我謹代表香港歌劇院,歡迎各位蒞臨欣賞 《歌劇薈萃》。

香港歌劇院致力籌辦高質素歌劇製作, 二十年來積極培植本地的歌劇文化。 除了 製作歌劇之外,香港歌劇院亦投放大量資 源培育不同社群對歌劇藝術與優秀合唱音 樂的興趣。 2004 年及 2008 年成立香港歌 劇院合唱團及香港歌劇院兒童合唱團,成 功為本地合唱界注入新的動力。而香港歌 劇院樂團的成立,亦標誌著本地歌劇發展 一個里程碑。為答謝歌劇愛好者和贊助者 的信任及支持,我們將繼續籌辦歌劇節目 和活動,把歌劇藝術進一步推廣至普羅大 眾。

我們的藝術總監兼世界著名男高音莫華倫 將聯同世界著名女高音王冰冰、阮妙芬 及國內著名男中音孫礫,與十位香港優 秀的歌劇演唱家(包括女高音 : 馮曉楓、

鄺勵齡、葉葆菁及張 瀞 丹 ; 女中音 : 連皓

忻 ; 男高音 : 陳晨、黃加恩及譚天樂 ; 男中

音 : 林俊和男低中音 : 黃日珩 )以及十六位

「賽馬會香港歌劇院青年演唱家發展及教 育計劃」的年輕歌唱家共同演唱一系列著 名的詠歎調和合唱。香港歌劇院合唱團及 香港歌劇院兒童合唱團亦一同參與演出。 我們有幸邀請到世界著名指揮家奧利維亞 里.蒙羅帶領香港歌劇院樂團為音樂會伴 奏。

On behalf of Opera Hong Kong, I would like to welcome you to this Opera Gala in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Opera Hong Kong.

With the aim of promoting opera and broadening its popular appeal, Opera Hong Kong has worked tirelessly over the years to bring quality opera productions to Hong Kong. Opera Hong Kong is committed to promoting both opera and high-quality choral music for all walks of life, especially the younger generation. Opera Hong Kong Chorus and Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus were established in 2004 and 2008 respectively, and are becoming recognised contributors to the local choral scene. The establishment of Opera Hong Kong Orchestra has also marked a major milestone in the development of operatic art in Hong Kong. With the support of sponsors and opera lovers, we will continue to bring opera programmes and activities with a view to widen our audience base.

Tonight, our Artistic Director Warren Mok, a world-renowned tenor; Bing Bing Wang and Nancy Yuen, world-renowned sopranos; Sun Li, a renowned baritone from the Mainland; 10 outstanding opera singers from Hong Kong (sopranos: Etta Fung, Louise Kwong, Yuki Ip and Dani Zhang; mezzosoprano: Carol Lin; tenors: Chen Chen, Samuel Huang and Alex Tam; baritone: Albert Lim; and bass-baritone: Apollo Wong); and 16 young artists who graduated from the Jockey Club Opera Hong Kong Young Artist Development and Education Programme will sing an array of well-known arias and ensembles. We also proudly present the singing performances by Opera Hong Kong Chorus and Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus at this Opera Gala. Last but not least, we are honoured to have world-famous conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe to conduct the Opera Hong Kong Orchestra. Opera Hong Kong would like to sincerely thank all the sponsors who made this Opera Gala possible. 承接慶祝香港歌劇院成立 20 週年,歡迎各 位蒞臨欣賞香港歌劇院聯同香港歌劇院樂 團、香港歌劇院合唱團以及香港歌劇院兒 童合唱團誠意獻上《歌劇薈萃》的演出。

香港歌劇院於過去 20 年來,一直致力與不 同的本地及國際級專業製作和演出團隊協 力製作多元化並高質素的歌劇作品,獻演 共五十部製作,當中包括三十六部享負盛 名的經典歌劇劇目,如:《茶花女》、《杜 蘭朵》、《卡門》、《費加羅的婚禮》、《羅 密歐與茱麗葉》、《阿伊達》、《維特》、 《卡洛王子》、《魔笛》、《曼儂》、《波希米 亞生涯》、《詩人李白》、《中山.逸仙 》、 《趙氏孤兒》、《荷夫曼的故事》、《漂泊的 荷蘭人》、《浮士德》、《莎樂美》、《微笑 之國》、《托斯卡》、《奧賽羅》、《塞維爾理 髮師》、《唐.喬望尼》、《弄臣》及《遊唱 詩人》;十四部半舞台式歌劇,包括:《女人

Following the celebration of the 20th anniversary of Opera Hong Kong, welcome to Opera Gala – a Gala sincerely presented by Opera Hong Kong, Opera Hong Kong Orchestra, Opera Hong Kong Chorus and Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus.

Over the past 20 years, Opera Hong Kong has been presenting a wide range of high-quality opera productions in collaboration with a diverse range of local and international professional production and casting teams. We have staged 50 successful productions including 36 prestigious full-scale classical opera productions such as La Traviata , Turandot , Carmen , The Marriage of Figaro , Roméo et Juliette , Aïda , Don Carlo , The Magic Flute , Manon , La bohème , Poet Li Bai , Dr Sun Yat-sen, The Chinese Orphan, The Tales of Hoffmann, The Flying Dutchman , Faust , Salome , The Land of Smiles , Tosca , Werther , Otello , The Barber of Seville , Don Giovanni , Rigoletto and Il Trovatore, 14 semi-staged opera productions including Così fan tutte , Madama Butterfly , Suor Angelica & Gianni Schicchi, The Magic Flute, The Magic Flute in Fuzhou, Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci , The Marriage of Figaro , I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Don Pasquale and Le docteur Miracle, etc. Dr Sun Yat-sen is even the original work of Opera Hong Kong. And 18 concerts and 10 fundraising concerts. Opera Hong Kong also organizes various educational and outreach activities to actively nurture the new generation of outstanding youth in Hong Kong, sparing no effort to promote the development of opera arts in Hong Kong. There were 245 school tours, over 140 Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus performances and other outreach programmes.

