GATEWAY TO WORKING LIFE PORTTI TYÖELÄMÄÄN
The Gateway to Working Life is a low-threshold annual recruitment event, where Tampere University of Applied Sciences students get to know and chat with organisations from different fields about their internship, work and thesis opportunities. The event will take place from 22.-24.1. 2024, 10am - 2pm at TAMK’s main campus. Event Days 22.1. Health care and social services, Business Administration, Hospitality Management 23.1. Technology and ICT 24.1. Technology Event dates are broken down by theme, but you should still take a look at all participating companies. As a good tip, a tech company can also offer jobs, for example, to a business talent or a media wizard! You can read more information about participating organizations in this fair catalogue. The event is organised by Students’ Union of Tampere University of Applied Sciences Tamko in cooperation with TAMK’s career services, student associations and clubs. The first Gateway to Work event was held in 2010.

The history of the Gate to Workinglife event is long, but it was only last year that I got to experience it myself. I didn’t know what to expect. The main campus was filled with several dozen companies that had arrived to meet thousands of students. The atmosphere during all the event days of the was indescribable. Students and company representatives got to know each other, there was a lot of joy and laughter in the air and a lot of chatter. Sometimes there was a bit of music behind the noise, and sometimes there were invitations through the speakers to seminars held by the companies. I was overwhelmed. This year, when I was able to do the event myself with the working group, we decided to expand the exhibition area. We aim to make the event even more accessible to students and companies. International students have also been taken into account in the planning of the event. The goal is to develop the event into an event of interest to all students of Tampere University of Applied Sciences, which companies also feel is important in finding new talents! In the following pages, you will find a few tips that you can use when encountering business representatives. Thank you for coming to our event!

1. How to prepare for the event? Students: Think about whether you currently need a future internship, a summer job, a more long-term job, a teaching subject, or perhaps several of these. For example, you can print a CV in advance, which you can hand directly to representatives of different companies. I also recommend preparing a short elevator pitch about yourself that will allow you to make a good first impression of yourself: who are you, what are you studying, what experience do you have, what are you looking for and what are you aiming for in the future? Check out the companies that participate in the event in advance and present yourself to them. Explore their websites and you’ll give instantly an professional image of yourself. Companies: I recommend listing in advance current open vacancies, future vacancies, possible thesis topics and internships that you can present to students. You should also prepare a short elevator pitch about your company, which will allow you to succinctly highlight important points about your operations. What sector you work at and how large the company is, what kind of talent are you looking for and what do you value. Students are also interested about workplace atmosphere and environment, and what type of assignment it is possible to enter.
2. How to act at the event? Students: Visit the companies stands at the event, explore what kind of activities they have and what kind of vacancies they offer. Tell them who you are and whether you are currently looking for a job, a thesis subject or a internship. If your needs meet, ask how you can apply for that place. In addition to visiting the stands go get your CV picture updated by a professional photographer and grind your CV to perfect condition with TAMK’s career services stand. Companies: Welcome the visiting students with a smile and prepare to present your business and what kind of talent you are looking for. Please point out whether you are looking for seasonal workers, full time employees or if you have chance to offer thesis subjects or internship.
