Joga Bonito! Just as the football climax had reached a crescendo in Doha, Qatar, with the crowning of Argentina as World Champions – the world was saddened by the death of Pele right at the ending of the year 2022. The legend is gone. Our first issue for 2023 has dedicated the front cover to Pele the King of Football.

Issue 4 also recognises Argentina as the new face of football, fronted by Lionel Messi who led the team with passion and intelligence in the World Cup. La Albiceleste are featured as deserving winners, having added their 3rd crown to the other two lifted by Passarella and Maradona.

The current issue of the Pass Football Magazine Zimbabwe, delves into the joys and thrills of the FIFA World Cup. The exciting Fan Parks and stadium experiences at the just ended world cup showed that the middle east can do it. The Editorin-Chief of the Pass Football Magazine attended in person, the just ended FIFA World Cup in Qatar. As such, this issue is more passionate and hands on with reporting from the ground and very close to the pitch of play. All the memorable world cup stories are shared in this issue.

New talents coming up through the ranks are also explored including the likes of Bellingham, Kendrick, Kayky and Vinicius Tobias.

Saudi Arabia’s exploits at the FIFA World Cup cannot go unnoticed and in this issue we look at how they conquered eventual world champions Argentina. Greater shocks were also evident through the hard work of Morocco who reached the Semi-Finals.

It is interesting to begin to notice the mainstreaming of Environmental Sustainability into the beautiful game. Stadium 974 in Qatar is such an example of the practical implementation of recycling as the stadium was constructed using 974 containers and is to be removed after the World Cup.

On the local scene, we remember Joel Shambo and his exploits on the field of play. We also take a look at the great African Footballers who left a mark at the FIFA World Cup since its inception in 1930.

As the Samba Boys wilted in the hands of Croatia, what is the next step for the soccer hungry nation. Tite is gone and new trajectory is being planned by CBF, maybe turning to a foreign coach and better game management. Still standing with a record 5 world cups, Brazil realise that football is changing.

United States of America, Canada and Mexico are already preparing to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It is going to be yet another global extravaganza especially after Qatar took things to another level.

Thank you for being our loyal readers and continue to give us support to develop this publication even further. Joga Bonito! Until the next issue.

REST IN PEACE – PELE THE KING OF FOOTBALL

Edson Arantes do Nacimento, better known as Pele, died on 29 December 2022. A dark cloud cast above the football fraternity, it what many believe to be one of the greatest losses to humankind. Pele, the Brazil kingpin, was the only man to have won the FIFA World Cup 3 times (1958, 1962 and 1970. A towering “Number 10” for Canarinha, as Brazil is famously known, Pele never looked back when it came to hunger for success.

From humble beginnings Pele carved his name into the annals of history. At the age of 17 years, Pele won the world cup in 1958 in Brazil alongside the likes of Vava, Garincha, Zagallo and Bellini. In the 1962 world cup he played a few games and still notched the world cup. In 1970 he underlined his status as the greatest of all time by winning the world cup alongside, Jaizinho, Rivelino, Gerson and Tostao. Pele was well known globally and inspired many footballers to become superstars.

PASS FOOTBALL MAGAZINE 4 5

Pele was born in Tres Caracoes, Minas Gerais in Brazil. He grew up in poverty in Bauru, but transformed his life into one of the most successful global icons in modern football. Pele started playing for Santos at the age of 15 and Brazil at the age of 16 years. At 17 years and 249 days in 1958, he became the youngest footballer play in a World Cup Final.

Football will never be the same again, without the King Pele. He is the greatest of all time. Pele was the one who popularised the phrase of “Joga bonito” “The beautiful game”.

As the legend finished his race on earth, many global icons passed their solidarity messages to Pele’s family and to Brazil,

as well as the football fraternity at large.

Pele had longevity of playing football for a long time. From humble beginnings he mesmerised supporters at Santos his beloved club. Later on being called to the Brazil national team at a very tender age is very inspirational.

In the just ended FIFA World Cup in Qatar, 2022, solidarity banners were raised by fans. Little did they know that we were in the last days for him. Rest well the Greatest of All Time (GOAT).

After the month-long tournament, the curtain finally came down to the great global showpiece. Argentina prevailed on penalty shootout, as the match ended in a 3-3 stalemate after extra time. Argentina notched their 3rd World Cup title since the inception of the world cup tournament in 1930. They have now won the tournament on 3 separate occasions (1978, 1986 and 2022).

FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022!

The World Cup Final, which was staged at the Lusail Iconic Stadium, attracted more than 80,000 fans, the bulk of which were Argentinian fans and it became one of the most memorable finals in World Cup history.

