A New Formula for Success

THE HAPPINESS ADVANTAGE Our most commonly held formula for success is broken. Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we’ll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, then happiness will follow.

But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward. Happiness, positivity and optimism fuels success, not the other way around. When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive. This isn’t just an empty mantra. This discovery has been repeatedly borne out by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience, management studies, and the bottom lines of organizations around the globe.

In the USA these workshops for staff, teachers and students have increased staff engagement, increased academic results, reduced absenteeism, teacher attrition and student truancy and generally a far more positive school environment.

POSITIVE IMPACT IN EDUCATION Research shows that when we are positive our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient and productive. The Gallup Student Poll released in March 2016, indicates high school students who are engaged and hopeful are about 1.6 times more likely to report that they are headed to a two-year or four-year college after high school, compared to disengaged and discouraged students.

Ninth grade students getting positive psychology training reported they were more positive and engaged. These student’s teachers reported that students who participated in the program had improved skills related to learning and engagement in school; including increased curiosity, love for learning and creativity as well as improvement in social skills such as empathy, cooperation, assertiveness and self-control. Positive psychology in other studies has also been shown to improve student grades. (Seligman, Ernst, Gillham, Reivich,& Waters 2105) From Cardinal School Superintendent Joel Pedersen: When I became superintendent of Cardinal Community School District, a district serving five small communities in southeast Iowa, staff, teachers and even students, had adopted the minimalist belief that We’re just Cardinal.

That negative outlook shaped how the entire community viewed itself. It formed the lens through which everyone viewed both expectations and outcomes. Enter Shawn Achor’s Happiness Advantage | Orange Frog.

The Orange Frog is a parable by Achor about a frog named Spark who lives on an island that was experiencing “the thrall” and a crisis of identity much like our district. In the story, Spark turns orange the more positive he becomes. Spark however is also looked upon with a certain amount of suspicion by other frogs that question his motivations. Eventually, Spark spreads his positivity to all the other frogs overcoming the thrall — which is the same thing we’ve done in at Cardinal.

POSITIVE IMPACT IN EDUCATION All of our teachers and support staff have completed the workshop, and we ensure all students receive copies of the book and a stuffed version of Spark. This makes it not only fun but also effective because all of us know the metaphors and speak the same language.

I believe we’ve proven the impact of positive belief and action in K-12 education and I’m proud of the results. ACT scores of Cardinal students have increased by three composite points since 2009, a 15 percent increase. At the same time, average daily attendance has moved up from 92 percent to 95 percent.

Since focusing on positive psychology and school happiness, we have had a net change in funding exceeding $1 million since 2005 from gains in student open enrollment and we were named by the Des Moines Register as one of the Top 150 Workplaces in Iowa in 2015. ~ Joel Pedersen (School Superintendent Cardinal School District)

GOOD FOR BUSINESS; GOOD FOR EDUCATION In 2010 Shawn Achor published the Happiness Advantage detailing the research that launched a revolution in the way we look at success, engagement and the role of positive emotions. Simultaneously, the Happiness Advantage | Orange Frog (HA | OF) workshop was already being conceived. In 2011 the first edition of “The Orange Frog” was published. This parable was written to distill the essential lessons from Shawn’s research into an easy-to-read narrative designed to support the workshop training – and to leverage what we know about how the brain learns. In 2012, the first workshop was piloted at Nationwide Insurance. 2013 marked the official launch of HA | OF workshop experience. During 2014-2015 over 100 corporate and government organizations across the world experienced the Orange Frog. During this time the HA | OF was continuously and rigorously tested and improved.

In The Fall of 2015 ITLN conducted its first test of the workshop in the education arena with Cardinal School District in Eldon Iowa. AASA has hosted 4 sold-out public workshops, more than 50 school districts have participated in the HA | OF programs, bringing it to thousands of educators in only a few short months. The Magic of the Orange Frog Workshop

Caught between two worlds, Spark was exactly like every other frog in his pond with one notable exception.

