Foreword Kids VII
Dear friends and collectors,
From three important collections as well as from the European art market we acquired a few important lots of the much soughtafter animal figurines and geometric weights from Laos as well as rare old beast and bird weights from Burma
The most important lot came from a German collector who purchased a group of Laos figurines some years ago from the fascinating Rolf & Ilse Braun collection, an extraordinary provenance We are pleased to be able offering 9 of these rare small figurines here on the first pages of our Kids VII catalogue as no 1 to 9. One out of this group of nine is illustrated as figure 349 at Opiumgewichte Opium Weights Poids d’Asie, published in 1983
Braun’s famous book is out of print, but a good copy is listed for sale at the end of our catalogue.
Another group of fascinating Lao figurines and elephant weights from Northern Thailand we acquired from the European art market
A third lot with a few exceptional pieces from Laos and Burma as well as some beautiful geometric weights from Laos came from another old German collection.
After four years of collecting, we offer with 101 pieces at Kids VII the whole range of the smallest animal-shaped weights and figurines as well as various geometric weights from Southeast Asia at outstanding quality.
Each of our weights and figurines has been carefully examined and described in detail. For further information we recommend the literature listed under Sources and further readings at the end of the present catalogue.
Please enjoy “Kids VII”, our summer catalogue 2023
Sincerely,
Michael HerrfurthPoids birmans laotiens. photo credit: Musée du Quai Branly, Paris anonymous photographer, 1920-1929