Argentina dominated the game from the beginning and launched marauding attacks from the left flank through Angel Di Maria. Kounde struggled to contain Di Maria throughout the match until he was substituted. Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick in the match becoming the second player in the history of the World Cup history to score a hat-trick alongside Geoff Hurst (1966).

For Lionel Messi, it was a final World Cup and one which would be pivotal in his legacy. Leading up to the tournament, there was a lot of talk and comparisons about him and other football greats. His performance throughout the World Cup as well as an inspirational performance in the final, ensured that he finally lifted a trophy that usually eluded him for the

Messi can now sit amongst the legends of the game including Pele and Maradona. One day as society goes through annals of history, a World Cup Trophy lifted by Messi in 2022 in Doha, Qatar will remain a constant reminder of his unending legacy.

Other Captains to have lifted the FIFA World Cup for Argentina are Daniel Passarella and Diego Maradona. Surely, Messi alongside the Argentinian team of 2022 shall remain immortalised in the hearts and minds of the blue and white. Vamos La Albiceleste!!

Mbappe Wins Golden Boot

Kylian Mbappe is fast becoming a player to watch. At only 24 years of age, he already has a FIFA World Cup under his belt, which he won in 2018. However, he was heartbroken to lose in the final to Argentina in the just ended FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. In defeat he still managed to score 8 Goals and become the tournament’s top goal-scorer.

Repeatedly, he is showing that he is one of the leading forwards in world football. The ability to dribble past defences and score crucial goals and penalties shows that Mbappe is well ahead of his age. He is a man to watch for many years to come.

The Les Bleus and PSG man lit up Qatar by scoring goals at will. Not many forwards have managed to bring happy returns such as Mbappe.

Scoring a hat-trick in the final remains one of the greatest triumphs of the young footballer. As Mbappe emerges from a final heartache after losing to Argentina, he will be encouraged by the fact that he has a golden boot that will return to haunt opponents in tournaments to come. Time is on his side and we have not seen enough of him yet.

Qatar Delivers Memorable Fan Experience

Football fans are an incredible component of the FIFA World Cup. In Qatar, there were 3,404,252 fans supporting their teams from 20 November to 18 December 2022. The World Cup had a lot of fun moments, team colours and solidarity amongst team supporters.

The Editor-in Chief of Pass Football Magazine attended the World Cup in person and witnessed the power of football in uniting the world.

Argentina Blue and white, Samba yellow, orange

Dutch, Qatar purple and colourful terraces were endemic.

When Casemiro scored a winning goal in the match pitting Brazil and Switzerland, the terraces erupted in song - Case-Casemiroooo, Case-Casemiroooo!!

Vociferous songs were sung from the streets of Doha, onto the Metro Stations and within the Buses. The crescendo reached fever pitch heights when fans entered stadiums. Fans draped in national flags and those of their obsession favourite teams, were all over.

PASS FOOTBALL MAGAZINE 4

Some decided to paint their faces in Qatar to express their fashion statements in support of their teams. Others wore feathers and this was in a unique colour combination. What a tournament!

One of the most unique signs of solidarity amongst the fans was the Mexican wave which was witnessed in some football matches. However rival fans could break its pattern by not standing up. Another major aspect of solidarity was the Pele Banner which was wishing the football great a speedy recovery as he was not feeling well during the FIFA World Cup.

The stadium hospitality, quick meals and beverages were very refreshing. Fans experienced Qatari cuisine and still managed to also encounter the dishes from their own countries.

The encounter of singing a song with a stranger on an escalator, metro, bus or stadium precinct, demonstrated the undying power of football to unite the world. There were many photo moments with fellow supporters too, within the stadiums. FIFA had an amazing song selection this time opting to go for about 4 official songs rather than the custom of having normally one. These songs sent fans into delirium and they would be played before games, during halftime and in fan parks depending on the choice.

“Dreamers” by Jung Kook and Fayad Al Kubaisi which was launched on the Opening Ceremony, proved to be very popular and inspirational. “Hayya Hayya” (Better Together) by Trinidad Cardona, Davido and Aisha was already an anthem before the World Cup and grew as the tournament progressed.

“Arhbo” by Ozuna featuring GMIS was a scorcher on match days and fan parks. The unison of the song brought a vibrant atmosphere in the Qatar football festival. “Light the Sky” by Rahma, Balqees, Nora and Manal became a favourite tune for many. These songs carried fans through the world cup. Even those who watched the world cup from home or streamed it from any part of the world, felt united through song.

At Souq Waqif, fans sat together and ate food. I remember, as the Editor in Chief of Pass Football Magazine, that at some point we found ourselves with my colleagues sitting together at a special serving room where we ate food with the Mexicans and breaking bread.