We will continue to explore opportunities to discover and produce various opera works and original opera works of diversified genres and forms; and to expand the opportunities for different types of talent training and development programmes for inspiring young talents and build an efficient, effective and sustainable vocal and artistic team to fulfill Opera Hong Kong's mission and vision, in order to enable Opera Hong Kong to grow continuously and move towards the next 20 years and beyond.

We have included and will present to you more than 20 opera excerpts from those main prestigious full-scale classical opera productions. It is our great pleasure to have world-renowned conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe, who features a group of well-renowned opera singers and Opera Hong Kong’s young artists who mostly were nurtured under the Jockey Club Opera Hong Kong Young Artist Development and Education Programme launched by Opera Hong Kong, performing at this gala.

Founded in 2003 Opera Hong Kong (OHK) is Hong Kong’s first professional opera company. Over the years, the company has gone from strength to strength under the artistic direction of Warren Mok, the internationally acclaimed Hong Kong tenor. OHK has elevated opera in Asia’s world city, with many world-class productions covering all major works in the operatic canon and has collaborated with opera houses and festivals including Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Taormina Opera Festival, Theater Erfurt, Opéra de Nice, National Centre for the Performing Arts and Shanghai Opera House.

In 2019, OHK was selected by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council as one of the three recipients of the coveted “Eminent Arts Group Scheme”. The Scheme’s consecutive 5-year funding has become a boost to further the company’s development.

OHK is committed to promoting the city’s brightest, young opera singers. In 2015, OHK launched the Jockey Club Opera Hong Kong Young Artist Development and Education Programme (the Programme), a three-year opera training programme designed to nurture ten young local artists. The success of the Programme led to its renewal by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust for another three years from 2019 to 2022, providing intensive training to 12 local artists. The Programme has been completed successfully in March 2022.

OHK also places a strong emphasis on its education and community activities. Opera school tours, summer schools and master classes are held regularly to reach young audiences. The music centre in Wanchai provides a wide range of courses for early age children to adult in addition to Children Chorus classes. The OHK Chorus and the OHK Children Chorus were established in 2004 and 2008 respectively and are becoming recognised contributors on the local choral scene.

The recent development of the Greater Bay Area has created an environment for OHK to initiate more collaborations and bring the art of opera to a wider audience.

香港歌劇院成立於 2003 年,是本地首個專業歌劇藝團。在世界知名的香港男高音莫華倫帶領 下,歌劇藝術在這個亞洲大都會得以發揚光大。歌劇院多年來致力製作世界級的歌劇節目, 劇目已涵蓋所有主要歌劇作品,曾合作過的歌劇院及音樂節包括羅馬歌劇院、意大利陶爾米 納歌劇藝術節、德國艾褔特劇院、法國尼斯歌劇院、中國國家大劇院及上海歌劇院。

2019 年,香港歌劇院榮獲香港藝術發展局甄選為「優秀藝團計劃」中三個受資助藝團之一, 以表揚歌劇院多年在藝術推廣上的努力。這項持續五年的資助讓香港歌劇院有更大的發展。 香港歌劇院積極培養本地優秀年青的歌唱家。劇院於 2015 年推出為期三年的「賽馬會香港歌 劇院青年演唱家發展及教育計劃」非常成功,得到各界認同。香港賽馬會慈善信託基金遂繼 續全力贊助,推出新一輪由 2019 年至 2022 年的三年培訓計劃,向十二位本地青年演唱家提 供密集訓練。計劃經已在 2022 年 3 月完滿結束。

香港歌劇院亦定期為年青一代舉辦各項教育及外展活動,包括學校歌劇巡演、夏令營及大師 班。灣仔音樂中心除籌辦兒童合唱團的恆常班外,更提供由幼兒至成人不同類型的課程,範 圍廣闊。香港歌劇院於 2004 年及 2008 年成立香港歌劇院合唱團及香港歌劇院兒童合唱團, 為本地合唱界注入新的動力。

近年大灣區發展亦營造了發展藝術的環境,香港歌劇院將把握機遇與內地合作,向區內推廣 歌劇藝術。

The Magic Flute by

Mozart’s The Magic Flute (or Die Zauberflöte) is a singspiel — an opera that includes both music and dialogue — from 1791 and was first performed just two months before the composer’s premature death. Its magical, fantastical fairy-tale story shows considerable influence from Mozart’s interest in Freemasonry. Hugely successful in its day, the opera has remained one of Mozart’s most popular works down to the present.

莫扎特於 1791 年創作的《魔笛》是一部歌唱劇(有音樂和對白的歌劇),在作曲家英年早逝前兩個月 首演。此神奇、夢幻的童話故事突顯出莫扎特對共濟會的深厚興趣。這齣歌劇於其時大獲成功,至今仍 為莫扎特眾多極受欣賞名劇中的一齣戲寶。

The overtures to Mozart’s operas stand-alone as some of the most engaging examples of his music and that of The Magic Flute is no exception, hinting at the excitement, drama and lyricism. Three is an important number in Freemasonry and this is reflected in the emphasis on the number three in the overture, for example, the opening three chords.

“This image is enchantingly lovely" sings Tamino in the opera’s first act. The Three Ladies present him with an image of the Princess Pamina, daughter of the Queen of the Night, and he falls instantly in love with her.

