CORAL ???? I am pleased to share the Spring issue of Design OC, Orange County’s décor and design magazine. In this issue, Editor Karine Monié showcases outstanding examples of design, décor and architecture in our community. We feature a variety of styles, from beachfront retreats to a mid-century modern Eichler home in Orange. You can also take inspiration from commercial design, with our profile of the new boutique Hotel Joaquin in Laguna Beach. And for all who are fans of the home renovation shows on TV, we share a “before and after” project as well. In celebration of Spring, we highlight the outdoor living that is such an integral part of the OC experience, including pools, spas, and landscape tips. We also focus on three popular trends in home decor, including the color of the year, living coral. While the folks at the Pantone Color Institute say “Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment”, it’s a bit too retro Palm Springs for my taste—use it sparingly. Finally, throughout the issue, we are proud to share information about some of the leading design, décor, and service providers in Orange County. These companies and talented individuals have the vision to make your design dreams a reality. I encourage you to contact them, and be sure to share that you read about them in Design OC. As always, I welcome your feedback and suggestions of what you would like to see in future issues of Design OC and Orange Coast magazines. Sincerely,

Since it’s humble beginnings, Jonathons Coastal Living has served Orange County as one of the very best in luxury furniture and design by providing clients with homes they feel excited to go to at the end of the day and look forward to sharing with friends and family. Our showroom and interior design firm were established in 2001 by husband and wife team, Jamie and Franco Bernal, who as a young couple bonded over their love for design. Both coming from families in the industry, their background and expertise led them to the natural decision to begin a company of their own. Today, we feature a carefully curated collection of high quality furnishings and accessories, giving us the ability to showcase the most current design trends and allow our clients the freedom to hand select their furniture pieces. This gives them the chance to see each product in a home-like setting to personally test and feel each fabric, finish and gloss. And with 15,000 square feet, there is plenty to choose from! We’re passionate about our work and are happy to say we’ve been designing inspired living in Orange County for 18 years and we can’t wait for more. Come see us in Fountain Valley at Euclid and I-405.

BOOK

CELEBRATING CALIFORNIA MIDCENTURY MODERN DESIGN

T

hrough 350 images of furniture, ceramics, metalwork, architecture, graphic and industrial design, film, textiles, fashion, and 10 essays, “California Design, 1930-1965” explores midcentury modern design in the Golden State. As designer Greta Magnusson Grossman (1906-1999) noted in 1951, California design was “not a superimposed style, but an answer to present conditions. … It has developed out of our own preferences for living in a modern way.” Edited by Wendy Kaplan, Department Head and Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and published by the MIT Press, the book is chronologically organized, starting with the rise of California modern design from 1930-1941 to its dissemination from 1945-1965. During these four decades, architects such as Richard Neutra, Rudolph Schindler, Kem Weber, Pierre Koenig, Craig Ellwood and Raphael Soriano play an important role in defining and developing California modernism. “The climate and the culture of California provided the ideal environment for modernism to take root and flourish, but in its own particular way,” writes Kaplan. “Like European modernism, it was functionalist, anti-ornament, and utopian in the conviction that design and technology could transform society. California practitioners, however, were committed to solutions appropriate to California. They adhered to a looser, warmer, more ad hoc modernism, one almost exclusively domestic in scale.” Open floor plan homes blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor, multifunctional objects, and inspirations from Mexico, Asia, craftsmanship and fashion—among many other topics—are all part of this fascinating volume, which highlights how California modernism became a model for the rest of the country. § 22

Your delicate crystal is safe in our hands.

A special program is the secret From now on, it is safer to wash your delicate crystal glasses in an ASKO than by hand. The Crystal Glass program ensures that the water temperature increases gently, gradually, and is then maintained evenly during the wash cycle. No wonder the fine art and crystal glass maker Orrefors recommends ASKO dishwashers.

motor lodge that dates back to the 1930s has been transformed into the Hotel Joaquin, a chic and exclusive destination thanks to the vision of Paul Makarechian, owner and CEO of Auric Road, and the interior design of Robert McKinley, founder of Studio Robert McKinley. “The resort’s location is especially nostalgic, as I grew up diving the coves along Pacific Coast Highway,” says Makarechian. “It really speaks to the heritage of Laguna Beach, while paying homage to the laid-back elegance of the California and Mediterranean coastlines.” SPRING | SUMMER 2019