In Qatar there were no reports of hooliganism or violent fans, the tournament proceeded without much disturbance.

FAN PARKS FILLED TO THE BRIM IN QATAR AND BECOME HIVE OF ACTIVITY

The World Cup in Qatar had fan parks which had very big screens to watch football. Either fans could watch in the stadium if they had tickets or else go to fan parks. Fan parks had a vibrant atmosphere, just like you were in an actual stadium.

One of the largest fan parks was the Al Bidda, which could accommodate about 40 000 fans. At certain moments, fans were advised not to come due to high demands especially during the days of the semi-final.

Within the fan parks would be large LCD displays from multiple angles, music shows and entertainment. Food and beverage outlets offered refreshments for the fans. Games and competitions for fans were also available including shooting the ball to check the speed, aiming at a Goal Wall, football matches for soccer legends.

The FIFA Museum was brought to the fan park in Qatar including the FIFA World Cup itself. The Museum contained official kits of the national teams, posters of the history of the world cup from 1930 as well as the memorabilia from over the years. Each final had an interesting piece of memorabilia. The Official Trophy of the FIFA World Cup was displayed at the FIFA Museum.

Fan Parks were easily accessible by bus, metro or Uber depending on location. A lucky few fans could walk to fan parks due to proximity. Such was the unity and joy in the fan parks that days were short and each day was a party. Some fans would head to fan parks after watching their teams in stadiums. Celebrating together means we are Better together.

SAMBA DANCE CUT SHORT IN WORLD CUP QUARTER-FINALS

They came into the tournament as overwhelming favourites. Many pundits had predicted that “Selecao” would easily win the World Cup. One of the universities also presented a model predicting their road to glory.

However, the luck ran out in the Quarter Finals against a steely Croatia on penalty shootout. Brazil gave a good show but were not disciplined enough to manage the game and go all the way to the final.

After Neymar scored in the extra time, what was needed was game management and winding up time than continuing to attack and be vulnerable to counter-attacks. The victory by Argentina in the World Cup final also adds rivalry as the two South American giants are not the best of friends.

Turning back to Brazil, the team played well until the Quarter Final where they lost. The opening match, a 2-0 win over Serbia gave early hopes to the soccer crazy nation. The Richarlison double strike including an acrobatic kick, set the mood for an exciting group which also included Switzerland and Cameroon.

Neymar got injured in that first match and only returned in the Quarter Final. Other injury casualties included Alex Sandro, Danilo and Gabriel Jesus.

The second match for Brazil involved Switzerland and they had to wait for a late Casemiro goal to win the match 1-0.

Pele Facts

On the field of play, there was some dazzling Samba style football typical of Joga Bonito. The talents of Vinicius Junior, Neymar, Raphinha, Rodrygo Goes, Lucas Paqueta and Richarlison mesmerised crowds. The ever dependable Thiago Silva and Marquinhos proved very solid.

The goalkeeper Alisson was rarely tested in those 2 first games as the defence proved very solid and will still be for some years to come.

In the last group game, Tite rested the bulk of his first team to give them time to prepare for the next round as they had already qualified. Cameroon narrowly won the match with a 1-0 win through a Vincent Aboubacar goal. Unfortunately, Aboubacar received his marching orders for taking off his shirt.

The game against Cameroon gave Brazil a chance to play the likes of Bremer, Martinelli, Jesus, Dani Alves, Alex Telles and Fabinho. Dani Alves became the oldest Captain in World Cup history. Despite losing to Cameroon, Brazil remained a feared team.

In the last 16, they played South Korea whom they demolished 4-1. Vinicius Junior, Neymar, Richarlison and Paqueta scored a goal each. During that game, the Brazilian team danced the night away. It was to the chagrin of many pundits including the Roy Keane. Football teams have a right to celebrate their goals anyhow they feel as long as they are not breaking the laws of football.

Croatia was their next opponents in the Quarter final. As the game started, Croatia were very hard to break. The midfield trio of Modric, Kovacic and Brozovic

proved to be combative to Casemiro and Paqueta. Football experts like Tim Vickery has spoken about the lack of balance in the Brazilian team heading into the World Cup.

Eventually, the match was settled in a draw and in extra time Brazil drew first blood through Neymar Junior who matched Pele all time record of 77 Goals with a stunning goal. The Brazilian team remained attacking high up the pitch and were hit by Croatia on counter attack and the match proceeded to penalty kicks where the Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic made some heroic saves. Rodrygo Goes and Marquinhos missed for Brazil and the dream of a 6th star vanished.

Failing to European Opposition again?

