The Art Walk of Tree Sculptures
Significant Investments in Local Arts and Culture Orangeville’s vibrant cultural scene has long been supported by local residents and businesses. During the past year, the efforts of the Town’s local arts and culture organizations have also been recognized with significant investment in the sector. In June 2015, Orangeville was selected as one of five regions in Ontario to participate in the 2015/16 artsVest initiative, a program designed to encourage private business investment in the arts and to build sustainable sponsor relationships within the community. A recommendation of the Town’s Municipal Cultural Plan, artsVest participation provides in-depth training, matching incentive funds and community networking events to local arts and culture organizations. Following a competitive process, five local arts organizations were selected to receive matching grant funding and additional business management training through mentorship – Theatre Orangeville, Orangeville Blues and Jazz Festival, Orangeville Art Group, Headwaters Arts, and Dufferin Arts Council all benefitted from the program. Orangeville’s five arts organizations created 15 partnerships with local businesses and exceeded their goal of raising $20,000 in sponsorship funds – in fact, they more than tripled it, raising $61,050 from our business community. Through support of The Government of Canada, Government of Ontario and the Ontario Trillium Foundation, a total of $23,054 in matching grant funds was invested in the local community. These matching funds, combined with the sponsorship dollars raised from local businesses, created a total investment of $84,104 into Orangeville’s arts, culture, and heritage sector. On June 16, 2016, Business for the Arts and the local arts community celebrated the success of artsVest in Orangeville at Town Hall.
Tourism Week May 29 - June 4 Tourism has a tremendous impact on Orangeville’s economy with many local businesses benefitting from the influx of visitors each year. The week of May 29 to June 4 was proclaimed as Tourism Week in Orangeville. Celebrating the proclamation were Arts & Culture Chair Councillor Sylvia Bradley and Economic Development Manager Ruth Phillips at the recently erected Mill Creek Signage. The creek signage installed near the bridges on Mill, Bythia and Wellington Streets each tell a unique story about the importance of Mill Creek in the evolution of the Town. The signage was designed to complement the Town’s tourism oriented way-finding signage.

The Town of Orangeville, represented by Councillor Don Kidd (right) unveiled the “Mr. Lacrosse” tree sculpture to pay tribute to the late Terry Sanderson and Northmen Lacrosse. The 8.5-foot sculpture sits at the entrance to the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre at 6 Northmen Way with a lacrosse player depicted wearing Terry’s #19 jersey. Orangeville is the home of lacrosse and Terry Sanderson was a Canadian lacrosse icon. Joining Councillor Kidd are Josh, Kari, and Susan Sanderson.
Orangeville, as the hub of a talented and diverse artistic community, has put art front and centre with its Art Walk of Tree Sculptures. The 54 unique art forms on the Town’s streetscape have become a major tourism attraction. Tree sculptures add human interest, promote art, and bring a whole lot of character to the community. From historical figures to whimsical creations, the Art Walk of Tree Sculptures features unique pieces of art while bringing new life to former healthy trees. All kinds of creations can be found on the walk. For instance, combining a little culture and personality is “The Dancer” on Town Line. With her hand in the air she is pictured mid-twirl. “The Musicians” in the downtown’s Alexandra Park pays tribute to the Town’s Blues & Jazz Festival – one of the top 100 festivals in Ontario. “The Conductor” – a portly figure, stands with one hand in his pocket and the other holding his pocket watch – as he welcomes tourists on the Credit Valley Explorer Tourist Train at the Town Line station. Orangeville is also the home of lacrosse in Canada, so be sure to find our newest sculpture “Mr. Lacrosse” at 6 Northmen Way (the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre). Note the detail in the piece by artist Robbin Wenzoski, and the metal lacrosse stick incorporated into the sculpture. Walking or driving, the sculptures provide a free and fun adventure throughout the town and offer residents and visitors year-round access to wonderful, unique public art. Self-guided walking or driving tours are popular and easy to navigate with the Town’s Art Walk of Tree Sculptures brochure, available online. Canada Day Celebrations • July 1, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Town of Orangeville invites you to celebrate Canada Day July 1, 2016, 12 - 5 p.m. at Alder Street Recreation Centre. Family fun activities include an opening ceremony and cake cutting, free family swims, face painting and inflatable activities as well as the President's Choice SuperDogs shows at 12:30, 2, and 3:30 p.m. The day concludes with a spectacular fireworks display over Island Lake at 10 p.m.
Movie Night in the Park • July 8, August 12, 9 p.m. Grab your family and friends and head over to the Alder Street Sports Field for a free screening of a first run popular movie! Bring your chairs and blankets and snuggle up for a great show under the stars! The movie will begin at dusk (9 p.m.) and snacks will be available for sale at the concession stand. Rotary Ribfest • July 15 to 17 Join the Orangeville Rotary Club for their seventh annual Ribfest from July 15 - 17, 2016 at the Alder Street Recreation Centre, for a weekend of fantastic ribs and great music! Orangeville Founders’ Day & Urban Slide Event • July 23, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Founders’ Day fun includes the Shining Stars talent competition, live entertainment, a sidewalk sale, and street performers. The main stage will showcase live music performed throughout the day and evening by a wide range of local talent -- dancing in the streets is encouraged! 2016 Founders’ Cup Tournament • August 15 to August 21 Orangeville will play host to the 2016 Canadian Junior B Lacrosse Championship Tournament this August. This prestigious tournament will run from Monday, August 15 to Sunday, August 21 at the Alder Street Recreation Centre. Teams from across Canada will vie for the Founders’ Cup over the course of a seven-day competition.
Cultural Entrepreneurship Pilot Project results in successful creative businesses In January of this year, the Orangeville & Area Small Business Enterprise Centre (SBEC) announced the launch of a new training and mentorship pilot project targeting the arts and culture sector. The Cultural Entrepreneurship Program, a partnership of the Town of Orangeville and the Province of Ontario, was established to assist and support local entrepreneurs in starting or expanding businesses within the creative sector. The initiative was very well received locally and a total of 21 participants were accepted to participate. During the six-month program, each participant was matched with a mentor for one-to-one guidance, 17 business training sessions were delivered, and 16 participants completed business plans as part of a competition to gain grants of up to $5,000. All entrepreneurs involved in the program benefitted from the exceptional training and mentorship provided. Successful grant recipients included: Sharyn Ayliffe, Sharyn Ayliffe Creative; Carrole Blakeman, Copper Fox Designs; Frederic Chartier, Freddy’s Crepes; RaDeana Montgomery, RAM Media; Beckie Morris, R&S Creative; Jennifer Osborn, All Sorts Acres; Ann Randeraad, Ann Randeraad Pottery; Mag Ruffman/Daniel Hunter, Ruffman Entertainment; CJ Shelton, Dancing Moon Designs; and Leisa Way, Way to Go Productions. The Town of Orangeville congratulates all of the Cultural Entrepreneurship participants for their hard work and commitment!
Things To Know Summer Company students turn ideas into profit-making ventures This summer eight enterprising young entrepreneurs will learn what it’s like to be their own boss, thanks to Summer Company 2016. The Orangeville & Area Small Business Enterprise Centre (SBEC), in partnership with the Province of Ontario, is once again offering this unique and exciting program to provide local youth with funding and guidance as they start up and run their own summer companies.
