Open Ways Letter from the Editor Lammas is here already! Where has this year flown to? The article by Glentpad in this edition of the newsletter expresses my feelings precisely! We all need to celebrate what we have! Lammas is also a time of regret and farewells, of harvesting and preserving both food and memories, reflecting on the progress of the goals you had for the year, and contemplating the “harvests” of your year, be they physical or metaphysical. In the 2013 Llewellyn’s Sabbat Almanac, an article by Kenny Klein (The Feast of First Loaves) mentions an old tradition “Calling home the Pagans”. Here is your call to come home and enjoy a picnic with like minded individuals- The Nine Houses of Gaia’s Pagan Picnic on July 20th at Creston Park. Come and celebrate with us! The map and address for Creston Park are in this newsletter. This event is held in SE Portland.

Blessed Be, Angel

It Takes a Village to Raise... a Village Do you have knowledge and spiritual gifts to share with your community? Volunteer to present a workshop at the Northwest Fall Equinox Festival 2014! Please email a description of the workshop you wish to present to nwfef@ninehouses.org. Be sure to include the length of the workshop and any preferred accommodations it might entail.

Do you have BIG MAGICK to share with your community? We are accepting proposals for NWFEF 2015 main ritual! The purpose of NWFEF is to celebrate the harvest. The main theme, ritual, and workshops differ from year to year depending on selection from proposals submitted by community members (you!). Your ritual proposal must have a complete outline; please contact nwfef@ninehouses.org to request "Tips and Tricks", a "rubric" to assist you in composing your proposal. Ritual proposal submission may be emailed to nwfef@ninehouses.org or mailed to PO Box 33182, Portland, OR 97292.

Address issues of interest to pagans, Wiccan’s, polytheists, Buddhists, or nature spiritualists. Where appropriate, include bibliographic references, sidebars, and graphics. Manuscripts will be accepted in any readable form; however we prefer articles via email if possible. Manuscripts and letters selected for publication may be edited for clarity, brevity, accuracy, or editorial consistency. Always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you wish your work returned. Never send your only copy! The editorial staff reserves the right to accept or reject any manuscript or work of art submitted for publication. Contributing Columnists (reoccurring) Column writing offers a lot of flexibility as well as a wide-ranging variety of topics on which to expound. Submit a proposal stating the intention of the column and frequency. Contributors that commit to being a reoccurring contributor to 4 or more issues will be given a complementary business card size advertisement. Contributions may be: • Regular features with the same by-line, title, and/or premise. • Of a subject matter that is by nature practical (how-to), historical, literary, ethical, philosophical, educational, social, moral, political, inspirational, magical, or whatever happens to stoke your bellows. • In a style appropriate for the subject matter, the author’s personal taste, and the editors guidelines of this publication. Book reviews We welcome and encourage your written book reviews. These do not need to be scholarly critiques of the material by someone with a lifetime of experience with the subject matter; often the best, most useful reviews are written by those with whom the readership can identify. The book you are reviewing does not need to be a new release. Readers are interested in your reaction to the book: did you enjoy it? Did it provoke any new ideas or change for you? Was it useful? Artwork Open Ways encourages submissions of all kinds of artwork: Larger pieces for the cover, smaller works for illustration, and even smaller ones to accent and fill in. Please be sure your images are high quality jpeg or tif files with 300dpi. Need help, just ask! Poetry We regularly run poetry in each issue, and plan to continue this as long as we have the poems to do so. Poems should be of reasonable length and on Pagan/Wiccan topics. Ones that reflect your personal thoughts and experiences are preferred. Reporting Open Ways needs your stories of events, speakers, and public festivals in your area to share with our readers. Or maybe you went for a walk in the woods and had an interesting experience. These are stories you would share around the circle.

Send submissions to: editor@ninehouses.org openwayseditor@gmail.com World Wide Web: http://ninehouses.org Please DO NOT send the only copy of your work! All submissions will be accepted and/or edited for content at the discretion of the editorial staff.

The Hero’s Journey: The Hierophant By Chrissy Lavielle

This is the key that pushes all my buttons. It’s the “I’m right because God told me so” card.

