Tips for Making Scientist Circles Work
Use these tips to help you use scientist circles strategically to create a routine that keeps the focus on students talking and learning from each other.
1.Use them strategically – we are not getting in a circle every time we discuss something – scientist circles should be used strategically when there is some important sensemaking needed.
2. Set it up – Take the time to explicitly teach and practice with students how to get into and out of the circle efficiently.
3.Share the why– Be explicit with students about why we are in a circle-let them know that THEIR ideas are important and you want them talking to each other and not just you.
4.Be creative – if your room is not set up with an easy space for a circle, try standing circles or have students sit on their desks. It doesn’t have to be a “circle”, but students should be all facing each other and at a similar level.
