NATIONAL CERTIFICATE IN MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION SUPPORT Qualification Code: NC1678 Level: 4 Credits: 110 The National Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Support is a qualification for people working in mental health and addiction services as support workers. This part-time certificate is designed to be completed over a period of 18 months. Mental health and addiction support workers help people with mental health and/or addiction issues and are employed by district health boards or within the community.

GRADUATE PROFILE Once you have successfully completed this qualification, you will know about: · factors that contribute to mental health wellbeing and mental health and addiction problems · mental health disorders and addiction · the impact of mental illness and addiction on people and their families/whänau · the type and purpose of mental health and addiction services in New Zealand · the role, interventions and models used by mental health and addiction support workers · the law related to mental health and addiction services · engaging with people who use mental health and addiction services · involving families/whänau and other support people · developing wellness support plans · working safely and ethically.

QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE The National Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Support is made up of five compulsory courses which are based on New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) unit standards. You can only enrol in one course at a time and you need to complete each course in the order shown below. COURSE ONE (MH001): Knowledge of mental health and addiction UNIT STANDARD

General information ASSESSMENT You will need to complete workplace-based tasks verified by your supervisor including workbook assessments that are assessed by Open Polytechnic tutors. The first three modules have two assessments each and the last two modules have three assessments each. There are no exams. Some assessments may need to be submitted online. When your enrolment is confirmed we will send you an email with your assessment due dates. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS You need to be working as a mental health and addiction support worker and have a suitably qualified supervisor who has agreed to oversee your work for the certificate. Your workplace supervisor should be someone you report to, who can verify that your written work is an accurate account of what you did in the workplace and who can say that your practical work meets the requirements of your workplace. As part of your online application for enrolment, you are required to download and complete a Memorandum of Understanding. This outlines the relationship between Open Polytechnic, your employer, supervisor and yourself. Your supervisor will need to fill in the supervisor information form on the back of the Memorandum of Understanding. This will show us their experience in mental health, addiction and supervision. You will both need to sign the Memorandum of Understanding. More information will be provided when you apply to enrol online. Note: If you are working as a volunteer support worker please contact us to ensure you are able to meet the requirements. The programme leader will need to approve your enrolment application before your enrolment can be processed. You must live and work in New Zealand to enrol in this qualification.

English language English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language. Visit openpolytechnic.ac.nz and browse our subjects and courses to find the fee information you need. Annual administration fee You will need to pay a non-refundable annual administration fee with your first enrolment in each academic year. Loans, allowances and other funding Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We recommend that you apply for a student loan at least 4 weeks before the commencement of your study. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid. ENROLMENT This qualification is open for admission throughout the year and each course officially starts on the first Monday of the month you choose for enrolment. You will be advised if additional information is needed to progress your application, and you can usually complete this online during the application process. When your enrolment is confirmed, we will send you a letter with your course start and end dates.

STUDY TIME You will be expected to complete the qualification in 18 months of part-time study. Each course will take between 200 and 250 hours to complete. Financial assistance We have a fund to help students who are in financial need and have no other option for financial support. This fund is available for course fees and/or set textbooks. Study grant You may be eligible for a Mental Health Support Worker Training Grant, funded by the Ministry of Health and administered by Careerforce (Community Support Services Industry Training Organisation Ltd). To qualify for the grant you must: · be enrolled by a NZQA approved Tertiary Education Organisation in the National Certificate in Mental Health and Addiction Support (Level 4) · be employed (paid or volunteer) in a mental health service funded by the District Health Board (DHB)/Ministry of Health (MOH) for a minimum of 16 hours per week · be in a role that is relevant to mental health support work · have an employer who is supportive of your application for a training grant · not have your tuition fees paid by other benefits or other scholarships (excluding student loans). Note: Where employers have funded the training, employees are able to apply for the grant (if other criteria are met) and nominate that their employer receives the grant in reimbursement · attach proof of payment of fees from Open Polytechnic to your training grant application form · be a New Zealand citizen or New Zealand permanent resident and provide photocopied evidence. 7

Your tutor is there to help you through the course work, make sure you have understood the study material, and check your progress. Once you’re enrolled, you can also keep track of your study information on the go with the My Open Polytechnic smartphone app called My OP. To download the app, search for ‘My OP’ on the App Store (Apple iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android smartphone). These come pre-installed on your smartphone. Online Campus Online Campus is the area of our website where you can: · access and submit assessments · link to web pages specific to your course, including frequently asked questions (FAQ), assessment hints, web resources, staff information and sometimes online quizzes and tutorials · communicate with other students in your course, and with your lecturer or tutor · access the library. Library We provide a library service for students. There is no additional fee for using it. The library service provides: · online resources · guides on how to search for information · a distance lending service with free and fast delivery · information about study techniques. New Zealand Qualifications Authority – Record of Achievement If you are registered on the NZQA database, please provide your Record of Achievement number or your National Student Number when you apply to enrol online. If you are not registered, we will arrange this when you have finished your first unit standard. You can access your Record of Achievement online or you can phone the NZQA and ask for a copy of it.