Happiness Advantage | Orange Frog Workshop™. By the end of the story, readers see and feel pressures they recognize in their day-to-day lives. They also witness the most remarkable transformation that takes place when Spark finally chooses to adopt an orange way of life. Spark emerges from a tadpole with a slight but noticeable orange spot.

Participants at the Train the Trainer will be part of the workshop experience in the first instance and as such we would like to propose that we have at least eight trainers plus say 50 staff involved in a special two day Orange Frog Workshop - including senior leaders and a guiding team (‘Culture Ambassadors’ - whose mission is to ensure the implementation of the principles in the workshop). We will provide an extremely comprehensive After Action Report to assist with the implementation of the tools plus provide an advanced start for the Cultural Ambassadors for when other staff undertake the workshop. ORANGE FROG STAFF PRICING POLICY The third day would be specifically with the 4+ trainers to learn the specifics for delivering the workshop.

The next phase will be the certification process. This involves the purchase of 500 kits at $199 per person and ITLN will provide it’s professional services free of charge throughout the certification days. Between the Train the Trainer and Certification our expert coach Devin Hughes will coach by phone the trainers and provide ’homework’ in preparation for the certification process. Day 1 of the certification involves coaching and rehearsals in readiness for the Trainers presentations. The next two days (per 2 internal facilitators) trainers will pair up and provide a workshop to approx. 24 participants on each day – 08.30 to 3.00pm.

It has motivated me to stick to the plan I have chosen throughout the year.

Simply hearing it stated that happiness is a choice has completely changed my outlook on work and life in general. The happiness advantage has taught me to retrain my brain to appreciate the positive in my every day. Among the findings in the preliminary report: ● Social, emotional, cognitive, linguistic, and academic development are “deeply intertwined” and “all are central to learning and success,” says the report, citing a previous consensus statement by the commission’s panel of scientists. ●

ORANGE FROG FAMILY READING GUIDE While the positive psychology initial training was focused on staff, they have individually been taking the practices and principles they have found meaningful to their students and applied them in their classrooms. They were eager to include the principles more systematically into their work through the lessons developed by the Social Emotional Learning task force.

To increase the family connections between social-emotional learning at school and at home, each District family will be provided with a a family guide that supports deeper application of social- emotional learning and action plan journal for the entire family.

BOARD OF EDUCATION Local School Boards will take the lead with the introduction of positive psychology deeply embedded into each school districts academic and social and emotional well being of students..

Local school boards (also known as boards of education, school committees, school directors, or trustees) are elected—or occasionally appointed—to be leaders and champions for public education in their states and communities.

The most important responsibility of school boards is to work with their communities to improve student achievement in their local public schools. School boards derive their power and authority from the state. In compliance with state and federal laws, school boards establish policies and regulations by which their local schools are governed hence their importance in delivery optimistic and optimistic school cultures.

School Boards have a primary responsibility to support the whole child, to ensure the academic and social-emotional success of each student. Boards can achieve this responsibility by continuing to design high-quality lessons that engage and challenge all students. Boards will also be supporting the implementation of a new social and emotional learning curriculum, which builds on our current practices in the schools, ensuring that students are healthy, safe, engaged and supported and embed Positive Psychology Principles.

In addition, we will look for community partnership opportunities focused on supporting the academic and social-emotional success of our students. Working together, we can create a community where children are valued and supported.

SPARK OF LIGHT Spark of Lights is an interconnected framework for living and leading using research and methodologies from The Happiness Advantage, Orange Frog and Big Potential.

The purpose is to develop and showcase each school district and communities Virtuous Cycle - a positive feedback loop whereby making others better leads to new resources, energy, and experiences that make you better, fueling the cycle again for the school community – continuously sustaining its businesses, citizens and guests to bigger potential.

PARENT UNIVERSITY Parent University is a community collaborative led by Schools to help parents become full partners in their children’s education. The goal of Parent University is to increase parent involvement in the schools and empower parents to raise children who are successful in school, and in life.

