Brielle

The city on Lake Briel exudes memories of a distant past. The city has received kings and queens in its rich history and counted sea admirals, writers, poets and martyrs among its residents. The old fortressed city and most famous pilgrimage site of South Holland tells, through the more than 300 monuments, the story of the Libertatis Primitiae, “first fruits of freedom”. On April 1, 1572, the city was taken by the Watergeuzen and took its important place in every history

book regarding the Eighty Years’ War. The ramparts with its bastions and ravelins still offer protection against the outside world and a safe haven for the many churches and treasures of Brielle.

A day trip in Brielle Brielle is a beautiful fortress town with over 400 monuments and a rich history, so there’s always something to see. The area surrounding Brielle also has a lot to offer. Brielle is located by the Brielse Meer, which offers a lot of options for recreation on and by the water. But you should also consider cycling east along the water. Enjoy the view of all the water sports enthusiasts on the water, and stop at the Vrijheidsbos, where trees have been planted to commemorate special events. Read the poems with each tree and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

Nearby, in Vierpolders, you can take a walk on the ‘Blotenvoetenpad’ in the fruit tree orchard of the Klok family. Experience the feeling of nature beneath your feet, and then enjoy a cup of coffee with a treat. A little further on, you can visit the fishing village Zwartewaal, with its ‘Visserijmuseum’ in the harbour. In this museum, you will learn everything there is to know about the history of fishing in Zwartewaal. Ride your bicycle through the authentic polder landscape to Vierpolders and back to Brielle.

Fortified city of Brielle more than history!

The firstling of liberty... that is the fortified city of Brielle. Each year on 1 April, Brielle celebrates its liberation from the Spaniards in 1572, when the Sea Beggars chased away the Spaniards. Of course, this fortified city has a lot more to offer: historic buildings, shops, galleries, restaurants, hotels, pavement cafĂŠs, camping sites, museums and a harbour with a direct 10

connection to the nearby lake, the Brielse Meer. In the immediate vicinity you can go on wonderful walking or cycling tours. In short, there is always plenty to do.

Hellevoetsluis

The beautiful location of the vast Haringvliet has played an important role in the course of history for Hellevoetsluis. Not for nothing that it is the “Fortress City on the Haringvliet. The Fortress, with its ports and defenses, is home to a rich wealth of history. The water and Hellevoetsluis are traditionally connected. Thanks to its favourable and strategic location on the Haringvliet, Hellevoetsluis became a home base for the Dutch war fleet in the early 17th century. A port that later became more and more reinforced, creating the unique combination of a fortressed city and a war port. Admirals such as de Ruyter, Tromp and Piet Hein have had their home port here.

Westvoorne Oostvoorne, Rockanje and Tinte together form the greenest municipality of Voorne-Putten. Oostvoorne, with its Jacoba Burcht, is a perfect base for wonderful cycling and walking tours or a discovery tour by horse through the green forests. Tinte is in one beautiful polder landscape. Every year there is a big Summer party with children’s activities, street theater and music. The village even has two museums. Westvoorne, part of the Southwestern Delta, has been awarded as the best sustainable nature destination in the world due to its unspoilt, liveable nature, enormous biodiversity and sustainable tourism.

Then move on to De Stenen Baak, at the Brielse Meer. De Stenen Baak was the first lighthouse in the Netherlands that was made of stone; it was made to replace the previous lighthouses that were made of wood, which burned down. Inside, you can take a look at the informative presentation by ‘Historical museum Den Briel’, of which De Stenen Baak is a branch location, and if the weather is good you can climb up to the roof and enjoy the stunning view.

In Westvoorne you can enjoy gorgeous nature, the beautiful North Sea beach, and multiple excellent museums. Pay a visit to ‘De duinhuisjes’ and learn about life in dune farms between 1900-1930. Or visit the town Tinte and have a cup of coffee at the ‘Koffieleut’ museum, and admire their old coffee grinders, coffee pots and agricultural tools.

After a nice day trip, you can go back to Westvoorne for a nice meal at one of the excellent restaurants in Rockanje and Oostvoorne, and then take a beautiful walk through the dunes or on the beach, and enjoy the sunset at one of the beach pavilions.

If you don’t want to say goodbye to the beach yet, you can spend a night at Rockanje beach in the Badhotel, and in Oostvoorne at Hotel van Marion.

BEACHES

Voorne-Putten has 15 kilometres of special coastline. Experience the enormous space and taste the salty sea air. Enjoy stepping onto the sand of the only south facing beach in the Netherlands or above it hanging on the kite. Ride on the beach with your horse and stay and watch the amazing sunset. Voorne-Putten has something for everyone who loves the beach.

BEACHES

Rockanje Beach Rockanje beach, the country’s only south facing beach, is totally geared to bathing guests. Due to its unique position, the beach is a true paradise for sunbathers. Whether you just want to enjoy the sun or be active on the water, Badstrand Rockanje has everything you need. The beach slopes very gradually towards the sea and the sandbanks off the coast prevent waves from disrupting your swimming. The beach is therefore ideal for children who can safely play at the water’s edge. At the beach you can do kite surfing, paddle boarding, long boarding, beach yoga and various beach games. You can also have something to eat and drink at one of the beach pavilions. Rockanje beach is accessible via the first and the second entrance. To the north of the Badstrand, there is nudist beach. Every year, Badstrand Rockanje receives the highest award for its very clean beaches and has been awarded the Blue Flag.