With only 22 rooms—all free of television—the hotel provides a unique atmosphere where guests enjoy turntables and a selection of vinyl records rather than cable. The property also features pool and views of the ocean, which make up the perfect, personalized atmosphere to relax and unplug. In the lobby, guests can read books and savor a cocktail in a cozy ambiance. Chef Leo Bongarra offers a French-Mediterranean menu at Saline, the restaurant, which uses vegetables and herbs from the outdoor on-site garden. Designed by Studio Robert McKinley, the spaces reflect influences from St. Barts combined with a California bungalow vibe. “Materials are very clean and minimal, but organic and textured—hand-oiled white oak throughout, natural linen shades on lighting, and cane-lined closets,” McKinley says. “Bathrooms feature handmade Mexican clay tile and veined marble. Much of the 32

furniture and materials were sourced and built by local artisans.” In terms of color palette, the interior designer chose neutral tones to give the feeling of peacefulness. “We also couldn’t compete with the incredible natural setting in Laguna,” he confesses. “With that said, we mixed in some vintage pieces and work by California artists like Daniel Fuller and Sean Spellman to give the property some additional layers of interest.” Yoga classes and an all-access pass to the Adventure Garage— that houses surfboards, hiking and diving gear, and bicycles— complement the experience. Hotel Joaquin goes back to the essentials: reconnecting and spending quality time in a refuge where every detail matters and plays its part in the whole story. § https://hoteljoaquin.com

his side of the living posed its own unique challenges. The former owners installed floor to ceiling naturally stained shiplap running horizontal up the fireplace wall. It was an unnecessary and rather distracting contrast to the original vertical bead board that covered the rest of the main floor of the home. While shiplap may be a very trendy design element in beach and farmhouse-style homes right now, it definitely didn’t work with our design plan. Instead, we opted for smooth bright white walls, a picket-shaped tile for the mantel and layers of texture and unique pieces. Hands side table, Crate & Barrel fireplace screen, sofa from Shoppe Amber Interiors, original eagle sculpture by Curtis Jere and Victoria Morris black vase are just a few of the pieces that make this space so unique,” says Jen Samson, founder of Jen Samson Design. “The main challenge with this living room was in the overall room layout. The room is long and narrow and has two distinct areas within one space so we had to really work the space plan to come up with something felt cohesive. This family loves to have friends over and entertain, so we wanted to give them as much usable space as possible and that is how we came to the built-in sofa under the staircase. It basically turned what otherwise would have been an unusable area into something artful and cozy. We added a towering, mid-century-inspired light fixture to further help define it draw attention to the high ceilings, and then we sourced a wide variety of new and vintage art to complete the corner, along with a custom sheared hide rug and two bowl tables by Mater. Across from the custom built in sofa, a pair of cane chairs from Bali and a carved African drum stool add additional seating in a perfectly sun drenched spot of the room. Green was pretty much the only color we intentionally introduced throughout the room, and the cushions on those two chairs (Zak & Fox, Windowpane) were the perfect addition. The fabric inspired the colors seen in the art collection and in other areas around the room,” says Samson. § www.jensamsondesign.com SPRING | SUMMER 2019

esigned by Brandon Architects and built by Patterson Custom Homes, this 5,406-square-foot Corona del Mar house comprises four bedrooms and five bathrooms. It serves as the primary residence for a couple and their two daughters, who enjoy a relaxed lifestyle where the sun and sea are part of their daily routine. “The house was designed to catch a lot of natural light,” says Christopher Brandon, founder of Brandon Architects. “One of our biggest challenges was to maximize the views of the ocean and jetty with a transitional style home, while preserving the overall intent of the house in relation to its surroundings.” The main living spaces, guest suite, mudroom and three-car garage occupy the ground floor. The second level hosts two secondary bedrooms, the laundry room, a den, an office and the master suite, where two recessed raised pocketing doors maximize the views. The top floor takes full advantage of the stunning environment via an expansive deck with a cabana (and storage). “We strove to create a unique yet timeless quality with the architecture while ensuring that the client’s needs were met,” says Brandon. oak flooring and soft fabrics created a warm, organic feel throughout the home. Focusing on a neutral palette and timeless look, as desired by the owners, interior designer Trish Steel from Churchill Design created a serene atmosphere and introduced decor and furnishings by Codarus, Pindler, Kravet, Fabricus and Feizy, among others. Several elements and spaces were custom made—

