IMPACT REPORT 2022-2023

2022-2023

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEO

Do you remember the feeling you had when you heard a song for the first time and were swept away? Maybe it made you remember something you had forgotten. Maybe the melody gave you chills as you listened.

That pivotal moment of connection moves us in the arts and we create those moments at Classical Music Institute.

CMI has had a transformative year serving the Bexar County community. We expanded our reach through creative collaborations with OPERA San Antonio and Ballet San Antonio, engaged with more young artists than ever through our summer education programs, and launched the inaugural 210 Festival. We met over 7000 people at our performances at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and our community events around San Antonio We learned with students in EISD, SAISD, and college campuses through workshops and masterclasses. We had incredible musicians perform who represented 10 different countries around the globe. And we're just getting started

As we look to the future, CMI is striving to reach new heights by connecting music with community. That is only possible through the support of our dedicated donors and advocates As we reflect on the impact we have had, I hope that you consider the future we are building and join us on our journey.

Performance. Education. Collaboration. Community.

COLLABORATION

CMI collaborated with both OPERA San Antonio (OSA) and Ballet San Antonio (BSA) for the first time to create transformative experiences for all who attended performances. Serving as the orchestra for BSA’s The Nutcracker, and OSA’s Pagliacci, Romeo and Juliet and Maria de Buenos Aires, CMI created a beautiful atmosphere for performers and audience members alike. Between 10,000 and 15,000 people attended these performances and were swept away by the CMI Orchestra's contributions to these productions.

In addition to serving at performances, CMI further partnered with OSA to create outreach opportunities and educational experiences. In June of 2023, OSA and CMI partnered to create 8 outreach performances, and developed opportunities for collegiate artists to engage with both organizations through apprenticeships and a summer voice program.

CMI accompanied OSA on its tour of San Antonio libraries, providing accompaniment for OSA’s performers. These 8 events were free to the public and performed at Great Northwest library, El Progreso Memorial Library, Thousand Oaks Library, Semmes Library, Tobin Library at Oakwell, and Cortez Library, as well as San Agustin Cathedral (Laredo, TX) and The Radius Center.

Additionally, CMI and OSA created the inaugural Summer Voice Program. In this program, three tracks were developed to serve aspiring musicians. The Teaching-Artist Fellowship was created to bring early-career voice teachers to the Bexar County community to work with youth participants and senior faculty to hone their pedagogical skills. The Apprentice Artist program provided coaching and performance opportunities for early-career singers ready to take the stage. Finally, the Collegiate Voice Program served as a safe space for young singers to explore their art form and broaden their network of connections. The CMI-OSA Summer Program was able to serve 21 Vocal Collegiate Artists, 4 Apprentice Artists and 4 Vocal Teaching Artist Fellows.