Gillian and Dennis have a tip: ‘Aside from mountain biking, we both love to go running in natural areas, and we love the dunes and the beach. As soon as the water temperature of the sea is a little more pleasant again, Gillian goes swimming with a friend nearly every day during the summer. We swim from the beach of Rockanje all the way to the first buoy and back again, it’s perfectly refreshing.’

Anne and Gerda have a tip:

‘Spending time at the seaside, on the beach, makes you feel good and at peace, and the more time you spend there, the more you can feel your worries slipping away, so you can let things go. riders and kite surfers.

Maasvlakte Beach

The coastline of Voorne-Putten has grown since the expansion of the Maasvlakte. Maasvlakte 2 directly links up with the current Maasvlakte. The Slufterstrand has therefore largely disappeared. Due to the popularity of the Slufterstrand, it was decided to restore the lost beach during the construction of Maasvlakte 2. The coastal area past Maasvlakte 2 is not a beach with a boulevard and lots of cafes and restaurants. This would not reflect the function of the land reclamation as a port and industrial area. However, it is somewhere where people can enjoy sun, sea, beach, wind and tranquillity. The Maasvlakte beach is mainly known for its ideal conditions for surfers and kiters.

Blue flag The beaches on Voorne-Putten are clean and safe and are awarded annually with the international Blue Flag award.

Kiters have their own extended section of beach at their disposal. Infrastructure and sufficient parking ensure good accessibility by car and bicycle.

ON AND BY THE WATER

Oostvoornse meer

In a beautiful location, between the Brielse Meer and the North Sea, you will find the Oostvoornse Meer. A recreational area close to the harbour of Rotterdam. If you look out from the north side of the lake, you will be able to see the ‘Green Beach’, and from the other side you can see the cranes of the Maasvlakte. Because of this, it’s a somewhat surreal place where people, plants and animals will feel at home. There are a lot of options for recreation here, with amazing beaches, various options for paddleboarding, surfing and being under water. There are a lot of facilities for underwater diving. There are a lot of shipwrecks to see, and sometimes even new ones are discovered. A lot of props have been sunk especially for divers. A few famous examples are the underwater (Volkswagen) Beetle and tunnel of 46 metres. Around the lake you will find a few nice catering places, with very good terraces. There are various locations to get your gear so you can get on or in the water.

Kitesurfen

The popular and fantastic water sport of kite surfing just keeps on growing and growing. It has become the most popular activity on the North Sea beach. The sport, a combination of kiting and surfing, is easy to learn and has become increasingly safe in recent years. Depending on the wind, the water off the beaches at Rockanje, Oostvoorne or Maasvlakte is perfect for kite surfing. You can also take lessons. The certified teachers will make sure you master kite surfing quickly and safely. Not sure you fancy the high speeds and big leaps of kite surfing? You can still enjoy watching the spectacle of numerous kites ‘dancing’ on the wind. www.learnkiteboardingnow.com

28

In and around the Brielse Meer Will has a tip: ‘During my free time, I love to go kite-surfing on the beach of Oostvoorne, but I also like to go to the Slufterstrand beach on the Maasvlakte, which is perfect for hydrofoiling. But the Oostvoornse Meer is also perfect for kite-surfing, and next to the Brunotti Beachclub there is a large surfing store where I always buy my gear.’

Meerkoetisland Always wanted to visit a desert island? If so, head for the ‘t Meerkoetjes play island in Brielle lake and go looking for secret spots! You can get nice and dirty here, and if you fall off the barge, you can just swim to the side. The pump on the other bank even lets you pump your own water to set other parts of the water play device in motion. You’ll find the water playground at Staaldiepseweg in Brielle. Follow the sign to ‘zwemlocatie’. www.nederlandsezwembaden.nl

Waterfun At the De Krabbeplaat campsite, waterlovers will be in their element. On the campsite and around, you’ll find everything you need in a perfect setting that is both green and rich in water. With the beautiful fortified town of Brielle just around the corner, you have everything you need for a relaxing holiday at this pleasant family campsite. www.krabbeplaat.nl

34

1

Fun ferry crossings

The Heinenoordtunnel is by far the most commonly used route to reach the Hoeksche Waard. But there is a more fun way than over the asphalt of the A29. At Hekelingen, you can cross to Nieuw-Beijerland within a few minutes. At Oud-Beijerland, Puttershoek, Strijensas and Numansdorp, to name just a few places, the so-called Delta ferries provide crossing to the surrounding islands or the mainland. The wind in your hair, the splashing water, the calls of the birds ‌ It’s a dream come true! The ferry routes connect perfectly to beautiful cycling and hiking routes. Particularly the ferry from Tiengemeten will bring you to a beautiful part of the Hoeksche Waard!

2

Hundreds of kilometres of hiking and cycling routes

The best way to experience the Hoeksche Waard is on foot or on your bicycle. The network of hiking routes is no less than 470 kilometres in total, with 100 kilometres over unpaved roads and 40 kilometres over farm land. The various clearly indicated cycling routes will take you past beautiful nature reserves, historical dike villages and special picnic spaces with a beautiful view (and sometimes with artwork). But it’s not strictly necessary to bring your own food and beverages. If you prefer being served, there are plenty of cosy terraces along the way.

3

Cosy village centres with fun stores

There are 14 villages and 37 hamlets in the Hoeksche Waard, all unique pieces of the Netherlands. Surrounded by nature and water, you will find many cosy village centres of various sizes. There are fun shopping opportunities all over the island. Strijen, ’s-Gravendeel, Puttershoek, NieuwBeijerland and Numansdorp, for example, each offer their own mix of fun stores and hospitable cafés. As the biggest village of the Hoeksche Waard, Oud-Beijerland also has the largest shopping centre. Perfect for a nice afternoon of shopping.