such as the fixtures that illuminate the staircase and the bathrooms—with personal touches added to create and highlight various design aspects. “This project has a feeling of ‘beachy’ meets traditional influence while creating an overall friendly and open environment,” Brandon concludes. § www.brandonarchitects.com www.churchill-design.com

n Corona del Mar, on the coastal side of Pacific Coast Highway—a few steps from the beach, and a vibrant shopping and dining area—this house took two years to complete, from original conceptual and planning work with the architect, to the selection of the custom home builder, to the final furniture and design plan with the interior designer. Originally it was a 1,500-square-foot beach

bungalow. Today, as a result of a collaboration between Brandon Architects, Devco Homes and K. Smith Interiors, it is a 4,000-square-foot home, owned by a couple (one-half of whom is a developer of commercial projects) who put easy entertaining and indoor/outdoor living at the center of their needs. “All of the finishes were selected with that lifestyle

in mind,” says K. Smith Interiors founder Kristi Smith, who strove to make her client’s life easier through the whole project. “The porcelain plank flooring downstairs was chosen so we could run it right out into the center courtyard. The leather finished stone counters in both the kitchen and the master bath are in quartzite for easy care and beauty. The cabinets are riff cut oak with slab-style doors in SPRING | SUMMER 2019

a deep espresso for a simple and neat look.” The five-bedroom home—which includes a wine cellar; a 16-foot, U-shaped island; a custom spa-like master bath with steam shower and free standing tub among its impressive spaces—was designed in accordance with an open plan. On the ground floor, the great room flows into the center courtyard through custom lanai doors creating a seamless 56

connection between inside and out. “The client had indicated from the beginning that he was going to want very specific art with bold colors,” says Smith. With that in mind, the interior designer focused on a neutral palette—such as taupe and smoke tones—both for the surfaces and the furniture pieces. “We wanted the finishes to compliment, not to compete. Then, we added

texture to create depth.” To create the right lighting story, Smith called upon an expert to assist her with the right type of LED fixtures. With its clean lines and sleek aesthetic, this home reflects a balance between comfort and style, and between soft hues and pops of colors. § ksmithinteriors.com

n the city of Orange, the Fairhaven Tract is home to 140 stunning single-level homes. Following seven different models, all of them were built in the 1960s by developer Joseph Eichler, who contracted modernist architects that made them into iconic properties, favoring indoor/outdoor living thanks to the use of open floor plans. Located on an 8,900-square-foot lot, one of them, which dates back to 1961, was purchased by a couple in 2010. The model LJ-124 by architects Jones and Emmons exemplifies midcentury style, something the owners did their best to stay true to through the renovation of different elements, including the installation of vertical wood siding—according to the original Eichler aesthetic—to replace the horizontal siding from the previous owner. A complete overhaul of the kitchen and the two bathrooms in this 1,978-square-foot home, which comprises four bedrooms, a family room, a dining area and a living room, was also made.

The front entry door opens to a central atrium patio space, which is the owner’s favorite area. “I love sitting there on a cool night with the fire pit on and having a great conversation with my husband,” she says. Inside, natural light floods the main living areas, where original architectural features, such as the open beam ceilings, immediately catch the eye. Sight lines from the atrium through the interior and to the backyard create a seamless connection and natural flow between inside and out. Several upgrades were made, including the energy efficient Fleetwood windows and sliders, the large island in quartz and the custom walnut veneer paneling, giving this house a new life. Made of creamy avocado, olive and bright orange, the color palette—both in the interior and exterior—highlights the property’s unique character. Furniture by midcentury masters including George Nelson (1908-1986), Isamu Noguchi (1904-1988) and Charles and Ray Eames (1907-1978 and 1912-1988, respectively) perfectly match with the refined, modernist atmosphere. David Godshall from Terremoto Landscape helped to design a drought tolerant landscaping, adapting the property to its environment. Honoring the past while aligning with contemporary life, this home is an architectural, timeless gem that tells a fascinating story. § http://socalmodern.com SPRING | SUMMER 2019

ona Graf, who founded Grace Blu Interior Design in 2007, is not afraid of color or texture. On the contrary, her spaces use both to create a unique, fresh look. As one of the interior designers behind the recently opened hotel Lido House Newport Beach, Graf expressed her style with the Balboa Cottage, combining traditional architecture and modern elements. In this Dana Point project, Graf reflected her aesthetic but put her client’s bold personality at the 68

forefront. The owners of the home—a professional couple in their mid-30s who own a hip T-shirt manufacturing company—“enjoy dramatic use of colors and lively spaces, as well as cool bespoke pieces,” says Graf. “The home had great bones with basic traditional details to work with. We had to integrate our client’s funky and sophisticated style.” In the main formal living room, furnished with a white Chesterfield sofa and a round brass cocktail table, turquoise—the dwellers’ favorite color—was

used in different accessories such as the cushions and curtains, evoking the ocean. “We blended traditional pieces with splashes of gold and brass accents throughout,” Graf adds. The dining room, which features beautiful architectural details including the coffered ceiling and wainscoting, is the focal point of the home. “We had to come up with a creative way to center the beautiful statement Niche Modern light fixture,” says Graf. “We also added the metal Made Goods dining chairs with their crumpled paper allure to bring some texture to the room, and we introduced a touch of flair and visual interest with one gold chair off to the side.” The breakfast area—Graf ’s favorite room—offers 70

a view of the ocean surrounded by an environment where hints of yellow contrast with the black-andwhite scheme. “In the family room, we wanted to complement the casual Environment sofa, so we created a custom dark blue velvet sofa, which we feel blends very nicely in this room,” explains Graf. Once again, pops of bold hues were included, with the pillows in a chevron Missoni fabric. The glass coffee table adds some transparency and showcases the owners’ cocktail table books. Bold and modern, pop and traditional, this home mixes different styles yet creates a cohesive look and feel, in tune with the owners’ daring character. § www.graceblu.com

MAKE A SPLASH 1. “The pool was an anchor point for the overall design and the entertainment spaces throughout this Corona Del Mar house,” says Brandon Architects team. “The intent was to blur the line between indoor and outdoor living spaces. The great room and outdoor lounge become one continuous space once the doors have been opened. Integrating the pool within the main view helps to make it more of a sculptural element, becoming part of the design.” www.brandonarchitects.com

2. “When you walk through the center of this Crystal Cove house, you see the pool showing off a fountain and four fire bowls and deck jetting water spouts”, says Richard Cohen, founder of Richard Cohen Landscape & Construction. “The upper part of the backyard is formal, yet simple. When you step further into the yard, you discover the pool and spa area where there is a Bali feeling outdoor environment. The rest of the pool resembles a lake attached to the formal fountain. Surrounding the pool and spa, the landscaping has a lush, tropical motif.” www.richardcohenlandscape.com

ALFRESCO LIFESTYLE Landscape designer Molly Wood—founder of Molly Wood Garden Design—shares her tips on outdoor living and gardens. HOW TO CREATE THE PERFECT OUTDOOR DINING AREA? 1. Incorporate lots of comfortable seating. 2. Shelter is important. A roof, an umbrella or even a string of party lights can create a feeling of enclosure. 3. Set up a serving table nearby so peeps can help themselves to seconds! 4. A subtle fountain nearby can create a relaxing, abundant vibe. 76

SPRING | SUMMER 2019

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PLANTS FOR A GARDEN IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA? 1. Selecting plants with contrasting foliage texture and color is vital. 2. Choose 3-5 plants you love and know will work in your area, and stick to a simple palette. Less is more, repetition is best. 3. Plants with low water needs are always good in California. 4. Think about maintenance requirements and how much “gardening” you want to do. If you love annual color, think about limiting your efforts to a couple of planters by the front door or in a focal point pot as opposed to throughout the garden. 5. Pick the right plant for your conditions. You may love lavender, but you might not have sun and drainage for it.

FINAL TOUCH

A WALL OF SOUND

B

eoSound Shape—by Bang & Olufsen—is a wall-mounted wireless speaker system for design conscious music lovers, delivering immersive sound staging, a customizable design and integrated noise dampers for improved room acoustics. You can rearrange the tiles to form a new pattern, change the colors when you redecorate or add more tiles to boost sound performance. “The hexagon is one of nature’s favoured forms, seen in anything from snowflakes to honeycombs and makes perfect sense in repetitive and expanding structures. Every outcome is unique and there is a sense of natural beauty in these infinite variations,” says designer Øivind Alexander Slaatto.
