Main St. may become “Flower Street” for Tet

The downtown area of Garden Grove is known as a location for special events such as the Strawberry Festival in the Village Green park and the Elvis Festival on Main Street.

Now a third major gathering is planned for January: the “Flower Street on Historic Main Street.” Plans call for turning one block of Main, between Acacia Parkway and Garden Grove Boulevard, into a colorful flower extravaganza in keeping with similar events held in Vietnam.

The “Flower Street” would blossom on Saturday, Jan. 21 and Sunday, Jan. 22 in step with the Tet lunar new year, “The Year of the Cat.” Several organizations are partnering to produce the event.

In defense of the raises, Gates said that he hasn’t received an increase in compensation since May 2019.

There was considerable difference of opinion on where such a raise would put Gates in comparison to other city attorneys.

One person speaking during public comments claimed that the proposal would make Gates the second highest-paid city attorney in the state.

A rebuttal suggesting that several other city attorneys in Southern California did receive more money prompted Bolton to say, “I think those numbers were pulled out of thin air.”

After considerable discussion, Strickland called for the vote.

Also Tuesday night, the council voted 5-2 in favor of Van Der Mark’s proposal for a report on homelessness, anti-camping and anti-loitering laws.

Murder suspect is arrested

In observance of the Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays, Garden Grove City Hall and the H. Louis Lake Senior Center will be closed from Monday, Dec. 26, 2022 through Monday, Jan. 2, 2023.

Street sweeping services will not be provided on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2022 and Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023. Streets will be swept as scheduled on all other days.

There will be no street sweeping enforcement from Monday, Dec. 26, 2022 through Monday, Jan. 2, 2023. Street sweeping enforcement will resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. Trash pickup will not be provided on Monday, Dec. 26, 2022 and Monday, Jan. 2, 2023. Trash pickup will be delayed by one day for the remainder of those weeks.

Republic Services will provide free pick up of holiday trees during a three-week period, beginning Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022 through Saturday, Jan. 14, 2023.

Trees must be out by 7 a.m. on regular trash collection days.

Flocked trees are not recyclable and are not eligible for the free collection, but may be disposed of in the regular trash container or by scheduling a bulky item pick up.

A 33-year-old man from Temecula was arrested on Saturday for the murder of a 31-year-old Los Angeles man in Huntington Beach earlier this month.

According to Jessica Cuchilla, public information officer for the HBPD, Tyrell Avion Lee was arrested and charged with the killing of Jimmy Sengpaseauth on Dec. 5.

Lee was located by detectives in Moreno Valley and arrested.

He was taken to Orange County and booked at the HBPD jail, The apprehension of Lee brought to an end an incident that began around 8 p.m. on Dec. 5 when police responded to reports of shots fired in the 5200 block of Tasman Drive.

Arriving officers found the victim – now identified as Sengpaseauth – dead from a gunshot wound.

With a name like Winn, you know she had a pretty good chance when she entered the California Casualty $10,000 Staycation Giveaway. Appropriately, Kathryn Winn, a teacher at Morningside Elementary School in Garden Grove, won the top prize from among 23,000 educators across the nation.

She received the prize just in time for the holiday recess.

California Teachers Association President Toby Boyd, Garden Grove Education Association President Bridget Holdermann, Garden Grove Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Lisa Schwartz and California Casualty representatives were in on the surprise and attended to congratulate Winn.

Zelenskyy will visit U.S., speak to Congress

Making his first trip outside of his country, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will visit Washington on Wednesday. He will meet with President Joe Biden and address Congress, according to the Associated Press.

The visit will be taking place just as Congress prepares to

vote on the end-of-the-year budget, which includes an estimated $45 billion in aid to Ukraine.

Additionally, the U.S. is planning to ship Patriot anti-missile batteries to Ukraine, which is being bombarded by Russian missiles and drones aimed at infrastructure such as energy and heating.

Trump tax returns will be released

The Ways and Means Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives will released six years of former president Donald Trump’s income tax returns, according to The New York Times.

The Times also reported that Democrats are saying that the Internal Revenue Service violated its own policy by not

auditing the first two years of Trump’s term.

Also in the news … Aaron Dean, a White police officer in Fort Worth, Texas was sentenced on Tuesday to nearly 11 years and 10 months in prison for the 2019 fatal shooting of Atatiana Jefferson, 28, a Black woman.

Dean shot her through the window of her home, according to USA Today, by the officer as he was responding a call from a neighbor about an open front door.

The 1989 rom-com “When Harry Met Sally” is one of 25 films chosen this year to enter the National Film Registry, a list that ranges from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” to an 1898 silent documentary, long thought lost, about the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans.

Also chosen this year for preservation: Marvel’s “Iron Man,” John Waters’ “Hairspray,” Brian de Palma’s “Carrie” and the 1950 “Cyrano de Bergerac” starring Jose Ferrer, whose performance made him the first Hispanic actor to win a best actor Oscar.

The registry is housed at the Library of Congress, which since 1988 has selected movies

for preservation based on their cultural and historic importance.

This year’s picks bring the total number of films in the registry to 850 – many of which are among the 1.7 million films in the library’s collections.

The oldest film selected this year is the 1898 “Mardi Gras Carnival,” a silent-era documentary with the earliest known footage of the carnival in New Orleans. A copy was recently found at the Eye Filmmuseum in the Netherlands. Showing floats, spectators and marchers at a parade, the film is one of nine documentaries chosen, covering topics like the Attica prison rebellion, female union workers, mental health treatment, LGBTQ history and others.

The Rams were cold up there in Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – The Los Angeles Rams have piled up far more injuries than wins during a Super Bowl title defense that never really had much chance of success.

They wasted no time adding to that injury list Monday night while setting a dubious mark with their 10th loss, matching the most ever by a defending Super Bowl champion.

Rams center Brian Allen injured a calf on the first play from scrimmage in a 24-12 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The latest setback dropped the Rams’ record to 4-10, matching the highest loss total by any defending Super Bowl champ.

When John Elway retired after leading Denver to consecutive Super Bowl titles in the 1997 and 1998 seasons, the Broncos finished 6-10 in 1999.

Injuries have decimated the Rams’ depth and prevented them from approaching their success from last season. Without Allen on the line, Rams quarterback Baker Mayfield was sacked five times by a Green Bay (6-8) defense that had struggled to establish a pass rush for much of the season.

Mayfield was starting in part because of injuries to quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and John

Wolford. Stafford, who led the Rams to the Super Bowl title last season, is expected to miss the rest of the season with a spinal cord bruise.

Many of the Rams’ other big names also are missing.

Three-time NFL defensive player of the year Aaron Donald missed a third straight game Monday with a high ankle sprain. All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp is expected to miss the rest of the season with a sprained ankle.

Orangewood Academy may be a small school by comparison to the public schools that surround it.

But the private institution at the eastern edge of Garden Grove often punches above its weight in athletics, especially in basketball .where its teams have turned into CIF-SS powerhouses.