4

the eyes. And still, there are a lot of farmers at work on the island. What’s more, since it is an important food source for the Randstad, there are continuous agricultural developments in the Hoeksche Waard flink. Sustainable, innovative agricultural is everywhere. Usually surrounded by beautiful blooming field margins. This is also typical for the Hoeksche Waards. And you can buy all these delicious products from the cold clay directly from the farmers, in one of the many farm stores. We can only recommend it!

5

Always something to do!

SUP-boarding on the Binnenmaas? Want to get your own vegetables or flowers directly from the field? Or would you rather visit an interesting exhibition in Museum Hoeksche Waard? There’s always plenty to do in de Hoeksche Waard. Such as fun events like the Party Week in ’s-Gravendeel, the Horse Market in Numansdorp, the Bram Roza Festival on the bunting in Nieuw-Beijerland and the Spuidagen in Oud-Beijerland. Or visit one of the special markets, like the Christmas market or a PUUR market with artisanal and seasonal products. The Hoeksche Waard is 313 km2 of unique experiences!

Agriculture 2.0

It appeals to the imagination. A rural landscape with historical mills and characteristic farmhouses. As one of the 20 National Landscapes of the Netherlands, the Hoeksche Waard is a feast for

ON AND BY THE WATER

Cast out a fishing rod Voorne-Putten is known as one of the areas with the highest fish concentration in the Netherlands and is a paradise for anglers. From wreck fishing, fly fishing to belly boat fishing, from fishing in the polder, on a lake, a ditch or canal, these are all options on Voorne-Putten.

38

Salt Voorne-Putten has a beautiful coastline where you can fish a plenty. When there is an onshore wind, the fish feed on sand eels and that can produce nice catches. And there are also beautiful fishing spots in the middle of the port area of Rotterdam Europoort. If you go fishing at the Oude Maas you can catch both salt and freshwater fish. The Haringvliet was already an attractive fishing area, but this has increased due to the opening of the Haringvliet locks. The Haringvliet will once again become the crucial gateway to the Rhine and Maas and migratory fish such as salmon and sturgeon can benefit from this.

Voorne-Putten is eldorado for fishing lovers. Fresh In the polders of Voorne-Putten, but also in the recreational areas Brielse Meer, Bernisse and Oostvoornse Meer, you can enjoy good fishing. You will find nice fishing spots with a wide variety of fish species. The Oostvoornse Meer, for example, is very suitable for fly fishermen. There are trout swimming there that have record dimensions due to the favourable living conditions. Lake Briel offers beautiful sheltered fishing spots along the shore, but the islands in the lake are also popular. The quality of the water of the Bernisse is very good and the quiet Bernisse therefore also has a nice stock of fish. If you are looking for a fishing challenge, then there’s the Spui, with its strong current. And the fishing spots around the fortifications of Brielle and Hellevoetsluis are of course also unique. In short, Voorne-Putten has plenty of fishing possibilities.

In order to fish on Voorne-Putten island, you need a fishing permit or pass. HISTORY

Musea historical heritage ’t Vliegend Hert Windmill Brielle’s post mill has an unusual history. During restoration work on the Brielle fortifications in 1973, two large lumps of stone were found. These turned out to be the old foundations of the post mill which stood here in the 17th century. This prompted the establishment of the ‘t Vliegend Hert foundation, which eventually rebuilt the windmill in 1985. A special feature of the windmill are its three lofts, the central milling loft, the top stone loft and the bottom loft, known as ‘hell’. The mill operates and is open to visitors every Friday (and Saturday, subject to confirmation) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The windmill offers wonderful views of the surrounding city walls and the city. Beside the windmill, in ‘De Molenschuur’, mill products are for sale. www.vliegendhert.org

Pilgrimage Church

The pilgrimage church Martelaren van Gorcum is a pilgrimage site in Brielle which is entirely devoted to the Martyrs of Gorcum. The story of the Martyrs of Gorcum goes back to the revolt against Spain. When the sea beggars’ fleet captured Gorcum in June 1572, a group of priests were taken prisoner. For nearly two weeks, they were tortured, baited and tempted to renounce their faith. Behind the church, at the site of the former peat barn, is the martyrs’ field where the martyrs lost their lives. The annual pilgrimage day in July still attracts people from all over the country. In the months of July and August, the church is open every afternoon from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m www.martelarenvangorcum.nl

HISTORY

St. Catharine’s Church When driving towards Brielle, the 60-metre tall tower of St. Catherine’s Church is visible from afar – so it’s quite something to consider that it was originally intended to be twice as tall! In 1575, stadholder William of Orange married his third wife Charlotte de Bourbon in St. Catherine’s Church, by way of thanks for the liberation of Brielle by the sea beggars on 1 April 1572. A stainedglass window in the church commemorates the event. From this tower, Mary Stuart waved off her husband, stadholder William III, on 11 November 1688. Stadholder William III left for England with a large military retinue intent on defeating the king of England, in which aim he was successful, and in the year 1689, he was crowned king of the Netherlands. If you would like to enjoy the view from the tower yourself, you can do so in the summer months. www.catharijnekerk.nl

Kruithuis, Courtine and Bastion V The fortress walls of Brielle boast various bastions, ravelins and bulwarks. The centuries-old Kruithuis (powder house), by Bastion No. 2, houses a permanent exhibition about the history of the April 1st celebrations in Brielle. The exhibition relates how the population of Brielle has commemorated the capture of the city by the sea beggars on 1 April 1572 over the years. Bastion No. 5 has an exhibition about Brielle during the ‘French period’. www.1aprilvereniging.nl, www.levedevestingbrielle.nl 46

