Josh’s journey began with his involvement in the Dream Ride Experience in Australia, an event that celebrates the achievements and dreams of people with intellectual disability His enthusiasm, spirit, and dedication made him stand out, and as a result, he was selected to join a group of participants from around the world for the Dream Ride Experience in the US.
The Dream Ride Experience is more than just an event; it is a movement that unites people of all abilities through the love of cars, motorcycles, and community. Orana's Ridleyton front garden has recently undergone a transformation that reflects the heart of the organisation: community, collaboration, and inclusivity.
Community spirit shines brightest when people come together to achieve a common goal. The recent redevelopment of Orana’s Ridleyton front garden is a testament to this spirit. Staff from the local Tenison Woods Catholic School, alongside Orana’s clients and staff, volunteered their time and energy to transform the garden into a vibrant space of beauty and tranquillity.
This initiative is more than just a landscaping project; it is a story of community, collaboration, and the enduring impact of shared values. A highlight of the redevelopment is the addition of a stunning Tree of Life mural painted on the side wall, symbolising growth, connection, and the nurturing spirit that the garden and the community embody.
Orana has long been a cornerstone of the Ridleyton community. The front space of Orana’s Ridleyton facility holds special significance; it serves as the first point of contact for visitors, clients, and staff, embodying the welcoming and inclusive spirit of the organisation.
Over the years, however, the front space had fallen into a state of disrepair. Weeds had taken over, and the oncevibrant space had lost its lustre. Recognising the need for a facelift, Orana sought to restore the garden to its former glory. This was not merely about aesthetics; the garden was intended to be a space where clients could engage with nature and find peace in their daily lives.
Central to the success of the garden’s redevelopment was the involvement of volunteers from Tenison Woods Catholic School. Staff from the school dedicated their time and energy to work alongside Orana’s clients and staff. This collaboration was more than just a redevelopment project; it was an opportunity for genuine connection, shared learning, and mutual support.
To fully appreciate the significance of Tenison Woods Catholic School’s involvement in this project, it is necessary to understand the history and mission of the school. Named after Father Julian Tenison Woods, the school embodies the principles of inclusion, compassion, service, and community engagement, values that Father Woods championed throughout his life.
The school’s mission is to offer quality education while fostering a sense of responsibility towards others in the community. Volunteering and community service are key to the school’s values, with staff encouraged to engage in local community support, and partnerships with organisations like Orana.
For Orana’s clients, participating in the garden’s makeover offered not only a chance to develop skills in gardening and teamwork but also fostered a sense of ownership and pride in their work. It was a meaningful way to engage in an activity that would have a lasting impact on their environment.
Together, they planted new greenery, arranged garden beds, adorned pots with mosaics, and ensured that the space was both beautiful and accessible to all. The therapeutic benefits of gardening and spending time in green spaces are welldocumented, particularly for individuals with disability. Gardens offer a tranquil environment where people can connect with nature and enjoy sensory stimulation through the sights, sounds, and smells of a green space.
For the staff and the school community, the project was a way to give back and strengthen ties with Orana. It also provided an opportunity to understand more deeply the experiences of individuals with disability and the importance of inclusivity and support.
The completed garden is now a testament to what can be achieved when communities come together. It stands as a vibrant, living symbol of collaboration, where every plant is a reminder of the effort and care put into creating a space that reflects Orana’s values.
A particularly meaningful addition to the garden is the Tree of Life mural, painted on the side wall of the Orana facility. This mural, designed by Madilen, one of the staff from Tenison Woods, is more than just an artistic enhancement; it is a powerful symbol representing the interconnectedness of all life, the strength of community, and the continuous growth and support that Orana offers its clients.
Incorporating elements that are personally meaningful to Orana’s clients, the mural features handprints of the Orana clients and staff, along with the handprints of the Tenison Woods Catholic school staff. This personalisation ensures that the Tree of Life is not just a static piece of art, but a representation of the clients’ own stories and their place within the Orana community.
Adding a delicious touch to the day, the Life Education group made freshly baked scones for everyone to enjoy during morning tea. It was a perfect way to celebrate the community’s hard work together.
As the garden continues to grow and flourish, it will serve as a place of beauty and reflection, enjoyed by clients, staff, and visitors alike. It is a place that embodies the spirit of Orana— where everyone is welcome, and where everyone can contribute to creating a better, more inclusive community.
