HB council backs compromise with its city attorney
the GGPD, police were summoned at about 2:47 p.m. to an address on Glenhaven in reference to “a female in distress.” While en route to
the location, word came that there was a fatality. Officers discovered a woman with major trauma to her face and head area. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Issue to be continued to Jan. 18 At a long meeting that was – by turns – contentious and conciliatory, the Huntington Beach City Council continued a controversial proposal on legal advice to the first meeting in January. The council voted 7-0 in favor of moving the issue into a closed session to iron out the process of how the council could direct City Attorney Michael Gates to hire an out-
side attorney to provide the council with a “second opinion” when desired. After the council heard dozens of speakers and sometimes-testy exchanges between some councilmembers and Gates, the panel backed off on the agenda item that had suggested that the council could select “an outside legal firm that would directly report to and support the city council.” The intent of the approved motion was to include Gates – who is elected directly by voters – in the process and not create a rival legal entity allied to the council. There’s a history of some friction between the sometimes outspoken Gates and the council, one sharpened by the emergence of a new majority on the council since the 2020 municipal election. ‘Winter surge’ covid stats hitting the OC The count of confirmed new coronavirus cases in Orange County surged in Tuesday’s report. According to the county health care agency, the total jumps from Monday’s three-day average of 449 to 652 today. Deaths went from two to four and hospitalizations declined from 195 to 188. The number of patients being treated for COVID-19 in intensive care units remained steady at 56 for the third consecutive day. To date, Orange County has had 320,838 cases, of which 306,508 are considered recovered. The total number of deaths is at 5,857. On the national level, The New York Times is reporting that – over a 14day period – new cases are averaging a 20 percent
