Dragonfly Arts on Broadway – A Local Art Experience

Creating Public Art: Utility Box Art Display Program Returns After a successful pilot project in 2016, the Utility Box Art Display Program will continue in 2017. Led by the Town’s Art and Culture Committee, the public art project recognizes local artists, celebrates the Town’s culture and history, and promotes Orangeville as an arts and culture hub for the region. Through the program, functional utility boxes are transformed into colourful works of art for the community to enjoy. “Public art offers residents and visitors a unique way to experience Orangeville,” says Councillor Sylvia Bradley who chairs the Arts & Culture Committee. “In addition to beautifying our Town, this program provides an opportunity for local artists to connect with their community and share their interpretation of the Town’s cultural and historical values.” Currently, three Downtown area utility boxes are wrapped in art. Each piece creatively captures some of Orangeville’s most well-known attributes, including Mill Creek and Town Hall. The completed boxes are located along Broadway at Second Street, Mill Street, and John Street. Up to four utility boxes will be wrapped under the 2017 competition and will expand the presence of the art throughout Town in an effort to engage with more residents and visitors. Utility boxes included in the 2017 program are located at the intersections of: • Clara Street and Broadway • First Street and Elizabeth Street • First Street and Hansen Boulevard • Hansen Boulevard and Amelia Street More details and an application for artists can be found at http://www.orangeville.ca/news/2017/03/01/utility-box-art-display-program-call-for-artists

Dragonfly Arts on Broadway was established in 2002 by two local artists who had a vision of promoting Orangeville’s art community. Over its 15-year history, the popular shop has become known for its wide selection of unique art pieces, its superior customer service and its ability to create an exceptional experience for every visitor. Dragonfly Arts on Broadway features the works of over 200 Canadian artists, many of them local. The careful curation of this unique collection is managed by business owner and founder, Joan Hope. Jewellery, pottery, paintings, sculptures, and more are all available to suit every style, need and budget. Both established and emerging artists are well-represented, demonstrating Ms. Hope’s ability to offer a diverse and complementary selection of pieces. Great care is also taken to display art throughout the store. The building’s front window, known as “The Window on Broadway” as well as the original brick “Feature Wall” are back drops for rotating shows featuring the works of selected artists. Dragonfly Arts is also home to artist studios where, in addition to seeing art on display, visitors have the opportunity to meet the artists, watch them work and learn about the artist’s techniques. “Creating access to artists enriches our customers’ experience,” says Ms. Hope. “They feel more connected to the art and enjoy a deeper appreciation of how it is made.” The shop’s location in Orangeville’s historic downtown is the ideal venue for this business. “Downtown Orangeville is a destination for our customers,” says Ms. Hope. “We are part of a unique assortment of shops, restaurants and attractions that complement each other and create memorable experiences for visitors. This is the ideal spot for us.” Location, service and selection, all contribute to the success of this locally adored shop. Like the artists it showcases, Dragonfly Arts on Broadway skillfully combines these important elements to delight its customers with unique experiences.