The redevelopment of Orana’s Ridleyton front garden is more
than just a makeover; it is a celebration of community, collaboration, and the positive impact of working together. With the support of Tenison Woods Catholic School and the dedication of Orana’s clients, the garden has been transformed into a space that truly represents the values of Orana and the power of community involvement.
Orana’s recent ‘Music Legends’ Trivia Night was a night of fun, competition, and community spirit, all in support of a great cause. Held at Goodwood Community Centre, the event brought together people from all walks of life to test their trivia knowledge, bid on exciting auction items, and raise funds for Orana’s Evening Under the Stars ball.
While the event was themed around ‘Music Legends,’ the trivia questions covered a broad range of topics, offering something for everyone. From classic music hits to general knowledge categories, participants were challenged to recall facts across a variety of subjects. The diverse questions kept everyone on their toes, with teams eagerly competing for the top spot.
The trivia night’s format encouraged lively debates and friendly banter as teams discussed answers and celebrated their successes (or laughed off their misses). The range of questions ensured that everyone could contribute, making it a fun and engaging evening for all.
Adding to the excitement of the night were the raffles and silent auctions, which featured an array of enticing items for attendees to bid on. The auction and raffle items, generously donated by local businesses and supporters, included everything from luxury hampers to exclusive experiences.
The silent auction drew a lot of interest, with attendees eagerly placing their bids and hoping to take home a special prize. The raffles, meanwhile, added an element of suspense, with winners excitedly collecting their rewards at the end of the night.
Unlike many Orana events that are centred around clients, families, and staff, the ‘Music Legends’ Trivia Night was open to the public, attracting a diverse crowd of participants. This broader engagement not only made the event more vibrant but also helped raise awareness of Orana’s mission within the wider community.
The event provided an excellent opportunity for people unfamiliar with Orana to learn about the organisation’s work and the impact it has on the lives of people with disability.
The funds raised during the trivia night will go towards supporting people with disability to attend the end-of-year Orana Evening Under the Stars Ball, a cherished event that celebrates the achievements of people with disability. The Evening Under the Stars is a highlight of the Orana calendar, offering a night of celebration, recognition, and enjoyment.
By participating in the trivia night, attendees contributed directly to making this special event accessible to more people, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to join in the festivities.
The 'Music Legends' Trivia Night was more than just an evening of entertainment; it was a demonstration of community spirit and generosity. The lively atmosphere, combined with the shared goal of supporting a meaningful cause, made the event a resounding success. As the night drew to a close,
it was clear that everyone left with more than just a good time—they left knowing they had made a difference. The funds raised will go on to create lasting memories for those attending the Orana Evening Under the Stars, making the trivia night an event that resonates well beyond just one evening.
Orana’s commitment to creating inclusive and engaging events continues to shine through in gatherings like these, where fun meets purpose, and the community comes together to support a shared mission.
Orana’s Dance Down concert was a night filled with energy, excitement, and pure joy, as participants showcased their incredible talents on stage.
Held at the Thebarton Community Centre, the Dance Down concert brought together clients, staff, families, and the broader community for an evening of music, dance, and celebration. This annual event is a highlight in the Orana calendar, offering participants the opportunity to shine and express themselves through the universal language of dance.
The concert, a culmination of months of hard work, celebrates the talents of dancers from Orana’s “Dance Down” program, specifically designed for people with disability, offering an inclusive and supportive environment for creativity and self-expression. It is a joyous occasion that showcases not only the technical skills of the dancers but also the powerful impact of community and support, both in their personal growth and the program’s artistic achievements.
Orana’s Dance Down program offers weekly dance classes for both junior and adult participants. These classes span various dance styles, including jazz, hip hop, contemporary, and rock ‘n’ roll, allowing participants to explore multiple genres while gaining performance experience in an inclusive and encouraging setting. The emphasis on participation and skill development helps build self-confidence, improve coordination, and develop a healthy body image.
The Dance Down concert featured a diverse lineup of performances, each one unique and reflective of the participants’ hard work, creativity, and passion. From solo acts to group performances, the stage was alive with colourful costumes, dynamic choreography, and infectious enthusiasm.
For many participants, the concert was the culmination of weeks of preparation, with rehearsals and practice sessions building up to the big night. The dedication and effort put in by everyone involved were evident in the polished performances and the confidence with which they took to the stage.