R.T.M Ouddorp From the year 1898 to the 60s of the last Century, steam trams ran from the Rotterdam Tramway Company between Rotterdam and the South Holland islands. The museum shows the tram equipment that ran on these tram lines. A ride through the dunes of Ouddorp and over the Brouwersdam is also possible. The timetable can be found on the website of the museum. www.rtm-ouddorp.nl

Stenen Baak

(Oostvoorne-Brielle) The Stenen Baak was built in four months in 1630. The Stenen Baak was the first stone lighthouse of the Netherlands; it replaced wooden lighthouses that had burned down. In the 18th and 19th century the lighthouse got a military function in the defences of Brielle. Since 2004, the former lighthouse has been renovated and opened to the public. If the weather is good the roof is accessible, and you can enjoy a beautiful view. www.historischmuseumdenbriel/bezoek-brielle-en-omgeving/ stenen-baak

Hellevoetsluis Lighthouse The lighthouse, dating from 1882, is still used for shipping. The lighthouse provides a magnificent view over the Haringvliet and the harbour of Hellevoetsluis. This Hellevoet lighthouse is open to the public every last Sunday during the months of May through August from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

De Hoop Corn Mill In 1697 there was a wooden post mill on the place where the dry dock is now. This mill had to make way for the dry dock at the end of the 18th century. The stone tower mill “De Hoop” was built in 1801. The flour carts could drive under the sack hoist for loading and unloading. During the restoration in 1961-1962 this passageway was restored. In 1995 a visitor centre was opened in the second attic and the public is welcome in the months of July and August on Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. and on certain special days. www.molendehoophellevoetsluis.nl 47

HISTORY

Biberbunker Hidden in the dunes of Oostvoorne there is a remnant from World War ll. The people of the area call it the Biberbunker, a huge concrete clossus built with three metres thick walls. The bunker and Stelling, which can be found, tell a unique piece of history. The Funktstelle Vermittlung is also opend for visitors, and you can look at the Flak 37, an infamous anti-aircraft weapon. With these assets, the association shows even more of the unique history of what happened in the Oostvoorne

Lightschip 12 Noord Hinder The lightship 12 Noord Hinder was built in 1963 and served as a ‘landmark’ at various points in the North Sea until 1994. By then, the lightship had become surplus to requirements due to the modern navigation technology on board seagoing vessels. The Noord Hinder was the last lightship to serve at sea and was eventually replaced by a light buoy. A visit to this unique museum ship in Hellevoetsluis is very special and instructive. For children, it is also very adventurous. For example, they get to climb the light tower and visit the galley! www.noordhinder.nl 48

De Burcht van Voorne The burcht van Oostvoorne was founded between 1150 and 1250 by the nobels of Voorne. The fortress was built on a “motte”, a natural elevation in the landscape which was artificially raised. By building on top of a dune, people could defend themselves more easily from attackers and they also had an excellent view the Meuse delta and the surrounding land. At the start of the 15th century, the complex served as a country retreat for Jacoba van Beieren, so the surviving ruin is aptly called Jacoba Burcht. The ruin of the fortress can be visited free of charge. www.monumentenbezit.nl/jacobaburcht-oostvoorne

Eighty years’ War Historical Museum Den Briel The museum, which is located in the old city hall and the old city jail, is devoted to the Eighty Years’ War and particularly the date 1 April 1572. On that day, Brielle was captured by the ‘sea beggars’ for the Prince of Orange. Brielle was the “first to be liberated”. Objects, videoclips, stories, animations and games give the visitor a good picture of the events of that time. www.historischmuseumdenbriel.nl

Open air museum

De Duinhuisjes in Rockanje The open-air museum “De Duinhuisjes” contains four original dune farms dating from 1850 to 1910. The dwellings are decorated in the style that was customary around the years 1900-1930. They have the same basic shape, but differ in layout and design, depending on the occupation of the residents, the “Dûnmieren”. Furniture and utensils, mostly from donations, complete the interiors. There is also a pigsty, chicken coop, open wagon shed, wells and a laundry room. The whole has a beautiful garden with fruit trees, multicoloured flowers and a few beehives. In 2016, the “Dûnhus” was opened, which serves as a visitor centre, with a shop. Coffee, tea and lemonade are available. Every year we furnish one of the houses in a themed exhibition. When you enter the historic centre of Hellevoetsluis, you might not notice right away that you’re in a big open-air museum, but as soon as you start learning more about the history, you will notice it all around you. For nearly three centuries, Hellevoetsluis was one of the most important harbours of the Dutch navy. This year is the 400th anniversary of the harbour, a good reason for us to have a chat with Igor Kluin, chairman of Fortresse Holland.

52

Fortresse Holland ‘With Fortresse Holland we want to show that the beautiful history of the historic centre of Hellevoetsluis is an experience that appeals to many people. We highlight the history of Hellevoetsluis and make it attractive, so that you can experience Hellevoetsluis as “open-air museum” with your family. As Fortresse Holland, we have started a collaboration with ram bow ship De Buffel, the Dry Dock Jan Blanken and the City Museum, but we will also start working together with other parties in the centre. Because we also have very beautiful defence structures, a nice lighthouse, a water tower, art objects and a mill. Hellevoetsluis is attractive in many ways, and we at Fortresse Holland have joined forces with many others.’

