everyone and thank you for coming to see Mighty Goliath’s production of The Wizard of Oz. The Wizard of Oz is a story that has been around for almost 100 years and in that time, it has touched countless individuals. As influential as it has been, it has also been an honor to direct this group of individuals all with the goal of telling you all this story. I hope that you get as much enjoyment out of watching these actors as I did in directing them. They all have given their hearts to this production and have been working tirelessly to bring it to life. Something that ultimately comes from doing a story such as this, is how we make it unique to this group, especially since MGP has never done this in their longstanding history. We decided to bring a minimal set design, combine it with puppetry and traditional theatre elements so that you as the audience can focus on the story and the beautiful music that has withstood years of being heard. One of the most important aspects of MGP is the fact that parents have the opportunity to share the stage with their child(ren); many for the first time and for their child(ren)’s first theatrical performance. This has been a show of true collaboration through music, props, and the actors all bringing characterizations to even the smallest role in the show. I hope that you all take away from this show the message of belonging, being true to who you are, and that anyone can make a difference no matter who they are. Just like Dorothy
Our main purpose, and the reason we exist, is to support and fund the performing arts in our schools. This mission is deeply rooted in our history, dating back to 1959 when members of the Eastview Elementary School PTA staged a variety show to raise money for their children’s education. Their variety show was more than an event. It was a promise made to a community, a declaration that art matters and that children’s dreams deserve a stage.
Sixty-six years later, that same spirit lives on, with every performer on stage and every stagehand, prop builder, set painter, director, choreographer, lobby manager, and musician behind the scenes volunteering their time and talent to make it all possible.
What began as “Shoremen helping Shoremen” has grown into something even bigger. While Mighty Goliath Productions’ core group of volunteers continues to be Avon Lake residents and Avon Lake natives now living nearby, our reach has expanded over the years. This year, we’re proud to have participants from communities as far away as Amherst, Cleveland, Oberlin, Grafton, Berea, and Medina, all coming together to keep this incredible tradition alive.
You, as a member of our audience, are more than a spectator, you are an important part of this tradition. Over the years, Mighty Goliath Productions, together with our generous audiences, has proudly donated over $330,000 to support the performing arts in Avon Lake. Thank you for being a vital part of this effort and for helping us inspire and enrich the creative lives of our students.
While fundraising is the focus of our Board of Directors, as Producer, I’ve placed my focus on one of our secondary goals: welcoming new participants to MGP. There are 100 continued...
cast members this year, which makes it easy for me to do the math to tell you that 48% of the cast are new to MGP this year. Among those joining us for their first MGP production, some are taking an even bigger leap. This is their very first show ever.
Take a moment to browse the cast bios in the digital program and notice the young, fresh faces. MGP played a small part in the creative journeys of alumni like actresses Isabela Merced and Lili Reinhart, who discovered their love of performing in community theater. But we’re not just for those aiming for the spotlight, we’re also a home for people who discovered their love for theater in high school or college and want to reconnect with an activity that brings them joy and a sense of community.
Community theater holds a unique place. It’s more than just a stage; it’s a gathering place where people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels come together to create something together. It is a platform for local talent to shine, while fostering connections between neighbors, and telling stories that reflect and celebrate all of us. It’s not just about the performances, it’s about building relationships, sharing laughter, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
What a joy it has been for me to try to facilitate that for our cast this year.
We invite you to share in our spirit of joy. Set your cares aside for a while and join us as we retell a familiar story. Dorothy and Toto have been inviting us to dream for 125 years now! Together, let’s follow the Yellow Brick Road and remember that everything we need we already have inside us.
