THE RHÔNE IN 2024 IS FULL OF EARLY-DRINKING DIAMONDS, FROM DEPENDABLE CÔTES DU RHÔNE TO MAJESTIC CONDRIEU, OUR MWS PICK OUT THEIR FAVOURITES.

THE RHÔNE VALLEY

Les Grandes Serres

Les Grandes Serres is based in the heart of the Southern Rhône, with a winery situated on the rounded pudding stones that are such an iconic part of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's terroir. Since the domaine's inception a few years ago, it has acquired vineyards spread across some of the region's most iconic terroirs, including Cairanne, Vacqueyras and Gigondas, as well as the broader Côtes du Rhône appellation.

The wines that have been selected for this offer include three whites, less well known than the region’s reds, but thoroughly deserving of greater acclaim. The Côtes du Rhône Blanc

is an approachable, easy-drinking white for relaxed, convivial gatherings, while the Cairanne Blanc is a richer, more complex blend that will turn a simple meal into a feast. The IGP wine is an unusual blend of lightly oaked Grenache Blanc and Marsanne that combines stony minerality with notes of garrigue and citrus.

The selection of reds brings us onto more familiar territory, with rich Grenache-dominated blends that marry generous fruit with structure and weight. These are big, bold wines ideally suited to winter drinking, but there’s enough freshness here for balance, too.

THE RHÔNE VALLEY

Four generations of the Fabre family have tended vineyards planted with the hallmark grapes of the Southern Rhône – Grenache and Syrah, of course, but also meaty Mourvèdre and bright, juicy Carignan. In 2023, the wines made from their vineyards were awarded organic certification, a sign that high standards of sustainable viticulture are the hallmark of this domaine. The pair of wines selected for this offer – both from the Côtes du Rhône appellation – diverge in style, with younger vines used to make

the juicy, fruit-driven Côtes du Rhône, while older vines lend weight, concentration and tannic structure to the sterner, more ageworthy Signargues.

Established in 1967 with 6000 hectares of vines covering an array of terroirs and 1000 winegrowers, Vignerons Ardéchois is nestled in the southern part of the Ardèche, in the Rhône Valley. The team is serious about vineyard management, employing techniques such as grassing the rows (to promote soil life and retain water), green harvesting (to maintain small yields), and methodical winter pruning. Each and every berry must reach its full potential.

The Mistral wind, which blows away the nasties, combines with the Mediterranean climate to provide exceptional conditions: summers are hot and dry, winters mild. Rainy springs and autumns provide the necessary water reserve, and come harvest, there is invariably an abundance of healthy fruit.

FRESH ARDÈCHE

France's best-kept secret

Ardèche is one of France’s best-kept secrets. This central region, on the road less travelled by international tourists, boasts jaw-dropping landscapes, classic cuisine and delicious wines. Adventure seekers will enjoy hiking or canoeing down the Ardèche River in the Gorges National Nature Reserve, while history lovers will enjoy the ancient caves containing the world’s earliest known cave paintings, dating back 30,000 years. Add to that more “recent” medieval castles and villages where you walk the ancient streets and you are taken back to another time.

Wine lovers will also find their thrill: vines have been growing in Ardèche for over 2000 years, well before the Roman conquest. Today there are 8500 hectares of vineyards and four Appellations on hilly terroirs (300 metres in altitude on average) growing lavender, olive trees, pine trees and chestnut trees in addition to vines. The grape varieties found in the Rhône Valley thrive here in Ardèche, producing rich and mineral wines, with the addition of one indigenous grape, Chatus. Indigenous to Ardèche, it is very rare, as only 60 hectares are cultivated. Chatus is one of the oldest grape varieties in France, cultivated as far back as the 17th century, along with Pinot Noir (most of the grape varieties from that time have been hybridized or crossbred and no longer exist). Chatus is genetically close to its Italian cousin, Nebbiolo di Dronero.

