and

as president until his retirement. Hurst is survived by his wife Mary Lou; daughter Cathy (Philip Meyer) and his son, Rick (Lisa); six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and eight greatgrandchildren.

Laurence G. Johnson ’59 died Oct. 21, 2019, at the age of 74. A graduate of Princeton, Johnson served in the U.S. Marine Corps on active duty and as a reserve and had a varied career, including as an oil drilling roughneck, a smokestack steeplejack, and as a longhaul truck driver. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Casey Johnson, and his parents, Nelson Johnson and Mary Scott Johnson. He is survived by his siblings, Molly Barbee and Jefferson Johnson. He was also cherished by three nephews and one niece.

James F. King ’48 died May 12, 2020, at the age of 86. King had a 35-year career as a manager for the Indiana Bell Telephone Co., and then a second career as a golf professional, spending 20 years at Wood Wind Golf Club in Westfield, Ind. He attended Shortridge High School and Butler University, where he met the love of his life and wife of 62 years, Joanne (Spivey) King, who survives him. He also is survived by his son J. Jeffrey King; daughter Jennifer (Phil) King Burk; and four grandchildren, twins Nicholas James Burk and Brandon Paul Burk and twins Abigail Judith Burk and Samantha Joanne Burk.

Rosalie M. Lange died Sept. 23, 2019, in Indianapolis. She is the grandparent of Orchard alumni. She is survived by her children Philo (Allison) Brendel III, Sanford (Pamela) McKee, Rosalie Lee (Ted Planje) Lange, and Brookings (Dennis) Lange Johnson; seven grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and her brothers Myron James McKee Jr. and William E. McKee II. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Philo Brendel Lange Jr., her parents Myron James and Helen Wiggins McKee, and her sister Carol McKee Littell.

Scott D. MacAllister died Nov. 30, 2019. He was born Jan. 14, 1952, in Fort Wayne, to the late David and Evelyn MacAllister. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Angela MacAllister; his three daughters, Amanda (Aymen Kaboub) MacAllister ’01, Abbey (Stephen) Cornelius ’06, Allison (Jordan Kanter) MacAllister ’08, and his energetic granddaughter, Norah MacAllister Kaboub.

Dr. Dean Maar died Nov. 27, 2019. He spent the bulk of his career treating accident victims with serious injuries in emergency rooms.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah; his children Emily, Megan ’13, and Sarah ’14; his father, Clyde, and his siblings: Wayne (Sharon), Janet (Tim) and Gary (Kandi).

Robert Vogt “Bob” Merrell, ’34, died May 31, 2020, in Newton Square, Penn., at 99. He was born Dec. 13, 1920. He was friends with Kurt Vonnegut and a huge fan of Hillis Howie and the Cottonwood Gulch Expedition (Prairie Trek). Merrell was married to Lenore S. “Lee” Merrell for 73 years. He is survived by his Orchard graduate and architect sons James S. Merrell and Peter V. Merrell.

Phillip S. Scheffsky, 80, died Sept. 4, 2019. He was born Jan. 6, 1939, in Miami, to Phillip H. and Dorothy Scheffsky, who preceded him in death. Scheffsky is survived by his wife Sherry, son Phillip (Jenny) Scheffsky ’98 and daughters Connie McDonald, Cynthia (Billy) King, and Jane (Timothy) James ’95, stepdaughter Lindsay (Brian) Hart, and brother David Scheffsky.

Thomas C. Schrader ’65 died Oct. 2, 2019. A graduate of Tarkio College in New York, Schrader enjoyed a career in real estate with F.C. Tucker and then the A.C. Schrader company, founded by his father. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Christine Schrader; sister Susan (Ron) Schrader Heath; son Christian Benton Schrader; stepsons Scott (Molly) Kinnett and Kyle (Lisa) Kinnett; grandsons Austin, Charlie, Brady, Riley, Murphy, Sam, JJ and Jackson; nephew Tim Heath; nieces Katie Heath and Kim Ebey; cousins Charlie Hall and Rusch Maury; sister-in-law Rosalie Held and brother-in-law Mark (Debbie) Schmidt.

W. Travis Selmier ’49 died Nov. 23, 2019, at the age of 85. He was born in 1934, the first child of Thomas and Charlotte Wise Selmier.

He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1952 and Butler University in 1957, where he majored in and taught dance. He is survived by his wife Elaine, son Travis (Madeleine), daughter Lisa (David) Cunningham, and three grandchildren, Jason Selmier and Shannon and Gabriella Cunningham. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Dean, son Rod, and grandson Grant as well as half-brothers Tom and Frank and half-sister Rosemary Wesselman.

