Open Ways Letter from the Editor Ah Midsummer! The Summer Solstice is here again. Camping, cook outs and friends adventuring together! The Open Ways Newsletter was recently gifted with 100 back issues. This bounty of past art and articles was provided by Bruce. Thank you Bruce for giving such a large piece of the Open Ways Newsletters history back to our community. (For those who do not know, when I took over as editor of the newsletter there were only the last few issues created by the previous editors. The long history of this publication had been lost). Blessed Be, Angel

It Takes a Village to Raise... a Village Do you have knowledge and spiritual gifts to share with your community? Volunteer to present a workshop at the Northwest Fall Equinox Festival 2014! Please email a description of the workshop you wish to present to nwfef@ninehouses.org. Be sure to include the length of the workshop and any preferred accommodations it might entail.

Do you have BIG MAGICK to share with your community? We are accepting proposals for NWFEF 2015 main ritual! The purpose of NWFEF is to celebrate the harvest. The main theme, ritual, and workshops differ from year to year depending on selection from proposals submitted by community members (you!). Your ritual proposal must have a complete outline; please contact nwfef@ninehouses.org to request "Tips and Tricks", a "rubric" to assist you in composing your proposal. Ritual proposal submission may be emailed to nwfef@ninehouses.org or mailed to PO Box 33182, Portland, OR 97292.

Open Ways Submissions for Open Ways ! Open Ways Gateway to the Pagan Communities is a newsletter for the community by the community. We /EED your contributions! Guidelines for All Contributors We welcome articles up to 3,000 words of a scholarly, historical, news/event, or how-to–nature; letters; music; poetry; rituals for group or solo-practitioners; personal experience; interviews; artwork; etc. Please honor plurality and diversity. Address issues of interest to pagans, Wiccan’s, polytheists, Buddhists, or nature spiritualists. Where appropriate, include bibliographic references, sidebars, and graphics. Manuscripts will be accepted in any readable form; however we prefer articles via email if possible. Manuscripts and letters selected for publication may be edited for clarity, brevity, accuracy, or editorial consistency. Always include a self-addressed, stamped envelope if you wish your work returned. Never send your only copy! The editorial staff reserves the right to accept or reject any manuscript or work of art submitted for publication. Contributing Columnists (reoccurring) Column writing offers a lot of flexibility as well as a wide-ranging variety of topics on which to expound. Submit a proposal stating the intention of the column and frequency. Contributors that commit to being a reoccurring contributor to 4 or more issues will be given a complementary business card size advertisement. Contributions may be: • Regular features with the same by-line, title, and/or premise. • Of a subject matter that is by nature practical (how-to), historical, literary, ethical, philosophical, educational, social, moral, political, inspirational, magical, or whatever happens to stoke your bellows. • In a style appropriate for the subject matter, the author’s personal taste, and the editors guidelines of this publication. Book reviews We welcome and encourage your written book reviews. These do not need to be scholarly critiques of the material by someone with a lifetime of experience with the subject matter; often the best, most useful reviews are written by those with whom the readership can identify. The book you are reviewing does not need to be a new release. Readers are interested in your reaction to the book: did you enjoy it? Did it provoke any new ideas or change for you? Was it useful? Artwork Open Ways encourages submissions of all kinds of artwork: Larger pieces for the cover, smaller works for illustration, and even smaller ones to accent and fill in. Please be sure your images are high quality jpeg or tif files with 300dpi. Need help, just ask! Poetry We regularly run poetry in each issue, and plan to continue this as long as we have the poems to do so. Poems should be of reasonable length and on Pagan/Wiccan topics. Ones that reflect your personal thoughts and experiences are preferred. Reporting Open Ways needs your stories of events, speakers, and public festivals in your area to share with our readers. Or maybe you went for a walk in the woods and had an interesting experience. These are stories you would share around the circle.

Send submissions to: editor@ninehouses.org openwayseditor@gmail.com World Wide Web: http://ninehouses.org Please DO NOT send the only copy of your work! All submissions will be accepted and/or edited for content at the discretion of the editorial staff.

The Hero’s Journey: The Heirophant By Chrissy Lavielle Originally published on Mrs. Lavielle’s Blog NOVEMBER23,2010 · 8:35 PM

The Major Arcana and The Hero’s Journey: The Hierophant

This is the key that pushes all my buttons. It’s the “I’m right because God told me so” card.