Opimian’s producer, Vignerons Ardéchois, is an award-winning wine cooperative founded in 1967 comprising twelve wineries. These producers represent 85% of the vines planted in Ardèche. Outside of the region, it is rare to find these exceptional wines. The cooperative is committed to biodiversity and is working to convert all its vineyards to organic farming.

White wine lover? Viognier does particularly well in Ardèche, on the light sandstone soils of the Cévennes foothills. Vignerons Ardéchois produce over 450 hectares of the varietal, making it the largest producer of Viognier in the world. It is this producer’s flagship grape variety and is served at the best restaurants in France, like Paul Bocuse.

Just 50 kilometres from Avignon, the Domaine sits comfortably between the traditional and modern, in the heart of the Rhône Valley. Elise Bosse-Platière and Yann Soulairac, who are part of a new generation of viticulturists, fell under a spell and bought the property in 2015, building a contemporary

winery and converting their 22 plots to organic farming. They have a range of soils at their disposal, including red clay, sandstone, permeable pebbles and silica, planted with 30 hectares of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan and Roussanne. Their wines stand out for their purity and body.

BEST OF FRANCE

Picking out sure-fire winners from France is a bit like trying to guess who wins the playoffs after a tight season. You know they are all good, but who gets the nod? Perhaps that unassuming nugget of a wine that punches above its weight.

Costières de Nîmes is the most southerly appellation of the Rhône wine region in southeastern France. The wines of the area are reputed to have been consumed by the Ancient Greeks and thus figure among the oldest known wines in the world. Château Bellefontaine, grasping at the Camargue and its vast southern expanse, is a terrific example of the new guard, turning unfashionable Grenache Blanc into concoctions that ruffle establishment feathers. Clairette de Bellegarde? This littleknown AOC, established in 1949, is Château Bellefontaine’s eastern neighbour, and produces dry white wines made exclusively from Clairette Blanc. OK, we have sneaked a CrozesHermitage into this section, too, but a bit of royalty never hurt anyone.

Red-fruited, spicy Grenache is at the heart of the typical Châteauneuf blend, but at Domaine Berthet-Rayne, it is inflected in different ways in order to frame two of the three cuvées offered here. The classic cuvée sees Grenache married with meaty Mourvèdre and floral Cinsault, as well as a dash of dark-fruited Syrah, to create a generous, rich wine. The oak-aged wine has a bit more of that rich Mourvèdre to lend density and structure, allowing time for the flavours of French oak to merge seamlessly into the wine's body. White Châteauneuf-du-Pape is still a relatively rarity, but this complex, layered wine shows why the appellation deserves a place at all the best tables.

Medium purple hue. Smoky tea leaves and strawberries on a fleshy, ripe mid-palate. The tannins are big and chewy - as befits a Châteauneuf – but certainly a well-proportioned, welcome addition. Finishes strong with a gentle hit of oak. 2026-2030 –nh

PRÀBAN NA LINNE

It all began in 1494 when Friar John Cor was given permission to make Uisge beatha (the water of life), but when a tax was introduced in1644, illicit distillation became common practice. By the 1820s, as many as 14,000 illicit stills were being confiscated every year (!), however, the 1824 Excise Act, allowing distilleries to export to England (and further afield) paved the way for the modern industry. Lucky us!

Pràban na Linne, producers of the awardwinning Gaelic Whiskies, is a niche company on the Isle of Skye’s Sleat peninsular, founded in 1979. Focussing on quality, it is proudly Hebridean and remains one of the few genuinely independent Scotch bottlers. The name translates to something akin to “Small smugglers’ enterprise on the Sound of Sleat”.

Champagne DoyardMahé

Carole Doyard is proud of her great grandfather Maurice, who not only founded Champagne Doyard-Mahé in 1927 but also helped establish the CIVC (Le Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne) in 1941. Today, the house owns 6 hectares of vineyards in the highly rated premier cru of Vertus, situated in the Chardonnay-dominated heart of Champagne’s Côte des Blancs. Purity, finesse and elegance are what Carole aims for.