The audience, filled with supportive family members, friends, and Orana staff, cheered on every performance, creating an atmosphere of encouragement and positivity. The smiles on the faces of the performers were matched by the smiles in the audience, as everyone celebrated the achievements of the night. The success of the Dance Down concert was made possible by the collaborative efforts of many. Orana staff played a key role in organising the event, from coordinating rehearsals to ensuring everything ran smoothly on the night. The dedication of the staff, coupled with the enthusiasm of the participants, created an event that was both professional and heartfelt.
Volunteers also contributed to the evening, assisting with everything from costume design to stage management.
Their support was invaluable in making the concert a night to remember.
A key figure in the success of Dance Down is Claudia, the program’s passionate and skilled dance teachers. Claudia has been a pivotal force behind the scenes, offering her expertise and support to all the dancers in the program.
However, we were sad to bid Claudia farewell at the end of August to pursue her Master’s in Music Management in London. Her influence extended beyond choreography, as she encouraged her students to embrace their individuality and reach their fullest potential, both on and off the stage.
Her dedication was evident in the way she tailored her teaching to meet the diverse needs of her students, ensuring that everyone felt both challenged and supported.
We wish her all the best in her studies and future endeavours.
We are excited to welcome Kylee Arnold as the new Dance Down program teacher. Kylee comes with a wealth of experience in teaching ballet, jazz and modern dance and will be a wonderful addition to the team.
As the final curtain fell and the applause echoed through the venue, it was clear that the Orana Dance Down concert was more than just an event; it was a celebration of what is possible when people come together to support and uplift one another.
The memories created during the concert will stay with the participants, their families, and everyone who attended, serving as a reminder of the power of community and the joy that comes from shared experiences.
The Orana Dance Down concert is set to continue as a cherished tradition, bringing joy, creativity, and connection to all who are involved. It is an event that truly embodies the spirit of Orana, where every individual’s unique talents are celebrated, and where everyone is encouraged to dance to their own rhythm.
David, known for his love of travel, recently set sail on a journey that took him to the stunning Pacific Islands. This cruise was not just a vacation; it was an opportunity for David to explore new places, meet new people, embrace new experiences and enjoy the freedom of being at sea. The cruise began with great excitement as David boarded the ship, ready to leave behind the familiar shores of Australia and venture into the unknown. As the ship set sail, David was captivated by the endless expanse of the ocean, the
gentle sway of the waves, and the promise of adventure that lay ahead. The ship’s vibrant onboard amenities and activities offered endless entertainment, and David eagerly embraced it all, from indulging in ocean swims to browsing through treasures in the cruise ship’s gift shop. Every moment at sea felt like an exciting new discovery!
The highlight of the cruise was, of course, the visit to Vanuatu. Known for its stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich cultural heritage, Vanuatu offered David a glimpse into
a world that was both beautiful and unique.
During his time on the islands, David had the opportunity to explore local markets, interact with the friendly residents, and learn about the traditional customs and practices that make Vanuatu so special. Whether it was relaxing on the beach, taking in the breathtaking landscapes, or enjoying the local cuisine, David embraced every experience with enthusiasm and joy.
Back on the ship, David also enjoyed the social aspect of cruising, adding to the overall experience, making the cruise even more special.
For David, this cruise to the Pacific Islands was more than just a trip; it was a journey of discovery, personal growth, and unforgettable memories. The experience of traveling to a new destination, engaging with different cultures, and enjoying the simple pleasures of life at sea was truly enriching.
As David returned home, he brought with him not just souvenirs and photos, but also a sense of accomplishment and a treasure trove of stories to share with his friends and family at Orana.
His adventure serves as a reminder of the importance of living life to the fullest and embracing the opportunities that come our way
. David’s cruise has sparked a desire for more travel and exploration. His experience is a testament to the fact that adventure knows no bounds and that with the right support, individuals can achieve their dreams and experience the wonders of the world.
David’s journey is an inspiration to all at Orana, showing that with a sense of adventure and an open heart, the possibilities for discovery are endless.
The Disability Royal Commission has been a significant milestone in Australia’s pursuit of justice and equality for people with disability. Established in 2019, the Commission was tasked with investigating and reporting on the systemic failures that have contributed to the marginalisation and mistreatment of people with disability. The final report, delivered in late 2023, contained 222 recommendations aimed at reforming the systems that impact the lives of Australians with disability. Among these, the Federal government has committed to adopting 13 key recommendations that promise to reshape the landscape of disability rights in the country.
