A LIVE DRIVE-IN OPERA

FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR How do you make opera in COVID? How do you put on a live theater performance during a worldwide pandemic? How do you keep the performers and the audience safe while also keeping them engaged? These are the questions that came up when Kostis first contacted me about working together on La Tragédie de Carmen. He told me that there would be limited staging, no fight sequences, that the performers would need to remain at least six feet apart from one another at all times, and this was by no means to prevent us from creating a fully realized theatrical experience for the performers and the audience alike. What to do? At first, I thought we might travel down the road of The Fantasticks and have everything in the story pulled out of trunks with the performers playing a real game of "pretend." But the more time I spent with the piece and sat with the question, “How do we create an authentic experience of connection and creativity in a time when we feel so far from that truth?” it occurred to me that we cannot ignore our reality, we must embrace it.

Our reality was the audience would be in their cars, listening to the show on their radios, watching the action on big screens, and slightly more connected than they had been for the last nine months but still disconnected from the feeling of sitting next to a stranger in a dark theatre having a shared live experience. How were we going to reach the people and find a point of connection? All of this reminded me of the stories my father shared with my sister and mee about when he and his mother would tune in Saturday afternoons to the Metropolitan Opera’s radio broadcasts and then later that same evening tune in to episodes of The Lone Ranger and other radio serials. They would sing along with the tunes they knew and listen to the voices of people they might never have seen. They would feel connected to a story brought to life by word and music, and they would connect to the person in their room with whom they were listening. It became clear, we were doing a radio show.

Peter Brook’s La Tragédie de Carmen is an abridged and adapted version of George Bizet’s opera Carmen. Peter Brooke took the opera and synthesized it down to focus on the four main characters in the opera: Carmen, Don José, Escamillo, and Michaela, and the twisted web of love and betrayal that exists among them. He stripped the story down to the bare bones of the human experience, and we are left with a character study of four people, their passions, their sorrows, what makes them tick, and their human hearts. By taking away stage business and sets, we dive a level deeper and ask the performers to focus on the story: the libretto, the music, and their personal experiences that when mixed together result in an authentic performance. It is an exciting time in history to look this intimately at the human experience and expose both the performer, and the character’s, soul. This is the gift of the shared experience and connection. That connection so many of us have been lacking for the last nine months. By the light of day our performers will see you and share with you this story that many of you hold close to your hearts and some of you are hearing for the first time. It has been a true gift to spend the last week collaborating with this brave and talented group of artists on Carmen - A Live Drive-In Opera. synopsis Carmen, A Live Drive-In Opera, adapted from La tragédie de Carmen Taking a cue from our unique venue, director Sara E. Widzer sets the story in the 1940s, during the heyday of drive-ins and the golden age of movie musicals. Like the radio plays of the time, immerse yourself in a Carmen like you've never seen or heard before. So get comfortable, turn up the dial on your car radio and follow along for the fierce jealousies and intense passions that would rival the great film noir classics.

Micaëla, a young country girl, arrives in Seville looking for her childhood sweetheart, Don José. Before finding José she encounters a beggar woman who reads her palm. Micäela brings José a letter from his mother. The beggar woman reveals herself to be the gypsy woman, Carmen. As a way of staking her claim over José, she presents him with a flower and sings an passionate love song.

Micäela, jealous of Carmen and the spell she seems to have cast over José, slaps Carmen and a fight ensues.

José's superior, Zuniga, appears and breaks up the fight. Unable to control Carmen, he orders José tie her up and take her to prison. En route, Carmen promises José that if he lets her escape she will meet him at the inn of her friend Lillias Pastia. José unties her ropes and lets Carmen out of her cell, and before José can follow, she pushes him into the cell, locks the gate and throws away the key. Zuniga mocks José for his prior ill behavior, takes away the corporal’s rank and leaves him to carry out Carmen’s prison time.

A month passes and Carmen arrives at Lillas Pastia’s tavern where Zuniga has been waiting for her. Carmen promises to dance for him in the hopes of getting him drunk and robbing him blind. As Lillas Pastia and Carmen work Zuniga, a forlorn José can be heard calling for Carmen.

Pastia helps get rid of the drunk Zuniga, and Carmen welcomes José. They embrace and she begins to dance for him. During the dance, the bugles blow summoning José back to the barracks. Carmen is furious and taunts him; the situation becomes tense. Zuniga busts in, the two men fight and ultimately José kills the officer.

