Job Summary Under the supervision of the Chief of Staff, the Director of Truancy is responsible for conducting all activities related to student truancy. The Job will require functional accountability to both Finance and Human Resource departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

Enforce Louisiana Law and OPSB Policy as it applies to student attendance and truants.

Work with Juvenile Court appointed staff, NOPD staff, and other relevant agencies to reduce school truancy in the City of New Orleans.

Annually, in consult with school administrators, develop and revise a strategic plan to reduce school truancy within the Orleans Parish system of schools.

Serve as a liaison between the OPSB administration and alternative education institutions and programs to students’.

Prepare and revise Board Policy to comply with Louisiana law regarding truancy.

Work with school student assistance teams to develop and implement plans to assist students and families who do not comply with truancy laws.

Represent the OPSB in collaboratives with other agencies serving families and students to reduce student truancy ad delinquency.

Develop a truancy protocol to be used by all OPSB schools to address truancy problems in the schools.

Implement a data management system to collect, analyze, report, and plan strategies to reduce student truancy.

Assist parents with resolving issues contributing to truancy of students.

Refer parents to relevant agencies who can assist them with problems contributing to truancy of students.

Work on a team with school social workers to develop and implement individual plans to assist students with problems contributing to truancy and student performance.

Prepare legislative recommendations to the OPSB to improve services to students in an effort to reduce truancy and to improve the ability of this and other agencies to remedy the problem of truancy in the City.

Comply with all OPSB policies and regulations.

Perform other related duties not listed in the description but relevant and necessary to success of this function.

Other minor duties may be assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities None. However, works extensively with the Security Department, Hearing Office, and School Administrators to facilitate activities related to truant students.

Qualifications The requirements listed below are representative of the qualifications necessary to perform the job.

A. Education and Experience Required: Bachelor’s degree with 3-5 years relevant experience in juvenile services, law enforcement services, and/or social work services.

• Required to use motor coordination with finger dexterity (such as keyboarding, machine operation, etc.) most of the work day; • Required to exert physical effort in handling objects less than 30 pounds rarely; • Required to be exposed to physical occupational risks (such as cuts, burns, exposure to toxic chemicals, etc) rarely; • Required to be exposed to physical environment which involves dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes or similar elements rarely; • Normal setting for this job is an office/school setting.

Salary Range: E-09 of the Orleans Parish School Board Central Administrative Salary Schedule.