The government has outlined a phased approach to adopting the recommendations, with some initiatives set to begin immediately, while others will be rolled out over several years.
They identified four key areas for the first stage of reform:
•Safety – actions to improve the quality of disability services, strengthen safeguards in the community, and better prevent violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
•Rights and anti-discrimination – advancing the rights of people with disability through ongoing law and policy reform.
•Inclusion and access – initiatives to better support inclusion and access, recognising the diverse and intersectional experiences of people with disability.
•Employment – reform across the disability employment ecosystem to boost workforce participation, stamp out discrimination in the workplace, and foster a dynamic and inclusive labour market.
Key government actions include:
•Updating Australia’s Disability Strategy by 2024, with an evaluation planned for 2025.
•Monitoring psychotropic medication use through joint reports and a newly released clinical standard.
•Designing a new Disability Employment Services model by 2025, expanding eligibility and support.
•Establishing a Disability Employment Centre of Excellence to improve training and practices.
•Formalising referral processes between the Fair Work Ombudsman and other authorities to address disabilityrelated discrimination.
Other measures focus on improving information on wages, enhancing open employment, addressing homelessness, supporting incarcerated NDIS participants, and expanding community programs for First Nations people with disability. The government is committed to ensuring better complaint handling processes and more data transparency regarding unregistered providers.
The Federal government’s response to the Disability Royal Commission’s recommendations represents a significant opportunity to address the systemic issues that have long affected people with disability in Australia. The commitment to adopting 13 key recommendations is a promising start, but it will be crucial to maintain a focus on the rights of people with disability, ensuring that they are at the centre of all efforts to create a more just and inclusive society.

In today’s world, where technology often dominates our lives, the chance to reconnect with nature and foster a deeper understanding of the environment is a valuable experience. Orana’s Life Education (Life Ed) group recently embraced such an opportunity by participating in a Nature Play SA event at Morialta Conservation Park, one of South Australia's natural gems.
This unique day combined outdoor exploration, environmental education, and creative expression, giving the group a memorable experience full of learning and fun.
Morialta Conservation Park is a beloved destination for nature enthusiasts, families, and schools alike, offering a rich tapestry of landscapes, flora, and fauna.
For Orana’s Life Ed group, this park became the perfect backdrop for a day filled with adventure and learning.
The journey began with the group’s arrival at the park, where they were greeted by guides from Nature Play SA. Nature Play SA is a nonprofit organisation dedicated to reconnecting people and communities with nature. through a range of activities that emphasise play, learning, and environmental stewardship.
Their programs often involve immersive experiences that aim to nurture an appreciation for the environment while promoting physical activity and creativity.
The walk offered much more than just beautiful views. At various points along the trail, the group stopped to learn about the plant life thriving in the park. They were introduced to native trees, shrubs, and grasses, some of which have been part of the landscape for centuries. The group learned how certain plant species have adapted to the dry, Mediterranean climate of South Australia, and how they support the wider ecosystem.
After the guided walk, the group concluded their day with a watercolour painting session, an activity designed to merge creativity with the natural beauty surrounding them. With the waterfall as their muse and the sound of nature as their soundtrack, the participants gathered to express their impressions of the park through art.
The watercolour session provided a moment of reflection, where the group could sit quietly, absorb their surroundings, and channel their experiences onto paper. For many, this was the perfect way to wind down after the physical activity of the hike. Watercolour, with its soft, flowing hues, seemed an ideal medium to capture the tranquility of
Some participants chose to paint the waterfall itself, focusing on
One of the standout moments was learning about the local fauna. The guides explained how Morialta’s habitats provide refuge for numerous species, from small reptiles and insects to the colourful array of birds that call the park home.
Throughout the walk, the guides emphasised the importance of conservation and the role each person plays in preserving natural environments like Morialta. Participants learned how human activity impacts these ecosystems, from littering to the introduction of invasive species.
the movement of the water and the play of light on the cliffs. Others were inspired by the vibrant greenery, the textures of the rocks, or the birds they had seen earlier. The activity allowed for individual expression, and each painting became a unique reflection of how the day’s adventures had touched the participants personally. Beyond the artistic aspect, the painting session was also a way
to reinforce the day’s lessons about nature. By sitting in the environment they had just explored, the participants were able to deepen their connection to the landscape. Painting in the outdoors, surrounded by the sounds and smells of the natural world, offered a new perspective on the importance of nature as both a source of inspiration and a place worth protecting.