The body is quickly hidden as Escamillo, a famous bullfighter, enters. Buying drinks all around, he announces that he, too, is laying claim to Carmen. José, jealous, picks a fight with Escamillo. Carmen separates them and Escamillo withdraws, inviting all to his next bullfight. He warns José that the next time they meet, José may not be so lucky.

José, who has now killed for Carmen, sings of his love for her.

Carmen reads her tragic fate in the cards. Micaëla appears again searching for José; the two women seem to understand each other while they sing together. Carmen becomes Escamillo's mistress. José returns to persuade her to leave with him to start a new life. She refuses, knowing she is putting her life in jeopardy.

Someone is fatally wounded in the bullring. Carmen still refuses José's offer, but she goes with him knowing what the cards have foretold.

artists Kostis protopapas conductor Kostis Protopapas was named General Director of Opera Santa Barbara in December 2017, after two-and-a-half seasons as Artistic Director. During his time as Artistic Director and principal conductor, Kostis brought a unified vision to OSB’s musical and production values, strengthening the orchestra and chorus, engaging some of the country’s most promising young directors and singers, building a high-performing production team, and increasing focus on contemporary American opera. The result was productions of both familiar and new repertoire that are counted among the finest in the company’s history. As General Director, Kostis grew the company’s staff from three to seven, assembling an enthusiastic group of overachievers sharing an appetite for innovation and the desire to strengthen the company’s bond with the community. During 2018-19, the company’s 25th anniversary season, Kostis oversaw the sold-out Santa Barbara premiere of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin and a production of The Crucible that the Santa Barbara Independent hailed as “one of the season’s most exciting performances of any kind in Santa Barbara”; a 25th anniversary gala concert; and the company’s first-ever student matinee performance as well as its first ever Youth camp. Under Kostis’ leadership Opera Santa Barbara saw the creation of the Santa Barbara Youth Opera, a program providing educational and performance opportunities for school-age children; the expansion of the company’s Chrisman Studio program to a season-long residency for emerging artists; an impressive growth in the company’s community engagement and educational activities throughout the Central Coast; and the runaway success of Operacurious, a new program that brings Young Professionals in Santa Barbara in contact with opera and its artists. 2016 saw the end of Kostis' 15-year association with Tulsa Opera, during which he conducted 30 productions of a diverse repertoire extending from popular classics to contemporary American works. About his 2011 Barber of Seville performances, Alex Ross of The New Yorker wrote, “Most impressive was the fluid idiomatic playing of the orchestra… In any city, it’s rare to find a conductor that sets the right tempo so consistently that you stop noticing he's there.”Kostis has been an Assistant Conductor for the Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera and Santa Fe Opera. At the Lyric Opera of Chicago, he also served as Assistant Chorus Master under Donald Palumbo for two seasons. Born in Athens, Greece, Kostis Protopapas studied Archaeology and History of Art at the University of Athens before coming to the United States in 1993, on an Onassis Foundation scholarship, to study piano at The Boston Conservatory and conducting at Boston University. He became an American citizen in 2011. He loves living in Santa Barbara, and enjoys downtown restaurants, the Funk Zone’s tasting rooms, and sailing on the Santa Barbara Channel.

sara e. widzer stage director Stage Director Sara E. Widzer continues to produce exceptional operatic and theatre works at companies across the United States and abroad. Currently serving on faculty at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Los Angeles, her guest engagements for the 2020-21 season include as director for Opera Santa Barbara’s Concert in the Car production of La Tragedié de Carmen and a directorial debut at Opera Orlando with a new production of Carmen. Ms. Widzer’s 2019-20 season included as director for the world premiere of the new opera, JUANA, based on the novel Sor Juana’s Second Dream by Alicia Gaspar de Alba with music by Carla Lucero, for Opera UCLA. Also, the US premiere of La Morte d’Orfeo in her directorial debut at Los Angeles Opera. Among her engagements cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic were Assistant Director to Sir David McVicar at Los Angeles Opera for the mainstage production of Pelléas et Mélisande and as director at Music Academy of the West for a new production of Philip Glass’ Les Enfants Terribles. On the opera stage, she has worked with members of the Glimmerglass Festival Young Artist Program, the Los Angeles Opera Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program, the WNO Cafritz Young Artist Program, and has also served as guest coach and lecturer at El Camino College, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara, Cal State University Long Beach, and Florida State University. Ms. Widzer continues to guest teach acting at studios throughout the Los Angeles area, and also maintains a roster of speaking and singing actors for whom she coaches acting and performance technique. She received her MM in Opera Directing from Florida State University, her BA in theatre from Connecticut College and has an Artist’s Diploma in Classical Acting/Shakespeare from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in Shakespeare. Ms. Widzer makes her home in Los Angeles.

