IMPACT REPORT 2023

Operation Delta Dog has a dual-purpose mission: to rescue shelter dogs at-risk of euthanasia and train them as service companions for veterans at-risk of suicide–potentially saving the lives of both veterans and their companions.

We serve veterans of all ages, branches and backgrounds experiencing the “invisible” disabilities of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury and Military Sexual Trauma throughout northern Massachusetts and the southern and lakes regions of New Hampshire.

A MESSAGE FROM CHARLOTTE

We’re over the moon with excitement and pride as we celebrate 2023, a very special milestone for Operation Delta Dog—our 10th Anniversary! A decade of solidarity with the men and women who put service over self. A decade of compassion for shelter dogs with so much to offer. A decade of building a community built upon caring and camaraderie.

Ten years on, our mission is unchanged: preventing veteran suicide in the regions we serve by matching at-risk vets with rescued dogs, along with an array of supports, to empower the return to a healthy and happy civilian life.

"Delta" means change—reflecting the transformation of shelter dogs into companions trained to combat depression, anxiety, and isolation, and the profound healing a Delta Dog brings to a veteran battling PTSD, TBI or MST. The unbreakable bond forged between two trauma survivors is the foundation for a brand new start for a veteran and their best friend. Which is what we mean when we say, “Rescue One, Save Two.”

We serve a growing veteran population that is chronically underserved and undertreated. We’re rescuing more dogs than ever to pair with a growing list of vets waiting for support. The year ahead brings exciting opportunities to meet this challenge, with the opening of two new satellite facilities one serving Jamaica Plain, MA, as part of the Veterans Administration where regular training classes are already in full swing and one based in Franklin, NH, as part of the new 15 acre, state of the art Veterans Campus.

We’re thankful for the opening of our new Felicia Rose Foster Home—a much needed addition that expands our capacity to care for non-program dogs—ensuring we keep our promise of a forever home for every dog we rescue, while also making possible the placement of more shelter dogs in the future.

Operation Delta Dog is the hub of a vibrant community. The dedication of our team reflects the deep emotional investment in their work. Staff and volunteers are closely involved with the struggles and victories of every veteran—celebrating milestones, providing support through challenges, accompanying vets and their dogs on outings, and availing themselves as advocates to ensure success upon graduation, and beyond.

We’re immensely grateful to the veterans who put their trust in us through their training journey. Dedicating oneself to a year or more of an intense process is no small commitment, and crossing the finish line to graduation day is a shining testament to their determination to live their best possible lives.

Just as the veterans we serve put their trust in us, we put a tremendous amount of trust in our community. We sent out the call to help us double the number of dogs we rescue and pair with veterans in the coming year, and the community has answered, cheering us on the whole way. Thank you.

We invite you to get involved however you can host a gathering to share the mission with friends, stop in to brighten a dog’s day with a walk, or offer up your love and your home as a foster guardian.

Our collective vision for the future is stronger than ever, built upon the timeless human/canine bond, forged in compassion and driven by the love of a growing community sharing the credo of action above words, and understanding, above all.

Here’s to another ten years of rescuing, learning and healing together. Thanks for being a part of it with us!

1-on-1Attention

Our team takes the time to understand the unique personalities and needs of each veteran starting out in our program. Our holistic approach includes individualized and group case management as they begintheprocessof trainingandpreparingfortheirDeltaDog.

Matching&Training

Vets are tailor-matched with a rescued dog, who has completed an intensive 12 week training program. After 4-6 weeks, their new buddy comes home with them. Training together continues on site twice a week,inadditiontoone-on-onehomesessions, for12-18months.

BattleBuddies

Graduates can volunteer to receive training in Intentional Peer Mentoring and act as "Battle Buddies" to provide encouragement and friendship in support of their fellow vets. Battle Buddies may come along on public outing exercises, or just be there to talk through the roughpatches.