Pope Pius XII (1939-1958) wearing the three tiered papal crown and giving the sign of benediction It’s definitely a picture of a pope. There’s the three tiered papal crown and the triple cross, which symbolizes his influence in all three worlds— formative, creative, and material. He sits between the pillars of duality and gives God’s blessing or benediction to the two priests kneeling before him. But the history of key five, The Hierophant or The Pope, goes way back, centuries before Jesus was even a gleam in Jehovah’s eye. Way back in the day, Zeus/Jupiter, the great father god of the Mediterranean world, was the only god who could release someone who had committed a great sacrilege from the torment of Furies that pursued him. But that person couldn’t just do the rites and ask Zeus for mercy himself, he had to find someone to do the rites for him, hopefully someone knowledgeable. Because the Furies were old gods, and the

Lammas 2014

9

Open Ways new Hellenistic gods like Zeus didn’t mess with the old gods without a very good reason. (Paul Huson, in The Devil’s Picture Book) Is this beginning to look familiar? Centuries later, the pagan High Priest of Rome was called the pontifex maximus, from the Latin pons, or bridge, and facere, to make. In other words, he was the top guy, the bridge-maker between the gods and men. Today, the Roman Catholic pope is also called the Pontif. Wikipedia defines hierophant as “a person who brings religious congregants into the presence of that which is deemed holy. The word comes from Ancient Greece, where it was constructed from the combination of ta hiera, “the holy,” and phainein, “to show.” In Attica it was the title of the chief priest at the Eleusinian Mysteries. A hierophant is an interpreter of sacred mysteries and arcane principles.” I can’t think of any god or goddess to associate with The Hierophant because he is a human being whose purpose is to present the messages of the gods to his people. He’s very different from the High Priestess, who is the archetypal keeper of the mysteries, the inner or hidden realms of religion.

Vav is the Hebrew letter attributed to this card. It means hook or connection. Every column of the Torah begins with the letter Vav, which “hooks” the word of God to the parchment, or material world. The sign of Taurus, the bull, is associated with The Hierophant and lends its practical, earthy nature to the mean-

ing of the card, whose number is

5, the number of man.

And so what we have here is someone who delivers the messages of the gods to people who, for a multitude of reasons, can’t hear them for themselves. This is very convenient when you are setting up a religion (from the Latin religare, to reconnect), because in most organized religions, the priests reconnect to the divine and interpret what they hear for their flocks. It keeps things neater that way. Everyone is on the same page and arguments are minimized. And besides, priests are specialists in the field of religion and have spent years reconnecting with God. They’ve developed short cuts to the divine and are experts on the problems that beset humanity. Organized religion’s take on the matter is that it’s best to leave these things to the experts. Even the Protestant sects, who broke away from the Catholic Church because they believed that anyone could talk to God and interpret his words in The Holy Bible. still go to church and sit and listen to a minister (or Hierophant) tell them about Gods word and what it means.

10

Lammas 2014

Open Ways But this is also the card of personal revelation. We are all capable of connecting with the gods and hearing the small, clear voice of the divine. The first trick is to have the faith to believe in what we hear and not relegate it to the dust heap of delusion and wishful thinking. The second trick is to find the courage to act on what we hear. The ancient Greeks believed that the gods often spoke to them through the mouths of ordinary people. The crazy guy who sat on the corner might have a message for you from Hermes. I am fond of this idea and believe it holds true even today. I know that I’ve often felt moved to say something to a complete stranger for no apparent reason, and the message seemed to be helpful to them. At least they said it was, but maybe they were just humoring me so I’d go away.

Michelangelo's Moses from "Under the Influence", Lowrider Tattoo This is also the card for someone who is on a mission from God. The religious fanatic who believes they, and they alone, have a direct connection with the true diety. Moses spoke with God frequently. He communed with him up on Mt Sinai and returned to his people with the Ten Commandments. A candidate for fanaticism if ever there was one, and Michelangelo must have agreed. He gave his statue of Moses a marvelously fanatical expression. When The Hierophant appears in a reading, it could mean that the querent has a message to give to the world in general or to someone in particular, or that an authority figure has a message for her. It could suggest conformity and a need to fit in, or a preference for the outer forms of organized religion. It might even signal the querent’s need to think about his own religion and whether or not it is feeding his soul. If it is reversed, it could mean problems with authority, fanaticism, or nonconformity.