Since winning the world cup 20 years ago in Yokohama Stadium in 2002, Brazil has struggled in the knock out phases of the tournaments that occurred after that. In each case failing to European opposition.

In 2006, they fell to France in the Quarter Final, in 2010 were defeated by the Dutch in thE Quarter Final. During the 2014 World Cup on home soil, Brazil was walloped by Germany 7-1 in the second edition of the Maracanazo, bringing back memories of the loss to Uruguay in 1950 in the Maracana. The 2018 World Cup saw Brazil losing to Belgium in the Quarter Finals. Once again in 2022, Brazil fell to Croatia in the Quarter Finals.

become Brazil’s bogey continent and if the most successful team in world cup history is to make progress in 2026, there is need for a plan if it meets European opposition in the knockout phase or earlier.

Joga Bonito is a style of play where the game is played joyfully and with flair but can it evolve to match the scientific and analytics dominated era? We saw signs of it especially in the game against Korea. But in the Croatia game, it was not smooth for Brazil.

Does Brazil need a foreign coach?

The million-dollar question that is now growing, is whether Brazil now need to look further for a coach. It is not easy for anyone who is not from Brazil to coach Brazil. You must understand the style of play, culture and the philosophy

There are some names being already thrown into the fray to succeed Tite who stepped down after the tournament. Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancellotti are some of the names being touted as possible contenders if CBF is considering a foreign gaffer. There is good reasoning to shift towards international coaches.

The game has since shifted to Europe and that is where competitive leagues are located. There is sponsorship as well. Most of the Brazilian team for Qatar 2022 was drawn from European leagues especially the English Premier League.

No-one knows if getting a foreign coach will work, but at least CBF can take time before appointing the next man to guide Brazil. The challenge is going to be regarding whether Brazil should continue with joga bonito style or begin to fuse this with other types of footballing philosophies such as defensive, total football, tiki-taka and other variants of the game. Brazil love their identity and have won 5 world cup titles with it. So a loss in a Quarter final will not necessarily cause an earthquake to see Selecao playing tiki-taka overnight. Brazilian football is built on skill.

PASS FOOTBALL MAGAZINE 4

What the future holds for 2026?

Even in defeat, Brazil looked strong. What is frightening is the age of their players. Most are in early to mid-twenties Vinicius Junior (22), Rodrygo (21), Martinelli (21), Anthony (22), Richarlison (25), Paqueta (25), Raphinha (25), Bremer (25), Jesus (25), Guimaraes (25) are very young and will be back in 2026. Thiago Silva may not be fit to play in 2026 but Marquinhos (28) is still in the 20s and is a possible next captain for Brazil. Neymar (30) and can still play another World Cup. Brazil may be down, but not out and they should continue to be taken seriously.

This group should be fused with the emerging talents of Endrick (16) who has just been signed by Real Madrid FC, but will join them when he turns 18 years old, Endrick may gatecrash and add pace in USA, Mexico and Canada World Cup 2026. Vinicius Tobias (18) is also a very critical prospect. Tobias who is at Real Madrid B (Castilla) on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk is proving to be a defender to watch. Arana (25) will be back to fitness and maybe Jesus (25) will hit prime in the late twenties as he is showing dominance at Arsenal.

Dilemmas for the next Coach of Brazil

The next coach of Brazil will have to give guidance on a number of issues. The first is the identity of the team and how it plays. Does the new coach keep Tite’s high pressing style which yields goals but is vulnerable when attacked? An example is being knocked out by Croatia on a counter attack in this just ended World Cup 2022 as well as losing to Belgium on the counter attack in 2018? Alternatively, does he adopt a conservative approach and have players in the mould of Carlos Dunga the retired no-nonsense football general who won the world cup in 1994. The identity of that team was based on defensive solidity and efficient attack, but was very well balanced in the middle.

Casemiro is 30 years old and may continue to anchor the midfield. The coach may have to decide whether Casemiro sits deeper to guard against the counter or continues with a more flexible set-up. The other route is to play with 2 deep sitting midfielders. In 2002, Gilberto Silva sat in front of defence alongside Kleberson, giving Ronaldinho the chance to be roving as a playmaker, when Brazil beat Germany in the 2002 final.

Another dilemma is on specific positions.

PASS FOOTBALL MAGAZINE 4

Does the new coach consider giving Ederson the number one position for Brazil or retains Alison?

As a senior keeper, one expects that Alison can catch or parry one or two penalties against Croatia. It is difficult to fault Alisson in any way throughout his career as he has been very reliable, but the new coach must decide who should be number 1. On the right wing there is stiff competition between Raphinha and Anthony. The new coach must decide whether Raphinha or Anthony starts. There are certain moments when Anthony came in where he livened games. Raphinha has been consistent since his coming into the squad.