Hand in hand with history ‘People who visit Hellevoetsluis basically have to follow the red thread through history. We have a lot of gems in the historic centre, such as the wall of naval heroes and the veteran monument, and we want to link these two highlights with a nice tale of history, to complete the experience. For example, take a look at the harbour. Try to imagine what happened there in the 17th century. In the year 1667 the voyage to Chatham left from here during the second war between England and

the Netherlands, under the command of Admiral Michiel de Ruyter. That’s huge! Or that Piet Hein, who worked for the West Indian Trading Company, was docked here with the Spanish treasure fleet. It’s fascinating to try to imagine this. Sometimes this imagination needs some visual aids, which we can provide with Fortresse Holland.’

Visitor centre ‘The visitor centre at the Dry Dock Jan Blanken will be renovated at the start of 2022, to create a perfect visitor centre, which will be part museum. The City Museum will also be involved in the exhibition. Here you will be able to see what Hellevoetsluis has to offer, and there will also be a ‘19th century’ exhibition with information about Jan Blanken and a model of the Rijkswerf, from the Rijksmuseum. This way, we will be able to clearly highlight the timeline of the history of Hellevoetsluis, and the visitor centre will be the starting point for your visit to the historic centre.

created as a service harbour and a navy harbour, in order to maintain, store and supply the ships. Later on, the defence structures were built to protect the service harbour. Then people came to live here. In other fortress towns in the Netherlands it was the other way around, here the defence structures were built to protect the people. The town’s dry dock is very special. It was one of the biggest in Europe for a long time, and the old techniques still work today.’

A day in the “open-air museum” But Fortresse Holland, open-air museum of Hellevoetsluis, is already more the worthwhile! Within the context of the 400th anniversary of the harbour, we will have an indoor and an outdoor exhibition, so that you will get, in combination with the exhibition of the City Museum, a complete insight into the history of the historic centre.’

‘We have the harbour, the defence structures and the bunkers, and you can end your day on the cosy town square, at one of the high quality cafés or restaurants. Jan Blanken Dry Dock The Jan Blanken Dry Dock is the oldest surviving dry dock in the Netherlands and unique of its kind in terms of structure. The dry dock was built between 1798 and 1822 and is still in use for the maintenance of small vessels. Often these are historic ships. A visit to the dock is a unique experience for young and old, and takes you back in time to the era of the great naval heroes. The dry dock consists of two separate docks – Kieldok for minor maintenance and Timmerdok for major repairs and shipbuilding. A special feature is the ‘ship door’ that seals off the dock. The visitor centre has interactive displays which allow you to explore its history for yourself and to see, hear and read all about the dry dock and its architect. The tours are highly recommended – part of them involve walking through the historic tunnels, which could be flooded in order to quickly put out any fires in the dock. www.droogdok.nl

City Museum Hellevoetsluis The City Museum Hellevoetsluis is fully of historical information about Hellevoetsluis. The fixed exhibition shows the life, houses and work of the residents of the past and the present. The museum shows objects from agriculture, education and the glorious naval history. www.stadsmuseumhellevoetsluis.nl.

De Buffel Museum Ship Step aboard and go more than 145 years back in time. De Buffel was in service with the Royal Netherlands Navy in the period from 1896 to 1973 and is now on display at Koningskade in Hellevoetsluis. On board this museum ship, history is brought to life. There are puppet shows plus interactive games for the youngsters. You can see engines in operation, see what the ship look like when it was in service and experience its history through the film shown there. The tweendeck is the children’s domain. It has various different skill games to entertain and amaze the kids. www.debuffel.nl

Out and about with the wind blowing through your hair, on bike or in your hiking boots. A new adventure beckons around every corner.

OUT AND ABOUT

By foot

With the extensive walking junction network at VoornePutten you can plan your route and determine the distances yourself. The routes are not only about paved paths, but also half and unpaved paths and that makes it so much fun! Stroll through the woods, on sandy roads, dikes or explore the tall grass. While walking, you can enjoy the characteristic polder landscapes, sheep on the dike and the view over the lakes and beaches. Wear sturdy shoes, binoculars and a backpack and go by foot. We have made a selection from the large selection of hiking trails. Download the route at www.opvoorneputten.nl/watte-doen/wandelen and set off on an adventure! 60

Walk through history Brielle has a rich history and breathes memories of a distant past. You will find examples of this rich past at many places in the city centre. Beautiful facing bricks, plaques, and most especially the many listed buildings, have their own story. The Brielle guide group can tell you all about this but of course you can also go on your own. There are several city walks available at the Historisch Museum Den Briel. Opposite the museum is

Tip from Dennis: ‘Aside from running, I also love to go Mountainbiking around the Oostvoornse Meer, and I think the Brielse Meer is the real hidden gem of Voorne-Putten. You can go running, cycling and hiking around the Brielse Meer. It’s also ideal to rent a boat and spend the day on the water if the weather is nice.’

the statue of former queen Wilhelmina, the guide group departure point in high season. www.gidsengroepbrielle.nl

Naval heroes route In historic Hellevoetsluis you can follow in the footsteps of our naval hero Admiral Michiel de Ruyter by setting off with this naval hero. The historic city guide will take you on a voyage of discovery around the fortified harbour of Hellevoetsluis in search of the maritime past. Starting in 1602, the beginning of the Dutch East India Company period, the port of Hellevoetsluis was the most important Dutch naval port for hundreds of years. Piet Hein brought the Spanish treasure fleet he captured (Zilvervloot) to shore here and Admirals Michiel de Ruyter and Maarten Tromp set sail from this port, on their way to their battles on the high seas. www.bezoekhellevoetsluis.nl