One of the most famous of all opera arias for coloratura soprano, “Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen” (“Hell’s vengeance boils in my heart”) or “Queen of the Night aria” from Act II depicts a fit of vengeful rage in which the Queen of the Night gives a knife to her daughter Pamina and exhorts her to assassinate her rival Sarastro ... if she doesn’t, the Queen will disown her.

An aria for baritone in which the bird- catcher Papageno introduces himself at the start of the opera. He’s very good at catching birds, he says, but what he really wants is a net to catch girls instead.

The Marriage of Figaro by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart 莫扎特《費加羅的婚禮》

Le nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro), Mozart’s comedic triumph, debuted in 1786, just two years after the hit play by Pierre de Beaumarchais on which Lorenzo Da Ponte based his libretto. The marriage in question is to be between Figaro and Susanna, two servants in Count Almaviva’s household. The Count, however, has tired of his wife Rosina ( whom he swept off her feet in Beaumarchais’s previous play The Barber of Seville) and now has his eye on Susanna. Courage and trickery in equal parts save a total of four different relationships.

“You ladies who know of love,” sings the young page Cherubino. Both perky and lilting, this is one of opera’s best-known arias for mezzo-soprano, for Cherubino is also one of opera’s best-known “pants part” in which a woman sings or plays a man or, here, a boy. Cherubino is asking Susanna and the Countess Rosina for advice in ways of the heart.

Act II of the opera opens with the Countess lying in bed lamenting her husband’s infidelities. The entire aria consists of just four lines: “O Love, give me some remedy / For my sorrow, for my sighs! / Either give me back my darling / Or at least let me die.” with all the meaning — sadness, hope, resignation, yearning expressed in the music.

The opera comes to a head when the Count realises that the chambermaid he thought he was wooing in the garden is none other than his wife in disguise. Asking her forgiveness, the group of nobles and commoners alike resolve to let bygones be bygones, and, in a joyous finale, to allow happiness and true love to reign from this point on.

正當伯爵悟到他以為他在花園裡追求的女僕實為他喬裝打扮的妻子時, 全劇達至高潮。一眾貴族和平民決意讓過去成過去,請求她的原諒, 並讓他倆從歡樂的終場一直永享幸福與真愛。

Don Pasquale by Gaetano Donizetti 唐尼釆蒂《唐.帕斯夸雷》

In this, the last of Gaetano Donizetti’s great trio of comic operas, the elderly Don Pasquale—with the aim of teaching his lay-about nephew Ernesto a lesson—resolves to get married and disinherit him. Once decided, Pasquale becomes enamoured with the idea; his friend Dr Malatesta offers to find him the perfect bride, his demure sister Sofronia. But Malatesta is in fact an ally of Ernesto’s and chooses as bride-to-be Ernesto’s headstrong girlfriend Norina. Don Pasquale, tricked by the trio and buffeted by Norina, is the one who learns a lesson.

These two selections essentially comprise the entirety of Act I, scene 2. Norina is reading a romantic novel about a knight (il cavalier) and his lady, and laughingly comments that she needs no lessons from books in how to control men’s affections. In the second selection, she discusses with Malatesta how they will trick Don Pasquale: “How should I act?”, she asks. “Proud? Melancholy? Weeping?” “None of those,” he answers, “pretend to be innocent and naive.”

威爾第《卡洛王子》

Premiered originally in 1867 in French as Don Carlos, the opera tells the (somewhat fictionalised) history of Carlos, son of the King Philip II of Spain (he of the Spanish Armada). Carlos has been betrothed to Princess Elisabeth of France who is instead forced to marry Philip as part of a peace treaty. Carlos is devastated and never gives up pursuing Elisabeth who is now, quite literally, his mother. His friend Rodrigo tries to protect Carlos from himself, as well as from the misplaced affections of the very jealous Princess Eboli.

歌劇《卡洛王子》於 1867 年以法語首演,講述西班牙國王菲利普二世(西班牙無敵艦隊的統帥)之子

In “O don fatale”, Princess Eboli (mezzo-soprano) sings of the “fateful gift” of her beauty which has caused her and everyone so much trouble. She repents of her machinations against the Queen and erstwhile friend Elisabeth, while swearing to save Carlos from the fate which awaits him and which she played no small part.

Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi 威爾第《弄臣》

Rigoletto is a jester at the court of the Duke of Mantua, a libertine who chases anything in a skirt. Rigoletto, a nasty piece of work, is cursed by a nobleman whose daughter has been seduced by the Duke and whom Rigoletto has mocked. The curse takes immediate effect as the Duke proceeds to seduce Rigoletto’s only daughter Gilda whom he has hidden away. The Duke drops Gilda once he’s had her; Rigoletto lures him to the house of an assassin, Sparafucile, who uses his voluptuous sister Maddalena as bait.

On arrival at Sparafucile’s house, the Duke sings — in one of opera’s bestknown arias — of his philosophy of love and women, who, he claims, “are fickle as a feather in the wind”.

In this famous quartet, the Duke seduces Maddalena, or attempts to (she’s much too streetwise to believe his blandishments), while Rigoletto tells Gilda “you see?” Gilda finally comes to know the character of the man she has fallen for ... not that it makes any difference.

Il Trovatore by Giuseppe Verdi 威爾第《遊唱詩人》

Close on the heels of Rigoletto, in 1853 Verdi wrote his most melodramatic work, Il Trovatore, a story set in medieval Spain that tells of a mysterious rebel troubadour of gypsy lineage and his illicit love for the Queen’s lady-in-waiting Leonora. Leonora is also being wooed by the ambitious and ruthless Conte di Luna who is Manrico’s sworn enemy. Beneath this story of love and jealousy is another tale of two babies swapped soon after birth, one of whom was burned alive and another who survived.