Open Ways

In fiction, The Hierophant should never be confused with the wide-eyed mystic with a vision unless that mystic begins to preach about his vision or takes steps to make it a reality. Ray Kinsella, the farmer in Field of Dreams, sees a vision of a baseball diamond in his cornfield and a voice informs him that “If you build it, he will come.” But he only becomes The Hierophant when he plows under his corn, builds the diamond, and has the courage to not replant it when his mortgage comes due. The Wizard, in The Wizard of Oz, was a crooked Hierophant. When his balloon landed in Oz, he set himself up as the servant of a powerful, godlike, wizard and took over control of the Emerald City.

Oz, The Great and Terrible Can you think of other Hierophant characters? They can be a main character like Ray Kinsella, a mentor/trickster figure like the Wizard, or any of the other archetypes. FEBRUARY 7,2011 · 6:11 PM

I came upon this picture and an article streamed by National Geographic and couldn’t resist.

The men in the top hats are Punxsutawney Phil’s Inner Circle. Every February 2nd, as soon as the sun is up far enough to cast a shadow, they proceed to Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and yank Phil out of his hollow stump. If he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. I knew all this, but I didn’t know that, according to this article, these men speak with Phil and get his official prognostication, which they then deliver to the waiting multitude. In case you missed it, this year they said that he said there would be an early spring.

Open Ways Cleansing Fire By Jennifer Westran The lonesome feeling, Nowhere to turn. All by myself, These feelings, they burn. The confusion, the pain, The love woven throughout. I look to the sky, I start to shout. “Why is this? What have I done? Did I make a mistake?” But replies, there were none. I look to the earth, As I begin to cry. There is no one but me, Me myself and I. I look to the fire, The cleansing smoke. There I find solace, A power to invoke. “I give myself freely, To you and all your needs. Use me, help me, Let me be free.” With these tools in hand, I face the world. I am one again, Let the future unfurl.

Open Ways Face book personality test

PERSONALITY TEST First Choose An Eye To See What It Reveals About You An eye is very complex, beautiful and intriguing. The eye symbolizes clarity, focus and ...purpose. The eye you are drawn to below reveals quite a bit about your personality. Choose the eye you like best to learn more about yourself. This is a fun eye personality test! What eye are you drawn to? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9? You can choose more than 1 if you feel drawn. Eye 1, Deep Down You Are Open. You’re the type of person who will welcome almost anyone into your life and heart. You believe that it’s better to take a risk and get hurt than to close yourself off to the world. You don’t show the world your fears or insecurities. You believe that your problems should be dealt with privately. You try to be totally there for everyone, even if you’re hurting inside. Helping others is how you heal. Eye 2, Deep down you are Conscientious. You’re the type of person who’s always looking to make a good impression and do the right thing. You believe your actions make a difference in other people’s lives, no matter how large or small they are. You don’t show the world how worried and upset you are. You see a lot of misery and injustice that you keep to yourself. You are devoted to being the best person possible. It’s the least you can do with your time on this planet. Eye 3, Deep Down you are tortured. You’re the type of person who has a very tumultuous past that still affects you today. You can’t help but think that life is some sort of sick cosmic joke. You try to find your peace wherever you can. You don’t show the world your darkest thoughts. You have a lot to endure, and your keeping it to yourself. Your outlook can be surprisingly sunny at times. You’re an expert at picking yourself up when you fall. Eye 4, Deep Down you are philosophical. You’re the type of person who’s likely to over think everything and anything. You like to get to the deeper meaning of things. You get

