The Learning Lab (TLL) will service grades 6-12 at capacity. However, initially TLL will begin year 1 with a 6th grade strand and 9th grade strand of students that will total approximately one hundred and forty students planned for enrollment, but a maximum of one hundred and fifty students will be accepted during year 1 of implementation. During the first 5 years of the school one grade will be added to each strand until capacity is reached.

The TLL will expand to a maximum of 450 (444 taking into account possible attrition), by its fifth year. This school size will allow the school to start off small in order to focus on building the school model and provide intense individualization and support to improved student achievement in the first two years. TLL will then building to capacity in order to accommodate more learners.

The school will give preference to siblings and to students from the local school district and attempt to maintain a balance of the number of children with IEPs and English Language Learners in each class to ensure that the percentages are appropriate for the education of all the children.

For its first year of operation, the TLL will enroll 75 students in 6th grade and 75 in 9th grade.

The presumption is that these students will re-enroll in the following grades each subsequent year with a 5-7% attrition rate per year. The school will accept approximately 10% more students to allow for attrition. Each year after the first year, the school will enroll 60 new students in each grade level to follow implementation and sufficient new students in the additional grades to compensate for any attrition.

There is a high probability that the TLL will meet these enrollment projections. First, most parents of children who need options for learning in grades 6-12 are likely to seek enrollment

for their child in a high school. Therefore, enrollment in 6th and 9th grade offers TLL the largest pool of potential students with a demand for enrollment.

Purpose The Learning Lab will focus on learners’ individual learning goals and interests. Through the learning lab learners can focus on achieving and strengthening their academics while also exploring and targeting their interests as well as figuring out and understanding who they are and what they want in life.

Vision Statement Our vision for The Learning Lab is to develop learners for a changing world.

Mission Statement To provide learning opportunities for all individuals and create a society of conscious learners and achievers by providing individualized learning opportunities for success in an evolving world.

Goals and Outcomes Public education has been at the focus of constant but inconsistent change that has caused the federal government to intervene and step up accountability laws to surpass state decisions, district choices, and local school district implementations. The role of public education has been to provide a basis for the following elements: achievement of high standards, education for all, community involvement, evaluation of progress, and competent school board members (The Center for Public Education, n.d.).

The Learning Lab will empower learners to take charge of their own learning and provide them with options to reach their learning goals, through an intensive assessment process upon admission and the implementation of a carefully devised individualized learning plan to meet the learners’ needs. This teaching and learning model will be supported by a technology-based blended learning program that focuses on academic core classes (Math, Science, History, & English) and select electives that will be available based on the learners needs. Select electives will be supported by possible partnerships with Americorps, Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG), Liberties Kitchen, The Know Your Rights Program, Job Corps and other local partnerships.

Developing learners for a changing world ensures that learners that graduate from The Learning Lab will have actively participated in community-based projects and initiatives. They will also have a clear vision of their future plans working within that plan to achieve their goals.

Teachers and staff will work collaboratively at all levels to ensure the immediate needs, academic needs and future needs of the learners are met. The learner will begin and end as the focus of The Learning Lab. TLL educators want to improve the work they do with learners, their families, and the community. Whether its instruction, school climate, leadership, family engagement, or any of the other issues schools face on a daily basis, all educators need tools to help them improve their actions and methods. A whole child approach, which ensures that each student is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged, which sets the standard for comprehensive, sustainable school improvement and provides for long-term student success.

Alternative methods of educating learners are often sought out in the 21st century. Gradually more modalities are perceived to produce superior life-long learners, versus the longestablished methods. The variety of educational philosophies and teaching methods provide parents and caregivers the opportunity to select the program that meets the needs of the child and the perception of an exceptional educational opportunity.

Curriculum and Instructional Design 2Revolutions (2012) states “We need the new, technologically-sophisticated approaches for future generations of students, but we must remember that they are being built on violently shifting terrain� (p. 2). This means that learning environments are ever changing and will continue to change overtime. In addition, learners in those environments are shifting with that change. Therefore, The Learning Lab has created a core curriculum has the tools to change with the time. The Learning Lab (TLL) has created a core curriculum that aligns the Montessori Method and experiential learning model with the Common Core State Standards. TLL will strive to provide options for learners in the form of alternative learning, blended learning, career and technical education, college prep support, STEAM, Montessori practices, and virtual learning tools.