The coach must also continue to find a role for Neymar

Does Neymar become the next Captain of Brazil or Maquinhos or Casemiro become the new Captain designates? No-one knows these questions until CBF appoints a coach. The decision to appoint the next Head Coach of the Brazil National Football Team is going to be one of the toughest, especially given that fierce rivals Argentina, have won the world cup. Brazil would like to already get going and get a team identify before even Copa America in 2024 and ultimately challenge in 2026.

Down but not out

At the conclusion of the just ended FIFA World Cup, Brazil remain on top of World rankings and more so with 5 World Cup Titles. It is good that other teams such as Argentina win the world cup and the team is humbled by France, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and Croatia in knock-out phases of the

last 6 world cups. This could be what Brazil need to reinvent themselves into a nation that was once feared. Down as they are for now, they are surely not out, and will be back stronger to challenge for honours in 2026. Vamos Selecao Brasiliero!!

Imagine 80 000 fans leaving a stadium such as Lusail Stadium after a world cup match. There is an urgent need to direct people through signage, barricades and crowd control. The chance of people getting lost is very high.

In Qatar, there is one such employee who would shout “METRO – THIS WAY” with a loudspeaker to show people the direction of the metro station. Supporters took the humour out of it and it became a very popular saying. Through this, supporters lightened up the mood even in times where they were waiting for their turn to move from one holding point to another.

The chant of “METRO – THIS WAY” became quite synonymous and popular during the world cup, especially inspired by the loud speaker announcer who had started. For merely guiding people to the direction of the metro, Abubakr Abbass became popular in Qatar as his saying became viral. It all started in the area called Souq Waqif where his chants became daily bread.

Qatar devised a plan of providing cruise-ship accommodation. These vessels were docked in Doha near rendezvous such as the Ras Bu Aboud Beach. The white sands of the Qatar beaches and the soaking clear skies gave fans a glimpse of the refreshing spirit. Swimming and beach football also added flavour to the world cup fans in the beach areas.

World Cup Fans could also have day passes to enter MSC Europa Cruise-ship. The day pass could allow fans to enjoy the world cup experience. SAUDI ARABIA SHOCK THE WORLD

At the just ended FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Saudi Arabia shocked eventual world champions Argentina in their first group game 2-1. Goals from Al-Shehri and Al-Dawsari were enough to parry off an early penalty goal from Lionel Messi. Saudi Arabia was led by the legendary coach Herve Renard, who has previously won the Africa Cup of Nations with Ivory Coast and Zambia. Renard gave a powerful half time team talk that inspired his charges to transform their fortunes. It is through such world cup stories that we appreciate that nowadays there is no small or big teams. Renard has made history at the African stage and now at world cup stage. He is a coach who many nations and clubs will soon be drooling for his signature.

The win by Saudi Arabia against the mighty Argentina, brings back memories of Cameroon beating Argentina in the world cup tournament of 1990. Oman Biyik, Kana Biyik, Mfede, Makanaky, Roger Milla and company shocked the Diego Maradona led Albiceleste.

The world cup shocks such as the Saudi Arabia victory against Argentina, are very important in inspiring many young players across the world to demonstrate that everything is possible and even if playing against the giants, victory can be snatched from the “belly of the beast”.

Bought by Manchester City and sent to loan, Kayky shall be a useful attacking player. Still at 19 years of age, he has been dubbed the next Neymar, due to his dribbling wizardry. Time will tell if he can fill the big shoes.

Musiala

The new German master shall be a marshal of affairs on the midfield for any years to come. At the just ended FIFA World Cup, although Germany had an early flight home, Musiala showed some glimpses of brilliance.

Egypt were the first African country to qualify for a World Cup in the second edition of the tournament in 1934. They were knocked out in first round by Hungary after losing 4-2. The tournament was held in Italy. The African side star man was their striker Abdulrahman Fawzi who the first African player to net at a World Cup. He scored two goals in the first round loss to Hungary.

After a lengthy absence from the global showpiece by an African team, in 1970 an African nation qualified to compete in Mexico and it was the first one which an African nation was guaranteed of a place at the finals. By the way, it was the first World Cup to be broadcast in colour. The Atlas Lions made the grade to dance with the best of the world. The Moroccan player who stood above the rest was their evergreen striker Houmane Jarir who netted Morocco’s only goal of the tournament against West Germany in the first round loss.

