Black Men and Mental Health By: Dr. Darryl Hylton

In the complex landscape of higher education, collegiate black men face unique challenges that underscore the critical importance of prioritizing mental health and wellness. Navigating academic pressures and societal expectations can create a distinct set of stressors. By acknowledging and addressing these stressors, black male students not only enhance their well-being but also contribute to fostering a supportive and inclusive academic environment.

In this segment of Amplified, let’s hear from students attending the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, DC on why Black men need to take mental health seriously and what they do to make time for their personal mental health and wellness.

Freshman, Psychology Student

“I understand, I get it, I hear you…” are the things people dealing with mental health would want to hear. Having that reassurance and support to assist you during certain episodes with depression, anxiety, emotional dysregulation, and any other mental illness could be integral to how your outcome of that situation.

Sometimes, all it takes is a good listener. I find it concerning how the suicide rate for men is about twenty-three percent, which is more than four times higher than women’s suicide rate which increases annually. That means twenty-three in one hundred-thousand men take would take their own lives each year.

That being said, I haven’t been to a psychiatrist at all. I know I need to go see one because of my specific situation, but there’s this stigma of black trauma being the norm. Weather social media glorifies black families being broken households, or just glorifying being independent when you shouldn’t be. Tv shows stereotyping black men in favor of colorism. The point is with all this brainwashing, there’s always going to be this voice in your head telling you how you should be someone else. That’s why I choose to become a Nero-scientist, and a psychiatrist to better the lives of others.

African American males and Black men have long been a testament to the idea that "it will all be fine in the end." On average, 25% of male Black males seek help, and in some cases, fewer than that. I believe it is critical to not just care for and speak about the mental health of black males but also to make efforts to begin making an impact on elevating the level of black mental health worldwide. When it comes to my mental peace yoga, meditation, and immersing myself in a calm environment while drawing or working in graphic design are some of my methods for achieving healthier and more serene mental health. Not everyone approaches discovering their mental wellness in the same manner; I've seen individuals read, exercise, work on projects, and even play video games. Finding and sustaining mental stability involves engaging in activities or behaviors that make you joyful and make it easier to get through the day.

Apart of my mental health care consists of me taking the time to journal and self-reflect.

My self-reflection is very important to me because it's the time where I look back at all of the growth I've endured and the self-improvement I must make. I recently looked at a quote that stated, "Just remember 5 years ago, you dreamed about where you are now." I thought about it, and I haven't seen where my dreams relate to the reality that I'm in right now, but the pieces are slowly coming together for me. As for my wellness, I feel as though I've slacked terribly with it this year and plan to get back in the groove of it next year. I miss making time for journaling, getting my monthly facials, drinking healthboosting teas on my restful days, exercising every morning, and just overall managing my health and inner-body. I also would like to be more entuned with my mind and body on a deeper level. I think that doing all of this will contribute to my success in the new year.

Travis Henderson

Senior, Business Management Student Black men must prioritize their mental health due to the intersectionality of race and gender, which often subjects them to unique stressors and systemic pressures. Acknowledging mental health concerns fosters resilience, breaks stigmas, and promotes holistic well-being.

I carve out time for mental health through intentional self-care practices. Establishing a routine that includes exercise, mindfulness, and engaging with a support network has been instrumental. Additionally, I prioritize self-reflection and set boundaries to manage stress.

Recognizing that mental health is an ongoing journey, I challenge stereotypes and embrace vulnerability, fostering a culture that encourages open dialogue. This not only benefits the individual but also contributes to breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health within the broader Black male collegiate community. By championing our mental health, we not only enhance individual lives but also contribute to dismantling the stigma surrounding mental wellness within the Black male collegiate experience.

Sophomore, Biology Student

As a black male I think mental health is important as a result of the effects that it may have on an individual. The impacts of a negative mental health can cause a male to isolate himself, fall into depression, develop low self-esteem and frustration, all of which sets him up for failure in achieving his goals and aspirations basically killing his dreams and leaving him non ambitious. Taking time out to engage in things you enjoy and makes you happy can make the results from your hard work and dedication so much more honorable.