La Traviata, the third of Verdi’s great trio of tragedies, dates from 1853. Violetta, a well-compensated courtesan, is La Traviata, the “fallen woman”. But she meets Alfredo, a young bourgeois from the countryside, falls in love, and casts aside her previous life. Alfredo’s father, unfortunately, objects to the liaison and drives them apart, with fatal consequences.

歌劇《茶花女》是威爾第悲劇三幕劇的第三部,於 1853 年創作。薇奧列達是名收入豐厚的名妓,被視 作「墮落的女人」。但她遇到來自鄉村的年青資產階級阿菲度,且墜入愛河,並放棄了之前的生活。遺 憾的是,阿菲度的父親反對這段戀情,並拆散他們,隨後玉殞香消。

The immediately recognizable overture to La Traviata sets the bittersweet tone for the opera. It is filled with longing, hope, passion and sadness.

At the end of Act I, Violetta muses about the young man she has just met at her party. Can he be the one who finally tugs at her heart enough to settle down? Ah, no, she sings: I must be always free, always happy, flitting from joy to joy.

Alfredo’s father Giorgio tracks the couple down at their countryside hideaway. After asking Violetta to leave Alfredo so as to save the marriage of Alfredo’s sister and, when she refuses, finally dispatching her by noting that she won’t always have her looks (and then what?), he implores Alfredo to come back to his home in Provence where his family loves and knows what’s good for him.

威爾第《阿伊達》

Commissioned by Cairo's Khedivial Opera House and premiered there in 1871, Aïda is set in Ancient Egypt. War hero Radames is a prince who has fallen in love with the Ethiopia slave girl Aïda, much to the disgust of her mistress Amneris who has her heart set on Radames herself. Radames’s last victory captured Aïda’s father, the Ethiopia King. Aïda puts duty above love and manipulates Radames into letting her father go. Radames is captured and executed for treason; Aïda joins him and they die together.

The Act I Triumphal March is played for Radames’s victorious homecoming. Opening with a brass fanfare, the march soon becomes a vehicle for the chorus. On stage, it is often accompanied by much fanfare, a multitude of extras, dancers and, on occasion, elephants.

Humperdinck’s “Evening Prayer” is taken from Act II Scene 2 of the opera Hansel and Gretel. It is one of the most famous songs that implemented folk-inspired tunes in the opera. A duet sung in German by Hänsel and Gretel before they fell asleep on the forest floor after searching for strawberries. The song adopts a slow tempo throughout, with warm and angelic colours floating in the music to express their faithfulness in the 14 angels who watch over them as they sleep.

Mimì has arrived unbidden on Rodolfo’s doorstep. Her candle has blown out. In the confusion, she dropped her key, which Rodolfo finds and quietly pockets. He introduces himself as a poet, building “castles in the air”, content until Mimì’s two eyes robbed him of his tranquility. “I’m called Mimì,” she replies, “but I don’t know why: my name is Lucia.” She makes artificial flowers, but loves all things of beauty, and everything poetic.

Jacques Offenbach was best-known during his lifetime as a master of French operetta, works like La vie parisienne and Orphée aux enfers Les contes d’Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann), which premiered posthumously four months after his death in 1880, was Offenbach’s only real attempt at grand opera. It is an “opéra fantastique”, based on three short stories by ETA Hoffmann, who is also the protagonist of the opera.

When she is on the point of being abducted at a carriage stop by a wealthy but disreputable old man, Guillot de Morfontaine, the young student Des Grieux instead steals her away from under Guillot’s nose.

Canio found Nedda as a stray waif, took her in and married her. Her gratitude has worn off and now she is in love with Silvio, who lives in the town the troupe has just arrived in. Tonio — who suffers from both a handicap and unrequited love for Nedda — informs Canio of her tryst, with devastating consequences.

After the troupe arrives in town and is greeted with much fanfare, the villagers gather together and go off to church, for “the bells are ringing”; they sing of life and love, youth and maturity.

A townsperson had jokingly flirted with Nedda and Canio viciously warned him off. Nedda, now alone, reflects on how fierce Canio had looked (“Qual fiamma avea”) and then comments on the birds screeching in the sky above her: how free they are, she muses, just to follow their dreams.

鎮上有一人與妮達開著玩笑調情,因而遭到卡尼奧凶狠的警告。妮達獨自一人時, 回想卡尼奧凶狠的模樣,抬頭看到天空中鳴叫的鳥兒,喃喃自語道:「追尋自己的 夢想,是多麼的自由。」

In this, the opera’s most recognizable aria, Canio — who has just seen evidence of his wife’s infidelity — gets ready for the evening’s performance. “Vesti la giubba” — “put on your costume,” he sings. Although my heart is shattered, he says, don’t mistake me for a man. I am just the clown in the play.

在這首耳熟能詳的詠嘆調中,卡尼奧正為當晚的演出作好準備,而他不久 前才看到妻子不忠的證據。他唱道:「穿上你的戲裝。」又說,雖然我的 心碎了,但不必把我當成男人,我只是劇中的小丑。

Set in the time of Dante’s Florence, this one-act opera is Puccini’s only comedy. It debuted at the Metropolitan Opera in 1918, right after the First World War, as the last of three one-acts performed together as Il Trittico (the Triptych). The patriarch of the Donati family has died leaving all of his money to (horror!) the monks. The desperate family (who had already been counting their inheritance) engages Gianni Schicchi, a well-known conman, to re-do the will, to which he agrees only because his daughter Lauretta is in love with the young Rinuccio Donati and they need the money to get married.

