WHAT DRIVES BELTS. THE COMPLEX INTERACTIONS BETWEEN BELTS AND THE RESPECTIVE TENSIONING SYSTEM MAKE IT NECESSARY TO TREAT ALL COMPONENTS AS A UNIFORM BELT DRIVE SYSTEM, BOTH IN THE DEVELOPMENT PHASE AND WHEN REPLACING LATER ON. THE MOST IMPORTANT INFLUENTIAL FACTORS ARE: OPTIBELT RBK In addition to the development of the belt (tread, number of ribs, tolerances), the special belt construction and the material used for the tension cords also play crucial roles.

GEOMETRY/ARRANGEMENT The arrangement of the individual components, as well as their pulley and roll diameter, arc of contact and the tension of the drive belt, influence power transmission. In order to ensure the required tension of the drive belt, the belt drives have various tensioning systems.

EXTERNAL INFLUENTIAL FACTORS Oil, dust, escaping coolant, heat and cold: all this can impair the functionality and lifetime of belts as well as tension and guide idler pulleys. Innovative materials (such as EPDM) counteract these factors.

ENGINE The more modern the engines, the greater the challenges for ribbed V-belts. Innovative technology such as automatic start-stop, vibrations generated by engines or the directional change of generator torque when starting (and possibly boost mode), which leads to an alternating tight and slack run, are just a few examples.

COMPONENTS The interplay between individual components is an important factor for the lifetime of a drive belt. For example, overrunning alternator pulleys ensure that the driving force is only transmitted in a single direction of rotation. The processed materials of the tension and guide idler pulleys (optibelt SUR), which have a direct impact on material wear during operation, are just as crucial.