Workshops are held in schools, public libraries, YMCAs, houses of worship, businesses and other community locations. ORANGE FROG CASE STUDY SCHAUMBURG SD54 Why would a district whose main purpose is to educate its students invest in happiness? Because happiness fuels success, not the other way around. The nearly decade long research of Shawn Achor became the basis for this work. Achor’s research proves that when we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work. This discovery has been repeatedly borne out by rigorous research in psychology and neuroscience, management studies, and the bottom lines of organizations around the globe.

Knowing this research would impact the way staff viewed themselves and the work they are doing, the principles of the Happiness Advantage authored by Shawn Achor became the focus of the district. Prior to the start of the school year, the staff was brought together to begin the year to hear a very poignant message. They matter and we will focus on them, both personally and professionally. By simply focusing on our adults and helping them be and feel better, we knew we would simultaneously be helping every student they support.

ORANGE FROG CASE STUDY SCHAUMBURG SD54 Background For a period of many years District 54 has made it a point to monitor and improve our school culture. We regularly evaluate our strengths and areas for growth and put plans in place to improve the culture so we can best help our students learn. Our investment in our staff’s personal and professional growth around positive psychology continues to support our school and district cultures.

The work of District 54 is focused around our academic goals and our emphasis on supporting social- emotional learning. Given that “happiness fuels success”, Shawn Achor’s research on positive psychology has been a focus starting with administration in 2016, with all staff throughout the 2017- 2018 school year, and most recently, as a vital piece to the development of the social-emotional learning curriculum.

In order to accomplish these goals, a structure was developed to support training all staff on the research and implications for them personally and professionally. The timeline below outlines the scope of the training and the ongoing work to ensure this is deeply embedded with supporting culture and developing the whole child.

Fall Administrative team read The Happiness Advantage and trainers were brought in to support deep understanding at an administrative level.

May District 54 developed a team of seven internal trainers that completed the comprehensive training regimen in order to facilitate the training across the district.

August District 54 convened the entire staff for an afternoon session with world renowned author, researcher, and presenter, Shawn Achor. He supported with kicking-off our journey to help ensure all District 54 staff grow in the area of positive psychology.

ORANGE FROG CASE STUDY SCHAUMBURG SD54 August - October As a follow up to the initial district-wide kickoff on the Happiness Advantage, all district staff participated in a full-day session of reflection and ongoing work related to the seven principles of positive psychology that fuel success and performance at work. These full-day training sessions were facilitated by the District 54 trainers, for District 54 staff.

October An overview of the work was presented to the Illinois Region 37 PTA, as well as, lunch supervisors participated in half-day sessions.

October Reflection sessions conducted with building leaders following staff training session. Below outlines the focus of these reflection sessions: • Ongoing leadership meetings focused on collaboration and deeper understanding of the tactics and principles.

• Monthly building based sessions led by staff to learn and practice the seven principles of positive psychology identified in the Happiness Advantage.

• School Leadership Teams and Happiness Advantage School based teams purchased and read the Happiness Advantage to increase their depth of understanding.

• March 2018 was celebrated as Happiness Month across the twenty-eight schools and the Rafferty Administration Center.

Each school created a monthly calendar filled with opportunities to practice the five happiness habits and increase social support.

Social - Emotional Learning .In the fallowing fall, a Social Emotional Learning Task Force consisting of ninety-eight staff from across all schools and grade levels was formed and focused on the following goals: • Developing SEL Essential Outcomes based on the core principles of positive psychology, resilience research findings and Illinois’ SEL Standards.

• Reviewing SEL programmatic options and determining best instructional resources to support the effective teaching of D54’s SEL Essential Outcomes.

• Developing a scope and sequence for early childhood-eighth grade lessons that support student mastery of District 54’s SEL Essential Outcomes. Keeping the core principles of Positive Psychology and resilience research findings central in the development of these lessons.

• Developing guidelines for how to embed SEL instruction into the school day.

• Developing a staff training plan based on the above.

Throughout the winter, the SEL Task Force met and developed consistent grade level Essential Outcomes for SEL early childhood through eighth grade. In addition, weekly lessons were designed to continue the work of developing student social-emotional development grounded in the core principles of positive psychology.