In the work’s best- known aria, and one now a staple of both the recital and TV adverts, Lauretta, says she’s in love with Rinuccio and wants to go to the Ponte Vecchio to buy the ring. She begs her father to help; if he refuses, she says, batting her eyelids at him, she will instead throw herself in the river.

Puccini’s last opera (in fact completed posthumously), Turandot tells the tale of a Chinese princess who sets her suitors three riddles; failure to answer them all correctly means death. Calaf, a Prince from far away, is smitten and announces his intention to try to answer.

《杜蘭朵》是普契尼的最後一部歌劇,生前未能完成的作品,死後由其他人完成。故事講述中國公主向 她的求婚者提出三個謎語,如果猜錯了就得死。異國王子卡拉富拜倒在她石榴裙下,說要一試。

Calaf has been accompanied on his trip by his father, the deposed king of Tartary, now blind, and a faithful slave girl, Liù, who is in love with him, an affection he is oblivious to. In “Signore ascolta” (“Please listen”), she begs him not to undertake the trial; failure will devastate both her and his father.

卡拉富的父親是一名被廢黜的韃靼國王,現已雙目失明,然而忠心的女奴柳兒愛著 卡拉富但他卻不知情,她跟卡拉富的父親一直陪伴在側,與他同行。在 《先生,請 聽我說》中,她懇求卡拉富不要接受杜蘭朵的考驗,因為失敗了的話,她和他的父 親都會受到嚴重的打擊。

“Là, sui monti dell'Est”《茉莉花》

Puccini set several operas in what were, for Italians, exotic locations: Japan, China and the American West. In each he incorporated local melodies to provide atmosphere. The children’s chorus from Turandot (“There, in the mountains of the East”) will be immediately recognizable to Chinese audiences as “Mò Li H a ( 茉莉花 )” (“Jasmine Flower”).

浦契尼的數部歌劇中皆以日本、中國和美國西部作為背景,然而在意大利 人眼中,這些都是充滿異國情調的地方,而每部歌劇都融入當地的旋律來營造氣氛。《杜蘭朵》中的童 聲合唱(「在那東方的群山中」),中國觀眾一聽就知道是《茉莉花》。

Madama Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini 《蝴蝶夫人》

A visiting American naval officer, Benjamin Franklin Pinkerton, on a layover in Nagasaki in 1904, “buys” himself a house and a wife, both contracts renewable monthly. The girl, Cio-Cio-san (or Butterfly), believes he means it and falls in love.

1904 年,美國海軍軍官平克頓到訪長崎,短暫逗留一段時間,並為自己 「買」了一棟房子和妻子,兩 份合同均可按月續約。秋秋桑 (即蝴蝶)相信他是真心迎娶她的,因此動了真情墜入愛河。

“Un bel dì vedremo”《美好的一天》

Three years have passed since Pinkerton sailed away, promising to return, unaware that Cio-Cio-san was pregnant with his son. She watches for ships entering the harbour. “Un bel dì ... One fine day ...” she sings to her skeptical maid Suzuki, “we’ll see a white ship,” and it’ll be him, come to reclaim her. Pinkerton does return, that very day, in fact, but he isn’t, alas, alone.

After seeing his ship in the harbour through her telescope, Butterfly has waited up all night for his return, accompanied by the “Humming chorus” which evokes (falsely, as it turns out) calm and peace.

蝴蝶透過望遠鏡看到他的船停在港口後,整夜守候著他回來,伴隨著她的 曲目《遠處傳來的聲音》喚起了平靜和安寧,縱使一切都是假象。

In Act I, with the marriage complete and the guests sent away, Butterfly and Pinkerton are finally alone. “Love me well,” she sings, “but in a small way, for we are a people accustomed to small things.” Pinkerton beckons her to the marriage bed.

Oblivious to pleading from his father, loyal retainer Liu and Turandot’s own father and his ministers, he proceeds to put his name forward and to everyone’s surprise, manages to answer all three riddles.

杜蘭朵是位中國公主,她要求她眾多的追求者回答三個謎語,對於那些不幸的求婚者而言,失敗意味著 遭處決,迄今為止已多次發生。外國王子卡拉富見到她後,即被她的美貌所吸引。他不顧父親、忠心待 女柳兒、杜蘭朵的父親和大臣們的懇求,毅然報上自己的名字,令所有人意料之外的是,他答對了所有 謎語。

Turandot is horrified. Calaf, wishing her to marry him by choice, gives her one chance. No one yet knows who he is. If she can discover his name by dawn, he says, she can renounce and execute him. The entire city is in a frenzy: “No one can sleep,” he sings, “but they’ll never find my name. I’ll tell myself when I kiss her. At dawn, victory will be mine!”

A world-renowned Chinese tenor from Hong Kong, Warren Mok has made frequent guest appearances in many leading opera houses throughout the world. His operatic repertoire exceeds 60 roles including Cavaradossi in Tosca , Calaf in Turandot, Rodolfo in La bohème, Radamès in Aïda and many others. In recent years, Mok has been very active in promoting opera and classical music in Hong Kong, Macao and the Mainland. He is currently the Artistic Director of Opera Hong Kong, Fujian Grand Theatre and Zhuhai Huafa Grand Theatre, and was also the Artistic Director of the Macao International Music Festival.