Audrey Babcock CARMEN Award-winning mezzo-soprano Audrey Babcock has been seen recently with Santa Barbara Opera as Elizabeth Proctor in The Crucible and as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly. Her commanding, powerful Carmen has been seen throughout the United States as well as on the International stage with such companies as the Festival Lyrique-en-Mer, Florentine Opera, Nashville Opera, Florida Grand Opera, New York City Opera, San Antonio Opera, Knoxville Opera, Opera Delaware, Toledo Opera, Anchorage Opera, Dayton Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Mill City Summer Opera, and Utah Festival Opera. Ms. Babcock has premiered several new operas including Tobias Picker’s Thérèse Raquin (NY Premiere - Dicapo Opera), With Blood, With Ink (World Premiere - Fort Worth Opera), La Reina (American Lyric Theater, NY & Prototype Festival), The Poe Project (American Lyric Theater), and appeared as Mother in Winter’s Tale with Beth Morrison’s Prototype Festival in NYC in 2015. Recent engagements include the Mother in Hänsel und Gretel and Baba/Flora in The Medium with Victory Hall Opera, Carmen with the Bar Harbour Music Festival, and her Seattle Opera debut as Baroness Nica in Yardbird.

Harold meers Don José Since his professional debut with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Harold Meers has established himself as one of the outstanding American tenors performing internationally today. He has garnered critical and popular praise for performances at the most important venues in North America including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Minnesota Opera, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Boston Lyric Opera, Glimmerglass Opera, Opera Omaha, Nashville Opera, New Orleans Opera, Baltimore Opera, Cleveland Opera, and Virginia Opera. Internationally he has appeared at Opera North (UK), Hessisches Theater Wiesbaden, Theater Freiburg, the National Theater Brno Czech Republic and at the historic Teatro Degollado with the Filharmonica de Jaslico in Guadalajara, Mexico. No stranger to Santa Barbara audiences, he has performed Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly, Des Grieux in Massenet’s Manon, Don Jose in Carmen, Il Duca in Rigoletto and Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with Opera Santa Barbara in with the Santa Barbara Symphony as tenor soloist for Verdi’s Requiem. Mr. Meers is also the General and Artistic Director of Charleston Opera Theater in Charleston, SC.

Alexander elliott escamillo Baritone Alexander Birch Elliott continues to garner praise for his “heated intensity and beguiling timbre of mahogany.” (New York Times) Alexander made major debuts at both The Metropolitan Opera and Houston Grand Opera singing the role of Zurga in Les Pêcheurs de Perles. In the 2019-2020 season he debuted at Carnegie Hall with the American Symphony Orchestra for Elgar’s The Kingdom, as well as with New York’s PROTOTYPE Festival as Lucifer in Rev 23, directed by James Darrah and conducted by Daniela Candillari. He returned to Tulsa Opera for performances of Carmen, as well as to the Pittsburgh Symphony for Fidelio. Alexander made two significant festival debuts in the summer of 2018 - with the Ravinia Festival under the baton of Marin Alsop as a Street Singer in Bernstein’s Mass, followed by performances of Maximilian, the Sea Captain, and the Grand Inquisitor in Candide at the Tanglewood Festival. Recent operatic appearances include Sonora in La fanciulla del West in his debut with New York City Opera; Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera Santa Barbara; Anthony in Sweeney Todd and the title role of Eugene Onegin with Portland Opera; and as Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte with Opera Omaha.

jennifer lindsay micaëla Lyric soprano Jennifer Lindsay has been widely praised for her gorgeous tone and musical intelligence. As Mimì in La Bohème with Opera Connecticut, she was lauded for her “plummy voice” by the Connecticut Town Times, and VOICE Magazine called her a “standout singer” for her portrayal of the pivotal character Mary Warren in Robert Ward’s The Crucible, a role she performed as a Chrisman Studio Artist with Opera Santa Barbara. Last season, Ms Lindsay joined the Metropolitan Opera as a member of the ensemble in a new and wildly popular production of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, which was recently nominated for two Grammy awards. Equally at home in the contemporary music scene, Ms Lindsay appeared with the LA Philharmonic in conjunction with Beth Morrison Projects to perform excerpts from John Adams’ I Was Looking At The Ceiling And Then I Saw The Sky, conducted by the composer. She debuted the role of Lucha in the world premiere of HOPSCOTCH with The Industry, directed by Pulitzer Prizenominee Yuval Sharon, and performed the role of Tasha in excerpts from Dylan Mattingly’s modern opera Stranger Love at the biannual FIRST TAKE contemporary music festival co-hosted by The Industry and wildUp, Christopher Roundtree’s acclaimed new music ensemble. Ms Lindsay has also been a featured soloist with the San Diego Symphony, the Pacific Symphony, and the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra. She currently resides in Los Angeles.

