We celebrated all of these accomplishments and more during 2018, which marked Orbis’s 20th anniversary in Ethiopia. You can read more about Orbis’s 20 years in Ethiopia on pages 12 and 13 of this report—and I hope you will because it is your support and partnership that made this transformative work possible.

Coinciding with the 20th anniversary celebration was the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital’s fifth visit to Ethiopia. This time, we held a three-week surgical training project during which more than 200 eye health professionals received training, 190 patients were examined, and 102 children and adults received treatment.

The Flying Eye Hospital also visited Barbados, Mongolia, and Peru in 2018. Altogether, 2,174 trainings were completed by doctors, nurses, and other eye health professionals during Flying Eye Hospital programs last year—a 174% increase over the year before.

Thanks to the generous support of our donors, the aircraft is equipped with the latest technologies for simulation training, live surgeries and lectures that can be broadcast around the world.

TRUJILLO, PERU We debuted our new simulation-only training for local doctors and health care professionals on board the Flying Eye Hospital in Trujillo.

The team raised awareness for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy (DR) together with the Instituto Regional de Oftalmología (IRO), the University of Iowa and the Center for Virtual Care at the University of California, Davis, Collins Aerospace (formerly known as UTC Aerospace Systems) and Simulated Ocular Surgery.

BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS We spearheaded a regional conference for eye health professionals from seven Caribbean countries—Barbados, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Trinidad—with a focus on cataract, glaucoma, strabismus and retina diseases.

ULAANBAATAR, MONGOLIA We visited Mongolia for the eighth time and carried out a threeweek surgical and simulation program. For the first time ever, we introduced simulation training onboard the Flying Eye Hospital in Mongolia. In just this one week, 47 health professionals received hands-on simulated training.

ELIMINATING BLINDING TRACHOMA Trachoma is the leading infectious cause of blindness in the world, and Ethiopia faces one of the highest burdens. Our work in the SNNPRS resulted in eliminating trachoma in six districts, with another six districts showing a significant decrease. However, the challenge still persists due to Ethiopia’s rapid population growth, from 65 million in 1998 to 105 million today.

An important part of our work is educating communities about eye health. In 2018, Orbis distributed the illustrated storybook The Singing Tree in Amharic to 5,000 school eye health clubs and children in Ethiopia for free, to encourage educators, parents and children to seek help when they identify vision problems.

Building skills through simulation In 2018, we rolled out an innovative simulation training program thanks to the generous support of Collins Aerospace (formerly known as UTC Aerospace Systems). Just as pilots learn to fly planes through simulation training, doctors can now learn and practice skills on our aircraft in a similar fashion.

We equipped the Flying Eye Hospital with the very latest technology, including virtual reality, artificial eyes and even highly sophisticated, life-like mannequins.

Mobile simulation trainings took place on board our Flying Eye Hospital during stops in Barbados, Mongolia and Peru. We also established ophthalmology simulation centers in two key regional teaching institutions in South America, at the National Institute of Ophthalmology in Lima, Peru, and at the Catholic University of Chile.

Providing eye care for the Rohingya Some 1.2 million Rohingya people, including many children, have taken shelter in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar district. Most of them have never had access to eye care and are extremely vulnerable.

Orbis was the first to provide eye care in a Rohingya refugee camp in southeastern Bangladesh. In partnership with the local government, hospitals and NGOs, Orbis established eye care centers for Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs) and their host community in Cox’s Bazar. The centers offer screenings, treatments, cataract surgeries and eye glasses. Orbis also trained community leaders to spot eye conditions and refer people to the screening centers. The program is funded by the Qatar Fund For Development (QFFD).

Using a real-time data management software called patient Information System (PIS), Orbis is analyzing patient data with the goal to reduce blindness across Bangladesh, especially among children. The findings were published in an IAPB report, together with the SEVA Foundation.

Building a network of vision centers in India Orbis has the largest network of dedicated eye centers for children in the world. We have 32 Children's Eye Centers (CECs) across 17 states in India as part of the India Childhood Blindness Initiative (ICBI).

In 2018, Orbis, along with its partners under the Childhood Blindness programs, inaugurated three new vision centers in Bihar and strengthened one vision center in West Bengal. Orbis currently helps to support 13 vision centers across India.

During the period, Orbis supported its three partners in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal to conduct 201,721 screenings of children.

We have supported partners to orient 658 community volunteers, who have helped identify children with eye problems.

The centers make quality eye care accessible to every child, regardless of the family’s socioeconomic background. They play a key role in raising awareness about eye health in communities and referring those in need to hospitals for surgery and treatment for free or at reduced costs.

Orbis leads study among Indian tea-pickers Orbis led the first joint research study that explored the link between clear vision and productivity, in collaboration with VisionSpring, Clearly and the Queens University Belfast. The PROSPER (Productivity Study of Presbyopia Elimination in Rural-dwellers) study monitored the work of 750 mainly female tea-pickers in Assam, India.

Productivity can be improved with just a pair of glasses — which can cost as little as $1.50.

The daily weight of tea picked by those with eye glasses increased by over 5 kilos.

Productivity increased by almost 32 percent when vision correction was provided to workers over 50. This translates directly into increased income for the tea-pickers and their families.

If the improvement were replicated across India’s crop industry, it would mean an extra $20 billion in growth from productivity gains alone.