West Germany were the host in 1974. Africa sole representative was Zaire (now DRC) .The first nation from the sub-saharan region to qualify to the World Cup after beating Morocco and Zambia in the qualifiers. The then President of Zaire, Mobutu Sese Seko

was a football fanatic, so he gave hefty incentives to the Leopards players to do well at their maiden appearance. Zaire national team faired dismally in West Germany but one or two players showed few glimpses of artistry at the tournament namely Kembo Uba-Kembo. Kembo a striker who had an eye for goal, hence they nicknamed him ‘Monsieur But’ (Mr Goals) for his scoring feats for both the country and the then African club competitions powerhouse As Villa Club, the most popular club in Zaire then. There was Ndaye Mulamba too who was a tear-away winger and a tricky customer on his day.

1978 showpiece this time returned to South America and the host was Argentina. Tunisia qualified for the tournament. The Carthage Eagles gave a good account of themselves by notching Africa’s first ever win at a World Cup by beating the CONCACAF representatives Mexico by 3 goals to 1.The conductor of the orchestra for the Tunisians at the tournament was their elegant midfielder Tarek Diab who showed brightly throughout the group stage .

1982 showpiece in Spain saw Africa being represented by two teams after a great performance by Tunisia in the previous World Cup. This time Cameroon from West Africa made their maiden

appearance and so was the Algerian Desert Foxes. Both nations gave splendid performances at the World Cup. Algeria beat the highly rated West Germany who were current European champions at the time to become the first African national team to beat a European opponent by 2 goals to 1. Cameroon too showed so much promise but eventually bowed out of the tournament after drawing all their group games. To pick the ultimate star of the show from both African representatives will be a tall order as both teams had array of stars. Cameroon had Skipper Theophile Abega, Roger Milla and arguably the finest goalkeeper ever to come out of the African continent Thomas Nkono and defense kingpin Emmanuel Kunde, however the Algerian midfield magician who mesmerized the Germans Lakhdar Belloumi who was the reigning African Footballer of the year takes the nod as the star from Africa at Spain ‘82. Belloumi is famous for inventing the “blind pass”.

Mexico were the hosts again in 1986 after hosting the world’s most prestigious tournament 16 years earlier in 1970.North African giants Morocco and Algeria booked the two tickets to the showpiece. Morocco became the first African nation to reach the knock out stages after stunning the Portuguese 3-1, drawing with England and losing 1 nil against West Germany. Algeria’s aging side failed to replicate the form of Spain ‘82 despite returning to the showpiece with the bulk of the players from the previous tournament. This time, the Moroccan goalkeeper Badou Zaki and Abdelrazzak Khairi stood out for the Atlas Lions.

Italia ‘90 , Africa was represented by the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon and the Pharaohs of Egypt who were making a long awaited return to the global showpiece after becoming the first African country to qualify in 1934. Mohamed El Khatib, Hany Ramzy the libero, were the stars for the Egyptian side.

The Indomitable Lions came to the tournament guns blazing and set alight the greatest football tournament on earth by shocking the then title holders Argentina led by the irreplaceable maestro Diego Armando Maradona courtesy of a headed goal by Oman Biyik.

They reached the knock out stage up to the 1/4 finals only to lose controversially to England. Italia ‘90 belonged to the evergreen Roger Milla who at 39 was the oldest player at the tournament. Milla scored four memorable goals. The corner flag dance swinging his waist became the number 1 goals celebration at the showpiece.

The first World Cup outside Europe and South America, USA ‘94 was dubbed Gloryland. Africa had 3 representatives (a) The Super Eagles of Nigeria (b) The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon (c) The Atlas Lions of Morocco.

The number of African representatives were increased after the Italia ‘90 all thanks to the fine run by the roaring Indomitable Lions of Cameroon. The Super Eagles who were crowned African Champions earlier in the year were the African continent’s hope. They were pitted in same group as Argentina who had recalled their talisman Diego Armando Maradona from international football wilderness, Hristo Stochkoiv inspired Bulgaria and the Greek merchants. Nigeria won two matches that took them to the

PASS FOOTBALL MAGAZINE 4 33

second round to play against the Azzuri of Italy. The Super Eagles were clipped their big wings by the Italians who were inspired by the ponytail Roberto Baggio who scored two late goals in the match despite playing most of the match with 10 men after Gianfranco Zola was sent to an early shower by the referee.

Cameroon on the other hand failed to replicate the Italia ‘90 exploits, though that gunslinger Roger Milla scored in match against the Russians in which they were clobbered 6 -1.Morocco, the 3rd African team in tournament were just competitive aided by their talisman Mustapha Hadji. The stand out performer for the African sides was the giant Super Eagles striker Rashid Yekini whose famous goal celebration clinging to the nets after scoring a vital goal in the group stages caught the imagination of the fans all across the World.