Pope Pius XII (1939-1958) wearing the three tiered papal crown and giving the sign of benediction It’s definitely a picture of a pope. There’s the three tiered papal crown and the triple cross, which symbolizes his influence in all three worlds— formative, creative, and material. He sits between the pillars of duality and gives God’s blessing or benediction to the two priests kneeling before him. But the history of key five, The Hierophant or The Pope, goes way back, centuries before Jesus was even a gleam in Jehovah’s eye. Way back in the day, Zeus/Jupiter, the great father god of the Mediterranean world, was the only god who could release someone who had committed a great sacrilege from the torment of Furies that pursued him. But that person couldn’t just do the rites and ask Zeus for mercy himself, he had to find someone to do the rites for him, hopefully someone knowledgeable. Because the Furies were old gods, and the

Fall Equinox 2014

9

Open Ways new Hellenistic gods like Zeus didn’t mess with the old gods without a very good reason. (Paul Huson, in The Devil’s Picture Book) Is this beginning to look familiar? Centuries later, the pagan High Priest of Rome was called the pontifex maximus, from the Latin pons, or bridge, and facere, to make. In other words, he was the top guy, the bridge-maker between the gods and men. Today, the Roman Catholic pope is also called the Pontif. Wikipedia defines hierophant as “a person who brings religious congregants into the presence of that which is deemed holy. The word comes from Ancient Greece, where it was constructed from the combination of ta hiera, “the holy,” and phainein, “to show.” In Attica it was the title of the chief priest at the Eleusinian Mysteries. A hierophant is an interpreter of sacred mysteries and arcane principles.” I can’t think of any god or goddess to associate with The Hierophant because he is a human being whose purpose is to present the messages of the gods to his people. He’s very different from the High Priestess, who is the archetypal keeper of the mysteries, the inner or hidden realms of religion.

Vav is the Hebrew letter attributed to this card. It means hook or connection. Every column of the Torah begins with the letter Vav, which “hooks” the word of God to the parchment, or material world. The sign of Taurus, the bull, is associated with The Hierophant and lends its practical, earthy nature to the mean-

ing of the card, whose number is

5, the number of man.

And so what we have here is someone who delivers the messages of the gods to people who, for a multitude of reasons, can’t hear them for themselves. This is very convenient when you are setting up a religion (from the Latin religare, to reconnect), because in most organized religions, the priests reconnect to the divine and interpret what they hear for their flocks. It keeps things neater that way. Everyone is on the same page and arguments are minimized. And besides, priests are specialists in the field of religion and have spent years reconnecting with God. They’ve developed short cuts to the divine and are experts on the problems that beset humanity. Organized religion’s take on the matter is that it’s best to leave these things to the experts. Even the Protestant sects, who broke away from the Catholic Church because they believed that anyone could talk to God and interpret his words in The Holy Bible. still go to church and sit and listen to a minister (or Hierophant) tell them about Gods word and what it means.

10

Fall Equinox 2014

Open Ways But this is also the card of personal revelation. We are all capable of connecting with the gods and hearing the small, clear voice of the divine. The first trick is to have the faith to believe in what we hear and not relegate it to the dust heap of delusion and wishful thinking. The second trick is to find the courage to act on what we hear. The ancient Greeks believed that the gods often spoke to them through the mouths of ordinary people. The crazy guy who sat on the corner might have a message for you from Hermes. I am fond of this idea and believe it holds true even today. I know that I’ve often felt moved to say something to a complete stranger for no apparent reason, and the message seemed to be helpful to them. At least they said it was, but maybe they were just humoring me so I’d go away.

Michelangelo's Moses from "Under the Influence", Lowrider Tattoo This is also the card for someone who is on a mission from God. The religious fanatic who believes they, and they alone, have a direct connection with the true diety. Moses spoke with God frequently. He communed with him up on Mt Sinai and returned to his people with the Ten Commandments. A candidate for fanaticism if ever there was one, and Michelangelo must have agreed. He gave his statue of Moses a marvelously fanatical expression. When The Hierophant appears in a reading, it could mean that the querent has a message to give to the world in general or to someone in particular, or that an authority figure has a message for her. It could suggest conformity and a need to fit in, or a preference for the outer forms of organized religion. It might even signal the querent’s need to think about his own religion and whether or not it is feeding his soul. If it is reversed, it could mean problems with authority, fanaticism, or nonconformity.