In dealing with my mental health, I engage in person care routines and regimes such as getting a pedicure/manicure, haircut, etc and other hobbies of mine such as making TikTok videos, conversing with friends, getting dressed up a d taking Instagram photos, making outfits, and going to the gym amongst other things.

Being an African American male, I’ve naturally seen black male figures in my life neglect their mental health. Which is a complete disservice for our community because we look for our men to be strong physically as well as mentally. Understanding that you do need to take time to yourself to decompress and evaluate how you are feeling constantly in all facets is important. By doing this you can stop yourself from falling into depression, anxiety, substance abuse and social isolation just to name a few.

Being a student athlete comes with a lot of responsibility and or for me to stay balance and in control I take the time out to meditate. It’s my time to put the world on pause acknowledge my inner self and evaluate how I am doing. I spend time around the people I love and use it as motivation to keep me pushing.

Dr. Jenard Moore is an influential staff member and mentor who has a strong commitment to advancing male students at North Carolina A&T State University. As we shine highlight his work, it is clear that Dr. Moore's passion for male achievement provides a transformational experience for students.

Tell us a little about your background, who you are, where you're from, etc.

Greetings, I'm Dr. Jenard D. Moore, a proud native of WinstonSalem, NC, and a passionate advocate for education and success.

Embarking on my academic journey in 2008 at the renowned North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University (NCAT), the largest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the nation, my four years of undergrad were nothing short of extraordinary!

After earning my Bachelor of Arts in English in 2012, I delved into higher education, obtaining a Master’s degree in Human Services from Argosy University and later achieving a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership from Liberty University. My doctoral research focused on the success factors of Black males attending HBCUs, a topic close to my heart. Let me share a bit of my personal life – I'm a proud girl dad with two wonderful daughters, and my love story with my wife began in college, where we met in 2010! I did not shoot my shot with her until 2016, and we were married the same year! We’ve hosted our millennial marriage podcast since December 2017. Besides being an avid reader and lifelong learner, I find joy in helping individuals reach their potential and creating lasting memories through travel with my family. I want you to know that I believe in you! Whatever aspirations you have, they are within reach with dedication and a focused mindset. Embrace the philosophy of "Commit to walking in your purpose every day," and strive to become the best version of yourself in all aspects of life.

What does mentorship mean to you?

Mentorship has played a pivotal role in shaping my journey towards success, and I firmly believe that everyone aspiring to be their best selves should have a mentor by their side. The adage "iron sharpens iron" resonates with me deeply. Throughout my life, I've been fortunate to have mentors who imparted invaluable life lessons, contributing significantly to the person I am today. These mentors were instrumental in not only encouraging and motivating me but also in modeling positive soft and hard skills, showcasing how to navigate various situations.

Currently serving as the Director of the Black Male Initiative at North Carolina A&T State University, I find immense fulfillment in passing on the wisdom and lessons gleaned from my mentors to the next generation. It's a profound experience to realize how much I sound like one of my mentors when engaging with students. Reflecting on my own journey, I acknowledge that the path of being mentored wasn't always easy, as I initially thought I knew best. However, with the passage of time, I've come to understand that my mentors were guiding me toward becoming a better man.

Being a mentor is a gratifying experience, especially witnessing individuals take your advice to heart and embark on a journey of personal growth. The cycle of mentorship, where wisdom is passed down and then paid forward, is a powerful force for positive transformation.

Who are the mentors (if any) that have had the most significant influence on you? What was the best piece of advice they gave you?

My journey has been profoundly shaped by the mentorship of my parents, who served as guiding lights in various aspects of my life. From my earliest years, my mother, a fervent advocate for education, took me to events focused on learning, instilling in me a passion for academic excellence. She constantly reinforced the idea that I am a leader, not a follower. I vividly recall instances where, in the face of trouble, her admonition began with, "You're a leader; leaders don't act like that." This positive reinforcement became a transformative force, influencing my behavior and inspiring me to adopt a similar approach with my own daughters and mentees.