Mok is currently a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Government of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) and conferred an Honorary Doctorate by The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2021, Honorary University Fellowship by Hong Kong Baptist University in 2019, Officer of the Order of the Star of Italy by the Government of Italy in 2018, Medal of Honour by the HKSAR Government in 2011, World Outstanding Chinese Award in 2010, and both Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella della Solidarietà Italiana (Knight of the Star of Solidarity of Italy) by the Government of Italy and Chevalier dans I’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Art and Letter) by the Government of France in 2008. In 2012, China’s Three Tenors — Warren Mok, Dai Yuqiang and Wei Song toured the world to promote Chinese culture. In 2015, Mok was appointed as a member of Beijing Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, fostering the bridge and development between the two cities. He was also a former member of Zhuhai Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Charles Olivieri-Munroe is currently Artistic Director of the Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra, honorary conductor with the North Czech Philharmonic Teplice and principal guest conductor of the Thürringen Philharmonie in Germany. The Maltese / Canadian conductor’s hold on public imagination stems from a ‘combination of talent and charisma’ (New York Times) and a ‘passion for purity of orchestral sound’ (Toronto Star) supported by a proven ability for connecting with a strikingly diverse audience. In the opera house, he has appeared in Berlin, Milan, Venice and Warsaw. He recently drew international acclaim for conducting the Czech premiere of Robert Schumann’s opera Genoveva at the Czech National Theatre for which he has been commissioned to construct a suite from the opera. Charles Olivieri-Munroe is First Prize winner of the 2000 ‘Prague Spring International Music Festival’ Conducting Competition.

Residing in Italy, Bing Bing Wang is the first Chinese to have graduated with a Master’s degree from the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory of Music in Milan. She was awarded as one of the top ten sopranos in China by CCTV. Her roles include Nedda in Pagliacci, Micaëla in Carmen, Mimì in La Bohème, Violetta in La Traviata, Adina in L’Elisir d’Amore in opera houses of Italy, France, Australia, the United States, Israel, Slovenia, Romania and Latvia. Recently she was invited by Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago and Taormina Opera Festival for the roles of Liù in Turandot and Musetta in La Bohème. She was also Cio-Cio-san in Madama Butterfly at Serbian National Opera. In 2019, Sony Classic Label signed her to produce her first Italian arias album, being the first Chinese soprano to have a CD released by Sony.

A top graduate from London’s Royal Academy of Music, Nancy Yuen has made Ciocio-san (Madama Butterfly) her signature role, winning great critical acclaim since her debut with the Welsh National Opera. Yuen has since repeated the role with English National Opera, West Australia Opera, Opera Queensland, Singapore Lyric Opera, New Zealand International Festival of Arts, and at the Royal Albert Hall in 1998, 2000 and 2003. Other operatic roles include Violetta, Gilda, Tosca, Aïda, Liù, Desdemona, Mimì and Soong Chingling. The operas she has directed include: Così fan tutte, The Merry Widow, Prima la Musica, Carmen and The Marriage of Figaro. Yuen has been the Head of Vocal Studies with The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts (HKAPA) since 2010 and Honorary Artistic Director of Singapore Lyric Opera since 2015. Yuen was elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in 2014 and was appointed as Professor by the HKAPA in 2018.

A renowned baritone in China, Sun Li is the President of Fujian Opera Dance and Drama Theatre, Director of Fujian Folk Music and Symphony Exchange Centre, Deputy Secretary-General of the China Opera Research Society and member of the Chinese Musicians Association. He performed Ping in Turandot for cultural exchange in Egypt. In 2008, the opera Farewell My Concubine starring Sun toured six cities in the United States. He also won Wenhua Performance Award in 2010 by virtue of this play. In 2010, Nucci acclaimed his skill being ‘so perfect that amazes him!’ at Leo Nucci masterclass.

The Opera Hong Kong Orchestra is composed of nearly 60 outstanding experienced musicians, most of whom are soloists. All the world’s major opera houses have their own orchestras. In view of the significant increase of opera audience and the various programmes developed by Opera Hong Kong in recent years, the company decided to establish its own orchestra to further that growth. Opera Hong Kong Orchestra marks a major milestone in the development of operatic art in Hong Kong.

香港歌劇院樂團由本地近六十位優秀樂 手組成,他們經驗豐富,本身多是獨奏 家,堪稱樂壇精英。宏觀世界各地主要 歌劇院皆有專屬樂隊,而歌劇藝術近年 在本港有長足的發展,實需要有專門的 歌劇院樂團來配合。香港歌劇院樂團的 成立標誌本地歌劇發展一個里程碑,推 動歌劇藝術更上一層樓。

Currently the Second Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Anders Hui first joined the orchestra in 2010. In 2018, he toured with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Quartet to Shanghai and Beijing, highlighting a highly acclaimed performance in the Beijing Music Festival collaborating with Andreas Ottensamer and the Shanghai Quartet, as well as giving Masterclasses in the Shanghai Orchestra Academy. He was invited by Christoph Eschenbach to be the Assistant Concertmaster for the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival Orchestra, performing with soloist Lang Lang in a month-long 23-concert tour across North America. Hui is currently an adjunct faculty member at Hong Kong Baptist University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

許致雨自 2010 年起加入香港管弦樂團,現任香港管弦樂團的樂團第二副 首席。 2018 年曾代表港樂四重奏於北京國際音樂節與奧登薩默合作五重 奏演出以及與上海四重奏合作八重奏演出獲得廣泛好評,並於上海樂隊 學院開展大師班課程以及四重奏演出獲得圓滿成功。許氏曾獲艾森巴赫 委任為席勒斯威格.霍爾斯坦節慶管弦樂團的樂團副首席,與鋼琴家郎 朗一起在北美進行為期一個月的 23 場巡迴演出。許氏也是一位富熱誠的 音樂教育家,最初在讀書時期被任命為印第安納大學少數的小提琴教員 之一。現於香港浸會大學擔任客席教授,並於香港科技大學擔任重奏及 室內樂課程客席教授。

OPERA HONG KONG CHORUS

香港歌劇院合唱團

The Opera Hong Kong Chorus was established in 2004. The Chorus was directed and developed by Mr. Jimmy Chan who established it as one of the leading choirs in Hong Kong. Mr. Chan retired from the position of Chorus Director in 2013 and was succeeded by Mr. Alex Tam who is well-known locally for his operatic performing skills as well as being an accomplished choirmaster. Under his direction, the Chorus has attained new heights of artistic excellence.