Lammas 2014

Open Ways so lost in your thoughts that it’s sometimes hard to tell up from down. You don’t show the world how unsure you are about everything. You may be figuring things out, but you’re still confident. You see life as a puzzle, and you like playing with the pieces until they fit together. You may not ever figure out the meaning of it all, and you’re okay with that. Eye 5, Deep down you are mysterious. You’re the type of person who hasn’t figured yourself out, so good luck to anyone else who plans to try! You are a mash up of many contradictions, and your mood changes daily. Once find yourself, you’ve changed into someone else. You don’t show the world much about yourself. You are a person of few words and confusing actions. You prefer to observe and learn about people before you chime in. You only say things that you are sure of. Eye 6, Deep down you are sensitive. You’re the type of person who notices everything and forgets nothing. You are very in tune with the world. You feel deeply, and sometimes the silliest things can affect you. You are easily brought to laughter or tears. You don’t show the world how fragile you are. You instead show people how insightful you can be. You are good at anticipating what’s going to happen in your life. You are often the first one to see what’s coming. Eye 7, Deep down you are fiery. You’re the type of person who’s always energetic or passionate. There’s nothing subtle about you… ever. You tend to love or hate everything. You have a ton of opinions, and you make up your mind quickly. You don’t show the world how anxious you are. You have a lot of energy, and too much of it means you can be quite nervous. Everything is very high stakes for you. You can’t help but build up the drama in your head. Eye 8, Deep down you are eccentric. You’re the type of person who has unusual interests, beliefs, and practices. You’ve always been a bit of a weirdo. You don’t care much for rules or tradition. You do things your way and let the chips fall where they may. You show the world everything about you. You have nothing to hide, and you just laugh off those who judge you. You wish everyone was more like you. There’s a lot of joy in being a non-conformist. Eye 9, Deep Down you are Intuitive. You’re the type of person who understands other people and the world very well. You don’t let on to how much you know. You can tell so much from someone’s facial expressions or tone of voice. And you always know when you’re being lied to. You show the world exactly what you want to show. Besides being good at reading people, you also know how you’re being read. You know when you’re being manipulated, and you know how to manipulate someone if you have to. You usually don’t resort to it though!

Open Ways Make Your Own Smudge Sticks By Patti Wigington

http://paganwiccan.about.com/od/lammascrafts/ss/SmudgeSticks.htm

Smudging is a great way to cleanse a sacred space, and most people use smudge sticks made of sweetgrass or sage for this purpose. Although they are available commercially -- and are fairly inexpensive -- it's easy to make your own if you've got herbs growing in your garden, or if there's a place nearby where you can go wildcrafting. You'll need:

• • • •

Scissors or garden clippers Cotton string Plants such as sage, mugwort, rosemary, lavender, or juniper

Cut off pieces of the plants in lengths about 6 - 10 inches long. For more leafy plants, you can make the pieces shorter, but you may want to use a longer piece for a plant that has fewer leaves.

Bundle your herbs. Cut a length of string about five feet long. Put several branches together so that the cut ends are all together, and the leafy ends are all together. Wind the string tightly around the stems of the bundle, leaving two inches of loose string where you began. The smudge stick in the photos contains sage, rosemary and pennyroyal. Wrap the remaining length of string around the base of the branches several times to secure it. Then, gradually, work your way along the length of branches until you reach the leafy end. Return the string back up to the stems, creating a bit of a criss-cross pattern. You'll want to wind the string tightly enough that nothing gets loose, but not so tight that it cuts off pieces of the plants. When you get back to the stems, tie the remainder of the string to the 2" loose piece you left at the beginning. Trim off any excess pieces so that the ends of your smudge stick are even. Place the bundle outside or hang it up for drying. Depending on what type of herb you used, and how humid your weather is, it may take a couple of days or as much as a week to dry out. When your sticks are dry, you can burn them in ritual for smudging by lighting one end.

Safety tip: Some plants may have toxic fumes. Do not burn a plant unless you know it is safe to do so.

Community Recipes Preparing a Hindu Sweet: Recipe for Pyasam Ingredients: · 1/2 a measuring cup rice · 1/4 teaspoon ghee (or butter) · 2 to 3 cups of milk · 1 cup of water · 5 to 6 threads of saffron · 1/2 a cup shredded almonds · 1 nicely grounded cardamom · one cup condensed sweet milk Preparation: 1. Fry the rice in ghee (or butter) in a pan on low heat until it gains a white colour. (this may take one or two minutes) 2. Reduce heat, add milk and water to the mixture and cook until done. (this may take about 15 minutes. The best way to check is to see if the rice grains are fully cooked and have turned soft). 3. Pour the condensed milk slowly while stirring the mixture on low heat until it blends with the cooked rice. (this may take five minutes) 4. Add shredded almonds and cardamom and stir. Turn off the heating and dissolve the saffron in the mixture. Stir it once again and leave it aside for a while before eating. 5. Serve warm. A quicker way of producing pyasam: Open a tin of rice-pudding. While heating the ingredients, add some shredded almonds, ground cardamom and a few strands of saffron. This will turn the ordinary rice-pudding into an exotic tasting Indian sweet.