The participant’s experience at Morialta Conservation Park was a perfect example of the type of activities engaged in at Orana’s Life Education program. By engaging in exploration, and creative activities, the participants not only learn about their environment but also gained personal and developmental benefits. For the participants, spending the day in the fresh air, moving through the landscape, and engaging their senses undoubtedly boosted their mood and energy levels. The walk provided physical exercise, while the slower pace and time spent in nature contributed to mindfulness and relaxation.
The creative aspect of the day, particularly the watercolour session, fostered emotional expression and encouraged the participants to engage with their surroundings on a deeper level. Art has long been known to be a therapeutic activity and combining it with nature amplified its calming effects.
As the participants left Morialta, they carried with them not only their beautiful watercolour paintings but also a renewed appreciation for nature and the outdoors.
A big thank you to Nature Play SA for guiding us through this enriching experience and helping us connect with nature in such a meaningful way.
Down Syndrome South Australia (DSSA) Playgroup is a nurturing environment designed to support children with Down syndrome and their families.
It goes beyond offering a place for children to play; it provides a community of support, education, and connection for families navigating the unique challenges and joys of raising a
child with Down syndrome. The DSSA Playgroup plays a critical role in fostering inclusive play, developmental growth, and socialisation for children, while also creating a support network for parents and caregivers.
One of the primary roles of the DSSA’s Playgroup is to provide a safe and inclusive environment where children with Down syndrome can engage in play.
Play is an essential part of childhood development, allowing opportunities for children to explore, learn, and build social skills. For children with Down syndrome, play can sometimes be more complex due to physical, cognitive, or sensory challenges. Playgroup is tailored to accommodate these needs, ensuring that every child can participate fully and enjoyably.
This inclusive approach encourages children to engage in a variety of activities that foster learning and development in a supportive setting.
Children with Down syndrome often experience delays in reaching developmental milestones, such as walking, talking, and fine motor skills. DSSA’s Playgroup offers structured activities designed to encourage the development of these critical skills in a supportive, fun and therapeutic environment.
The Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) plays a crucial role in guiding these learning activities, especially when facilitated by a special education teacher. The EYLF emphasises the importance of play-based learning as the foundation for early childhood development, focusing on the core principles of belonging, being, and becoming.
These principles ensure that children are seen as capable learners with unique needs, allowing for tailored support that nurtures their growth and development.
Through fun and therapeutic guided play, children are encouraged to practise and enhance their skills in areas such as communication, problemsolving, and social interaction.
The Playgroup is facilitated by a special education teacher who brings their expertise in adapting the EYLF to meet the diverse needs of all children, including those with developmental delays or disability, ensuring every child is supported in a way that is flexible and responsive to their needs.
Through guided play, children are gently encouraged to practise and enhance their abilities, contributing positively to their overall development.
SOCiALiSATiON AND FRiENDSHiP
For any child, building friendships and learning how to interact with peers are essential aspects of social development. Children with Down syndrome may face social challenges, such as difficulties with communication or understanding social cues. Playgroup provides an environment where children can socialise with others who share similar experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance. These interactions help children develop vital social skills and form meaningful friendships.
Raising a child with Down syndrome can be a challenging and, at times, isolating experience for families. DSSA’s Playgroup serves as a critical support network for parents and caregivers. It provides a space where families can connect as a community with others who understand the unique experiences of raising a child with Down syndrome, share advice and receive encouragement from those who have walked a similar path. This connection is vital in helping families feel understood, supported, and less isolated.
The Playgroup also serves as an information hub for families. Parents can access a wealth of resources, including information on early intervention services, educational tools, and healthcare options. This access to resources empowers parents with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions about their child’s care and development.
DSSA’s Playgroup is more than just a place for children to play; it is a vital support system for families, a hub for early childhood development, and a beacon of inclusion in the community. Through its inclusive play environment, developmental activities, and strong sense of community, the Playgroup offers invaluable benefits to children with Down syndrome and their families.
“We love coming to DSSA Playgroup. We appreciate the opportunity to come together and meet other families in our community who also have a child that has Down syndrome. It’s a great chance to connect and build friendships as we navigate this journey together,” said Hannah, parent of Playgroup participant Isla.
