Read to Dogs When Willa Cather Branch started its Read to Devon program in October 2010, they were encouraged by the response of their community. However, no one quite expected the level of enthusiasm expressed by Max Hernandez. “This is the best day of my life!,” he exclaimed as he arrived to meet Devon for the first time. He continued to read to Devon week after week. “Max is always asking me if it is Tuesday yet… if it’s time to read to Devon,” said Priscilla Hernandez, Max’s mother. Since starting Read to Devon, Max’s reading skills have improved—moving him to the top of his class at school. According to Priscilla, Max enjoys reading more now and has the confidence to improve. “He wants to be the best in his class,” said Priscilla. “He says, ‘I know I can do it.’”
“I really like to read to Devon,” Max said. “I could read all night.”

“It’s a fun place where you can hang around with friends, use computers, dance and stay out of trouble,” said Delvonne Cross.
Friday Night Youth Summer JumpOff Lock-In After Charles B. Washington Branch closes each Friday evening during the summer, you still will find dozens of teens. They are there for Friday Night Youth Summer Jump-Off lock-ins (FNYSJ). Steven Taylor agreed. “You can be yourself. There’s a strong community bond and it’s like a big family reunion every week.” James Cross has been attending the lock-ins since they started five years ago. “You see a lot of teens that are usually getting into trouble—but they aren’t kids who want to be in trouble. At the Library, you don’t have to worry about someone picking a fight. It’s something constructive to do.” FNYSJ is part of the Summer Reading Program.

Dad & Me Storytime On any given Saturday morning, storytime is taking place at a number of Omaha Public Library locations—complete with reading, songs, dances and crafts. At W. Clarke Swanson Branch, a special storytime is available just for Dad & Me. Ashish Parashar brings his daughter to Dad and Me. “She loves socializing with the other kids and doesn’t want to leave when it’s over.” Another dad, Chad Jorgensen, attends with his daughter Win. “This program gives mom a break. We check out our limit of books each week and read them every morning.”

Board Silly While there’s never a loss for things to do in Omaha, sometimes it starts to feel like the same old thing. That’s why Omaha Public Library created Board Silly – a game night for for adults age 21 and up. This event provides a fun-filled evening with classic board games, as well as some new favorites. The event has become so popular that not even Mother Nature can keep people away! “What’s not to love about Board Silly?” said Stephanie Bell. “There is nothing better than getting carded at a public library to indulge in adult beverages and bottomless snack bowls while playing board games. My friends and I even braved a blizzard to get there!”

“It’s a great way to do something new and have lots of fun at the same time. I’m a fan of Catch Phrase because it’s a great way to meet people,” said Lynn Batten.
Florence Renovation One year after the Florence Branch almost closed due to budget cuts, the Library actually did temporarily close, but for entirely different reasons. In 2009, the Florence community and Omaha residents let us know how much they loved their Library by raising the needed funds to keep it open. In 2010, the Florence Branch underwent a major renovation—adding space, a meeting room, computers and more! The Library reopened in December 2010 and the response has been awesome! “During the renovation, we came to pick up books we put on hold every week,” said Michel Herrington. “The renovation has made the way we use the Library easier. Picking up holds is a breeze!” Michel homeschools her three kids and typically has more than 100 books checked out at any one time.
“Each week, the kids would peek into the windows and get excited about all the changes. The kids began to see it as their library,” said Michel Herrington.

Tutor.com Caitlin Mead had a problem that she couldn’t solve. As the hours ticked by, the solution just wouldn’t come. Then Caitlin’s mother, Susanne, remembered something she had seen at the Library. While working as a volunteer at Millard Branch, Susanne had picked up a Library brochure and tucked it away at home. Months later, she looked again to learn more about homework help through tutor.com. Caitlin logged on to the website with her library card, and a live tutor walked her through step by step to find the solution.
“Not everyone can afford private tutoring. This service is available late at night, so it’s convenient and free,” said Susanne Mead.

Technology at the Library Since she works overnight shifts, Janice Voreis really values convenience. When she read on the Omaha Public Library Facebook page about a new mobile app, she immediately downloaded it to her iPhone.
“I love being able to search for books on my phone. I find what I want, reserve it and even renew books through the app,” said Janice Voreis. “It’s so easy.”
Janice recently used the app on a family vacation. She used her app to check if OPL had a copy of a book she saw in a gift shop. Rather than buying the book, she placed it on hold at her local branch. The OPL mobile app is available for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry.

Friends of OPL Friends of Omaha Public Library (FOPL) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit grassroots organization dedicated to enhancing and promoting Omaha Public Library. Volunteer members raise funds with quarterly book sales, Internet book sales, memberships and donations to benefit the Library, its patrons and the larger Omaha community. The Friends provide over $140,000 per year to Omaha Public Library. These funds help support important Library programming such as author events, the Virginia Frank Memorial Writing Contest and Omaha Reads.

Foundation 25 years The Omaha Public Library Foundation (OPLF) celebrated 25 years of support to Omaha Public Library (OPL) on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Happy Hollow Club. Nearly 150 individuals attended the luncheon event where they listened to speakers including Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle and his wife Deb, OPLF Board President Kate Dodge and OPL Executive Director Gary Wasdin. The OPLF founding members were honored with a plaque to commemorate their service. Since its creation in 1985, OPLF has raised more than $6 million in private funds for a wide range of Library needs.

Audited Financial Numbers - The amount of Library program expenses and support has been reduced by $98,978 that were state-funded grants administered for the Library by the Foundation.
In February 2010, Omaha Public Library unveiled a new brand and website. “Our new brand and website are bringing the look of the Library up to speed with its offerings and we’re giving Omaha the perfect opportunity to take notice!,” said Executive Director Gary Wasdin. OPL’s new look and tagline are representative of the Library’s place in contemporary users’ lives as a source of one-on-one librarian support, databases, DVDs, CDs, books, countless programs and much more available at OPL’s 12 locations and from any computer with Internet access. OPL and the Omaha Public Library Foundation began the process of renovating the OPL brand and website in 2007. Webster Design Associates designed the new logo, tagline and launch campaign materials. David Day | Associates, Inc. redesigned the OPL website omahalibrary.org.
