2024/25 Annual Donor Report

Last year, OPERA San Antonio proudly celebrated our 10th anniversary a remarkable milestone that reflects not just our growth as an organization, but the power of a community that believes in the transformative magic of opera. From our earliest performances to our boldest productions today, everything we have achieved has been made possible by your incredible support Our 2024/25 Season, “Exploring New Horizons,” was a true celebration of all that opera can be timeless, boundary-breaking, and deeply human. We were honored to present our first-ever Spanish-language mainstage production, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna along with Puccini’s masterpiece, Madama Butterfly These works brought over 5,000 audience members and more than 2,000 students and educators many of whom were experiencing live opera for the very first time.
But our reach extended far beyond the theater Thanks to your support, our education and community programs served more than 32,225 people, impacting 173 schools across all 10 city districts. Through OPERA in Schools, multilingual lectures, artist talkbacks, and 45 free community events, we brought opera directly into classrooms, neighborhoods, and hearts
Because of your generosity, we are not only sustaining this work we are growing it You have helped us shape a company that is both artistically ambitious and communitydriven, and we are more energized than ever about what lies ahead.
As we look to our next decade, we invite you to continue this journey with us and to consider making a gift that ensures opera continues to thrive in our city.
With heartfelt gratitude,

E. Loren Meeker
Executive Director of OPERA San Antonio
(Position Underwritten by The Tobin Endowment)

In October of 2024, OPERA San Antonio opened its 10 Anniversary Season with Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, the world’s first mariachi opera, honoring San Antonio’s vibrant cultural heritage in collaboration with Campanas de America This production marked OSA’s debut of both a Spanish-language and a contemporary work in the H-E-B Hall of The Tobin Center. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we were thrilled to offer free access to the final dress rehearsal and two performances to 1,746 students, teachers, and veterans. OSA is deeply committed to making opera accessible to all, and it’s the unwavering support of our patrons and donors that makes these transformative experiences possible.

To complement the performances, OSA created a mercado in the lobby celebrating Mexican-American culture and treated audiences to post-show performances by local high school mariachi groups from Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, Lanier High School, and Holmes High School At the final dress rehearsal, students were invited to a Q&A before the show, and at the end of the night, everyone was treated to paletas to help celebrate the evening.
“The students were very emotional, which means that the performance engaged them in such a way that they connected with the cast and the message. It was a beautiful sight to see. ”
“Thank you so much for this experience. I have always wanted to go to an opera and opened an interest I never knew I had for it. Also to see something that incorporates my heritage was an amazing thing to watch.
Thank you ”
NORA, U.S. MARINE CORPS (VETERAN 1999 - 2013)

The season continued with Puccini’s Madama Butterfly. This richly emotional and visually compelling production explored cross cultural contrasts and the power of love and loss in one of opera ’ s most beloved works. Staged in our first ever collaboration with Austin Opera and The Orchestra San Antonio, it featured a cast led by Raquel González as Cio Cio San, Joseph Dennis as Lt Pinkerton, with music

“I overheard one of my students, a teen boy, say to his friends as we were leaving, " guys, I seriously got teared up like three times during the show..."
JACQUELYN FAGAN, TEACHER GREAT HEARTS MONTE VISTA
“Thank you for tonight, it was a blessing!!”
EMI J, STUDENT TAFT HIGH SCHOOL

“I would love to go to another one, seeing a story play was so wonderful and such a passionate way of telling a story to the audience I would love to see another one day.”
LOREN G, STUDENT JOHN MARSHALL HIGH SCHOOL

OPERA San Antonio received two prestigious honors last fall, proclamations from the City of San Antonio and from Bexar County celebrating our 10th Anniversary Season. We had a wonderful time sharing our love for opera and our commitment to the community of San Antonio with Mayor Nirenberg and City Council Members on October 3rd and with Judge Sakai and the County Commissioners on October 8th.

Last season, OSA’s Cocktails & Conversation series forged meaningful new partnerships with local venues A festive event at Mi Tierra highlighted Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, while a second gathering at the Japanese Tea Garden set the tone for Madama Butterfly Together, these events broadened OSA’s reach and built lasting community ties.
On November 15, 2024, OPERA San Antonio and The Orchestra San Antonio presented Voices of Beauty, a concert in a heartfelt tribute to the rich cultural history of the West Side community The concert featured baritone Efraín Solís, soprano Elizabeth Sutphen, and pianist Mario Marra, who performed along with musicians from The Orchestra San Antonio The hour-long performance was a guided exploration of the ties between operatic arias, Spanish folk song favorites, and major classical works set against the stunning backdrop of Little Flower Basilica in celebration of community and tradition

All proceeds from this benefit concert were offered in support of the Little Flower Basilica’s efforts to repair its historic bells

During the 2024/25 Season, OSA visited 50 venues impacting 70 schools, 35 of which were classified as Title 1, through our OPERA in Schools program Schools visited included charter, homeschool, private, and public schools spread across 15 school districts in San Antonio and the s rro nding areas A total of 55 free performances ere offered across all 10 city districts in San ue to high demand for the program and he BraunTex Theatre, Carver Cultural Leading up to our production of Cruzar, e OPERA Meets Mariachi at The Tobin. s de America who performed a unique Over a total of 7 Student Matinee schools, impacting 2,966 attendees.

Across performances of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna and Madama Butterfly, including open final dress rehearsals, our 2024/25 Behind the Scenes program warmly welcomed our military community and 59 schools from across Bexar County and beyond, offering a total of 3,146 sponsored seats to students, teachers, and veterans. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, we were able to donate a combined total of 887 free tickets at a value of over $50,000. Our partnership with the VetTix, Tobin Heroes, and Tobin Teachers programs allowed many to experience opera for the very first time.
Through this program, students also received access to discounted $20 rush tickets and other enrichment opportunities such as Q&A sessions, photo opportunities with cast members, backstage tours, red-carpet interviews, and access to interactive to Study Guides tailored to deepen classroom learning

Throughout the 2024/25 Season, OSA participated in a record-breaking 45 free, community-centric events impacting 9,186 people. Special events were offered at locations across San Antonio and beyond, in partnership with both established and numerous new community partners. Highlights include: Stars and Stripes Salute in collaboration with the Alamo Plaza; Ford Holiday River Parade; Spanish-Language Opera Workshops in partnership with Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico - San Antonio (UNAM); caroling in multiple venues through Holiday Pop-Ups; a Holiday Concert for Haven for Hope; a featured performance at Tech Port Fiesta de los Niños; Explore Opera! at the McNay and Uvalde Grand Opera House, tour of family program Explore Opera for Kids! in partnership with the San Antonio Public Library; Hearts in Harmony concerts in collaboration with The Orchestra San Antonio, the South Texas Tour to Uvalde, Cotulla, Laredo, and Corpus Christi, and more. Each event brought new opportunities to connect, collaborate, and extend the reach of our programs

On a day commonly referred to as “Giving Tuesday”, OSA artists hit the road to offer Holiday Pop-Ups, a program offering holiday-themed performances across the city. Rather than solicit donations on this international day of giving, we choose to give back to our community by spreading holiday cheer through traditional carols sprinkled with opera classics.

OSA cares deeply about our veterans. During the 2024/25 Season, we offered concerts at the East and West locations of Blue Skies of Texas Air Force Retirement Village of San Antonio We also offered 600 sponsored tickets to our production of Cruzar la Cara de la Luna at The Tobin Center To achieve this, we partnered with the Vet Tix and Tobin