Open Ways

In fiction, The Hierophant should never be confused with the wide-eyed mystic with a vision unless that mystic begins to preach about his vision or takes steps to make it a reality. Ray Kinsella, the farmer in Field of Dreams, sees a vision of a baseball diamond in his cornfield and a voice informs him that “If you build it, he will come.” But he only becomes The Hierophant when he plows under his corn, builds the diamond, and has the courage to not replant it when his mortgage comes due. The Wizard, in The Wizard of Oz, was a crooked Hierophant. When his balloon landed in Oz, he set himself up as the servant of a powerful, godlike, wizard and took over control of the Emerald City.

Oz, The Great and Terrible Can you think of other Hierophant characters? They can be a main character like Ray Kinsella, a mentor/trickster figure like the Wizard, or any of the other archetypes. FEBRUARY 7,2011 · 6:11 PM

I came upon this picture and an article streamed by National Geographic and couldn’t resist.

The men in the top hats are Punxsutawney Phil’s Inner Circle. Every February 2nd, as soon as the sun is up far enough to cast a shadow, they proceed to Gobblers Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and yank Phil out of his hollow stump. If he sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. I knew all this, but I didn’t know that, according to this article, these men speak with Phil and get his official prognostication, which they then deliver to the waiting multitude. In case you missed it, this year they said that he said there would be an early spring.

Thorn’s Lessons By Thorn Walking the inner path This summary explains the steps one can take to improve one's connection to the world around them, by teaching them to use their body, their senses, and their energy to interact with the world in a different way, using their full capabilities and awareness to become a greater part of a greater community around them. That Community includes Fey, Elementals, People, Sprits, and others in the world. 1. Breathing, Heartbeat, and Blood flow These exercises work two ways; they teach basic breath control (aka proper breathing), and helps achieve the start of the first perception shift, which is inward, through paying attention to the breath and the beating of your heart. Breath is the beginning of individual life. Until you are born, your mother breathes for you, until you are born, and take that first breath on your own, as your own individual being. Breathing properly is a calming, meditative activity within itself. Proper breaths of air are inhaled through the nose, from the diaphragm, not just the belly. They should be relaxed in their pace, and full. They should occur without tension on the chest at full breath, and not be an attempt to burst one's own chest. Exhaling can be through the nose, but is usually done through the mouth. You should also not attempt to squeeze every last bit of air out of your lungs when exhaling. Paying attention to the air entering your body is a simple but important first step. A heartbeat is also one of the primary signifiers of life. A person can only survive a few minutes without their heart beating. Surviving such a state almost always requires either unusual circumstances (like drowning in freezing water) or timely and knowledgeable aid, such as CPR. It is believed by most people that the heart cannot be manipulated without drugs or external forces, but they have in fact been proven wrong. Activities such as deep meditation, altered states, and specialized training such as biofeedback can allow a diligent practitioner to control their heart's rate and pattern of beating. Teaching such techniques is not the aim of this lesson. The aim of this lesson is to create an awareness of the heart's beating in the chest, and the awareness of the blood being pumped by it, through the entire body. The body actually pulsates and throbs as the blood is forced through it. To relax and pay attention to what one's own body is doing, to go from being unconscious of the body's housekeeping, to becoming aware of it's constant cyclical activity is the aim of this lesson.

Open Ways A Letter To The Gods By Ravyn Crescent Fontanalis I gazed upon your faces in the darkness and the light. I sought your wisdom in the stars in the fabric of the night. I looked in books both new and old, and heard my own heart beating. I finally found your story… And still I keep on reading. To think things and make it happen was your gift to all. So simple, yet so difficult, you’re there at beck and call. In every flower, leaf, and bud. In every cat, and snake, and bee… But what is most amazing is that you are found in me. Perfect love and perfect peace will make conditions right. From that place that’s not a place, the form will come to light. I lift my heart to touch you. There is magic to be done! And all I need is knowing that you and I are one.