GraduationDay

A very special day, graduation is a culmination of lots of hard work andrelationshipbuildingbetweenavetandtheirdog. It’sacelebration of a major milestone for the veteran, who has gained a close companionandhelper-andforthenewlymintedDeltaDog-whohas foundnewpurposeandanewhome.

AfterGraduation

We got our vets’ backs, after graduation and beyond. In addition to providing continued training support for their Delta Dog, we’re there to assist in their efforts to return to work, secure housing, and re-establish relationships. We also provide pet food and other essentials, as well financialassistance, ifneeded.

When missiles were fired over Iraq in the Gulf War, Joe was there, serving as an army infantry soldier. He was only 19.

The scale of violence Joe witnessed is hard to talk about. “At that age, to see what people are capable of doing to each other... I don’t even have words for it.”

Back home, Joe struggled with PTSD and needed help. “It's just falling apart and not knowing why you had these feelings of grief. It was like the death of a loved one every day. It became basically a sense of hopelessness.”

In an Oklahoma animal shelter, Muppet needed help, too. We rescued her and paired her with Joe. Muppet is trained to comfort Joe when something triggers his PTSD. “She’s able to sense it often. She’ll comes up and just puts her head on my lap. It just kind of snaps you back to the present moment.”

“It'sgoodtohaveheraround,we'rekindoflearning together. She'steachingmealot."

During his military career, patience wasn’t exactly a trait Joe focused on cultivating.

“When you get up to the rank I had in the military, if I say something to somebody, I don't have to say it a second time. If you're not moving, and I have to say it again, that's when the blood pressure starts going up...the program has taught me to try to dial a lot of that back. And, it's helped. It’s helped a lot.

The training team helps me understand that in order for us to make the connection, I have to have patience for her struggles, and she has to have the patience for my struggles. I think it's working out pretty well.”

8 DELTA TEAMS EMBARK ON THEIR JOURNEYS

The Operation Delta Dog family is excited to celebrate the hard work and dedication of eight Delta Teams as they graduate the program together, ready to navigate unknown roads ahead, side by side.

The journey begins with the courage to pick up the phone to make that first call. Then, committing fully to the process, working with their newfound companions throughout the immersive training period of a year or more. They emerge from their hard work and dedication with a lasting bond that transcends the service dog/guardian relationship--each making room in their hearts for the other, ready to face the future as an unstoppable team. It‘s been our privilege to support these men and women along their journey, and we salute their amazing accomplishment.

2023 PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

THENEWFELICIAROSEFOSTERHOMEFORDOGS

We honor our commitment to find a forever home for every dog we rescue as an integral part of our mission. As our organization grows rapidly, the number of veterans we serve and dogs we rescue has increased dramatically.

Through a generous grant from the Felicia Rose Grant Program of the Cummings Foundation, the Felica Rose Foster Home provides the ideal setting for recent rescues transitioning to a life in a home as a family member. Situated on just under three acres, surrounded by fields, woods and an orchard, they receive daily training, exercise, and enrichment while their aptitude as a service dog is assessed. Live-in staff provide around-the-clock care, and the pool and agility course helps them to thrive. Best of all, we can now rescue, care for and place more dogs in loving homes or on their journey as Delta Dogs for waiting veterans. As we expand our services across New Hampshire and Massachusetts and step up our rescue efforts, we’ll be in greater need of dog-loving foster volunteers! Could that be you?

BATTLEBUDDIESTOTHERESCUE

Program graduates, inspired by their own experience, often wish to give back and support their fellow veterans during their training process. The Peer Mentoring Program was created to meet this mutual need and foster an enduring network of friendship and fellowship. 85% of program graduates are now Veteran Peer Mentors.

Military culture is rooted in service and sacrifice. This can create obstacles to receiving assistance and reinforce feelings of isolation. Connecting with a fellow vet who shares the same challenges provides motivation and encouragement, increasing the likelihood of success.