The 1998 tournament came to Europe and the French hosted the tournament after they had missed the USA ‘94 edition after failing to qualify. In France, the Super Eagles of Nigeria who were now dominant force in Africa and the world after winning the gold medal at Atalanta ‘96 – became a favoured team for many neutrals. Austin Jay-Jay Okocha and Sunday Oliseh were the protagonists alongside Taribo West.

Morocco too, the debutants Bafana Bafana of South Africa and the perennial campaigners Cameroon had decent outings. The representatives from Africa had become 4 at this ‘98 tournament. Patrick Mboma of Cameroon, Yossef Chipo of Morocco, the late John “Shoes” Mosheou of South Africa, Austin “Jay Jay “ Okocha were the key individual players whose national teams were built around. None rose to the occasion during the tournament, bar a few individual brilliant performances by the mercurial ball juggler Okocha of Nigeria. All but 1 African representatives bowed out in the group stages. Nigeria, again failed to live up to expectations as they could not fly high above the determined Danes who comfortably beat then by 4 goals to 1 in the round of 16. As for the stand out performer during the 98 World Cup - we give it to the Nigerian midfield dynamo ‘Jay Jay ‘ Okocha.

The 2002 World Cup was the first to be held in Asia and also the first to be co-hosted. South Korea and Japan teamed up to host the World and Africa’s flag was flown by five countries (a) Nigeria (b) Tunisia (c) Cameroon (d) South African and (e) Senegal who were making their debut appearance at the World Cup.

The debutants Lions of Terranga roared and emulated Morocco, Cameroon and Nigeria to reach the knock out stage. They were the second country from Africa to reach the 1/4 finals, the rest were swept aside in the group stages . Senegal produced one of the greatest shocks in the World Cup history by beating the defending champions France 1-0 in the first match of the tournament. Papa Bouba Diop scored the solitary goal. As the tournament progressed, the Lions of Terranga’s confidence grew till they bottled up in the 1/4 finals against Turkey.

El Hadji Diouf, Papa Diop, Lamine Diatta, Ferdinand Coly, Omar Daf, Goalkeeper Tony Siylva, Alliou Cisse (captain) were outstanding for the Senegalese. The nimble footed Khalilou Fadiga was unstoppable though many pundits gave the nod to Hadji Diof and winger Henry Camara.

There was a great shock in African zone World Cup qualifications for the 2006 World Cup. Unheralded teams Togo and Angola surprised even themselves by reaching the global showpiece hosted by Germany in 2006. Ghana, an African powerhouse who had never made it to the World Cup did qualify, so did the Elephants of Ivory Coast and Tunisia who were the only previous attendees of the showpiece.

Angola had their Skipper Fabrice Akwa, Togo had Emmanuel Adebayo, Ivory Coast had Didier Drogba, Ghana had Stephen Appiah and Tunisia’s Rayid Bouazizi. 2006 World Cup, African teams melted upon arrival and none progressed

to the round of 16. Difficult to be pick who was the outstanding African player at this 2006 World Cup but Drogba, Kalou, Zokora and Jean Jacquie Tizie played well.

In 2010, the unthinkable happened, FIFA obliged to their promise to spread the most beautiful game to everyone in the world. It was the turn of Africa and the most developed African nation South Africa hosted the biggest football tournament on earth. African representatives were Ghana for the second time on the trot, Ivory Coast second appearance too, Nigeria fourth appearance, Cameroon fifth appearance, Algeria 3rd appearance and SA the 2nd appearance.

Much was expected from the African five representatives as they were fishing in a familiar territory but only Ghana’s Black Stars progressed to the knock out stages. They became the 3rd African nation to reach the 1/4 finals only to be dented to reach the last four by unforgettable events that happened in the last minute of the extra time of the 1/4 final match against Uruguay.

The infamous Luis Suarez hand ball on the touchline to deny Dominic Adiyaah’s goal bound effort and the resultant penalty miss by their striker Asamoah Gyan. It was a heartbreaking ending to a fine run by the West African on home soil.

The outstanding African player at this World Cup without doubt was the marauding and ever present Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan nicknamed the Baby Jet. Despite the penalty miss he was outstanding throughout the campaign for Ghana.

The home of football in the world is England, but the custodians of the world’s most beautiful game are the Brazilians.

PASS FOOTBALL MAGAZINE 4 35

Oh, by the way the phrase ‘The most beautiful game ‘ was Brazilian Pele’s famous quote. For the second time the World Cup tournament returned to Brazil and the 5th of South America after Uruguay hosted the first one in 1930, Brazil 1950 Chile (1962), Argentina 1978 and 2014 in Brazil.