Another influential mentor in my life was my football coach, Wayne Rousseau. He championed the idea of pushing beyond one's expectations, teaching valuable lessons about leadership through personal example. The resonant quote he shared, "It's hard, but it's fair," became a mantra during our practices and games, serving as a source of motivation when our limits were tested. I've carried this lesson into life, particularly on my educational journey, where perseverance and resilience are key.

My grandfather, Dr. H.L. Moore, affectionately known as Pop, embodied the essence of a theologian and educator. With over 40 years of pastoral service and two earned Ph.D.'s, Pop was a beacon of wisdom and humanitarianism. During moments in his den, I pledged to continue our family legacy of Ph.D.'s. His mentorship and the way he carried himself became an unconscious influence, shaping who I am today. Family members often draw parallels between my actions and those of Pop, a tribute to the enduring impact of his guidance on my character.

Tell us a bit more about the work you do around mentorship?

My dedication to mentorship is fueled by a deep desire to contribute and support others. Throughout my journey, mentors have played a pivotal role, pushing me to surpass boundaries. Recognizing the challenges I faced as a student of color in the K-12 system, I decided early on to focus on working with male students, particularly those from similar backgrounds.

Having experienced stereotyping and mislabeling firsthand, I empathize with the struggles many young black boys encounter in the education system. Growing up, I was unfairly deemed "hyper" and even faced pressure to medicate my natural energy. I vividly recall a moment in second grade when a reading aptitude test painted an inaccurate picture of my abilities. Despite my initial nervousness and a disappointing first attempt, my mother, a constant advocate for my education, intervened. She insisted on a retest in a different setting, revealing my true proficiency in reading.

My commitment to the success of black male students stems from these personal experiences. I aim to be a voice for those without advocates, firmly believing that cultural misunderstandings and implicit biases contribute to the quick labeling of black male students in K-12 education. My mentoring journey has taken me to numerous Title 1 schools across America, reflecting my heartfelt aspiration to impact and uplift as many students as possible.

What has been the most rewarding experience working with young black males?

The most gratifying aspect of engaging in this work is witnessing the moment when students experience a breakthrough, and the realization dawns on them as they embark on the journey to become their best selves. Mentoring demands a considerable amount of patience as it involves working with a diverse group of individuals, each with their unique characteristics. While some grasp the concepts more swiftly than others, my overarching objective is to ensure that every mentee achieves their aspirations, fostering a supportive environment tailored to their individual needs.

What specific advice would you give those looking to mentor Black men?

Responding to this question entails offering a wealth of advice, and I'll present what I consider the most crucial points in a non-ranked list: 1. Patience is key: Guide, but allow your mentees to choose their own paths.

2. Trust is paramount: Building trust takes time; don't force it. As Black men, trust is vital, and it's earned, not imposed.

3. Value relationships: See your mentees as individuals, not just numbers. Take the time to know them personally.

4. Embrace transparency: Share relatable experiences authentically.Use discretion but be open about your journey, even sharing setbacks.

5. Communication matters: Your word is your bond; choose your words wisely. Only commit to what you can follow through on.

6. Uplift always: Even in challenging situations, empower from a place of love. Counteract historical negativity with positive reinforcement.

7. Tap into competitiveness: Find what motivates each individual; it's not always sports. Tailor challenges to their unique interests.

8. Understand their 'why': Knowing their motivation enhances understanding.

9. Patience with yourself: Mentoring is a learning process; improvement takes time. Strive to be the best version of yourself for your mentees.

10. Be mindful of your influence: Model the behavior you want your mentees to emulate. Actions speak louder than words; mentees observe and learn.

11. Continuously reach back: Never cease helping the next generation. Your impact extends beyond the immediate mentees; it's a cycle of support.
