DEAR EPIC 2015

ATTENDEES,

I

We’re back with our BIGGEST EPIC yet!

ntroducing EPIC 2015 – the best, boldest and BIGGEST joint conference of Independent Stationers and TriMega to date! Building on the success of EPIC 2013 in San Antonio, Texas and EPIC 2014 in Hollywood, Florida, this year’s EPIC 2015 will prove, once again, to be The Place Where BIG Happens! Welcome to The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas and thank you for taking the time to join us here for EPIC 2015. We look forward to visiting with you over the next few days. There are so many BIG things going on at EPIC 2015! Let’s take a quick look at just some of the highlights:

BIG Savings On Thursday, be sure to visit the more than 140 exhibitor booths to learn about new categories, new services and new products to help drive your business. And, maximize your value of EPIC 2015 and take advantage of the tons of improved, enhanced and valuable Show Specials that are available this year! Don’t forget to check out the dozens of new exhibitors, service providers, systems and e-commerce providers, and trade associations such as NOPA, EDmarket and ISSA who have also assembled here in Las Vegas to help you achieve big results in your business. And finally, while it goes without saying, here is a reminder to make your booth visits count. Ensure they are productive and focused. Don’t just collect stickers!

BIG Learning We’re excited about the many different types of learning opportunities at EPIC 2015 during our knowledge and networking sessions. From a panel discussion on best practices, to roundtable discussions about the impact of the potential Staples and Depot/Max merger, to seminars on cracking the C-suite, furniture trends, jan/san and more – there’s something for every growth-hungry independent dealer. See pages 19-29 for a complete seminar schedule. Plus, you won’t want to miss an impactful and actionable message from Peter Sheahan, our Keynote Speaker, at our Thursday morning session. Thank you to GOJO and Domtar’s Enterprise Group for their sponsorship to make this happen!

BIG Networking EPIC understands that networking is one of the most important benefits attendees can capture at this event and there are countless scheduled (and unscheduled) opportunities during your time here in Las Vegas

EPIC Show Guide sponsored by:

to exchange ideas, share insights, ask questions and discuss those issues that are critical to your success. Don’t miss out!

Give BIG Once again, EPIC is also a place where GOOD happens – through raffles, donations and the first-ever Hike for Hope, EPIC 2015 supports the cancer research and treatment facility City of Hope – and for this year’s campaign Essendant’s Joe Templet is the honoree. In addition, the Next Gives Back event, called Pack for Kids, at Three Square Food Bank helps local area children who face hunger at home. Lastly, EPIC 2015 exhibitors are doing their part to help children succeed in school by donating post-tradeshow products to the Kids In Need Foundation. Thank you to all those helping EPIC 2015 make a big difference.

A BIG Thank You Events such as EPIC are not possible without the generous support of our exhibitors and sponsors, so a BIG thank you to all of them, with a special mention for our Exclusive Premier Sponsor, Essendant. We also thank the staff and board members of both groups and our business partners for their tireless efforts in making EPIC 2015 our biggest – and soon-to-be most successful – EPIC yet! Finally, we wish you an enjoyable and productive stay here in Las Vegas. If there is anything we, our staff or board members can do to help you during the event, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. Make it EPIC! Sincerely,

Mike Maggio President

EPIC PARTNER OF THE YEAR!

I

n addition to all the BIG networking, BIG ideas and BIG fun that’s happening during EPIC 2015, there is also some BIG voting to do! First awarded at the inaugural EPIC show in 2013, this year members from both TriMega and Independent Stationers will determine which of our contracted vendors will get the recognition they deserve – as EPIC Partner of the Year! This award will be determined by you, the dealers of both Independent Stationers and TriMega. So don’t miss your chance to vote for the vendor you think is the most EPIC of them all! What makes a supplier an EPIC Partner of the Year? Well, that’s really for you and your fellow members to decide… but we think that an EPIC Partner of the Year makes a BIG difference for independent members, works to help dealers grow and win market share, earns the trust of the channel by exhibiting fairness and integrity in everything they do, and brings BIG ideas and opportunities to independents!

