An insight into Melbourne artist Lionia Singh’s world

Lionia’s vivid creations are as art should be – thought-provoking and captivating. Her artworks are on a grand scale, demanding attention while capturing her subjects’ emotion as well as their unique cultural heritage.

“I’m passionate about humanity, what drives us, inspires us and connects us,” Liona says. “I’m especially curious about different cultures; I enjoy learning about people’s backgrounds and the wisdom carried down from their ancestors.

“Eyes have been a huge focal point in my work,” Liona continues. “They truly are the window to the soul, never failing to reveal someone’s truth. When we look into a person’s eyes, there is an immediate soul connection. We are instantly reminded that we all have fears, dreams and aspirations – despite our social differences or cultural heritage.”

Lionia migrated from Portugal with her family at a young age.

“When we first arrived in Australia, we were surrounded by people from such diverse backgrounds,” she recalls. “It was an exciting experience for a kid to meet people who seemed so different to the family and friends I was used to. I soon made friends from many parts of the world and learned that we all had very similar challenges and goals. I try to express this artistically.

“My favourite works resonate strongly with others, sometimes in such unexpected and beautiful ways that I am surprised and humbled,” Lionia reflects. “People often tell me that they feel empowered or inspired by my work ... this is the ultimate compliment.

“Often I am compelled to paint a piece, only to realise later that it’s quite symbolic or has an obvious message. So now I don’t try to control the outcome so much and just surrender to the flow.”

While Lionia has always been passionate about drawing, arriving at her current path took time. After completing a degree in fashion design at RMIT, she cofounded a label that expanded to stock stores across Australia and New Zealand. Taking an opportunity to work in London and travel around Europe renewed her interest in the arts.

On returning to Australia, Lionia embarked on her journey as an artist. From oversized murals – beginning in her infant daughter’s room, then growing to include work with interior designers and display home builders – to currently spending most of her creative time working towards her next exhibition from her bayside studio.

If the sheer scale of Lionia’s work isn’t enough to grab your attention, the subject matter certainly will. Each piece evokes a different emotion and connection with the viewer. Colour, vibrancy and intensity mix in amazing ways.

g Lionia also believes in giving back to the community. “While everyone has different means, we can all do our part in lending a hand to those who need it,” she says.

“Life’s too short not to enjoy the journey and what you’re doing!”

Lionia’s annual Faces of the World exhibitions have been hugely popular and she has made World Vision Australia a charity partner, donating a share of sales to their charitable work.

Porsche Brighton has been a key sponsor of the event for the past two years, as well as an enthusiastic supporter of Lionia’s work.

“These events are inspired by my love of culture and the beauty and importance of embracing diversity,” Lionia explains. “My exhibitions are never boring. In the past I have included dramatic worldly performances – including Japanese Taiko drummers, Brazilian Samba dancers and a Bollywood extravaganza. I want to take guests on a journey that shares my art and also provides a feel for the train of thought which inspired the work.”

Lionia’s works have been spotted on Grand Designs Australia, with work also proudly on display at the new Monash Children’s hospital.

When it comes to her choice of car, Lionia is clear. “The Porsche design philosophy is beautiful. I see the artistry in every model. The badge is aspirational, and the engineering is obviously legendary, but it’s the sensual, fluid, dynamic design that grabs me.

“I’m not even sure how it’s possible, but it appears that all Porsche car designs have a classic look about them while still looking futuristic and ultra-modern. You can always tell a Porsche simply by its silhouette. For me, there really is no substitute for cool when it comes to cars.”

For Lionia’s recent 40th birthday, she became the proud owner of a Porsche Cayenne.

“I had once told my husband – When it’s time for an upgrade, I love that Porsche. I was joking ... but he surprised me!”

The Cayenne melds artistry with practicality. “I love the Cayenne’s curvy, retro shape,” Lionia says. “It’s a distinctive family car which fits our family perfectly – including Buddy, our Golden Retriever, who comfortably rides in the back!

“The team at Porsche Centre Brighton have a great attitude and have been incredibly supportive over the years – always so reliable, professional and easy to deal with,” Lionia adds.

“I’m really excited and honoured to announce that I’ll be collaborating with Porsche Centre Brighton in 2020.

“I’ll be holding my next exhibition/event at the newly renovated Porsche showroom in Brighton. I think it’s going to be a real treat for guests, who will experience a unique and unforgettable way to experience both art and cars ... a testament to how forward-thinking and innovative the Porsche brand is.”

When asked what drives her, Lionia quips: “Life’s too short not to enjoy the journey and what you’re doing!” It’s a philosophy she’s clearly taken to heart. • www.lionia.com.au
