HE emergence of Uche Secondus as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has altered the calculations about how the vice presidential candidate would emerge. The earlier calculations had been that the South West would produce the Chairman, making the vice presidential slot a reserve of the South East. “None of those calculations had considered the South South,” a party official said after the convention that produced a national Chairman from the South South. “It is no longer certain where the vice presidential candidate of would be from,” he said. With the presidency zoned to the North, it was expected that the vice presidential slot in the South would have been South East’s. A top delegate who was privy to the negotiations said that the expectation informed the low interest that the South East showed in top party positions. Blames are flying about the failure of the South West to have clinched the national chairmanship. They are being pushed back to the South West. “The South West was in disarray at the national convention. It had had six candidates. None agreed to step down for the other,” said a delegate. “They were all over the country campaigning. They seemed to think more about themselves than the party.” At the convention, the South