KEYNOTE SPEAKER PETER SHEAHAN Co-sponsored by Domtar’s Enterprise Group & GOJO

MATTER:

CREATE MORE VALUE, MOVE BEYOND THE COMPETITION, AND BECOME THE OBVIOUS CHOICE You either create more value than your competitors or you don’t. The more important question is how.

H

ow do you become the obvious choice in the hearts and minds of your customers? The answer is value. You either create more value than your competitors or you don’t. The more important question is how. In this case-studyrich and highly insightful session, Peter Sheahan will unpack for you the results of a multi-year, multi-industry study which answers the following questions: • What constitutes value in the minds of your most important customers? • Where are opportunities to create more value found? • What capabilities are needed in your organization to find and exploit those opportunities over and over again, even as the markets change and disruption continues? You will be given a road map to finding your most valuable edge of disruption, develop the tools for building the relationships required to influence and partner with the right customers and clients,

and find the inspiration and courage to lean in to the complexity and solve the higher order problems your clients face. About the Presenter: Founder and Group CEO of Karrikins Group, Peter Sheahan is known internationally for his innovative business thinking and thought leadership. With staff in more than 23 cities across seven countries, he knows firsthand the challenges of growing a business in these rapidly changing times. Peter has advised leaders from companies as diverse as Apple, Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Hyundai, IBM, Pfizer, Wells Fargo, and Cardinal Health. He is the author of seven books, including Flip, Generation Y, Making it Happen, and the soon to be released Matter. Peter has delivered more than 2,500 presentations to over 500,000 people in 20 different countries, and he has been named one of the 25 Most Influential Speakers in the World by the National Speakers Association, and is the youngest person ever to be inducted into their industry Hall of Fame.

SPECIAL ADDRESS BY NEW ESSENDANT CEO ROBERT AIKEN This year’s opening session will also feature a special address by Robert Aiken Jr, who was named CEO of Essendant in July after having served as interim CEO since May 2015. He previously rejoined the Essendant board of directors in February 2015 after serving as a director from December 2010 to May 2014. Long treasured by locals, Red Rock Canyon is the crown jewel of the desert Southwest and is bestowed with lush springs, abundant plants, ample wildlife and unique geological formations. In addition to tackling Red Rock Canyon and one of three spectacular trails (Pine Creek Canyon, Ice Box Canyon and Turtlehead Peak), EPIC hikers have also been fundraising, to raise as much money as possible to support City of Hope, and this year’s

DEALERS’ CHOICE

We asked a few of our members for some EPIC tips and personal details ahead of the action in Las Vegas this year…

NAME: JAMIN ARN JOB TITLE: PRESIDENT COMPANY: OFFICEPRO GROUP: TRIMEGA

Describe what you hope to get out of this year’s EPIC in fewer than 20 words. Information, ideas and better practices to help my business succeed. What’s your best piece of advice for someone coming to EPIC for the first time? Relax, sit back and enjoy Las Vegas! And, of course, learn and don’t be afraid to ask questions and get involved with your peers. What is your most embarrassing trade show experience? When I also owned a restaurant and went to my first food show. I overdrank and under-slept the night before, needless to say I filled the garbage can right in the middle of the show and it was not pretty. Which part of this year’s EPIC are you looking forward to the most? Sitting down with other owners and picking their brains while enjoying an adult beverage. What do you think will be the biggest single factor/issue affecting the OP industry over the next five years? Technology is eliminating products related to our industry and the consumers’ habits are changing. To be successful, one must not only adopt and embrace change, but lead with it. Who is your OP hero/heroine? Michael Scott from The Office Who would you like to play you in an EPIC movie of your life? Bruce Willis What is your most EPIC adventure? Special Forces, I can’t say anymore! EPIC Show Guide sponsored by:

NAME: DOYLE HUNSINGER JOB TITLE: PRESIDENT COMPANY: CMF BUSINESS SUPPLIES INC GROUP: INDEPENDENT STATIONERS

Describe what you hope to get out of this year’s EPIC in fewer than 20 words. To learn more about current product; find product lines to sell and new technology to run my business more efficiently. What’s your best piece of advice for someone coming to EPIC for the first time? Really take time and talk to vendors that you think can help grow your business, leave with a few goals and a fresh perspective on your business. What is your favorite office product of all time and why? Paper, even though it is in decline it has provided a great deal of gross profit to my business over the years. What do you think will be the biggest single factor/issue affecting the OP industry over the next five years? Empowered users are the biggest issue of our time in OP. Whether independents can compete with the big box and online companies for business will depend on technology. What do you like best about the OP industry? I have always like working with customers to solve their problems, getting to know their business and becoming a resource. In doing so, I build long-term relationships. Which of the seminar/roundtable sessions at this year’s EPIC would you recommend as essential viewing? I would suggest that you attend as many seminars as time will permit. I always go to Krista for more insight on selling and how to work with my sales force. The last few years I have looked for new product lines. I have been attending the jan/ san seminars as it’s a fast growing line and I check in with Jennifer on what’s new in websites and technology. How will you relax after this year’s EPIC event? Actually I don’t relax I always leave EPIC with a sense of urgency! I’m anxious to share what I have learned at EPIC. I always plan a sales meeting shortly after I return to pass on the wealth of information I have acquired during the event. 47

NAME: MIKE DECKER JOB TITLE: PRESIDENT/COO COMPANY: LATSCH’S INC GROUP: TRIMEGA

NAME: NELDA FARRINGTON-BRYDON JOB TITLE: MANAGING DIRECTOR COMPANY: ISLAND SERVICES (BVI) LTD GROUP: INDEPENDENT STATIONERS

Describe what you hope to get out of this year’s EPIC in fewer than 20 words. I hope to find at least one idea or suggestion I can take home to our dealership.

What’s your best piece of advice for someone coming to EPIC for the first time? My advice would be to take it all in. Participate in as many sessions as you can and network as much as possible. This is a tremendous opportunity where members willingly share their knowledge of the OP industry and experiences. My business continues to grow because of the many ideas and information I’ve obtained from the annual meetings.

What is your favorite office product of all time and why? The 3M Post-it Note, because I didn’t think it was going to be that great of a product when it was first released. I felt it would fail. LOL. What is the biggest change that has taken place in the industry since your career began? Moving from most things manual to automation. The internet has been a marvelous invention. Who is your OP hero/heroine? Meg Smith at Newell Rubbermaid If you could invite two famous people to join you out at an EPIC social event, who would they be and why would you invite them? Pete Rose because he is always in Vegas and Tommy Chong because who doesn’t want to party with Tommy? What’s the most EPIC concert you have ever been to? The Eagles, I sang along to almost every song. You don’t want me to sing! How will you relax after this year’s EPIC event? Relax! Who has time to do that? Who would you like to play you in an EPIC movie of your life? I believe Grady Taylor, if he is available otherwise, Ted Danson.

What is your most EPIC adventure? My wedding day! 48

Which part of this year’s EPIC are you looking forward to the most? The market day tradeshow is my favorite because I get to see and try lots of new products, talk faceto-face with vendors, and address any special needs or upcoming promotions we could partner on. What do you think will be the biggest single factor/issue affecting the OP industry over the next five years? As Amazon continues to spread its wings deeper into the OP market, I see a continued challenge convincing customers that localized personal care and service is more valuable than a perceived savings of a few dollars. What is the biggest change that has taken place in the industry since your career began? The merger of Office Max and Office Depot was the biggest. Fewer big box stores should help us in terms of promoting our localized service to customers. Which of the seminar/roundtable sessions at this year’s EPIC would you recommend as essential viewing? Best of the Best, Dealer Best Practices Shared should not be missed! Over the years, I have learned so much from Dealer Best Practice sessions. The information shared in these sessions is always so invaluable. I return to my business brimming with ideas to try and on how I could do things differently for better results. What is humankind’s most EPIC invention? There are so many, but I would say inventing a spacecraft that could take man to the moon and back. EPIC Show Guide sponsored by:
