A WORD FROM THE GENERAL DIRECTOR
Dear Friends of the Opera,
It is with great pride and emotion that I write to you on the occasion of my very first production as General Director of Opéra de Montréal. To step into this role is both a privilege and a responsibility. I wish to begin by thanking you for your passion, your loyalty, and your trust. You are at the heart of everything we do.
We open this new chapter with Jenůfa by Leoš Janáček, a deeply moving work in which music carries the full weight of human drama. This story of secrets, sacrifice, and redemption reminds us that opera does more than entertain. It reveals the fragility and strength of the human spirit.
With Jenůfa we also affirm our vision for the future of Opéra de Montréal: to present works that combine artistic power with contemporary relevance. Opera today is a living art, rooted in our city and open to the world. It is our mission to bring it to life for you in meaningful and resonant ways.
I am thrilled to share this journey with you, and I look forward to building the future of our company together.
I look forward to meeting you in the foyers before or after the show.
Even today, Jenůfa speaks to us through its timeless themes.
Pregnant before marriage, the young woman must withdraw, crushed by the moral and social weight of her village.
Her stepmother, the Kostelnička, will kill the newborn to spare them both from unbearable disgrace.
Jenůfa will forgive her for this murderous act of cowardice, and even open her heart to the man who once scarred her.
Through his vibrant, expressionist music—deeply rooted in the Czech language—Janáček gives powerful, truthful voice to all the contradictions of the human heart and to the strength of forgiveness.
Let us live, in full measure, this profoundly moving work.

ACT I
At the Buryja family mill, Jenůfa anxiously awaits news of the latest military draft, which threatens to enlist her lover Števa. She is secretly carrying Števa’s child and hopes to marry him before the pregnancy is discovered. But Števa’s jealous half-brother Laca also loves Jenůfa. Laca suffers in silence, growing increasingly resentful. Meanwhile, shepherd boy Jano is proud that he has learned to read thanks to Jenůfa’s teaching, and mill workers go about their business. Grandmother Buryja praises Jenůfa for her kindness. Then comes the news: Števa will not be drafted. Jenůfa breathes a sigh of relief while Laca seethes. Števa arrives, drunk, and begins celebrating noisily with the other recruits. Jenůfa tries in vain to reason with him. Suddenly, Jenůfa’s stern stepmother, the Kostelnička, brings the revelry to an end. She declares that Števa must give up drinking for one year before he is allowed to marry Jenůfa. Jenůfa is gutted. Later, Laca confronts her. Consumed with jealousy, he berates her for loving Števa. She defends herself, but in a moment of uncontrolled rage, he slashes her face with a knife. Jenůfa is disfigured.
ACT II
Five months later, Jenůfa has given birth in total secrecy. Weakened and disfigured, she has been kept hidden by the Kostelnička, who publicly pretends that Jenůfa has been sent to recover in Vienna. Fearing scandal and shame, the Kostelnička summons Števa, after giving Jenůfa a sleeping potion. In desperation, she begs him to marry Jenůfa, but he refuses, saying that he finds her too changed,
too scarred. He announces that he is engaged to Karolka, the mayor’s daughter. When Laca arrives, the Kostelnička, distraught, lies to him, saying that the baby is dead. Laca, who sincerely loves Jenůfa, still wishes to marry her. The Kostelnička has been driven to the edge. When Laca leaves, she rushes out into the freezing night and drowns the baby in the river. Jenůfa is disoriented when she awakes: seeing neither her child nor her stepmother, she kneels to pray. When the Kostelnička returns, she tells Jenůfa that the baby fell ill and died, and that Števa has abandoned her. Laca returns to ask Jenůfa’s hand in marriage. She accepts, hoping for a fresh start at last.
ACT III
Two months later, guests gather at the mill for Jenůfa and Laca’s wedding. The mayor and his wife are there with their daughter Karolka and Števa, her fiancé. Jenůfa is quiet, the Kostelnička tense and withdrawn. The ceremony is cut short by a sudden commotion: a baby has been found frozen in the river, still dressed. Jenůfa recognizes her son’s clothing and is shattered by the shock. She herself is accused of the murder – but the Kostelnička confesses. Her crime, she says, was driven by fear, shame, and misguided love for Jenůfa. Scandal erupts: horrified, Karolka rejects Števa. Laca is crushed but stays by Jenůfa’s side. Jenůfa forgives her stepmother and calls for compassion towards her. As the Kostelnička is led away, Jenůfa takes Laca’s hand. Wounded but still standing, the couple turns towards an uncertain future.
A WORD FROM THE STAGE DIRECTOR
Sigmund Freud and Leos Janáček were born just a few miles and a few years apart in the Carpathian foothills. Both were committed to exploring the world of suppressed feeling and deep emotional truths, and in many ways Jenůfa is a study of extreme human behaviour caused by familial trauma. This remarkable opera is inspired by a play written by Gabriela Preissová, who was only 29 when her bold and unsettling work captured Janáček’s attention and became the foundation for his masterpiece.
This drama examines the forces that lead us to commit acts of great violence, how we need to imagine extreme narratives to compel these actions. These stories — some sourced in real situations, others in our sense of entitlement — can overwhelm us with their insane logic, and this makes the opera very relevant to today’s world.
As critic Norman Lebrecht has noted, “Janáček depicted real life in real time, in the raw, a village in the middle of anywhere with ordinary men and women,” and Jenůfa was one of the first opera dramas that wasn’t dealing with famous historical figures, or gods and mythological figures. It could be taking place in a remote community today, with traditional folkloric costumes mixing with modern dress. Though originally set in a rural community almost 150 years ago, I worked with the brilliant designer Debra Hanson to create a world that feels timeless.
Just as the characters are going through tremendous personal upheavals, we wanted to show that the world was changing around them. Old values are being challenged, just as Janáček was creating his own musical voice with this stunning piece of music theatre.
It’s important to understand that the composer was dealing with extreme personal loss as he was writing this piece. His son had recently died, and his beloved daughter Olga was dying as he composed this work. The pain and longing for love are so palpable, as is the fear and sense of isolation.
I wasn’t raised with opera, but when I first experienced this work, something in me shifted, and I hope that this excitement will be obvious to anyone experiencing this production.

LEOŠ JANÁČEK
(1854 – 1928)
Born on July 3, 1854, in Hukvaldy, Moravia (in the modern-day Czech Republic), Leoš Janáček was an iconic Czech composer and a major figure in modern music. His unique style was profoundly influenced by the folk music of his homeland and by his innovative approach to musical language.
Born to a family of modest means, Leoš Janáček showed remarkable musical talent at a young age. His musical education, which began at the Prague Organ School, was shaped by his passion for ethnography and collecting folk songs. His compositions would draw inspiration from traditional Moravian melodies for the rest of his life. In addition to composing, Janáček taught music and worked as a conductor in multiple cities, spending most of his career in Brno.
Leoš Janáček had an exceptional gift for weaving the inflections, rhythms, and accents of spoken language into his music. Through these so-called “speech melodies,” he developed a highly individual and expressive style with an almost theatrical adherence to the text.
Janáček’s operas are among his most famous works. Jenůfa (1904), his first major success, is a poignant blend of popular melodies and emotional depth. His later works Káťa Kabanová (1921), The Cunning Little Vixen (1923) and From the House of the Dead (1930) gradually adopted a more modern style, without losing their inherent tension between tradition and innovation.
Leoš Janáček died on August 12, 1928, in Ostrava, leaving behind an unparalleled musical legacy that continues to fascinate musicians and music lovers worldwide. His works, profoundly forward-looking and yet rooted in folklore, remain to this day a vibrant tribute to the Czech spirit and a monument of classical music in the 20th century.

Social Impact and Education
Sing Together. Heal Together.
Opera’s power extends beyond the stage. With your support, it can bring hope and recovery to cancer patients across Quebec.
Last week, 15 women recovering from cancer joined a CHANTONS workshop at Hôpital Charles-Le Moyne. Led by choir director Myriam Leblanc, they sang Offenbach’s Barcarolle with astonishing strength and hope, reclaiming a sense of control over their bodies and minds.
CHANTONS supports patients facing “chemo brain,” memory and cognitive challenges affecting most undergoing treatment. Partnering with artists and researchers, we’ve already observed remarkable results: participants report 50% reductions in fatigue, anxiety, and depression, alongside improved well-being.
Your support can make CHANTONS a permanent program, expanding to multiple hospitals across Quebec next year. Every gift transforms opera into a lifeline of wellness and community, giving patients the chance to heal through the power of song.
Pierre and Myriam with Vanessa L.-Longpré, Director of Communications and Marketing at the Fondation Hôpital Charles-LeMoyne; Dominique Tremblay, Professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Université de Sherbrooke, and regular researcher at the Charles-Le Moyne Research Centre; and Dr. Catherine Prady, Oncologist and Medical Co-Manager of the Montérégie Integrated Cancer Centre.