Unlike their full-time counterparts in professional choruses in other major world cities, members of the Opera Hong Kong Chorus are all part-time singers from all walks of life. Whilst there are currently more than 60 active members, the Chorus size and composition varies according to the requirement of each production. This pool of gifted singers includes current music students, highly qualified graduates, music teachers and experienced performers, all of whom have been selected through competitive public auditions.

Since making its debut in December 2004 in La Traviata , the Chorus has participated in over 36 fully staged operas including the Opera Hong Kong productions of The Magic Flute at The National Centre for the Performing Arts of China in 2009 and the world premiere of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen in Hong Kong in 2011. In addition to major productions, the Chorus gives public recitals of works such as Verdi’s Requiem and Operatic Excerpts, including choral and solo performances, with the aim of promoting opera and high quality choral music in Hong Kong.

香港歌劇院合唱團於 2004 年創立, 在指揮家陳晃相先生的率領及推動 之下,香港歌劇院合唱團已成為香 港優秀的合唱團之一。 2013 年,陳 先生卸任合唱團總監一職,由歌劇 演唱家及屢任合唱團團長的譚天樂 先生接任,帶領合唱團向更高的藝 術水平邁進。

有別於世界各地主要城市的全職合 唱團,香港歌劇院合唱團由兼職成 員組成。他們來自各行各業,有 音樂學生、老師及經驗豐富的表演 者,至今已有約 60 名活躍團員的 合唱團,全都通過嚴格的公開篩 選。每次演出人數會因應製作規模 而調整。

香港歌劇院合唱團自從 2004 年於 大型歌劇《茶花女》首演以後,已 參與超過 36 部歌劇演出,包括於 2009 年在中國國家大劇院上演、 由香港歌劇院製作的《魔笛》,以 及於 2011 年香港首演、由香港歌 劇院委約及製作的《中山.逸仙》。 除了大型歌劇以外,合唱團亦參與 音樂會如威爾第的《安魂曲》及歌 劇選段的合唱及獨唱演出,把歌劇 藝術與優秀的合唱音樂推廣至普羅 大眾。

OPERA HONG KONG CHILDREN CHORUS

香港歌劇院兒童合唱團

Established in January 2008, Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus (OHKCC) has grown to become a leading children’s chorus in Hong Kong. The mission of OHKCC is to educate, develop and inspire children to enjoy the beauty of opera and develop a commitment to excellence through singing and stage performances. In addition to staging its own concerts, OHKCC collaborates with renowned singers in grand-scale productions by Opera Hong Kong.

Members of OHKCC have ample opportunities to learn vocal techniques through master classes and perform a variety of music genres, from opera to musical and choral works, in both solo and ensemble settings. They also learn to sing in the original language. The operas including English, German, Italian, and French. Members can discover and nurture their musical gift through these activities while expanding their intellectual capacity and cultural horizon.

香港歌劇院兒童合唱團於 2008 年 1 月成立,至今已發展成為香港最優秀 的兒童合唱團之一。香港歌劇院兒童 合唱團致力培育兒童的音樂修養,啟 發他們的音樂潛能,讓他們感受和欣 賞歌劇之美,以及當中的豐富藝術和 文化內涵。此外,香港歌劇院積極讓 合唱團參與其大型製作,及與蜚聲中 外的歌唱家同台演出。

此外,香港歌劇院亦為合唱團成員提 供參與大師班的機會,提升他們的聲 樂技巧。成員經常參與獨唱和合唱表 演,並以英文、德文、意大利文和法 文等語言演出歌劇、音樂劇及合唱作 品等。香港歌劇院希望透過不同層面 的培訓和演出,啟發兒童合唱團成員 的才能,擴闊他們的文化視野。

Hong Kong-born mezzo-soprano, Anna Chan received training at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and holds a Master’s degree in voice from The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. While studying at HKAPA, she received the Hong Kong Jockey Club scholarship and studied with Professor Nancy Yuen. Chan was an invited artist at the Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale in 2015 and presented a solo recital at the Church of St Peter in Chains in Malta. Chan sang the role of Mrs. Herring in Britten’s Albert Herring at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, which gained a fine review from Glyn Pursglove. Chan also covered Vera Boronel in Menotti’s The Consul at the Welsh National Opera. Other operatic engagements in Hong Kong include Idamante in Idomeneo, Lucia in Cavalleria rusticana, Mercédès in Carmen, and Cornelia in Giulio Cesare. Chan’s oratorio credits include the alto solos in Mozart’s Requiem and Verdi’s Requiem with Hong Kong Oratorio Society.