By horse The wind through your hair, the salty air in your nose, on a cheerful, neighing horse, what else do you want? Horse riding enthusiasts can indulge themselves at Voorne-Putten. There are beautiful equestrian routes all over the island that lead through forests, polders, dunes and, of course, over the beach. The bridle paths have recently been refurbished in Westvoorne. This way you can make a route around the Oostvoorne lake of 11 kilometres. This beautiful route runs on paths, beach and horse tracks. The beaches are open to riders throughout the year. Only the bathing beach of Rockanje from 1 April to 1 October between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. is prohibited for horses. But you can also find beautiful equestrian routes along Lake Briel, the Bernisse recreation area and De Uitwaayer Spijkenisse nature and recreation areas. 61

OUT AND ABOUT

By bike If you take a bike ride on Voorne-Putten, you will be surprised by a varied landscape. You cycle through the polders where the cows follow you and the next bend suddenly brings you to a beautiful dune area where the silence of nature surrounds you. Nice bike paths along waterways, windmills, picturesque villages and the fortressed towns of Brielle or Hellevoetsluis, all within easy distance. You can also extend your biking route to the Maasvlakte or the Headland, where you can admire the huge sea container ships on the way to the port of Rotterdam! And does the other side beckon as well? Then take one of the ferries that cross the waterways around the island. You can discover it yourself with the themed cycle routes on Voorne-Putten. You can download the routes at www.opvoorneputten.nl/wat-te-doen/fietsen.

Mountain bikes For those who like to a bit of a workout, there are two special mountain bike routes on Voorne-Putten. One of these is a twelve kilometre route around Oostvoornse Lake, with a varied track through lovely dunes and woods with short climbs and specially extended single tracks. Mountain bikes can be rented from ’t Wapen van Marion, where there is a bicycle wash specially for the mountain bikers. In Uitwaayer recreation area at Spijkenisse, there is a thirteen kilometre route. This route is slightly flatter with specially built hills. In some places, you can really pick up speed, but the route also has a slightly more technical section. www.mtboostvoorne.nl www.mtbroutes.nl 62

A CONVERSATION WITH

Maarten den Bakker

Cycling fan Cycling is a popular sport on Voorne-Putten. We sat down to talk about this with someone who is a fan of cycling and of Voorne-Putten, ex professional cyclist Maarten den Bakker. Maarten was born and raised on Voorne-Putten. He was a professional cyclist from 1990 to 2009 and participated in the Tour de France nine times, became Dutch champion of professional cycling two times, and won the individual time trial in 2003. But of course he is ‘especially’ proud that he won the ‘Proftour van Oostvoorne’, because if you were born and raised here, you simply have to perform well here.

66

It’s a pleasure to talk to Maarten, who talks about cycling on Voorne-Putten with a lot of passion, and who still cycles ‘around the island’ with his training buddies four or five times a week. His training buddies are also from the area, and they usually start off together in Zuidland. Among his cycling buddies, there are big names and talents such as Chantal Blaak, Fabio Jakobsen and Kevin Inkelaar. These are cyclists who are currently active as professionals, and who also like to cycle around the island after and intense early morning training.

Together with Joop Zoetemelk during the cycling round of Abbenbroek

Around the island ‘Cycling on Voorne-Putten is beautiful, and it really never gets boring,’ says Maarten, who must have cycled around the island thousands of times by now. ‘It’s amazing to cycle here, the variation of the beautiful dune landscape, the polder landscape and even the harbour and the industrial area, it never gets boring. It’s always interesting, because of the different seasons and the fact that you have to wear the right clothing during the summer and the winter.’ As a farmer’s son from Abbenbroek, he loves to ride through the polder landscape, which offers a lot of variation, because aside from horticulture, there is also a lot of land cultivation and agricultural livestock farming here. ‘During the summer season, when it’s a little more crowded on the cycle paths, cyclists can enjoy a nice ride through the polder landscape. If you’d like a longer ride, it’s lovely to ride in the direction of Zeeland, via Goeree-Overflakkee and the Brouwersdam.’

Cycling tours Cycling is very popular on Voorne-Putten, so a lot of popular cycling tours are organised here as well. For instance, the Stichting Wielerronde Oostvoorne is hoping to organise the 40th Wiellerronde van Oostvoorne in 2021. Maarten was 16 years old when he saw Joop Zoetemelk win the Wiellerronde van Oostvoorne in 1985. This tour is a true staple of the region, something that residents and cyclists look forward to all year. Maarten sees the Wielerronde Oostvoorne, as one big reunion, not just for the cyclists and former cyclists, but also for the spectators. ‘Super fun to be a part of, a beautiful track, a good atmosphere and high quality organisation,’ says Maarten. He also had the honour of ascending the

‘You can ride all the way around the island without encountering a single traffic light.’ podium a few times, and he participated in the professionals’ tour. A lot of big names have participated in this, and a lot of professional cyclists such as Mike Theunissen, Dylan van Baarle and Bauke Mollema have won a title. And of course the biggest and most prominent among them is Joop Zoetemelk, who participated several times, won once, and also fired the starting shot one time.

