Director’s Note The Morning of January 6th, 1973 was a big day in Schoolhouse Rock history. Firstly, it was 10 days before my day of birth into this world! Secondly, It was the premiere of a set of three minute shorts that played between regularly scheduled cartoons: “My Hero, Zero”, “Elementary, My Dear”, “Three is the Magic Number,” and “The Four-Legged Zoo”. Step by step with my early childhood, this cartoon series took off and reigned the airwaves for a solid 13 years, winning four Emmy Awards and eventually being used in connection with training programs at educational institutions. The art of utilizing music (or musical and poetic sequencing) goes back through the test of human history, so it’s not a mystery as to why this series reigned in popularity during Saturday Cartoon hours for parents and children alike. Jumping forward to the Spring of 2021, we find ourselves slowly digging out of the debilitating Covid season of 2020. Nonetheless, Woodside Elementary School had the interest, passion, and ability to coordinate a schedule to make a streaming production work. Children were back on campus full time with teachers and Flex Periods were designed to allow school-hours to be dedicated to learning parts for a musical production. Most schools in the greater Bay Area have struggled to get back to providing enough school services to mount a full musical production so this was quite a blessing to be part of such an invigorating and bonding process for students and faculty/staff/administration. Big Kudos to Principal Jenn Pedersen for pulling the resources together to make all of this possible! The creative process was a blast!! The creativity and risk-taking the 8th graders agreed to was what made the art possible. Regardless of theatrical/stage experience I am pleased to announce that every single student put in the work/effort to bring together a very entertaining show! As such, we were able to give everyone in the cast a written role in the show and an opportunity to show off their own skill set! No wallflowers, no tree #3 in the back row. The process to pre-record all the vocals in our converted sound studio (Amphitheater) was its own event and unique process that the performers acclimated to as fast as could be expected. I hope that not only are you all proud of the accomplishments of the graduating class of 2021 but also amazed that they were able to accomplish such a complex show under even more complex social and safety conditions. It was my pleasure working and bringing this art to the stage with the assistance of three amazing amazing amazing producers, Amberlee Butler, Olivia Zwaanstra, and Robyn Cornyn who facilitated such a beautiful set, costume layout and prop inventory, and so much more! Gary Stanford Jr.

Producers’ Note Due to the Covid-19 pandemic that swept the globe, Operetta 2021 chartered unfamiliar territory from beginning to end. To say that the eighth-grade students rose to the occasion is an understatement. Learning the show while restricted to their separate classroom cohorts, the students rehearsed mostly outdoors while wearing masks and socially distancing. Overnight, they became recording artists and recorded all the audio tracks in our school’s amphitheater. Later, they acted and danced on the Sellman stage before video cameras, lip singing behind their masks. Even though they would not be performing in front of a live audience, our eighth graders brought their energy and enthusiasm to each task, and no face covering could conceal their excitement and gratitude that they would be a part of the Operetta tradition. It is safe to say that this Operetta would likely not have happened without the participation of Gary Stanford Jr. With warmth, kindness and patience, Gary brought his expert talents as director, musical director and choreographer to the production and quickly became beloved by the cast and crew. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Gary for taking the helm and doing it with such focus and grace. Woodside School parents are consistently eager volunteers and this year the desire to jump in and help was no exception. Grateful that this 63rd Operetta could even take place, the eighth-grade parents threw themselves at the opportunity to help make the show a success. We thank you all for your unwavering support and creative contributions to the show! We are also sincerely grateful to Method 42 for capturing, editing and streaming Operetta. They treated the students like professional performers and we are thrilled with the end result of their hard work. Based on the animated series first televised in 1973, Schoolhouse Rock Live! Jr. is a lighthearted musical with nonstop catchy tunes imparting lessons on topics ranging from grammar to social studies. But just below its fun and airy surface is the reminder of the ideal of equality this country was founded upon and the continued struggle for it ever since. In their collective beautiful voice, the students sing: “…Our heritage is mixed, so any kid can be the president! You simply melt right in. It doesn’t matter what your skin. It doesn’t matter where you’re from, or your religion, you jump right in, to the Great American Melting Pot.” Our hope is that the Class of 2021 will never forget this message of equality...nor their nouns, interjections and conjunctions!

Musical Numbers Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher nervous about his first day of teaching, tries to relax by watching TV when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music. A NOTE FOR THESE COVID TIMES: Roles were not assigned in a traditional sense for this show. This grade has 3 cohorts, and students only worked within their own cohort. Lines and parts of songs from each character have been assigned across different students in order to keep everyone safe and maximize participation.

What You Need to Know

Did You Know?

The CDC states that there are 476,000 new Lyme disease cases each year. That’s 54 per hour.

Some people with Lyme disease are as disabled as people with congestive heart failure, and have as much pain as post-surgery patients.

And children ages 8–15 are most at risk. Bay Area Lyme Foundation is a national entity devoted to supporting the best and most innovative projects in Lyme research. Lyme disease is the fastest growing infectious disease in the country. It is a potentially debilitating infection caused by bacteria transmitted through the bite of an infected tick to people and pets. If caught early, most cases of Lyme disease can be effectively treated, but it is commonly misdiagnosed due to lack of awareness and unreliable diagnostic tests.