陳珮珊是於香港土生土長的女中音,曾於英國皇家伯明翰音樂學院、英 國皇家威爾士音樂戲劇學院接受訓練,並於香港演藝學院修畢碩士學位。

她於香港演藝學院時獲香港賽馬會頒發獎學金,並師隨著名女高音阮妙 芬教授主修聲樂。她於 2015 年曾受邀參加馬爾他姆迪納大教堂當代藝術 雙年展;並曾於馬爾他聖彼得鎖鏈教堂舉行獨唱會。在英國皇家威爾士 音樂戲劇學院修業期間,於布烈頓《亞伯特赫林》演出擔任海林夫人一 角並獲得格林.珀斯格洛夫的好評。她亦曾獲威爾士國家歌劇院選中擔 任梅洛蒂歌劇《領事》維拉.博羅內爾的替補演出。陳氏在香港的其他 歌劇演出包括《伊多美尼奧》的伊達曼特、《鄉村騎士》的露茜亞、《卡 門》的梅賽黛斯和《凱撒大帝》的歌妮莉亞。聖樂作品的演出包括與香 港聖樂團合作於莫扎特《安魂曲》和威爾第《安魂曲》中擔任女低音獨 唱。

Children Chorus Annual Concert 兒童合唱團週年音樂會

Established in January 2008, Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus has grown to become one of the leading children choruses in Hong Kong. The Annual Concert features the members taking the centre stage with professional design of stage set, props, costumes and lighting and to sing thoughtfully chosen repertoires with different music genres in ensemble and solo settings. It is a performance opportunity highly valued by the members, often regarded as a life’s memorable experience.

University Concerts and Mini Opera School Tours inspire youngsters to explore the art form through staging of trimmed opera performances at local schools. The University Concert focuses on the introduction of the opera history and development with live demonstrations of songs in different periods while the Mini Opera School Tours features a 30-minute light-hearted performance followed by a Q&A session to introduce to students the many interesting aspects and elements of opera, from behind the scene to stage setting, composer’s history, terminology and other music knowledge.

Since 2008, Opera Hong Kong has organized the tours for a total of 64,843 students from 235 schools and 10 university visits.

學音樂會主要講解歌劇的歷史及發展,並由歌唱家演繹不同時期的代表曲目;而小型歌劇 的演出長約 30 分鐘,演出後設問答環節讓同學了解歌劇的各種元素,包括台前幕後的細 節、歷史、術語、音樂等知識。

Summer Camp 夏令營

Inaugurated in 2009, summer camp aims to promote singing to the wider community. The 3-week intensive vocal and performance training programme is directed by renowned directors of children’s productions, and taught by professional music, drama and dance instructors. Participants are highly excited about the graduating performance of summer camp. It is a rare opportunity where they can take the stage of a professional venue to perform like professional singers and actors. They enjoy the summer camp, making new friends and broadening their social horizons.

Scholarship 獎學金

Scholarships support talented local young artists to participate in music training through financing their full-time undergraduate and postgraduate vocal studies at local and overseas tertiary institutions. Recipients are provided with singing and teaching opportunities at Education and Outreach programmes. In addition, scholarships are also offered to secondary school students with financial aid for their participation in regular children chorus classes and summer camp, providing the underprivileged youngsters an invaluable opportunity to stage performance. We hope the recipients can eventually embark on a professional opera career.

夏令營自 2009 年創辦以來,每年暑 假均向年輕人提供獨特的學習與演 出機會,並希望將歌唱藝術進一步 推而廣之。學員在為期三週的密集 訓練中接受由專業的兒童音樂劇導 演、聲樂導師及編舞指導,進行聲 樂、演技及舞蹈訓練,並在畢業演 出中展現訓練成果。學員能夠在舞 台上像專業的歌唱家及演員般演 出,享受當中的過程,建立友誼及 擴闊視野,實屬難能可貴的機會。

獎學金資助具潛質的年輕人修讀本 地及海外學院的本科生及研究生聲 樂課程,其後並讓他們在教育及外 展活動中享有演唱及教學機會。香 港歌劇院亦同時為有經濟困難的學 生提供獎學金,讓他們亦有機會接 受兒童合唱團恆常課程及參與夏令 營,提供寶貴的學習與踏上舞台演 出的機會。我們冀望各獎學金受助 者能夠在歌劇界發展事業,協助推 廣香港的文化及藝術發展。

With the generous support of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the 9-month programme starting at the end of 2020 provides vocal training to over 80 visually impaired participants with the aim of empowering them to face adversity through artistic achievement. The programme culminated with a final performance which was filmed and produced as a short concert video.

青年演唱家計劃 Young Artist Programme

Opera Hong Kong is committed to promoting the city’s brightest, young opera singers. In 2015, OHK launched the Jockey Club Opera Hong Kong Young Artist Development and Education Programme (the Programme), a three-year opera training programme funded by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust (The Trust). The success of the Programme led to its renewal by The Trust for another three years, providing intensive training to 12 local artists. The Programme has been completed successfully in March 2022.

The programme has benefited 22 local talents, nearly 156 primary and secondary schools and more than 35,000 students. Encouragingly, it has showcased a number of timeless masterworks for 38,000-plus online and offline audiences.

香港歌劇院積極培養本地優秀年青的歌唱家,歌劇院於 2015 年推出由賽馬會慈善信 託基金捐助為期三年的「賽馬會香港歌劇院青年演唱家發展及教育計劃」非常成功, 得到各界認同。香港賽馬會慈善信託基金遂繼續全力贊助,推出新一輪的三年培訓計 劃,向十二位本地青年演唱家提供密集訓練。計劃經已在 2022 年 3 月完滿結束。

計劃已培訓22位本地歌唱家,累計惠及接近156 間中小學、超過35,000名學生, 並為38,000多名觀眾線上線下呈獻多齣曠世鉅作,令人鼓舞。

Opera Hong Kong Chorus and Opera Hong Kong Children Chorus were established in 2004 and 2008 respec tively and are becoming recognized forces in the local choral scene.