Abbenbroek After the end of his cycling career, Maarten always stayed involved with the sport. Among other things, he organises Cycling Clinics for companies and 67

individuals, provides cycling gear and accessories, and he is involved in various cycling events. In Abbenbroek he is part of the organisation committee of the Wielerronde van Abbenbroek. This tour doesn’t have a professional race, but it has a very nice atmosphere. There are various categories, such as the elite tour and the popular couple time trial. The couple time trial is something you do together with your buddy, like a grandpa and his grandchild, two pub buddies or ‘around the island’ cycling

‘The energy you put into cycling comes back to you tenfold.’

buddy. Experience has shown that participants can get very fanatical when their time is recorded with a transponder. The barriered track of eight kilometres runs through the village and through the polder landscape, and you have to ride it three times. And afterwards, you can process your disappointment or victory together with the villagers in a café, with something to eat and drink. Everyone is allowed to join, you don’t need to have a license with the cycling association. Aside from Abbenbroek, Zuidland also has an annual cycling tour. Maarten is a ‘cycling fan’, and at the end of our conversation he said that he would love to organise the Voorne-Putten Tour. We are already looking forward to it!

Cycling around the island On the attached map, you can see clearly how you can cycle all around the island of VoornePutten. Want to avoid all traffic lights? Then choose the path that runs under the Spijkenisserbrug, right alongside the water. Maarten’s route also runs along part of the Maasvlakte, and if you have time to stop, you can watch the kite surfers on the Slufterstrand. Of course there are plenty of terraces along the way, where you can treat yourself. The route is 90 kilometres in total.

40 Proftour of Oostvoorne in 2021 th

‘No, it was never cancelled before,’ says chairman Bob Braber when we ask if the Proftour of Oostvoorne has ever been cancelled over the past 40 years. And then there was the coronavirus in 2020, the year that the 40th edition was supposed to take place. We sit down for a chat with the chairman and founder of this well-known and popular Tour, who hopes that ‘his’ tour can go ahead on 29 July, with everything as it’s supposed to be. As it has always been, with 15,000 spectators and a lot of famous national and international professional cyclists, who usually just completed the Tour de France. A nice atmosphere with music on the square, that every resident of Oostvoorne looks forward to. ‘It will also be the year I say goodbye as chairman of the board,’ says Bob Braber, who believes 40 years is long enough.

Joop Zoetemelk It all started in 1980 with Lex Nederlof from Oostvoorne, who started with the newbies and gave Bob

the idea to organise the Proftour in Oostvoorne. Just like the Proftour, Lex went on for many years, and was called the grandpa of the cycling team. It’s been 40 years since it started, and by now the Proftour in Oostvoorne has become a true staple. The most well-known and prominent professional cyclist who participated in the tour in Oostvoorne is still Joop Zoetemelk, and how great is it that it was Joop who won the very first Proftour in Oostvoorne.

From small to big Just one more short anecdote. In the year 2008, the Botlektunnel was flooded because of the bad weather, and a lot of cyclists who were on their way to Voorne-Putten had to take a detour to Oostvoorne. But the proftour started, the late-comers joined in and so it happened that the tour started with a small group and ended with a big group. We hope that 29 July will be a spectacular event, with an unforgettable anniversary tour. 69

ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS

For Kids!

Beverbos The Beverbos is a natural playground where children can discover nature with natural materials. There are balancing logs and a labyrinth. Try crawling through a culvert to reach the water pump and pump the water to the surface. Or walk through the play island via the wobbly bridge or the stepping stones and have fun on the swinging track or stilt track. Do you feel like playing in the water or cooling down? Then pull yourself over the Bernisse on a raft and splash in the water. www.zuidland.net/natuur-en-recreatie/natuurspeeltuin-beverbos

Adventure in nature! You will find plenty of adventurous nature playgrounds on both Voorne-Putten and the island of Tiengemeten. You can build huts and rafts, build dams in a stream, stalk frogs, wander the maze or crawl through tunnels. And it’s not just for sunny days, because when it rains or the ground is wet, you can play in the mud between two of the three play mounds. There are also plenty of benches where parents or carers can sit and enjoy the fun. The elements of nature are your toys. In the Vrijheidsbos beside Brielle lake, you’ll see panels alongside the path with poems by famous poets, as well as some by children from primary schools in Brielle. Starting from the Tenellaplas visitor centre, various challenging activity routes have been marked out for children. You set off with a bag full of useful aids – view water creatures with a magnifying glass or follow your compass towards the ‘Beestenboel’ adventure trail. Along the way, you’ll collect all kinds of images of animals that live in the dunes. And for the little ones, there is the gnome path. www.zuidhollandslandschap.nl/Bezoekerscentrumtenellaplas www.tiengemeten.nl, www.speeltuinparkbraband.webklik.nl www.vrijheidsbos.nl 82

Historyland If you are looking for a fun and super educational outing, then Historyland is highly recommended. In a fully renovated farmhouse dating from 1947, a wonderful exhibition space has been created. There is a special ‘Mammoth Steppe’ exhibition where you can come face-to-face with a mammoth, a fearsome sabre-toothed cat, a cave bear or a woolly rhinoceros. You’ll also find an extensive fossil collection here, and you can have a go at making your own spear just like the hunted-gatherers of the Stone Age. Climb the tower by the Spiegelzee Pavilion and see how low the sea level was during the ice ages – but also observe that the sea level was once much higher. On the beautifully landscaped adventure mini golf you make a journey through history while playing golf. www.historyland.nl

Together with the woods, marshes and meadows, the area is 300 hectares in size. It has since grown to become one of the richest recreation areas in the region in terms of flora and fauna. Bernisse is perfect for exploring on foot. It is largely accessible – only in the breeding period is walking not permitted everywhere. In summer, Bernisse is heavily used by the residents of Nissewaard. You can swim, canoe and surf there, or just enjoy walking or running, and there are various fishing spots for anglers. A CONVERSATION WITH

Mirjam Eikelenboom

Forest ranger down to her bones

When we are taking a walk through nature we often don’t realise it, but the natural areas on Voorne-Putten are actively maintained and protected. The ZuidHollands Landschap is one of the nature preservation organisations in our area. They protect nature by purchasing land, maintaining it and making it accessible to everyone. They have been doing this since the organisation was founded, on 12 July 1934! High time to pay a visit to our forest ranger Mirjam Eikelenboom.

