T

he master bath is getting a makeover, as this space is becoming a crown jewel of the home. In this recent project on Newport Harbor, Frank Pitman, principal of Frank Pitman Designs, Inc. in Mission Viejo included many decadent details and automated features throughout. The design inspiration was an art deco, luxury stateroom or yacht, which carries through the exotic wood grain cabinetry, glamorous chandeliers and intricate marble work. “Because it’s a high-rise condo overlooking the harbor with a floor-to-ceiling view all the way around, the challenge was to create privacy while keeping it open,” explains Pitman. By inserting a window in the master shower with a two-way mirror, the homeowner can take in the ocean view in privacy. Panels of art glass doors slide closed along a barn door-style track to conceal the water closet. All of the custom cabinetry is automated and interior lit with features like warming towel drawers, a slide-out surface for linens and a vanity mirror with hidden makeup lighting. “Whenever you tap anything, it opens or closes, and comes alive,” says Pitman. “Everything is right there and at your fingertips.”