Africa representatives were Ghana for the 3rd time on the trot, Ivory Coast 3rd time, Nigeria 5th time, Algeria 4th time, and Cameroon 6th time. Algeria’s Desert Foxes and the Nigerian Super Eagles were the only ones who reached the knock out Nigeria lost to France 2 nil and Algeria lost to Germany by 2 goals to 1 in extra time. African players who showed flashes of brilliance include Gyan, Atsu, Slimani, Badu, Gervino and Victor Moses.

2018 in Russia, Nigeria became the most African nation to qualify to the world cup for the 6th time, Morocco, Senegal, Egypt and Tunisia. The five nations carrying the African hopes were dusted aside and none reached the knock out stage. Like the 2006 edition in Germany it was difficult to pick the most outstanding individual player from Africa at ‘18 Russia.

2022 Qatar World Cup, the first one to be played in November and December because of the climatic condition in the heart of the middle east, the first one in the Arab world. Our Editor-in-Chief, Tawanda Muzamwese attended the showpiece courtesy of the Pass Magazine. African representatives were Morocco, Senegal, Cameroon, Ghana and Tunisia. All the African sides gave a good account of themselves only to be let down by the usual trait that has affected the African football. Discontent in the Indomitable Lions camp was

their biggest let down in a tournament that they prepared well under the leadership of the FECAFOOT firebrand President Samuel Etoo. Hakim Ziyech, Yassine Bonou, Hakimi, Vincent Aboubacar, Choupo Moting, Boulaye Dia and Ismailla Sarr showed great abilities. All African side posted fairly good results in the group stages but came short to reach the round of 16 bar Morocco who broke the barrier to reach the Semi-Finals.

Cameroon

Cameroon beating mighty Brazil, a first by any African team more so at the World Cup but defeating silence, never be negative. The only thing taking front pages was Embolo of Switzerland scoring against motherland Cameroon.

France

It is a conduit for African talent, it seems like every black talented child is employed as a soccer player. Huge industry soccer is and Zimbabwe must seriously invest in this sport. Even our own Benjani Mwaruwari made it through this country. Lines of moving our own talent to this country must be opened and the likes of Benjani and Marshal Munetsi must give us the blueprint.

Old habits die hard. Cristiano came at the backdrop of a famous interview. Ghana missed a penalty against the same opponents like in 2010 from the Captain though a different one this time. May Zimbabwe rise from the doldrums and bury its past mistakes.

Morroco

Surprise package of the tournament. They picked the best team of Morrocans dotted around the globe. For Zimbabwe to prosper we need to select from a wider net. The supporters of Morroco oh my God they were splendid and played their part. Impossible is nothing so Morroco showed us.

1283 – The number of Goals scored by Pele throughout his career.

Gone, but not forgotten....

When it comes to football in Zimbabwe, the word legend is often tossed around far too easily. But rest assured, the late Mufakose based masterball juggler, Joel “Mwalimu, Headmaster, Jubilee” Shambo was one. ‘Jubilee’, The Headmaster, Mwalimu, oh how can any term of excellence ever describe this mercurial ball juggler and flamboyant artist who was a tireless workhorse in the middle of the park for his beloved Caps United and his country national team ‘The Warriors’. A rare master of the chest control.

In contrast to the general leaning that a legend is someone who has achieved above and beyond in his particular field, the reality is that there are so many who go on to do so. But a true legend is someone who metaphorically, never dies.

He lives on, not only by his individual feats and in memory of many, but also through his traits of character. Joel will be fondly and forever remembered for his contribution to the domestic game, his extra ordinary talent and above all his humble and generous affable nature.

Throughout his successful career at his beloved Manchester road based club Caps Utd, he was also a valuable and influential member of the Zimbabwe Warriors squad. It’s always remarked that football in my motherland is in decline. Well, in order for that to happen, it had to have reached a pinnacle at sometime. That zenith was in 1985 when Zimbabwe won its first trophy since independence, the CECAFA

CUP with Mick Poole as coach, and a golden generation of footballers.

And so life called time in 2001 on a gifted footballer, an amiable soul, gentleman of sport. It was a sad moment not only to the green half of Harare, but the whole Zimbabwe. Madinda Ndlovhu drove all the way from the city of kings to pay his last respect to the gifted Mwalimu.

We will remember the sweetness of his crisp passing, the intelligent inventive football brains, the glue like touch, the swerve, the nonchalant, unruffled calm on the ball and the individual who always placed his team first.

R.I.P my captain, you left a mark in the local football fraternity. You are resting at Warren Hills cemetary (sp), please rest in peace our JUBILEE.