Every step in the production of Doyard-Mahé’s modest 50,000 bottles is executed with meticulous detail, but it all begins in the vineyard. The team work tirelessly to ensure a controlled yield, and viticulture raisonnée, a hands-off practice that reduces pesticide use, has been employed since 1992.

Carole Doyard is a genuine trailblazer for female leadership who works with enviable flair. She is also a pragmatist who, having returned to the family business at 30, has the chops for the top table (and that in an often maledominated world).

Pale lemon hue. Expressive, bready aromas predominate. On the palate, gentle lemon peel and white peach support autolytic notes, with a hint of green apple and minerality to finish off. A fine mousse persists throughout, and this is a gastronomic rather than apéro style of Champagne. Enjoy alongside great food and company rather than with a 'pop' and splash. 2026-2030 –ja

Pale lemon hue. The savoury nature of this wine fascinates, but it's not for the classicists. Umami Fino sherry notes meld nicely with Burgundian flavours of honey, lemon and peach. A lovely structure and delicate mousse complete the act, which finishes with confidence. 2026-2027–ja

IMMERSION

Ageing wines beneath the sea has become a niche trend in the world of fine Champagne. The Doyard family – never slow to latch on to a good idea – decided to submerge some of their best wines for a year beneath the rolling swells of the Atlantic. What sounds like a crazy idea has a solid basis in science – the thermic inertia created by submersion at around 60 metres below sea level allows the cuvée to age gently, creating more intense aromas and more mid-palate texture, all the while preserving the wine’s natural elegance and the fresh acidity that will help it age even further when safely stored in your cellar.

THIS CASE FEATURES TWO BOTTLES: ONE AGED UNDERWATER AND ONE AGED IN THE TRADITIONAL WAY.

Chardonnay

Medium lemon hue. Complex, nuanced wine with bright acidity and a fine mousse. There's a subtle, biscuity autolysis to the palate that lends nuance, with peaches and mature notes of porcini and nuts. Take care when opening that the wax from the capsule doesn't enter the bottle, as, from experience, this will cause the mousse to become VERY frothy! 2026-2030– nh

TANGUY CHEVALIER

Tanguy Chevalier was born in Beaujolais, but now works with domaines based in some of France’s best viticultural regions to create a range of cuvées that exemplify the best of their appellations. In this instance, we have selected two wines that represent the quintessence of the Northern Rhône. The Condrieu delivers the kind of hedonistic pleasure for which the appellation is famed, with Viognier’s characteristically heady aromas framed elegantly by French oak, while the Côte Rôtie benefits from a touch of Viognier, lending perfume and spice to Syrah’s dark, brooding fruit and sinewy tannins.

Pale lemon hue. Classic Condrieu flavours of apricot/apricot kernel along with ginger and lemongrass, enhanced by the sensitive use of new French oak to add spiciness. Maybe lighter and fresher than classic Condrieu, though with the modest levels of acidity typical for the appellation and a twist of bitterness on the finish to provide refreshment. 2026-2027– nh

Syrah, Viognier

Opaque purple hue. This looser-weaved Côte-Rôtie is certainly ready to drink. The inviting palate entertains with black cherry, plum and dark chocolate, plus a savoury note and exotic spice twist. Fine tannins are the order of the day, and there is really no need to wait. 2026-2030– ja

UISGE LUSACH THE GAELIC GINS - 2 BOTTLES EACH: DRY, SWEET AND SPICED 700ml

In the nineteenth century, Highland juniper was exported to Holland for gin production, although these days, the interest lies a little closer to home. The Uisge Lusach (“Herbaceous Water”) series makes the most of native botanicals.

Sùg (“Dry”) is a true juniperforward London Dry, with citrus and cardamom back notes.

Sgealp (“Spiced”) adds exotic coriander and cardamom to the underlying juniper hit.

UISGE LUSACH THE GAELIC GINS - SWEET

A sweeter note adds generosity to a classical juniper style. It is fresh and invigorating, with delicate citrus and honey surrounding a core of obvious juniper. A hint of florals and citrus adds a pretty note to the finish, which retains plenty of juniper kick.–ja