96

When we sit down together in the workshop, Mirjam enthusiastically tells us all about her love for nature, and what made her want to become a forest ranger. ‘I was always outside, even as a child. I grew up on a farm, and I was always playing outside with my friends, catching frogs or spiders. I think that’s when I really started to love nature. I still really enjoy being outside, and being indoors too much makes me unhappy. As I grew older, nature really started to amaze me. You can discover so much if you really take the time for it. That’s the best thing about my job, I think. Nature is the foundation, and if I can contribute to it through the work that I do, then that is really a gift for me.’

Zuid-Hollands Landschap ‘Zuid-Hollands Landschap’ is active in three regions, which we have categorized according to the type of landscape. The ‘Coast’ region covers the area from the Nieuwe Waterweg to Noord-Holland, with a lot of dune areas and farm lands. Then there are the ‘Peat meadows’, commonly known as the Krimpenerwaard, to the east of Rotterdam, with a lot of grassland birds, and personally I work in the ‘Islands’ region, including GoereeOverflakkee, IJsselmonde and Voorne-Putten. It is a large area with thirty six sites, with the common factor being the dunes and freshwater tidal landscape. Along the big rivers like the ‘Oude Maas’ there are areas where the tides change twice a day, with over a meter difference in water level. In the ‘Islands’ region, we work with a team of eight employees, and we all have our own specialism.

Together with a large group of passionate tour guides, I organise various activities like the mushroom excursion, the dune day and bat excursion, and for certain activities we work together with IVN Voorne-Putten – Rozenburg. We try to offer an ideal mix of learning about nature and experiencing nature.’

the orchids where they are.

‘The visitor centre is truly the entrance gate to the Dunes of Voorne. I would advise everyone to start their walking trip there. Are you looking for some more background information about the animals that live in the area? Or about which plants are in bloom at a certain time? The hosts at the visitor centre can tell you everything you want to know.

• Check our hiking and cycling routes. • Stop for a nice picnic in the dunes, and don’t forget to take your waste with you afterwards. • Spot the cows and horses, who help with the maintenance of the area.

Every day is different ‘I really love the fact that every working day is different. Every day, I have a new story to tell during dinner time. Sometimes I suddenly come across a roe deer with two calves, or I see two four-spotted chasers (dragonflies) fighting at the waterside. If you take your time, you can discover so many new things in nature. I don’t have a favourite season, but if you like flowers, you should go to the dunes in the spring. In the dunes you will find a lot of special plants, such as the Water Germander (Moerasgamander), which only grows on Voorne-Putten. If you want to learn more about nature, the harmony between animals and plants is also amazing to see. Such as the wild bees at the former airport in Oostvoorne. They only fly short distances, so it’s important that their food, their nest, and a place to hide are all in the same area. The wild bees can find their food on the willow branches with buds and orchids in that area, and there is also plenty of bare sand to build a nest with.’

History ‘You will also find a lot of history in the dunes. Most people know about the bunkers, but also make sure you don’t miss the ‘elzenscheringen’. These alder trees mark the old gardens of the dune houses.’ When we ask Miriam about her hopes for the future, she tells us more. ‘I would love to organise a ‘Read the Landscape’ excursion. Once you start recognising things, you’ll be introduced to a whole new world. It will be just like walking through a history book. Like the former airport, which was created so that the ‘rich and famous’ could come to play golf here, but now it’s an amazing place for orchids. Which is also one of the reasons why it’s no longer an airport, the soil was too wet. The planes got stuck.’

Route tip • Hiking route Boeren Zwaluwenroute in De Holle Mare, Zwartewaal. • Cycling route Twee Werelden, along the Maasvlakte. • You can download these routes, as well as other hiking and cycling routes on the website: www.zuidhollandslandschap.nl

Nature is for everyone, but it’s not free! The organisation Het Zuid-Hollands Landschap works to preserve nature close to home, step by step. You can also contribute. For example, you could sign up as a volunteer, participate in a nature workshop close to home, or support the work of the organisation financially. Go to the website zhl.nl/help-mee and choose in which way you would like to help nature.

Future ‘It would be great if we could organise nature in such a way, that we as nature managers would be able to work together even more. I would also love to amaze people even more. This is one of the things we do at the visitor centre. We have our exhibition for this purpose. To really make the visitor centre an extension of everything people experience outside. We adjust our programmes to this. We want to do even more to tie in with what is relevant at a certain moment. In the spring you can go to the visitor centre and tag along with a beautiful orchid excursion, in the summer you can bring your kids to catch water creatures, and in the fall we offer autumn excursions. Thanks to the contributions of organisations like Landschapstafel Voorne-Putten, we can make the experience even more comprehensive.’

The sustainable visitor centre offers an exhibition, a store with excellent natural products and a perfect programme of activities. The programme changes with the seasons. But I think the best thing about a visit to the centre is that you can talk to someone. Someone with a passion for nature, who can give you the right tips. Our voluntary hosts are a great help, we wouldn’t be able to run the visitors centre without them.’