Brooke E. Smith ’91, of Oakland, Calif., died Jan. 19, 2020, at age 42. She was born Aug. 26, 1977, in Indianapolis to George Pearson Smith Jr. and Susan Jane Leffel Smith, now of Zionsville.

Smith is survived by her parents; sisters Molly (Rich) Murphy of Carmel, and Amy (David) Fries of Santa Fe, N.M., and four adoring nieces and nephews. Aunts and uncles Patsy Kennedy, Barbara Wynne, Nancy and Hobby Wilson and Jim Leffel join her family in mourning, along with her many cousins and countless friends.

Dr. Lillian S. Stokes, member emerita of The Orchard School’s Board of Governors, died Nov. 24, 2019. She served more than 55 years as a registered nurse and worked as a nurse educator at IUPUI from 1972 until her retirement in 2008. Stokes is survived by her husband of 54 years, Robert; children Scott (Chandria) ’89 and Robyn; three grandchildren; aunt Ellomethea Dixon Hueston; sisters Queenie Taft and JoAnn (Monroe) Rountree; and brothers James (Geneva) Gatlin and Paul Gatlin.

Stephen A. Wainwright ’45 died Dec. 12, 2020, in Durham, N.C., at the age of 88. He was a renowned Duke University biologist who applied engineering principles to understand organismal design and who explored life through art. He is survived by his wife Charlotte; children Peter, Ian, and Jennifer; and grandchildren Dylan, Naomi, Yoshio, Savannah, Joshua, Ruth, Hope, Emma Caudle, Holly Caudle, and Gwen Caudle.

Dr. Sally D. Slowman Middleton, 66, died Jan. 24, 2020. Middleton was a physician who practiced medicine for more than 30 years, compassionately caring for countless patients. She is survived by her children Stephanie and Jimmy (Christa) ’02; her mother Micki; her brother Geoffrey (Lisa and Andrew), and her partner Michael.

Courtney Webster ’82 died Sept. 21, 2019, at 51. She was born April 14, 1968, in Alexandria, Va., to Tom Charles Huston and Brenda Lee (Courtney) Huston. Webster’s proudest achievements were her sons William (Will) and Daniel (Danny), who survive her.

She also is survived by her husband, Brian Webster; her parents; and brother Harry (Carla) Huston, as well as extended family and friends.

Ray J. Moyer, 92, died Feb. 16, 2020, in Vincennes, Ind. He was born July 22, 1927, in Sumner, Ill., the twin son of Clarence and Bernice Ackman Moyer. He served in World War II in the U.S. Navy and in the Korean War in the U.S. Army and worked for Marathon Oil for 35 years. He is survived by his wife Martha “Marty” Burnett; children Diane (Mark) Froning, Rick (Orchard Board of Governors member Cathleen Rooney) Moyer, Cheryl (Tom) Loftin and Radonna (Bud) Piper; and his grandchildren Lindsey Froning, Nate Moyer ’07, Allison Moyer ’08, Christopher Moyer ’11, Angela Rundle, Amber Piper and Taylor Piper and four great grandchildren.

Richard D. Wood, 93, died April 16, 2020, in Indianapolis. He was born in 1926 in Brazil, Ind., the youngest son of Howard T. and Dorothy (Norfolk) Wood. His 43-year career at Eli Lilly and Co. culminated in his service as chief executive officer and chairman of the board. Wood is survived by his daughters Catherine (William V. III) Wood Lawson and Marjorie Elizabeth Wood; three grandchildren, William V. (Stephanie Goodrid Lawson) Lawson IV, Andrew (Abby Lee) Wood Lawson and Anna Wood Peterson; two great-grandsons, including William Lawson ’27, and nieces and nephew Susan Wood Sitler, Nancy Willy, and Robert Wood Jr.

Joseph O’Brien, 92, died June 2, 2020, in Chicago. He was the father of Board of Trustee member Colleen (Jamie Merisotis) O’Brien, Gerry (Tracy) O’Brien, Bob (Donna) O’Brien, Peggy (Martin) Flood, Mary Beth O’Brien, Eileen (Chuck Dervarics) O’Brien and Joe (Lisa) O’Brien. He was the proud “Papa” of Tim, Ellen, Bobby and Jack O’Brien, Matt Flood, Kylie Rivet Flood, Kelly and Audrey Dervarics, Keelyn and Kaleigh O’Brien, Ben Merisotis ’17 and Elizabeth Merisotis ’22, Hailey Morris and Matthew Flood.58

Cathy A. Young ’78 died Oct. 20, 2019. She is survived by her husband Darryl E. Young; daughter Asiah D. (Gabriel) Emmons; son Cemon (Kayla) Young; six grandchildren, and her brother, Joseph (Bonnice) Craig Jr.
