Öpötiki District Council Electing the Mayor
Opotiki is my hometown where I was educated, worked in the old majestic BNZ before it was demolished, establishing a beekeeping business and after working in the Police in Whakatane and Opotiki my wife Wendy and I opened the Harcourts office in 2008. I would like to utilise my skills and be part of the Governance team serving as Mayor to achieve positive outcomes. Listening to the Community is important, to help make informed and transparent decisions that will deliver the best possible outcomes for present and future generations. If successful, priority would be building a team culture including Council Staff and the wider community.
Developing and adopting plans, policies and budgets is very important because the Opotiki District Council covers a wide area with limited resources to fund core services, future projects, infrastructure and assets.

I was born and bred in Opotiki and do not see myself leaving our piece of paradise. It is time for change it is time to bring our community together, maori, pakeha, asian, indian and our pacific relations, young and old this community needs leadership that thinks beyond the 30-50 year mark we need to be making mokopuna decisions and being good Tipuna. Lyn RIESTERER
I want to serve Öpötiki District as Mayor again to progress the positive momentum already achieved over the last three years. A continuity of leadership at this time of growth and during so many reform changes is a must for stability and a smooth transition through all of the impending changes. Öpötiki District deserves to have strategic thinkers around the Council table making the best decisions possible for the betterment of everyone. There is a real need for collaborative relationships within our District and, as well, at regional and national levels. This is a strength area of mine as well as advocating on our District's behalf within those relationships.
I will continue to use my passion, enthusiasm and inclusive leadership skills for all within Öpötiki District.

I married with 2 kids who are now adults and they are off doing Mylife.past work life, working 16 years for the N.Z. Police had me and my family living in Opotiki for 13 years. My wife, Kelli and I took our kids to Hamilton in 2014 to further their education and opportunities. Kelli and I have since moved home (December 2021) to Omaio to live. Now I am home, I am very keen to help create more opportunities for our own people on the coast. There is also a huge need to bring more services here to the coast, due to the government taking many services away through what they call "centralisation".

I am seeking re-election as the Coast Ward Councillor. I believe we have brought this community together and have given our shoreline communities a greater voice over the last 3 years. I am also running for Mayor of Opotiki and see this as a benefit to our communities. We have an opportunity here to ensure we make Mokopuna decisions and we are good Tipuna with the decisions we make. We need to look to our past to build a brighter future for our community on the coast and the wider district.

Tom BROOKS
I have lived in Opotiki for 35 years, both in town and now Woodlands. I am married and my wife Robyn has worked at the Opotiki Community Childcare Centre for 30 years. We have three children and seven grandchildren, who are of English, New Zealand, Whakatohea and Ngati Awa decent. We are committed to the Opotiki District. I have been in the British Army, English police and for 35 years until retirement in the New Zealand Police, specialising in the youth area. I have previously owned my own business. I have served on the Opotiki College Board of Trustees, mainly as chairman and been a board member of a number of trusts, including Blue Light and the Extreme Trust. I believe in Democracy, Honesty and Transparency. This is why I am standing to be a councillor for the town ward.

It has been clear increased engagement of elected members and their experience has not been utilized. We have also come through an unprecedented period of change, quite the rollercoaster ride of ups and downs. We were grateful of the PGF and it has made a considerable improvement to the look and future of our town, but it has created its own set of unique challenges. Much publicized new builds and developments have necessitated ongoing maintenance, which will require careful consideration to minimize future costs to you the ratepayers. We need an engaged and proactive Council, who through democracy and teamwork along with good advice, will make informed decisions best suited to Opotiki.

MyIndependentprincipalplace of residence is in the Öpötiki Ward area. I am also standing for Coast Community Board. I am a current elected member of Opotiki District Council's Coast Community Board for the past two terms. My knowledge of council processes and procedures has prepared me for a shift in council's role in our community. While I applaud the work and commitment of our mayor and councillors in achieving improved services and facilities there remains much more to be done. I will support council staff to perform and deliver programmes of the highest calibre in preparation for the years to come. All the work over the past 20 years will be in vain if Council cannot build strength, leadership, and resilience into our community. I believe council has a responsibility to ratepayers in the delivery of cost effective, targetted, expenditure for all projects. I am a farmer and orchardist with a talent for problem solving utilising the tools on offer. Climate change is upon us and steps need to be taken with a long term strategy that the whole community can have input to. As a ratepayer, I need to know if my annual rates are delivering value for money. There is a perception in our community that rates and services provided by council is imbalanced. I will represent all points of view without pre judgement. To our young voters, it's time you were heard.

Examples, C.B.D. upgrade, Heated swimming pool, support for more accommodation for our workforce in our local industries. They dont necessary have to be ratepayer funded. These are some of the initiatives I believe are needed for this community

I believe I still have the energy and passion to finish off the transformation of our community. Hard work over the last 20 years, progressing the seafarm and harbour are now beginning to come to fruition. The last 3 years has been very frustrating with a lack of Councillor inclusiveness, transparency and openess involving the community. Hopefully with good leadership and passionate Councillors we can progress what the town really needs.

I see the position as an excellent way to involve the voice of our people of this community, but also the bigger picture of providing a better place for future generations. I want to listen to our people's voice, creating opportunities for our community to be more involved, not be absent in voice. I have work experience in governance, relationship building and Icollaboration.willendeavour to put the concerns such as collection management, waste disposal, flood management as a priority, and apply improvement to local access and facilities for disabled with the help of community contribution. My principal place of residence is in the Öpötiki Ward Hello!area.Myname

My principal place of residence is in the Öpötiki Ward area. We live in challenging times and our people need a Council that cares. Our community needs real people advocating about real issues for the people that live here - not just the people that Ivisit.want to be a voice for our whänau that know what it's like when our rubbish can't fit in our bins and we have to wrestle them out our driveways; or when our prams can't get under the bars on the Motu trails; or when we step on glass at the park; or can't control the ants taking over our kitchens; or when we have to leave our district just to enjoy a hot soak. Our township is the heart of our Öpötiki District. Our people must be empowered to live in our uniquely 'Öpötiki by nature' Voteway. for me.....I will be the game changer.