Ron Morehouse lilias pastia Ron Morehouse has been a working stage and film actor for over 20 years. Los Angeles Theatre: 4 seasons at A Noise Within, 5 years as a company member at Theatre of Note, Open Fist Theatre Company. 2 seasons at SciFest LA. Ron is a familiar face to TV audiences having done 50 National commercials and guest starring on shows like NCIS, Justified, among others. As a filmmaker Ron formed Bell-House Productions, with his producing partner Emily Bell, when their first movie Future Boyfriend premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. They went on to create the election series Hill Yes (Amazon Prime), and the zombie rom-com Deep Dish Apocyalpse. He holds a BFA from USC.

william grundler zuniga Los Angeles-based tenor, conductor, and composer, William Grundler, is thrilled to perform again with Opera Santa Barbara. William’s recent roles include L’arithmétique in Pacific Opera Project’s L'enfant et les sortilèges, the Governor and Vanderdendur in Angels Vocal Art’s Candide, and Spoletta in Sacramento Opera’s Tosca. Last autumn William made his Carnegie Hall debut performing as Il Duca and Nemorino in scenes from Rigoletto and L’elisir d’amore, respectively. William has performed as a soloist with the Santa Clarita Master Chorale and has sung choral works with Opera Santa Barbara, the LA Phil, the LA Master Chorale, and Long Beach Opera. William’s high school vocal students have been awarded at the Jerry Herman awards, attended prestigious programs at universities such as Westminster, Emerson and Brown, and gone on to perform professionally. Following three years as Music Director at Grace Lutheran Church in Ventura, William now serves as Choir Director of Canoga Park Lutheran Church and Assistant Choir Director at St. Michael Antiochian Orthodox Church in Van Nuys.

kourtni dale-noll mitchiner production stage manager KOURTNI DALE-NOLL MITCHINER, a Texas native, received her Bachelors in Music from Baylor University and her Masters in Music Performance from Loyola University, New Orleans. She has previously sung with the Plano Civic Chorus, the Cornish American Song Institute, New Orleans Opera Association, New Fangled Opera, the Mediterranean Opera Studio, Santa Barbara Choral Society, Santa Barbara Symphony, and Opera Santa Barbara. She has managed the social media profiles for Friday Artists Management, INC and has helped coordinate the Cornish-American Song Institute's summer program. In early 2014, she made the switch to stage management and loves it! She has had the honor of stage managing with Echo Theater Company, California Opera Association, Ojai Youth Opera, the Santa Barbara Choral Society, the Santa Barbara Symphony, Pacific Opera Project, Opera San JosĂŠ, Arizona Opera, and Opera Santa Barbara.

Timothy Accurso Principal Pianist Tim joined the Opera Santa Barbara team in September 2018. He has been on music staff with Palm Beach Opera, Opera Saratoga, and the Seagle Music Colony. Originally from Glen Lyon, Pennsylvania, he completed his undergraduate studies at Susquehanna University in vocal and piano performance. To further his studies in opera, Tim received a Masters of Music in vocal coaching and accompanying from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign, where he studied with Dr. Julie Jordan Gunn. Following his studies, Tim became a resident artist with Utah Opera for two seasons. This summer he will join the music staff at Opera Las Vegas for their production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Tim spends his time coaching the Chrisman Studio artists, engaging in the education initiatives of Opera Santa Barbara, playing mainstage rehearsals, and performing throughout the community in recitals and company events.

T. Theresa scarano props master Teresa’s multi-faceted career of 25 years spans theatre and dance in varying capacities including technical direction, prop design, and set design and construction.

Theresa has been Stage Manager for California Ballet, Kairos Dancers, and Dancing Images Dance Company. She served as both Scenery Warehouse Manager and Prop Master at San Bernardino Civic Light Opera and was Rental Manager of Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera (later The Set Company), where she was Director of Operations. Theresa wrote and directed adolescents in various performances, including those for Juvenile Court Judges in Riverside County. Her work includes prop design and set dressing for Theatre 150, Cabrillo Music Theatre, Ensemble Theatre Company, CLO of South Bay Cities, the Welk Resort, Music Academy of the West, Universal Studios, Phoenix Rising Productions, Kingsmen Shakespeare Company and Rubicon Theatre Company where she is Resident Prop Designer.