In partnership with Hidden Battles, “Battle Buddies" receive training in Intentional Peer Support, which emphasizes learning about behavior patterns and developing awareness together, as partners. In addition to friendship and solidarity, mentors provide assistance in concrete ways. For example, it’s not uncommon when starting out for a veteran to experience stress on simple public outings - just to get out of the car and enter a store can be a major milestone. The accompaniment of a mentor is a game changer in these situations. With the support of a fellow vet, these seemingly insurmountable milestones are reached, one by one. One year later, that same struggling veteran can be seen confidently leading the way for their friend just starting out, service dog by their side. The transformation is visible and life-changing.

TOM BAIRD: COMMUNITY MVP FOR DOGS & VETS

“I've grown to love Operation Delta Dog---the staff and volunteers love what they do, and it shows.It'shardtoexplain,butwheneverI'mthere,itsomehowfeelslikehome.Theworkthey dowiththeveteransanddogsistrulymagic.”

Operation Delta Dog volunteer and Board Director Tom Baird was selected by the New England Patriots Foundation as a 2023 Myra Kraft Community MVP Award recipient! The foundation granted $10,000 to OpDD in honor of Tom’s outstanding commitment to veterans and the dogs who transform their lives.

Tom, a CAD Designer with the Aerospace & Defense Division of Analog Devices, dedicates much of his free time to volunteering. For Operation Delta Dog, he walks dogs, cleans kennels and does just about everything and anything else that needs to get done. During the pandemic, he began a monthly dog food drive for dogs in training. We're lucky enough to also count him among our Board team members.

"I started volunteering in 2019, delivering regular donations of pet food and other items, and was hooked from day one. Everything about the mission resonates with me. I love dogs, and am involved with Run For the Troops and other veteran-related causes, and also serve as Chairman of the Veterans Network at Analog Devices. I've grown to love Operation Delta Dog---the staff and volunteers love what they do, and it shows. It's hard to explain, but whenever I'm there, it somehow feels like home. The work they do with the veterans and dogs is truly magic.

This award is a great honor, and I'm grateful for the attention it will bring to the amazing work that Operation Delta Dog is doing rescuing dogs and training them as service companions for veterans, free of charge. I've always found the greatest reward is in helping others and the satisfaction of knowing how much that help meant to them.”

“I’m not sure if there is one word or one emotion to describe the feeling over this loss. I was devastated, confused, torn up, sad for Nicky, sad for his children … angry.”

Hidden Battles Foundation founder Scott Hyder is a disabled veteran who served 10 years in the Army as a combat engineer. In 2004, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant. During his military career, he was deployed to Kosovo during the Balkans conflict, as well as Kenya and Panama for peace keeping missions.

On June 10, 2012, after not hearing from his brother Nick for a few days, Scott drove to his house only to discover that he had taken his own life. He recalls the struggle he faced in the aftermath. “I’m not sure if there is one word or one emotion to describe the feeling over this loss. I was devastated, confused, torn up, sad for Nicky, sad for his children … angry.” Scott was emotionally falling apart and eventually reached out for help.

Scott’s therapy helped him to see that his brother struggled with depression and PTSD. Driven by his own transformative experiences, Scott has made it his mission to promote suicide prevention and awareness and create more opportunities veterans, police officers and firefighters to improve their mental health. He is also a graduate of our service dog program, sharing his life with his Delta Dog, Junie.

Hidden Battles facilitates therapeutic and recreational programs and events (and even their own radio program) across New Hampshire and Massachusetts for veterans and first responders. They partner with us in bringing service dogs to veterans, as well as hosting a monthly Heroes Meet Up, where veterans and first responders can discuss their mental health, PTSD and depression in a peer led environment. Hidden Battles has also been instrumental to the success and growth of our Veteran Peer Mentoring Program, providing specialized training in Intentional Peer Support.

We're grateful to count such a brave individual with so much dedication and passion for our shared mission as a member of our community.
